My 7yo son walks in and, unprompted, declares "Now THAT'S good music!"
Raising your kid right!
Good ear on that kiddo!
Sounds like the type of song you'd hear in a saloon back in the 1800's. I can only get through 30 seconds of this on the piano without messing up.
Maybe because.... it's ragtime?
If you find this impressive on piano, try a german acapella quintet. ruclips.net/video/9MHKv_4GsNw/видео.html
It gives me such Carlie Brown feelings
@@cefxsd40m-29 Certainly gives that vibe for me as well now that you mention it.
Playin’ that piano like he’s ringin’ a bell!
Honestly the hardest song I've ever attempted to play in my life. Billy Joel is one of the best piano players out there, no doubt about it.
Forgotten Music The song isn't that hard but his speed is absolutely ridiculous.
@@willsondurbin2536 yeah I was going to say the same thing, I actually played it for a recital when I was 16 and it was honestly a little under my level, and I was in the middle of the skill level for the students my teacher had
After all, Billy is the "Piano Man"!
hardly counts as the song if you don't play fast. After all, this doesn't even sound that fast because of how it just flows.
Billy Joel is a classically trained pianist who studied with the great American pianist Morton Estrin on Long Island, growing up as a child, so he has the foundations to be a classical concert pianist, but chose to be a rock pianist and a song writer instead. Joel is an absolute genius who can play anything by ear, and his creative mind is impeccable, having composed such classics like "The Piano Man", but credit must be given to Morton Estrin for instilling him the fluidity and the virtuosic technique and musicality that can take on any piece of music, regardless of its difficulty.
There are songs that, whenever I hear them, make me wish that I still played the piano.
This is one of them.
God as a pianist I love this song.
Put it on 1.25
That's how fast Billy Joel plays it live
same xd
Insanity!
Ó jeez
A decade ago, my sister told me “If you can play this song, I’ll give you $100.”
That hundred bucks is still sitting in her sock drawer.
so there's $100 free dollars there after 10 years and you haven't taken it , why?
Dude I can’t even play air piano to this so don’t blame yourself.
Even for half the money I'll play it for her ;-). In fact it is not THAT hard, as it is in the key of C.
Oh it is? That makes it easier then having to use sharps in flats. I’m gonna give it a whirl
Huib van Mierlo Not necessarily. It all depends on the actual piece. Sometimes using black keys is easier to play than the white keys. It all depends on the technique - acrobatics, arm movement and getting your hand on the keys in time. As a matter of fact, sometimes playing white keys is harder because your fingers are not curled in naturally as in black keys, and you have more leaps, subsequently making more arm motion, but then you must release any tension to play the next passage, and you must do it very quickly. Prokofiev piano concerto No. 3 is in C major and is one of the hardest pieces to play. Or Schumann Toccato Op. 7 extremely difficult piece to pull off.
This was used for Granada TV's Fun Factory around 1980 and BBC Radio Merseyside's Hold Your Plums both hosted by Liverpool's comic Billy Butler in the U.K.
I need this song as my wake up alarm
I managed to have a mp3 of it, but I had to factory default my phone so its long gone
Trust me you don’t, it’s just gonna make you hate the song for waking you up
Also … John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" !
heard my grandma play this on the piano yesterday💕
it was incredible
you sir/mam are lucky
my granny dolly plays this on the banjo with harmonica got a Grammy too ...i love the
grass brew blues.........
You shoulda recorded it and put it up on here! Seeing this comment alone made me smile!

I was on a Royal Caribbean cruise in 2019 and they had a gig named The Stowaway Piano. The guy had a rolling baby grand and would pop up randomly in elevators, promenades, even the casino. This was the one song he consistently played and he played it absolutely perfectly. People were stunned at how good he was. I hope to learn it one day
What "blazing" keyboard work. Id never would've guessed Billy Joel.
you have much to learn, my young padawan
Just heard this for the first time today and it's awesome 👍👍👍
same. music is simple atemporal.
I can't get this out of my head! But I don't care because it's so incredibly catchy. Billy Joel is one of the greatest piano players to ever walk this earth. Amazing song and amazing album!
cellini051 he IS the best piano player in my opinion👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍
I'm glad you said that because I think too! He can play anything. My favorite musician of all time!
Why is Billy nicknamed "The Piano Man?" I think listening to this track goes a long way to answering that question.
jonkheere1 Definitely, this just proves he's The Piano Man!
Scott Joplin also.
Siskel And Ebert’s First Show Brought Me Here.
I've been obsessed with this song since 1979.
My wife and I were stationed with the USAF in Germany from 1979-1982. This was the song the Armed Forces Radio station signed on and off with every day. This song always takes me back to that time in our lives.
Cool memory!
Wow! I've always liked Billy Joel's music but I never realized he was this good. Double wow!
Have you heard his classical stuff played by Richard Joo? The writing is fabulous!
Why "was"? He IS one of the best!
Look up the live versions, they'll take your breath away
“Was”? More like “still is!”
@@theautisticsuperchannel Exactly ! And I admire the man he's become.
This makes me think of two guys chasing each other in cars, and each one trying to run the other off the road.
No less than a brilliant hidden gem from the catalog of a master. Shades of Keith Emerson here.
Celebrating my 53rd birthday today and Billy Joel's 70th on the 9th... by binge-watching all his videos!! Happy Birthday Billy!! It's been a long Beautiful ride!!
Happy birthday!!!
Best piano music ever written...
Billy Joel is unreal
Used to be the background music for the Zippo awards on STL local sports every Friday night!
A local St. Louis station used this song for their Friday night sports segment called the Zippo awards.
The best, the worst, the wildest and wackiest in the world of sports. I believe that was what zip rzeppa would say
I was able to see Billy Joel at the Amway Canter in Orlando, and I loved his performance. Although he did not play this song, he is the best pianist to ever live, and sing.
Everytime someone calls me, i hear this beautiful peace of music :D
Masterpiece
Very underrated album! Better than what comes next-uptown girl....
Happy 69th Birthday Billy Joel. Thank you for all the wonderful songs and music. It couldn't have been possible if it had not been for you.
Nice.
Ayyyyy
If I ever had an ice cream van that would be my tune 😂
I first heard this back in the 1990s. NBC Sports used it as background music during a video clip of elephants playing soccer. (Really!) I wrote to NBC and asked the name of the song and the artist. They wrote back; was I surprised to learn it was Billy Joel!
They also used it on the very first episodes of Siskel & Ebert's show on PBS.
The Theme to ‘Hold Your Plums’ on UK radio.
I am speekless. Das beste was ich seit langem gehört habe.
FUN FACT: Siskel & Ebert’s original theme when they were on Channel 11 in Chicago.
I love this song. I used to play it on the piano all the time when I was a kid. (Wish I still could....it's been way too long since I sat down at a piano!). When I got older and started writing screenplays, it inspired one of my first short screenplays called "The Hot Date." Thank you, Billy Joel. What an amazing musician (and teacher) you are.
He is so talented.....i had the privilege of a concert pianist play this in front of one of the world's greatest and most respected boogie woogie/stride/ragtime players at what was then Charley's Crab restaurant in the northern Detroit suburb of Troy......meeting of the Gods
My friend Paul would play this all the time when we were kids. Looking back he was quite talented. Brings back memories
Superb! One of Billy's best instrumental songs!
I'm playing this while making root beer from scratch in my kitchen. Got to have good vibes on brew day. Thank you Mr. Joel for the great music!
This song is just fantastic. Such a talent 👏🏻🤘🏻
seeing billy play this with lang lang on the 12th of april this year was incredible!
I have loved Elvis songs since the 50
MY FAVORIITE BILLY JOEL COMPOSITION!!
I've always loved this song ever since I heard in the early 90s when I started getting into Billy Joel's music. I've been playing piano since 1990 and I've always played my own version of this song but now I'm learning the proper way to play it. It is quite a challenge.
I have this song for my piano recital😅
Fantastic. He's a magician. I'll be seeing him for a second time in September.
Love this song every time I feel a bit down makes me feel so much better. Brilliant work. Thanks Billy p
This was on the flip side of a single I got in the 70's!
I break it down into individual chords and then put the fills in. You would be amazed that once you get the framework of the song how simple it can actually be. Same thing with other ragtime tunes.
Had this on the back of my 45s when I was 10, never played it. Good song.
How did I just find out about this amazing song? 😍😍😍 I didn't know Billy Joel wrote ragtime!
I hope I can play this someday!
Love me some STREETLIFE SERENADE!!!
This has been stuck in my head for a long time.
One would say for "The Longest Time"
This piece is TFW the chickens got out, but since you happen to have nowhere to be and nothing to do at the moment, rounding them up turns out to be a most enjoyable challenge.
My percussion group is playing this!! Soo FAST! 😂😭
Learned this song when i was 10 im gonna revisit now that ive heard it again
He is the piano Man!
Debbie Gibson who is fan of Billy Joel named her recording studio in her garage "Root Beer Rag Studios"
Pre Covid there was a piano in Bristol Bus Station and on one occasion I attempted to play this but failed miserably. The few waiting passengers that heard seemed impressed though.
GREAT, just GREAT!!!!!!
Wonderful, absolutely fantastic performance!
About 45 years ago his fan club magazine was called the root beer rag, alas as a young child I couldn’t pony up the money to join...
This is why he is The Piano Man!
Ha ha love it 👍👍
Ladies, and Gentlemen.I give you The Piano Man.
Love this song!!! Billy Joelel, a LEGEND!
Ah yes, Billy Joelel
Good interstate traveling music.
Awesome song.
Thanks to the epidemic, I had time sit down and learn this once and for all (although no-one will mistake my playing for Billy Joel...what a gifted musician!) All of a sudden the Joplin rags don't seem quite as difficult
You do you. I recently started learning Rap God.
El puto amo
this should be the music over an silent movie. :)
Thank You for posting this. Just heard this for first time in at least 25 years the other day on Sirius. I remember as a little boy, NBC-TV and other sports shows would play this on say NFL and MLB games in the early 1980's. Especially on Video Highlights featuring errors and other miscues during games.
Awesome piano melodies!
Billy Joel is an amazing piano player. Elton John and Billy Joel together even more amazing.
I can’t even air play this for more
Than 15 secs
Awesome!
聴けてよかったです!ありがとうございます
a very happy song !
This song goes hard
WOW!!!
“OPENING SOON ….at a Theater Near You”
Starring Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel.
how cool BJ!
I got an ad for beer before the song started 😂
This is a verry good
The album cover reminds me of the intersection of Spring St and Johnston St in Fitzroy, Melbourne, VIC, Australia. Check it on google maps. Let me know if you can see the resemblance too.
Which St. Louis, MO folk from the 1980s remember this as the background music for Zip Rzeppa's Zippo Awards every Friday night at 10:30?
Wow.
How can you dislike this???
like this
Listening to this at 1.25 speed is mind blowing.
+Jackson Betz
Jesus christ! I would pay $500 for a ticket just to see Billy Joel try and play it that fast.
+tangerinebeam He still does it in his concerts,Like yourself I would pay the same amount, If not more.
+tangerinebeam Look for one of his live performances from 1978, it's not THAT fast, but it's still amazing!
+tangerinebeam God Bless his aching fingers.
Well, try 2X, that's even harder
This is how you make a piano talk.
Root beer rage was played before many San Diego Padres baseball game pregame shows & also for their post game shows as well
I cant hear this without having to think of how the Wise Guys decided to perform this, as they do, a capella, and make a giant show out of it.
What is this tasty tune?!
fuck yes
I am taking piano lessons and my instructor can actually play this...I'd love to learn but just listening to this makes me tired lol
Trisha Urvan It's surprisingly not as hard as you'd expect. Think of it as a lot of repetition with some added things in between each "verse."
My fingers hurt just thinking about it but I do wanna play this so badly
@@rsh947 yeah played it for a recital when I was 16 and honestly it was under my level
I mean, I learned it when I was 12. Try it!
My chorus teacher just chills at the piano while everyone gets set and plays sometimes. The other day he was sitting there and started playing this and it was pretty cool. Granted sometimes he busts out flight of the bumblebee like its no problem
What an incredible pianist! Got to see him in concert, and when he plays the piano it's just an awesome thing to listen to and watch.
Some advice if you see him in concert, he gives attractive women front row. If you happen to be a lady, dress up nice and go early, and you'll probably get free front row. The lady next to me had been brought up to front row three times in the past.
OK. And what does he do with really ugly ones? Throw them out of the show?
were you a hot chick in the front with her or is she ugly now and in the regular seats with the rest of us?
Luke Boone where ya from?
Waluigi quartet in the back round at 1:00 was I the only one to notice
A Ruggiero peter griffin... hyaaah hyaaah hyaaah hyaaaaaaah
Oh my god I cant unhear it
I heard it first time tho
I cant unhear it,wow
It was playing right when I read this comment.
my brother and I tried to play ping pong to Root Beer Rag back in the day... lol, oh we had fun. My sister let me play my album on her turntable and me and Mike gave 'er a try... we def could not keep up.
Good ole Zippos.
