The blond German soldier who was the first to come out of the trenches is Sabaton drummer Hannes Van Dahl, and he is married to a certain Floor Jansen of Nightwish, who provides the operatic vocals during the credits. This is indeed an original, as are the vast majority of Sabaton songs. Great reaction dude 🤘
One of the best things I ever heard about this was from a soldier from the British Expeditionary Force "that night we heard singing. We didn't know what to expect until we recognized the sang as Silent Night. We started singing as well. The next morning on Dec 25th we noticed this German soldier was walking across No Man's Land with a small fir tree with candles in its branches. Well we're stunned as we watch him and our Sergeant-Major says to us: get down you bloody fools and shoot him! And I immediately said: *oh shut up Sergeant it's Christmas time!.* Next thing I knew we're filing out of the trenches before we're singing, drinking, swapping sweets, smoking and playing football."
There is a real cross memorial about the Christmas Truce and it's located in Belgium. A quick Google search will produce images of the real thing. And yes, your comment about kicking the ball that becomes a grenade... that's PTSD (called "shell shock" back then) setting in. Awesome reaction, mate !
Thank you for reacting to this. You mentioned Passchendaele - Sabaton's song The Price Of A Mile is about that battle. It's another hard hitter. But if you react to Race To The Sea, also about Belgium in WWI, make sure you watch the music video...
Thank you for a nice reaction!! It did happen in Belgium. There is a cross standing as a memory in Ploegsteert Wood and also a statue in the town Mesen. You should also take the opportunity to listen to Sabatons " Race to the sea " Its about the flooding of the river Yser in Belgium during ww1. Great song!!
Visiting where the Christmas Truce happened is an incredible experience. If you get lost, the kind locals are very helpful. The cross set up by the Khaki Chums in 1999 is still there. Across the little road is a small representation of the battlefield. There is a memorial with lots of soccer balls. And the lawn separates the two sides with barbed wire and trenches. Just to the side is a small cemetery with scattered gravestones. This was the most sane response to war, and we need to honor the Christmas Truce soldiers by stopping wars and getting along with each other.
Yes Hannes was the guy the grenade was thrown at and the first to walk at the enemy. The band did a great job acring out there characters not breaking into laughter but keeping a serious conposure.

Another great reaction! I was hoping you would eventually discover Sabaton. Joakim, the vocalist initially joined the band as a keyboard player, and ended up as the lead singer. I have no doubts that many of the Sabaton Army out there will discover your channel and offer more suggestions. They do have a history channel on RUclips, some amazing content that explains a little more about every song they release. One thing I have always loved about this band is their desire to educate others on real historical events. You always seem to do an amazing job at explaining your thoughts on each topic. I commend you sir.
Sabaton have released 10 albums so far, 9 of them are about war. Their 2 last albums, The Great War and The War to End All Wars are about WW1. They have been around for 25 years😉 And they are great Live. Groetjes uit Brugge 🤘
The part that gets me the most in that video is when the second soldier (played by guitarist Chris) shouts "Stop!" And then climbs over the trench while raising his hand.
This song always makes me cry. WW1 (Great War) is my historical passion, and the Christmas Eve Truce is such a heartbreaking "opportunity lost" point in the story.
Friend, you can't miss the Christmas album by you tuber and former Sabaton guitarist Tommy Johansson. The band is called Magestica. The album is inspired by the literary work Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It is a beautiful album. Greetings from Mexico. 🇲🇽🤘
In war, strange things can happen, and Sabaton wrote a song about one of those episodes. "The Last battle" is about when US Army soldiers joined forces with German Army soldiers to protect French V.I.P. prisoners from Waffen-SS. It took place in the spring of 1945 at Schloss Itter in Austria.
yup, there's that one as well as the Franz Stigler, the Smoking Snakes, this etc. as i always say: just because we're foes, that doesn't necessarily mean we're enemies.
There is also another story where American and German soldiers ended up spending the night in a cabin, owned by a German woman and her son, during WW2 because of a snowstorm. Hallmark made a movie about it, but same idea as the truce in 1914. They had a Christmas dinner together with the woman and her son, and then went on their own way the next day. True story.
The story about the truce is a bit more complicated. The Pope Benedictus XV Had asked the involved countries to "let the guns fall silent , at Christmas Eve. None would even consider that option. How ever, the soldiers in the trenches where suffering and they took the initiative to seize fire. Not everywhere on the front just here and there. And then the miracle happened. The soldiers started to sing Chrismas songs on both sides and eventually came together, like in the video, in no mans land. At some places the truce even held till New Years Eve. On the other side, some troops had to be transferred. Because it became hard to fire at faces you knew. Another miracle was, that nobody was courts marshalled or punished. Sabaton writes songs about the history of war. Not taken sides. Just telling amazing stories. one of my other favorites is Nightwitches.
Thank you so much for sharing a bit about this. I have learned about it in school, but that was a long time ago. Great song. Definitely want to hear more of their songs.
Sabaton's drummer Hannes van Dahl is married to Floor and they have two children together. He is the blonde guy who has the main role and was the first one over the edge.
Great reaction Sabaton certainly have a history channel , it even got an academic award for education of the public couple of years ago, so well worth a look. there they have a episode for most of their history based songs, over 120 videos by now, it would be interesting to see how you react to the history episode for this one.
RUclips didn't sent me the notification that you reacted to this MASTERPIECE of a song! It's a real story, although not everyone stopped fighting. I'm so glad you watched it!
This is unusually cinematic for their music videos partially because they wanted to get this story just right because it's so touching and well known, but also because during covid all major movie productions were paused so folks in Chechia who often do action film effects had plenty of available time in their schedules.
Sabaton do have their own history channel that is also in association with another amazing history channel called "Timeghost". Another cracking one to check out is "Bismark". That is fantastic
Another WWI song you might enjoy is Christmas 1915 by Celtic Thunder -Act Two 1988. I discovered them on my local PBS station. Saw them in concert 3 times 😍🎼. The original group was the best. They have changed /evolved since.
Sabaton always puts a lot of effort into their music videos. As they say, they want the best they can do for their fans. And that's yet another thing we love them for. I like your reaction, you're showing emotions and with Sabaton it's a given. Every song of theirs evokes emotions. The music videos to see: "Bismarck" "Race to the Sea" "Steel Commanders" "Soldier of Heaven" "The Last Stand" That's only a few. During ww1 it was mainly 14 to 25 year olds. During Christmas a German soldier around 17 years old yelled out in broken English. "Merry Christmas" to the British. Him and a similar aged British soldier met up in no mans land to shake hands. The propaganda, the hatred taught back home by the gov, by the politicians, the fear of the 'monster' was gone once both sides saw each other without violence. Each other was just another human being who wore a different uniform and spoke a different language. For some British young men it was their first time seeing a German person and vice versa. Not everyone had the funds to go overseas before the war. But the teenage soldiers now saw a friend to learn about each other language, their country what it looked like, their hobbies and family. Both sides talked, played ball, shared photos of loved ones, gave gifts like cigarettes, canned food, chocolate anything they had and even gave each other a paper of their address to hopefully meet again after the war. Their address, that is so much love and trust for another person, a stranger they were at one point almost forced to fight before the truce happened. Of course most officers and higher ups were not at all happy about this, it was allowed once, Neither side higher ups and greedy politicians wanted to see how human the other was. Those in the truce after had to be moved elsewhere because they refused to fight their new friends, and refusing orders was dangerous. The military back then was brutal and denying to fight led to a firing squad.
It was a beautiful moment in time when it happened. It ended with them having to go back and fight each other but then commanders found out about it and were punished. Especially on the German side but they all got into trouble.
The tune he is playing on the piano, is a variation of carol of the bells, a fantastic Christmas tune. Although not as powerful as this, the theme of the Christmas truce has been used in a Christmas song before. Jona Lewie sang don’t stop the cavalry, and used the same subject matter for his video.

On December 24th,1914.the German soldiers lit their lanterns and displayed them on the edge of their trenches, carol singing broke out. Soon enough the British and French troops joined in. Christmas greetings, played Soccer and well wishes were exchanged, and offers of a temporary ceasefire were communicated between the trenches. They also played the most iconic game of Soccer ever recorded. The truce lasted for two days but when their superior officers found out the soldiers on sll sides were punished. @bridgetmccracken1381 Sorry i misread , but it was in 1914 around Plugstreet that was in the Ypres salient . Sabaton have another song about the salient price of a mile. In those four years there where around 600000 casualities in the salient. And each day at 8pm they blowing the last post for the missing it was today for the 33414 time less we forget.
Another song that fits with this by Sabaton is "Price of a mile". Every time I listen to stuff about WW1 I always think that they were lions led by sheep. Pointless death and for what?

@@NativeTexan-fm5dy are you mental?? The US only joined WW1 because you were forced. Same with WW2 because you were atttacked by Japan. Get your history facts straight before you talk BS. I know, truth hurts: we don't care about 4th July or Thanksgiving either.
You gotta see Bismarck, on that song band was funded partially by war ships game
Hoi Saeed!
As mentioned below,Race to the Sea.King Albert was probably the last king, leader, president or whatever person in total power that fought in a war side by side with his countrymen.Awesome reaction, keep em coming brother.Just 190 ish or so left to go Lol.
Yes it is an original. They wanted to do it for some time and they took several years to write. They wanted to do it right.
Thanks for letting me know! Incredible song and video.
Race to the Sea by Sabaton...You will not regret it
Please hear this song to the end. Floor sings the rest to end.
I did!
@@SaeedReacts. thx
Might wanna check out race to the sea by sabaton. It's about Belgium. I wrote with them they said the instruments were a bit soggy afterwards.😅
Absolutely love this one 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Floor's sining at the end is perfect
Sabaton are playing Antwerp on Dec 02 2025 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Wow, 2025. That is longterm scheduling.
I could never be an artist. I dont like things in my agenda for that long 😅🤣
@SaeedReacts. 😂😂 They just posted about 3 hours ago 👍🏻
No bullets fly is a must, as are Last stand and A lifetime in war live from gothenburg, make sure to have caption on
Thanks for the recommendation and advice!
Sabaton Army check in!
Its a original song Sabaton Wright all There Musica theme selfs accept from 1916 that Wats å Tribute love from Sweden Sabaton land🇸🇪❤
To answer your question, yes this is an original song. I believe that it was this song that Joakim spent almost ten years writing.
on minute 3:46 came Hannes....Floors husband#.
Thanks for letting me know!
@@SaeedReacts.
1. Tochter Freya
2. Tochter Lucy
I have seen full Hollywood productions with less story and depth than some Sabaton videos...
You have to check out their song Bismarck for another epic video and song!
sabaton is about war and history and everything is based on true events
Nice reaction.
Thanks!
Rond Ploegsteert gebeurde dit met kerstmis 1914 .
Bedankt voor de info!
Its great to watch this video in this difficould german -time , where the gouverment search next world-war ! We all have to be very carefull ❣️
I believe the actual scene was represented in the movie War Horse
The soldiers on both sides was convinced that the war would be over before Christmas ... It was ! Just Christmas 1918! The war to end all wars indeed! 🙄🙄🙄
I'd mispronounced Passchendale in my head previously. Thanks for that.
✌🏼🙄🎶❤️🍁💥🎄✨️🕊
After the truce was over, the officers from both sides had to execute some of their own soldiers who refused to go back to fighting.
It so funny to me... You check the comments and you can bat your a on it someone goes Hannes is married to Floor.😂 Noone talking about them having a little daughter called Freya.😅
You should check out "Race to the Sea... sabaton
Iron Maiden did a song Paschendale
Its good, in the level of Tarjas 2 x-mass records!!
The fact that it actually happened was a true Christmas miracle. I showed my Brother this video as he is a Vet and served in "Nam, he pointed out that it could have never happened in that war because they did not worship God and did not celebrate Christmas. He made a valid point
Sorry but your brother is wrong it did happen, and both sides did worship God and celebrated Christmas .
@@abbykeyzer It happened in 1916 NOT in the Vietnam war in which my Brother fought. That was my statement if you would have read it.
❤❤❤
Try 40 to 1....a song about the Polish army fighting until the very last man...hits home for me..very powerful.
Thanks for the recommendation.
@SaeedReacts. Ofcourse my opinion is biased being Polish/Slav but it's still a great war story/song😅
Hanes took one for the team!🎸🤘
Tommy J❤
Horrible to think it was like that and much much more. Although there were Xmas sound.he started with a voice filled with anguish.
Sad to think war/hate and fighting never ends. Sometimes just clandestine. And yes we are watching a war and devastating mini movie. Greetings from South Africa
All citizens of British Empire countries knew this history.
I didn’t know you were Belgian when I posted this!!😅. My Dutch in-laws lived through similar in WW2
I sadly never got to talk with my grandparents about their experience living through it. I heard stories from other people. I did visit Flandres Fields Museum in Ypres. Lest we forget.
This song and video is truly incredible.
It was definitely unofficial and it scared the generals to death.
Thanks for informing me about that. Much appreciated.
Yes fore is marid whit the drummer and now count as a swedich ....
I can recommend you to watch the yarnhubs Christmas truce animated storie
How are you doing health and mood wise?
