Lyrics:
I am the entertainer
And I know just where I stand
Another serenader
And another long-haired band
Today I am your champion
I may have won your hearts
But I know the game, you'll forget my name
And I won't be here in another year
If I don't stay on the charts
I am the entertainer
And I've had to pay my price
The things I did not know at first
I learned by doin' twice
Ah, but still they come to haunt me
Still they want their say
So I've learned to dance with a hand in my pants
I let 'em rub my neck and I write 'em a check
And they go their merry way

“ I won’t be here in another year” my brother in Christ you are literally Billy Joel
Lol
I'm 38. Started on Joel when I was 26. I'm into rock and metal but the energy his songs provide. Not heard anything like it. Forever a Billy fan!
I’ve been waiting a long time for this, but we’re finally at a million views
One of his "Bolero" songs. Slowly layering the intensity. So much fun. Oh, Mr Joel, how much beauty have you brought into my life...
One of the truly brilliant "build up" songs. Just listened to it for the first time in a few years and still gives me goosebumps how all the instruments come in and build up to the big finale.
"It was a beautiful song, but it ran too long. If ya gonna have a hit, ya gotta make it fit. So they cut it down to 3:05"...My favorite lyric of this song. I hear ya Billy.
What song is he referencing with that line? I've always wondered
@@mouthy_maestrod2992 Piano Man
@@MichaelSheehy75 interesting! Thanks
@@MichaelSheehy75Yeah but piano man is 5:40
@@toxicdefault6753 Yes, and the 1973 single is 4:30. I always saw the song as figurative- with some hyperbole- vs. factual, and probably not completely about Billy himself. 3:05 may just a be time representing a typical 7" 45 single release which was commercial radio friendly.
The line ,"Things I did not know at first I learned by doing twice" that's my life.
The talent to write and perform this song and others like "We Didn't Start the Fire" (which contained over 100 events over a 40 year period,) is completely off the charts. How can you possibly remember the lyrics even if you wrote the song? Billy Joel is one of the most talented musicians of all time.
Growing up with Billy on the radio, I didn't know of this song until I bought a 2 disc set. It shocked me. It's angry. It's self-aware. And it's a marvelous representation of the love-hate relationship successful musicians endure if they have any integrity about them.
Maybe, but he seems upset about "laying all kinds of girls." Most guys wouldn't complain about that. I understand about the issues, but you should also acknowledge the privileges and perks that come with the lifestyle.
@@marcschneider4845And "I make all kinds of money when I get on the stage." Most guys would love a life where you "lay all kinds of girls and "make all kinds of money." It's possible even if you're only 5'5" tall. Lol.
🎵He misjudged the game, no one forgot his name, we're all still here after 50 years, though he's long gone from the charts🎵
I don't think he was saying that about him specifically. More of a scathing criticism of the industry in general
You are right he is the goat I just bought tickets to see him again (saw for the fourth time in Tampa recently) I wish I had seen him live more than 4 times
Despite the happy melody, this is quite a scathing, bitter indictment of the music " business " at the time Mr Joel wrote this. This was the life he was living, which makes the song ingenious, happy sound conveying a bitter message. The sad thing is, not much has changed, save the medium( no longer records/tapes, downloads/clicks now, music quality still being watered down). Mr. Joel didn't know how wise these lyrics would be( I'd bet he still cynically smiles about this song today).
Michael Baucom don’t forget his personal peeve with the shortening of Piano Man, or the accidental production of Cold Spring Harbor, which was probably still fresh in his mind
@@thezombiecreeper Or getting ripped off for millions by his manager , brother of his wife , Elizabeth Webber .
@@gregoryroessner9635 That was years after this was written. That happened in the late '80s, early '90s, which probably changed and enhanced the meaning of this song for him.
I never knew that was his wife’s brother. Wow that makes it even worse!
I feel like this whole album is kind of like that and I’ve always thought intentionally. I’ve always looked at it like it has this flashy upbeat sound but ultimately that’s not the real sentiment it’s kind of “fake” like LA which from what I’ve always thought was a pretty negative experience for him hence moving back and Turnstiles
The best Billy Joel song of all, in my opinion. Almost all of his ranges are put to the test, both instrumenally and vocally. Joel doesn't fail to hit a grand slam at all! 💖💖💖
This song hits me in such a strange way. It’s extraordinarily jubilant and uplifting to hear, but the lyrics are telling such a contrasting story. Struggle, frustration, manipulation, and wearing a façade to stay relevant and survive in the industry. Having your best and most meaningful work, picked apart and packaged into a predetermined box. My mind feels sad while my soul feels happy. The juxtaposition of this song is brilliant and I cannot get enough of it. It is musically, extraordinary, and lyrically, compelling. The accompaniment building and growing and changing with every verse to a spectacular climax, then stripping it back to re-state the meaning of the song when the lyrics repeat for the first time. What a composer!
Almost every artist has written a song about how they got ripped off by the music industry.
Nothing better than passive aggressive Billy Joel.
There's a place in the world for the angry young man.
That there is.
Everybody loves his passive-aggressiveness now 😁
I love it when the piano kicks in.
Hands down top 3 billy Joel song for me. Love the lyrics and they always make me laugh
Ironically, I'd say he has transcended a lot of the lyrics in this song. A true legend.
"But I know the game, you'll forget my name
And I won't be here in another year
If I don't stay on the charts"
Given that he hasn't made album since the early 90s and he's still my favorite artist I guess he was wrong about this.
Though he hadn't released a new pop album since 1993, in 2001 he released a classical album called _Fantasies and Delusions_ but although he wrote the music for it, Billy didn't think he could play the piano well on every song, so he drafted in Korean-Brit pianist Richard Joo, who was recommended to him by Billy's younger half-brother, Alexander.
Anyone listening to xm spotlight Billy Joel channel (#4)?
Really enjoying for the last month!
And I havn't even been alive that long. Yeah, just a bit wrong.
But I have found him on the discount rack...
omg RIGHT??
As old as he is now, Billy Joel still puts on a fantastic live show. Saw him in Ohio last year, and he literally did not miss a single word in any of his songs - even hit all the high notes beautifully. While this is probably my favorite song of his, getting to watch him perform Piano Man live was other-worldly. Talent like his has all but died off. There are only a handful of artists still alive that are on the same skill level as Billy.
One of his best songs, yet grossly underrated - never a big hit. Guess he should've cut it down to 3:05
The Mexican Connection, Los Angelinos, Last of the Big Time Spenders, Streetlife Serenader, Souvenir, etc. - this whole album is a Gold Mine.
😂
This comment is grossly underrated.
Every song on this album I’ve clicked on says something along the lines of how underrated it is! Lol
He still is one of the top ten singer,'s ever
His voice hasn't aged, I thank him tremendously for taking care of his pipes - and for seeming like a relevant badass despite not releasing a true full studio album in over 20 years.
I'm sure Billy will be amused to hear anyone thinks he took care of his pipes. :)
One of best
@@MrTayloreh which is hilarious since he used to smoke so much lol
@@aprammus9580 it's ironic; some of the most popular singers of the 20th century are New Yorkers who smoked multiple packs per day for decades; Billy ... Barry Manilow .... Neil Diamond .... and probably a few more

And 4 min 30 on the single
And 3:05 on the radio

@@TheBoomhahaha yes it is dawg
The 45 rpm single of "The Entertainer" has a timing of 3 minutes and 5 seconds on its label. How did he know that in advance? Genius I guess. Also file this song in the "Based On A True Story" category. Great tune dude.
That would piss me off too.
That synth gives the song this really giddy feeling, its wonderful
I think Billy Joel was a big fan of ELP(Emerson Lake & Palmer). That's where I think the synth idea comes from. Or at least that's where I would guess the idea of the synth for this songs comes from. Sounds almost exactly lika ELP synth sound. But I agree, that's one of the best parts of the song.
@@taowaycamino4891 It's definitely a mini moog synth, popular back then (and now!) in music
@@neil73 Maybe part of your point is basically that it probably has nothing to do with Joel being an ELP fan. Maybe, but I would need further facts to confirm your point since I heard a Billy Joel interview where he mentions being a big fan of YES and ELP(Emerson, Lake and Palmer) and the song, at least on the synth section, has an ELP beat to it in addition to using the same synth as ELP.
@@taowaycamino4891 Many different musicians in this period used the Moog. It wouldn't surprise me at all to know Joel was a prog rock fan: his musical talent and influences are enormous.
It's almost Celtic sounding.
These are some of the most honest lyrics I have ever heard in a song. This is song perfectly describes what the music industry is all about.
I heard this song today after many years. He has so many good ones its hard to pick a favorite. For the musicians out there listen to his piano playing in I think the 5th verse. Its inexplicable (and he does it live) how he plays that and sings simultaneously. Insane talent.
Most underrated song ever, 💕 this song, 👍😃.
The entire song and lyrics give me chills 👏
I feel it too.
"Played all kinds of palaces, _and laid all kinds of girls_-BADOM BAMDOM DODO" -those drums killed me, such a great line lol
If my memory serves me, Billy was using studio musicians, the drummer was Ron Tutt, who played with Neil Diamond for years.

@J G I had to look into what you said. There were so many accusations of inflated ego and narcissism that I was confused. Billys ex then her new ex and he probably has a huge ego himself. Egos everywhere but narcissism? I wonder.

Every snot-nosed wannabe music snob who talks about how music used to be driven by "passion" and "the artist" needs to listen to this song on loop for a few hours.
The music industry was all sizzle and no steak then as now.
Even if it was just as driven by money then as now, music was still better then than it is today.
I don't know if it is from the aid of technology to streamline music production, laziness, or just degradation of culture, but songs today are objectively worse.
The most popular songs today are generally either pop or rap, both of which primarily center around sexual acts, drugs, or violence. They also repeat lyrics a lot, use a lot of autotune, and generally don't have any deeper meaning to understand. Most of the "good songs" from more recent are often the ones that don't fit in these groups.
Yeah there were songs that fit in these groups earlier, though they would generally only commit one of these offenses as opposed to WAP, which likely commits all the offenses listed and really shows how far our culture has declined.
At least the artists slaved over their songs with interesting themes instead of slapping some lyrics together, adding auto tune and calling it a day.
@@malevolence89 Dat survivorship bias
@@malevolence89 You think you have a compelling argument here? This reads like a greatest hits compilation of every teenager who picked up a best of Queen CD in the shop one time.
@@Burkutace27 Why must I be stupid? Is that the easiest way to defend your argument, if all who critique it are stupid?
Sure, survivorship bias. That is why we specifically narrow down on the years 70s-80s as opposed to the thousands of other years of human history. You might disagree but I don't think even the best of the 1960s or 1950s compare to the 1970s.
Songs may have been just as focused on money then as now, but they couldn't just press buttons on a computer to auto generate lyrics and use auto tune to change their voices. Singers today can rely on technology as a much bigger crutch which negatively impacts their music.
In fact I would wager the reason you even made this comment to call everyone wannabe music snobs is to feel like a hipster and go against popular opinion, which is that music used to be better than it is now.
And just the fact that this is even believed to be popular opinion would support the idea that there is a valid point here, that music today sucks.
@@Burkutace27 The song says that the industry was crap then, so not sure what your point is. It think it's quite clever that he utilized very 'sizzle' to say his piece. If you can't see the intentional cynicism, well, sorry. And no, I don't think he's the 'greatest' of all time, but he is pretty good.
A great one, love it.
It's hilarious that BILLY JOEL was worried about becoming obsolete.

After the success of "Piano Man", which AM stations played at 3:05 while FM stations played the album cut, Joel didn't have a follow up hit. This song came out in the summer of 1975 and stations in Pittsburgh didn't play it. I was into AM DX then and heard it often on the smaller stations in the counties around town.

I don't know what happened. I recently got a taste of office life and was one heck of a wake up call. After that bad experience, I found myself wanting to pursue what I actually wanted to do after college. A career in entertainment. I already know entertainment is a pretty competitive industry, but hey. beats being bored 24/7. I think I always wanted to perform for people, but never got the guts to do it until I took theater because I thrived there.

and found gold anyway
This album was underrated, by Billy Joel, himself!
He felt the pressure from the record label, to rush to market a follow-up to his huge hit, "Piano Man."
It's sad that he didn't recognize his own genius, during his creative prime.
Lennon & McCartney rushed out their first few albums, with a stellar percentage of classic hits.
It's also true that great artists always think they could've done a better job, if given more time.
