The cross actually exists. It stands in a field near Ypres, Belgium. The transept is engraved "The Khaki Chums Christmas Truce" and the lower part of the nave bears the words "Lest We Forget". The cross that's there now was erected in 1999, marking 85 years since the truce was observed.
The "official" Christmas Truce memorial is in Messines, Belgium, and includes a bronze sculpture of a British and a German soldier shaking hands over a football.

Please don't apologize for stopping & starting the video - it's a reaction channel & you're doing a fantastic job. Thank you for sharing something so many people need to hear. War solves absolutely nothing & thru the progressive course of human history, for all our so-called "intelligence", we have STILL learned absolutely nothing except how to kill more efficiently.

  • @Vanyawwd
    @Vanyawwd 2 месяца назад +17

During this it was mainly 14-29 years olds. They shared gifts like cigarettes, chocolate, bread, canned food, whatever they got on them. They talked about their loved ones back home, shared photos , and even wrote down their home address so they could visit each other after the war
What actually happened was a 16 year old German soldier called out in broken English. “Merry Christmas!” To the British. Both him and a similar aged British soldier met up in the middle to shake hands . The officers weren’t too happy but they allowed it
For many British young men this was their very first time seeing a German person and German young men seeing a British person . Because not all had money to go overseas before the war and such. So all that propaganda of the ‘enemy’ was now gone. The fear wasn’t there. Both were just humans in different uniforms and spoke a different language. And that made the generals and higher ups angry , they wanted and tried to brainwash the boys to have hatred but the Christmas truce taught them completely different
The younger soldiers realised they were almost the same and loved playing games like ball and their hobbies and likes

The guy throwing the grenade from the beginning are the guitarist Tommy Johansson, and wait until you hear him sing, you will have your biggest surprise ever. 😮
His voice are phenomenal good! Tommy have recently quited Sabaton to focus more on his own band Majestica, where he sings and play guitar. Tommy also makes metal covers of famous and well known older songs.
Just try Tommy Johansson covering Queens "Who Wants To Live Forver" and youll see what I mean.
Not all Sabaton songs are this sad. Most Sabaton songs deal with sad or serious events from our history, but not every song makes you wanna cry. 😢
"The Unkillable Soldier" are a good example, its the story of Adrian Carton deWiart, a Belgium warhero who survived 3 wars, 2 planecrashes, a bullet through his eye, shot multiple times, lost his arm, torn off his own finger when doctor refused to amputate.

Those who didn't liked the truce were the generals. They called it unpatriotism and even treason. You have to understand that this was a time when nationalism was very high in Europe (for example, in my country, France, people wanted revenge from a previous war with Germany that France had lost, costing France a part of its western territory).
These christmas truces were rare and the regiments that participated had their soldiers dispatched on other regiments (expecially on regiments fighting in place with high casualties) and their officers executed.

This horror occurred in the area of Belgium called Flanders Field. The Canadian soldier/surgeon/poet John McCrae wrote a poem called "In Flanders Fields."
"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That marked our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
    In Flanders Fields..."

If you want an awesome live song with Sabaton, you should react to en livstid i krig (a lifetime of war) live Scandinavium Gothenburg 2020.
The album Carolus Rex they had released during that time is about a part of Swedish history called the era of great power (stormaktstiden in Swedish) from when Sweden was a much bigger nation with ambitions of expanding
The album was released with both an Swedish and English version, the difference being that the Swedish one tells the story from our/a Swedish soldiers and the English more from outsiders view.
It is the Swedish version they played at that show, so be sure the subtitles are on. I was at that show and all I can say is that you will not regret it.

This was about THE Christmas truce that is known in the history books. There were other truces that they tried to perform later on. They even tried to have an Easter truce between Russians and Germans. the problem with that was that Russians and Germans had different calendars on when the Easter were celebrated.

This took Sabaton several years to do it right.
On December 24t,1914.the German soldiers lit their lanterns and displayed them on the edge of their trenches, carol singing broke out. Soon enough the British and French troops joined in. Christmas greetings, played Soccer and well wishes were exchanged, and offers of a temporary ceasefire were communicated between the trenches.
They also played the most iconic game of Soccer ever recorded.
The truce lasted for two days but when their superior officers found out the soldiers on sll sides were punished. Some were transfered out, some ran,not wanting to fight. And the rest were shot right there for refusing orders to restart the battle once again. The soldiers didnt want to kill those they had met.

For example, getting sober and drug-free is not easy, you need determination and the ability to think about what you really want when the addiction is telling you something different. That's smarts in action. Ignorance of facts is much less important (we can almost always look it up if we need to). Anyway, this song is what got me properly into Sabaton, and I usually cry twice: when Hannes steps out of the trench, and when Pär carves the dates, reminding us that it truly is a war that never ends - my country sent soldiers abroad to fight and die every year since 1914 for over 100 years (it may still be an unbroken run, I'm not sure). Lest We Forget.

    Sabaton History channel!
The long-haired actors... they are the band members, although Joachim doesn't have long hair :)
Floors husband, Hannes, is the one with concussion.
I guess that he asked her, if she was available to do a bit of singing...

Fraternizing was common in early months of the great war. Ofc high officers didn't look that well. Later in the war hate, conditions, enemy, everything got way worse.

I don't know if you know this yet, but Sabaton has two entire albums that are just about WWI and one album devoted to the Thirty Years' War with both English and Swedish versions. Have fun with that knowledge :)

Not to compare but just because you asked: yes similar truces happened in the Gallipoli campaign of 1915, about which Sabaton also has an excellent song

I dont care what your education level is. Everyone, go study WW1 and the madness behind kings and men. It was a massacre no matter how you look at it. Needless death! This song will have so much more emotion once you understand the men's struggles! Love your fucking neighbors! ❤

You look where you can to get your information, that's alright. You're doing it great. Keep on going 💯👍🙏👏👏
The cross you see in the video is still there, and tourists can go and watch it.
The opera singer you here in the end when the text goes is Floor Jansen from Nightwish, it's even mentioned in the end of the text (she's married to the drummer in Sabaton).

After 110 years the (original) cross still stands near Ypres in Belgium as a reminder for the most useless war ever, instigated by politicians who couldn't see the light of day in eachothers eyes, so they send every able man/boy to the front to die! 9million soldiers and almost 8 million civilians died in that war and that's only an estimate, the real figures could turn out higher but was/is impossible to check! The german an allied companies who were there with the truce were almost courtmarshalled for what they did! The german as well as the allied compagnies were after the seize-fire replaced to other positions on the front..., none of them came out alive 😔!

Don't put your self down Lanae. History is not everyone's forte. Floor's husband Hannes is the guy who gets concussed from the grenade in the opening. The opening is a play on the "Carol of the Bells". Did you recognize the voice during the credits. Yup, that was Floor doing her thing.

There is a separate channel called Sabaton History, where they delve a bit deeper into the history that inspired Sabaton songs.

I think you should watch the Sabaton History video about the song, and then watch the song video, it gives it a lot more impact. One I recommend is Hearts of Iron

if you ever want to to do a movie reaction and you are interested in WW1 i would suggest the new version of "All quiet on the Western Front" in original language with subtitles.. Yeah sorry just leaving this here ;)
