Part Three of my French Revolution series picks up after the demise of the Estates General with the formation of the National Assembly. After Louis XVI locked them out of their meeting room, the members of the National Assembly swore in the Tennis Court Oath that they would not adjourn until they had written a constitution for France. Louis allowed the National Assembly to keep meeting, but brought troops to Versailles just in case he felt the need to disperse the meeting by force at a later date.
The presence of troops at Versailles resulted in unrest in Paris, which led to the storming of the Bastille on July 14, 1789. There was also unrest in the countryside, where a grain shortage led to peasant revolts known as the Great Fear. In response to the Great Fear, the National Assembly passed the Decrees of August 4th, which eliminated "feudalism," or the privileges given to the nobility under the Old Regime.
This lecture was designed primarily for students preparing for exams in AP European History and Western Civilization, but is appropriate for high school and college World History students and for lifelong learners, as well.
A really good history teacher is a beautiful thing
Hey Tom , I know this video's a bit old, but hopefully you will read this. Thanks for all these videos, finally understand this topic and also wanted to say that those "quiz" parts are really helpful so maybe you could use them more often in never videos
Greetings from Georgia (country) :p
+Chez Thanks for the feedback, Chez! Looking forward to adding some videos to this series this year.
I'm finding your videos really entertaining and helpful. It makes them so much more memorable to me. Thanks for the review my homefry.
These videos have helped me to get a good idea of what we are going be learning about in the next unit. I can't wait until it is started in class!
Mr. Richey, you make Ap Euro a lot less dreadful. Thank you for your videos!!!
I just watch and read history for fun and I’ve listened to stuff before on French Revolution and it was always too confusing this really clears up exactly how each event led into the next event
this is just what i've been looking for! perfectly explained, where's the next one?!
You're a legend!!!!!! SO GOOD! I feel so prepared for my euro final (which is tomorrow)! Thank you!
3:22 I started laughing in a silent library haha that was good.
Haha I'll have to look that up. Laughter is supposed to be a great learning tool!
Excellent work, sir! You are a terrific teacher!
I wish this guy was my teacher
Now this makes history fun too learn. I've got 99 problems and a national assembly ain't one. Hilarious and informational at the same time. :D
I knew Mr. Richey was packing HEAT!!!
I wish I could have went to the Tennis Court Dance Party. I bet 18th century France had a great rave scene.
They would party like they were about to die because many of them were. LOL!
Hello from Brazil! I enjoy your videos a lot. I find them to be quite nice introductions to their subjects. When is the French Revolution: part 4 coming out?
Thanks, Carlos! I actually recorded Part 5 a few weeks ago and skipped over Part 4, but I do need to go back and record Part 4 on the Rights of Man. It's definitely on my list!
CAN YOU PLEASE MAKE A VID "ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE FRENCH REVOLU"TION??
That video would last like two hours! I hope to finish this series at some point but the French Revolution is complex - not for lightweights!
Tom Richey how about the The Latin American Wars for Independence
my guy, your videos are gas asf. you boutta get me this A on my history final. Thank you.
Also it would super awesome to see you do charles V and Spain in the Netherlands :D !
I enjoyed your dancing this video. And the history part was pretty good too!
really old but these videos are totally saving my ass, gonna do great on the test tomorrow, thanks so much for this!
I love how this guy teaches.
Have you uploaded the next instalment? If so where can I find it? I've learning the French Revolution right now and these videos are really helping me to understand the sequence of events, thanks for uploading!
thank you so much for this series!
wow tom, i live in a third world country and if my teachers were as cool and eloquent as you, i would have learned a lot faster. you rock man!
my test is today and i feel kind of confident now all thanks to you and the internet.
ps - not all of the teachers in our country are bad, but some of my teachers are in the sense that they fail to make us understand subjects quickly.
Ayan44 Thanks for the kind words. I hope your test went well!
Tom Richey It did. :)
Your are a top notch expert on AP Euro and AP APUSH !
+Saramd Zubair Thanks! I'm looking forward to producing more videos for both subjects!
Awesome videos, thanks, really useful prep fro A level
These videos are my life line for AP Euro, Thank you! #swwweeerrrrveee
hey tom richey! thanks for making these videos. I am using them to review for the ap test in may. but i have always wondered, what is covered by duct tape on the poster of rules behind you?
HAHAHA I get that question a lot and sometimes contemplate not answering it. The first year I taught at my school, I was in a freshman academy setting. When that was no longer the case, I taped over "academy" rather than make a new set of rules! Haha
Explained well ....thank you
the tennis like game was the "jeu de paume". (paume is the palm of the hand)
one of the best
Thank you so much!
Thank you so much. This is very instructive video
Have you not made the part 4 that you talk about at the end of the video? (The Declaration of the Rights of Man)
I have not. I skipped that one and went ahead and made Part 5 on the Civil Constitution of the Clergy. I plan to complete the series this summer, including Part 4. It'll probably be a 7 or 8 part series by the time it's done.
Great videos!! Studying for my ap test
You've come to the right place!
Any rooms for rent at the ol Bastille? I heard it's now apartments? Like man I can dig maybe a small studio. :)
11:04 What song is this? I find myself going back and rockin' out to this killer tune!
Thank you so much!
Greetings from belgium, super interesting!
Thank you
Oooo I don't even noticed that this video is 7 years old
sorry but july 14 isn't a commeromation for the bastil but for the feast of the federation when the king signe the constitution
Can you do a video on the enlightenment and the enlightened monarchs?
Thanks for uploading! :)
Nice to see some metalhead teachers!
THANKS SIR
"Unca Tommm funny!!" -McIntire
You are wrong about the tennis court oath because the third estate could not wear those „culotte“ they had to have longs pants and it was a death sentence if you wore them.
I certainty won’t forget the tennis court oath now!
***** Thank you so much; these videos really make reviewing a lot less stressful and more coherent. Keep making great videos! :)
I thought its Mirabeau, Abbie sieyes and some 3rd estate general. Prof.
Greetings from Canada
To who ever is doing a last review before the AP Euro test good luck!
I laughed every time you said that Louis XVI made the worst possible decision.
You are wrong ! It is not the weakness of the king that brought the revolution. Louis the XIV , the sun king would have faced the same challenge. The only difference is that it would have been more bloody. You must remember that the assembly had many support from some of the highest and richest nobles and merchants. The national assembly created an army of citizens named the National Guard to fight against any royal army.
Can you make a world war two video/series of videos?
At some point - just needs to be done right. Would rather wait than do it quick and halfway.
what is the link of the youtube video from where you learnt these so well? :p
directory episode soon plz
Dude, your explanations concerning the 14th of july are really not all that good. Actually to storm the bastille was kind of an after thought, the main event that day was the crowd going to the tuileries and took the weapons who were stocked there cause they were thinking that the army you mentioned earlier could attack Paris. Also, you didn't mention a crucial point concerning the start of the revolution : people were starving. Desperate people do desperate things.
yo, about the Davids painting - he was living during the times of revolution, and he was kind of propaganda artist for revolution.
why is this fun.
What a teacher are you...Funny😄😄
actually the american declaration was just a bunch of white boys throwing shade at each other
Lucy Sun what is that supposed to mean?
Those "white boys" are the founding fathers of the greatest superpower to ever exist. Don't understand why it's okay to throw around "white boy" but "black boy" would be construed as racist. Sounds like hypocrisy.
These are such great review, the test is tomorrow and I am going to kill it
Can someone clarify if anything of what he is saying is true ?
I'm currently studying the French Revolution for my studies, I would say this video gives a good general understanding of what occurred during the French Revolution
He’s an actual ap euro professor and our teacher gives us these videos for review so yes
Te amo

Dude, just so you know, your videos are great but there are a few mistakes.
What mistakes?
sreyashi bhose I will take the time to write them IF he’s interested. Otherwise i have things to do; mainly a film on the topic !
Bernamej sorry to bother you but are you talking about the great fear? Is that one of the mistakes?
I mean the reason behind the great fear.
@@sreyashibhose5955 To be honest I would need to watch the video again...I don't recall that particular point.
Getting rid of feudalism is like getting rid of Herobrian in Minecraft
Je veux fêter a l ' Assemblée nationale! C'est tres,tres interressant! lol
afro stud Merci? That is if you said something nice!
haha oui. Je n'ai pas parler mechant.
#stayclassyAmerica
