I love Emppu so much. He's always making jokes on stage, takes care of others, is a very humble guitar player but can play the hell out of his EV1. So underrated but one of the world top guitarists. The drummer, Yuka, had a huge migraine attack during this concert (that's why he leans at hs drumkit when he does not play) Probably caused by his insominia combined with the stress of firiing Tarja later that night. Happy he is still active for Nightwish and hope he does better now They are such phenomenal musicians, I always need my daily NightWish vitamins. I love the original from Floyd, but this version is just WOW.
All of my life (68 y old Dutch man) I am a fan of Pink Floyd and have seen them several times. After seeing Floor Jansen in Beste Zangers in 2019 I became a huge Nightwish fan. Seen Floor during one of her first solo shows just before Covid kicked in and seen Nichtwish in Amsterdam. This is not just a cover, this is the ultimate tribute from an exceptional band to an exceptional band.
During this concert, the guys all knew that Tarja would be fired after the show was over, but she did not know. I often feel that the extreme emotion that they are are showing is made greater by the anguish, anger, uncertainty, regret that they all were feeling. What, of course, it also shows is that every single member of this extraordinary band is a consumate artist in their own right. Marko, in particular, lives the songs he is singing. I often feel that he actually becomes the song, becomes the emotion, and is able is such a unique way to transmit that to his audience. There is one shot in particular that always grabs me. It shows Marko in profile, and behind him, full face, is Tuomas. The intensity in both of their faces speaks volumes.
There is so much foreshadowing in the version of ever dream from this concert end of an era from the emotion you see from Tuomas at the beginning of the song
No fun, no excitement on stage. But perfect delivery in the actual situation about Tarjas firing. Professionality at its best. David Gilmour is on stage.
I’ve always thought that there was something significant about just the guys performing “High Hopes” on the night they planned to drop their female lead. Coincidence probably, but the guys were on fire. Were they contemplating moving forward as just a 4-man band for a bit? I’m sure someone knows if it crossed their minds.
Tuomas changed the key of the song from C minor to D minor. This shift in emotions is very real. Pure genius. According to my musical key charts, Cm is a variable key often used to convey hopefulness, Dm is sadness and uncertainty.
Imo, Marko's best concert ever. He was on fire on that night. Everything he did there was just perfect. Phantom of the opera, this, Slaying the dreamer, The Siren, Planet hell...just amazing. But on the other hand, they all were at their best, which is actually pretty incredible considering, that they all knew what will happen after the concert...all except poor Tarja.
Remember this intensity when you listen to Poet and the Pendulum, Bye Bye Beautiful and Master, Passion ,Greed. There is a LOT of subtext in this performance that the three songs I just mentioned, address later. You got to see a glimpse of intense concentration EMMPU, even David Gilmore liked this performance.
The look on your face says it all.🤘🤘. End of an Era is the 2005 concert in Helsinki. This was song #8 in an 18 song set. Last show on the Once album tour, and last Nightwish show for original lead singer Tarja Turunen. She was offstage for a wardrobe change during this song. Fired after the concert, after 9 years and 5 albums, she has gone on to successful solo career. More of a tribute than a cover, rumor has it that David Gilmour has seen it and loved it. Between 2001, when Marko joined, and this concert, he would often sing a cover while Tarja changed, including Crazy Train, and Megadeth's Symphony of Destruction. Marko kills it , and Emppu with a great tribute to Gilmour's original guitar work. Marko sang backing and co-lead on a lot of songs with Nightwish, and lead on a few. He was lead singer in his first band Tarot, formed when he was 16. He has the ability to sound great singing with just about anyone too, Floor , Tarja, Anette, and the various collabs he has done over the years. Check him out singing with Floor on "Romanticide" from Wacken, or "7 Days to the Wolves" at Wembley 2015. And with Tarja , from this same 2005 show, on "The Siren" or their cover of "Phantom of the Opera" And Happy Birthday to Gaye. 🎂
Extra special emotionally, as Tarja was backstage, not knowing what was to come, 2:49 that look from Tuomas to Marco. 3:08 Jukka yelling to himself, trying to stay focussed. Tuomas signalling to Emppu, check on Jukka, then Emppu jumping down from the drum kit. These guys are absolutely amazing, you were ready to wipe away a tear... Marko becomes the song. "The grass was greener The light was brighter With friends surrounded The nights of wonder" How appropriate for the situation that they were in!
What a band. Marco's vocals are brilliant, Jukka's drumming is kick-ass, Tuomas is a genius as usual, and Emppu......Emppu's the man, what an incredible guitarist - he did David Gilmour proud
It only took four guy's to do that....Four of the most talented musicians of our time, how lucky are we....80 years old and loving every minute from Nighwish, and that beautiful lady that sings with them, I think her name is Floor....
It is one of the finest performances of one of the best covers ever. It completely honors the song by not copying it, but by creating an alternate arrangement that channels the empathy of the original in the realm of Nightwish's genre. It is a hallmark of Nightwish's history. Thank you very much!
Just an incredible tribute to the Pink Floyd original, it even has the approval of Dave Gilmore. You're face said everything that needed to be said - great reaction 🤘
It's truly a tribute, not just a cover. Marko is phenomenal, of course, but so are many others. How Emppu manages to do *two* solos that fit perfectly to the performance, pay homage and respects to the original and still sound his own is beyond me.
@@davidellinsworth3299 Absolutely loved it. Was shocked how great Marco was, thought the vocals were an improvement on the original, couldn't put Emppu's interpretations of Gilmore ahead of Gilmore, but was extremely impressed
No one doubts for a second the greatness and legendary status of Pink Floyd. But this is a performance that was second to none, in my opinion. Drop jaw phenomenal and your reaction showed it.
My goosebumps get goosebumps evertyme I hear this song....he's a fantastic singer....and often when he harmonises with Floor...

If I close my eyes, Emppu has the guitar tone just like David Gilmore - and Marko - No comments needed. Love it! That is nothing less than one of the greatest TRIBUTES there is.
Even the circle light behind them is a nod to Pulse, 1994. A life-long Pink Floyd fan, from Syd Barrett daze, became a Nightwish fan when he heard this. He made me play the CD and DVD many times! The guys all showed here that they did not have to have a female singer to be a great band..... as events turned out...... It was an option Tuomas did not want to consider. It hit you like it hit me. Glorious revelation!
I discovered Nightwish in the late 90's just right after they started out. It helps to have friends who are musicians because they always know the best underrated music.
Fun fact: Marco flubs two lines, apparently forgetting the lyrics, but you don't notice because he just powers through and catches the thread of the lyrics again. :)
I get more stunned each time I listen to this. The voice and emotions are so raw and exposed. The instrumentation is stripped back and powerful at the same time. Perfect for remembering friends, times, and braincells gone by. So, yeah, just one more unforgettable moment. There's more to say, but no more energy. This song saps me.
This is an excellent example of the talent that Nightwish have. It's not just Floor (and Tarja before), Marco is a fantastic singer and bass player, Empuu gets tones out of his guitar that really dig into the song, Toumas is the genius behind the whole thing (apart from that he's great on keyboards), Troy (not here - but a huge multi-talent, have you even heard of him?). It all adds up to Nightwish and by now over a quarter of a century... You still have sooooo many great songs ahead of you. That's why you can make a Nightwish video more often, otherwise we'll wait another quarter of a century... 🤣
What a great reaction. I don't react all the time, because mostly what I want to say is already told by others. You have to be exeptional, when you even consider to play a Pink Floyd song. Nightwish did the song justice and made not a cover, but a tribute to the song and to Pink Floyd. They made it their own, but kept the message and the feeling of the song where it has to be. To play a song like this, every band member has to be exeptional. Nightwish is and all of their bandmembers are, in Nightwish and in their solostuff/sideprojects.
Marco is amazing is a legend in Europa...powerful voice...Jukka is amazing drummer and Emppu magistral.guitarrist...NightwishHigher level.music ❤ is the best.Symphonica.metal on the planet ❤
You totally get it! So happy you reacted to this. It always seems to me that they somehow become overtaken and play as one like never before! The last 2 minutes were sublime and I never get tired of watching this! I think I'm right in saying that David Gilmour gave his seal of approval😊 Take care
Loved your reaction, this was great! Marko is truly my favorite person of all times! ❤ And of course, all of the band members were just pure magic in this one! 🔥 Extremely talented band!
GINX - and this is what music can do to you. Your brain disassociates itself from reality and you can't string a coherent sentence together. All you can do is marvel and wonder at what you have just heard. There are no words to describe some music, nor do you need those words as the music takes care of that itself. Just listen, enjoy, and listen again.....
Thank you for a great reaction. As you are a keen observer of band performances as well as music you might appreciate an amazing display of band member care going on. Watch your video between 7:20 and 7:30. Jukka, the drummer, is in physical pain during this performance (he suffered from migraines) and you can see it in his face and actions. Tuomas signals with a quick glance to Emppu and you will later see Emppu head up to the drum stage and give some support to his bandmate. All of this happening during an amazing musical performance. Even more chills every time I see this.
You did it again! I still love this. Never a Tarja fan in the later years, but it was an inevitability, given she'd already said she was leaving. I think the guys poured all that emotion into this.
Surprised and smiley face of the lovely lady says it all. This was and is so good! And Emppu-guitarist is going strong here. He is usually more in the background delivering the needed riffs and the other guitar sounds. But here he is shining like the crazy diamond!
Whaw, great reaction!! This should not be called a " Cover", but a "Tribute." I like both groups performances, but Nightwich give me more shivers than Pink Floyd.
this was not a cover it was a tribute to one of the best bands ever...Marko nailed it every note. thanks for sharing this moment.greets from the NW Army in the Netherlands.
i find that Marko is underappreciated. he's always put beside floor as backing when singing songs, but hes a singer in his own right. he has his own bands including Tarot and Northern Kings. his solo album is just brilliant. i will miss him in Nightwish.
;) this was such an enjoyable reaction, thank you your shocked reaction gave me goosebumps all over, and i hoped for it when suggesting this. Thank you for completely exceeding my expectations :) and on the Nightwish side of this, look that´s what they do, when the main vocalist has it changing pause in 2005 ... can´t wait until you find "7 days to the wolves", "The poet and the pendulum", and "The greatest show on earth"
..another amazing Marko can be found in "Beauty *OF* the beast", 2001 with Tarja normally i suggest live performances, but for this just take the lyric´s video
This is the ultimate Nightwish tribute to the legends and the shared journey both have experienced in the history of both bands. Especially poignant given the fact that following this show the boys presented Tarja with the open letter which would change all of their lives and careers going forward. I would love to know if this was presented to the boys to perform at this show by Tuomas. He is so into poetic lyrics it would not surprise me.
It was part of their Once world tour setlist. I think it was maybe two or three months earlier when Emppu completely messed up his solo. Was clearly really angry with himself and was shaking his head.
@@ValtteL Thanks for the info. I still wonder if when planning the set list for the tour Tuomas suggested this song. They all probably knew about the final outcome at tour's end.
Hi Ginx, greetings from UK That was a great reactiuon, thank you 🥰 A Marko-gaasm is a thing! 😁 Mind you, every single one of the guys stood out in this performance
I'll say this, Gina - listening to Nightwish, any Nightwish composition, elevates your sensibilities. Tuomas' work soars over the wasteland of autotune and mediocrity that comprises so much of modern music. You get it, Gina and this is what I look for in Nightwish reactors. Why? I suppose that those of us who respond to Nightwish and Epica are kindred souls. And that's a good thing to find in today's world.
If you listen to Nightwish, "The Islander", live from Tampere you will get a great experience of Marco's vocals. Be sure to get the whole clip where he is talking to the audience before the song begins.
I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan since I was a little kid. Then I found Nightwish many years ago, and hearing them do a Floyd song better than Floyd was just amazing.
My favourite song on "The Division Bell", but Nightwish's version hits me harder. Just glorious. Most bands are lucky to have one great lead singer, for many years Nightwish had two! Perhaps a little greedy... (kidding)
This is my go-to song if I can't come up with s Nightwish song, its an incredible version. Add to that that this is the last concert they did together with Tarja.
What a tribute from Nightwish to this legendary song 🤩. Marko is a living legend !!!!! And Yes, Nightwish makes you Feel it .... Songs covered by Nightwish:
Over the Hills and Far Away (Gary Moore cover) Walking in the Air (Howard Blake cover) The Phantom of the Opera (Andrew Lloyd Webber cover) Symphony of Destruction (Megadeth cover) Elvenjig ([traditional] cover) Finlandia (Jean Sibelius cover) High Hopes (Pink Floyd cover) Crazy Train (Ozzy Osbourne cover) The Mug of Brown Ale ([traditional] cover) We're Not Gonna Take It (Twisted Sister cover) Wild Child (W.A.S.P. cover) Stone People (John Two‐Hawks cover) Alone (i‐Ten cover) Ace of Spades (Motörhead cover) Don't Talk to Strangers (Dio cover) Locomotive Breath (Jethro Tull cover) Money (Pink Floyd cover) Rock Around the Clock (Sonny Dae and His Knights cover) Show Me How to Die (Battle Beast cover) Wonderful Life (Black cover) NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘
An interesting point about the videography! The beginning contains just two performers and is very minimalistic, so it's not trivial to shoot and cut it in a way that makes it interesting. But Nightwish production crew is top notch, and this applies also to the lights/graphics designers (tho no screens yet in shows this old) and video producer and camera operators.
I hadn't realised this was a Floyd cover - just thought it was more Nightwish. But now I notice it mentions the division bell, which is of a course a clue.
Love this and have watched many other reactions. For me PF - Memories and somewhat regret ; NW - Anger and disappointment what could have been. Both powerful and dramatic in their way. BRLLIANT
I love that as stunned as you were you still articulated your thoughts with musical words. I am a bit over the words "fire, kilt it, murdered it etc". Nightwish have changed how I play, write and record. How tasty was the guitar on this?! cheers
The female lead vocalists have always been the focus of most reactors, and aside from Tuomas' writing genius, maybe... rightfully so. That would make you think if you took that vocalist away, the band would only be a shadow of its former self. I mean, how many times have you seen a singer leave a band for solo work... and that band was never the same. Here, the singer is off stage doing a wardrobe change... and this is what the band gives you! lol. Further evidence of just how good this band is, how good the writing is, how good the performances are... Tarja left, and that could have been the end, but they bring in another singer (Annette) and have some of their greatest commercial successes ever. Annette leaves, and they bring in Floor... and became what many consider to be the best line-up of the band- ever. Marco, somewhat recently, quit, but the band is still going strong. Keep going down the NW rabbit hole... lots to uncover still... :)
As an audio engineer You must know Genelec from Finland. Nightwish use Genelec speakers in all stages of record making. Just another audio nerd speaking 😀
After I discovered this song with Nightwish, I took a taste test and checked out a few different Pink Floyd versions of High Hopes, after reading comments how supposedly great they were. Verdict, throw away your Pink Floyd versions, you only need the Nightwish one.
I've never been a Pink Floyd fan, although I do admit they have amazing compositions, but this tribute version made me give them another listen. I'm sorry to those this offends, but I think Emppu outplayed Gilmour on the solos, and I recognize it's just a matter of taste, but it's my taste. It's so difficult to touch Marco's passion combined with his amazing voice, and to match Tuomas' arranging genius, let alone his compositions. This is evidence of that. It didn't turn me into a Floyd fan, but it allowed me to give them a small degree of respect that I didn't have before, and isn't that what a tribute is supposed to do? Excellent reaction!
Man, I HATED this cover when I first heard it. I tried not to judge it against the original, which I love, but that's impossible. Especially the live version from Pulse, you know? How can ANYONE stand in David Gilmour's shoes? Well, it took two guys, but they did it. When I went back to give it another shot it blew me away. Marko's voice specifically brings out an entirely different dimension to the song when juxtaposed against Dave's gentle and somber voice. And Emppu not trying to copy the solos, but keeping the feeling fully intact is masterful. Brilliant cover, right up there with Tool's No Quarter.
Thank you! MIKA JAAKKOLA feat. MARKO HIETALA - SOITA (Official Music Video) / Mika Jaakkola Lap Steel ruclips.net/video/dHI64gOj6Tg/видео.html This one is in Finnish.
It's a funny thing, I'm not actually a fan of pink Floyd, they just don't do it for me, and their experimentation of many things isn't one I particularly approve of - but I could listen to this version of this song all day long. For me it's got a tonne of emotion and feeling that I just have never got from Floyd. Great reaction!
@@ginxreacts Metal Hammer magazine put this and Phantom of the Opera as 2 Nightwish' entries in top 100 best metal covers of all time. 4 guys were marvelous here.
As a OF fan of over 45 years, I think this version outdoes the iriginal by a large margin. Now you see why I believe Emppu to be an unrecognised GOAT of the guitar. I feel he outdoes Gilmour (who approved of this).
Emppu is absolutely fabulous in this cover and is generally not praised enough.
His guitar tone is perfect in this (and is in general)
I do definitely prefer guitarists who play their part rather than just playing guitar, and Emppu is a good example of playing for the greater good.
Emppugasm!

this was not a cover it was a tribute to one of the best bands ever...Marko nailed it every note. thanks for sharing this moment.greets from the NW Army in the Netherlands.
i find that Marko is underappreciated. he's always put beside floor as backing when singing songs, but hes a singer in his own right. he has his own bands including Tarot and Northern Kings. his solo album is just brilliant. i will miss him in Nightwish.
One of my favorites, always chills. Marko is epic in this one❣️
;)
this was such an enjoyable reaction, thank you
your shocked reaction gave me goosebumps all over, and i hoped for it when suggesting this. Thank you for completely exceeding my expectations :)
and on the Nightwish side of this,
look
that´s what they do, when the main vocalist has it changing pause in 2005 ...
can´t wait until you find "7 days to the wolves", "The poet and the pendulum", and "The greatest show on earth"
..another amazing Marko can be found in "Beauty *OF* the beast", 2001 with Tarja
normally i suggest live performances, but for this just take the lyric´s video
This is how you do a cover. You honour the original while making it your own. It's fine line so many fail to tread.
@@Thorgrim247 Hard to say about the motives. Later on they all chose their top5 song and albums. Tuomas had High Hopes on his top5.
@@ValtteL Where can I find that list?
@@Thorgrim247 I have seen it on their old forum and reddit, but i don't have direct links to them, sorry.
Your honest and deep felt reaction said it all 👍
Gilmour gave his stamp of approval
Hi Ginx, greetings from UK
That was a great reactiuon, thank you 🥰
A Marko-gaasm is a thing! 😁
Mind you, every single one of the guys stood out in this performance
Just such an outstanding performance. Seriously. Rock on, Ginx. 🤘😎👍
"Weasels"!
@@stpfs9281 Those weasels ducking out back and leaving poor Marko to fend for himself like that!
I love how you were wanting to stop during the final section, but couldn't 😍
If you love this then you will love while my lips are still red from 2015 Wembley concert a Marco masterpiece
Honestly, you didn't even need to verbalize your thoughts because your physical and facial reactions said it all. Great reaction!
top 3 rock bands all time. pink floyd, beatles. Nightwish. from Colorado
I've been a huge Pink Floyd fan since I was a little kid. Then I found Nightwish many years ago, and hearing them do a Floyd song better than Floyd was just amazing.
He is gorgeous ❤
My favourite song on "The Division Bell", but Nightwish's version hits me harder. Just glorious. Most bands are lucky to have one great lead singer, for many years Nightwish had two! Perhaps a little greedy... (kidding)
This is my go-to song if I can't come up with s Nightwish song, its an incredible version.
Add to that that this is the last concert they did together with Tarja.
What a tribute from Nightwish to this legendary song 🤩.
Marko is a living legend !!!!!

Such an awesome list of covers/tributes!!! Thank you for sharing
"Crewish"! The hidden members of the band.
BRLLIANT
THE BEST TRIBUTE TO THEM PINK FLOID
Emppu Vuorinen...make that guitar sing for me 🤩
I love that as stunned as you were you still articulated your thoughts with musical words. I am a bit over the words "fire, kilt it, murdered it etc". Nightwish have changed how I play, write and record. How tasty was the guitar on this?! cheers
Yeah, they totally "Disturbed" the hell out of High Hopes. Great reaction G!
It's really very simple - this the superior version.
I suggest The Phantom of the Opera from the same concert for your list - more of Marco and a brilliant performance from Tarja too.
A few years back when our guy Marco had some time in his hands entered the finnish Masked Singer to completely destoy it.
"Gangstas Paradise"!
🤘😁🇫🇮💙🪄🎼✨💯👍
Edit....and They do deliver ewry single time 💙🇫🇮
Was working on that gig. Such an rollercoaster night the whole concert 🔥❤️🤘🇫🇮
Oh wow!
Marko is just... amazing.
Emppu is in my opinion one of the greatest guitarist.
There's a nice "promo" video...
ruclips.net/video/1SVwlZv3CNo/видео.htmlsi=ClPS5aUQZwgdxNZp Yep! 😋
This was not a cover, this was a tribute to pink Floyd,in Nightwish version
Thanks! Sent you a message.
Thank you!!!☺️☺️☺️☺️
go for Phantom of the Opera from the same concert (old version). It's Marco and Tarja. you will be positively surprised by that song.
Finally!!!! Someone reacts to this masterpiece. It is a fitting tribute to Pink Floyd.
This Pink Floyd's masterpiece needs to be interpreted, not covered or copied. The term tribute is fitting.
🐕hey Ginx we love Marko and the band rocks this song
The Tribute! 🤓🤟🤟🤟
Thank you! MIKA JAAKKOLA feat. MARKO HIETALA - SOITA (Official Music Video) / Mika Jaakkola Lap Steel
ruclips.net/video/dHI64gOj6Tg/видео.html This one is in Finnish.
Notice that when Marko sings he always achieve the high notes from Floor and Tarja... Annete doesn't count 😂😂😂
And David Gilmore smiled...
If you heard that guitar solo blind. You’d assume it was Gilmour?
Ginx, I think of this as more of a tribute than a cover.
R.
(edit: Personally I like it better than the original.)
I do agree, this version really hit home for me and I was surprised to find that I enjoyed it even more than the original
@@ginxreacts Metal Hammer magazine put this and Phantom of the Opera as 2 Nightwish' entries in top 100 best metal covers of all time. 4 guys were marvelous here.
🤗🍒🤘🏻😘Great song and well done
What take you so long:)? Great it gets you- again:)
Stay Healthy!
As a OF fan of over 45 years, I think this version outdoes the iriginal by a large margin.
Now you see why I believe Emppu to be an unrecognised GOAT of the guitar. I feel he outdoes Gilmour (who approved of this).
Pink Floyd, froreve ❤️❤️❤️🤘🤘🤘.
Hiighwish????
Great reaction ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Go on👍👍👍
