This is the first part of my lecture series on the French Revolution, providing an introduction to the background and the causes of the chain of events that led to the Revolution.
Before the French Revolution, France operated under the Old (Ancien) Regime in which the people were organized into three Estates: the First (Clergy), the Second (Nobility), and the Third (Everyone Else). The clergy and the nobility had several privileges, including exemption from paying taxes. The extravagant spending of the French monarchy combined with its inability to tax the first two estates created a financial crisis in the late 18th century. France's decision to assist the United States in the American Revolution pushed the French monarchy's finances to the breaking point, prompting King Louis XVI to call an "Assembly of Notables" in 1787 to investigate options for raising more revenue. The Assembly of Notables ended in failure, with the clergy and the nobility refusing to consent to taxation. Louis was left with no choice but to call the Estates General, where I will continue in the second lecture.
This lecture is intended for AP European History and Western Civilization students, but is appropriate for high school audiences and lifelong learners, as well.
Its so helpful to have someone teaching me history whos voice doesnt turn into white noise, unlike my AP euro teacher. Thanks!
LOL Glad I can help!

Middle-aged guy here to learn. Because it's interesting and fun to connect the dots and see how much everything is intertwined. To see how much everything you've ever heard of played a role in shaping the world that we live in today. Thanks!
This series has been super helpful with writing two separate papers for my intro to democracy class! Thanks so much for being a selfless history vlog poster!! Very grateful!
I really like teachers like you who care to educate, I appreciate this
Your videos on the Thirty Years War through the French Revolution have been extremely helpful and fun to watch. Thank you!!
Dude, the 25% went to the military. the public only got 19 %. You mixed up the shades of green in the diagram
+Loubna Ait he already said he knew he messed up
Thank you, this was really useful.
Ps. You were great in The Martian.
Thanks... and THANKS!
Just a wonderful performance
Doing a presentation on the buildup to the French Revolution tomorrow morning and this helped! You provided lots of extra information which I know will impress both my teacher and my classmates if I am able to incorporate them into my presentation. Thank you for making this video, and for being so animated and enthused as opposed to the typical vapid RUclips videos on events such as the French Revolution.
Such kind words! I'm glad I can help you learn and not put you to sleep in the process. :D
I have a HORRIBLE AP European History teacher...thank you for reviving my interest in European history! You're great at what you do sir! :D
Your videos are so helpful! Thanks for all of your dedication! Anyways, I was wondering when you would be putting up the videos for World War I and World War II?
This is great Mr. Richey! Thank you so much for your time, knowledge, and passion.
Rebecca Pisano Glad I could help you! :D
Whoa, just discovered your channel. You are very good at explaining, and you are clearly a passionate teacher. The best kind.

Btw, I am studying french, so please keep the french history coming!
LOVE your videos! I'm involved with a lot of extracurricular activities so these really help me study when I don't have a lot of time! :)
I literally have my finals on this tomorrow and I'm cramming everything in one night
I'm using this to refresh before my CLEP exam, keep them coming Tom!
Thank you so much for these videos! They are incredibly helpful and easy to recall for tests.
Great intro to the French Revolution. Made me feel pretty good about my French Revolution lessons. I think I've got it covered!
Omg Tom, you are such a tea enthusiast, but otherwise splendid video, really aided me in understanding the inception of the FR.
Glad to hear it! :D
These videos are superb, just watching French revolution series, however number four seems to be mission! Keepbup the good work..
Tom you rock. Your videos are fantastic. I was wondering if you were thinking about doing any videos on Inudstrialization/Industrail revolution of europe? My class is studying that now and I need to prepare for the test.
Your videos are great, thanks for all the help!
Awesome! Love this series and looking forward to your future Napoleon series. Was wondering if you plan to go into detail about the Terror and Danton and Robespierre, etc. Maybe part of you future Napoleon. I love Danton's quote (if he really said it) before he died on the guillotine: "My only regret is that I go before that rat, Robespierre!" Later man!
These videos have been helping a lot in my AP Euro class. By the way, what's under the black tape on your rules poster?? My entire class is curious!
matt damon
This will save me. Test is upcoming Thursday, thank you!!
You look like Matt Damon
Mr. Richey! Awesome lessons! I'm definitely retaining historical information. But one thing: What secret message is underneath the tape on your poster behind you? If I don't know, my brain may accidentally turn itself inside out
Excellent job! Thank you for great content!
Thank you so much! It helped me a lot! Excellent job!
You mixed up the Military and the Public Works at 5:00

what does it say under the tap on your poster? My class would really like to know because, we are doing a bet on who knows what is says under the tap
You, Sir... are a rock star.
Way better teacher than my own XD thank you!!
Correct me if im wrong but at 4:55, shouldnt it be 19% going to public works instead of 25%? Because the graph shows the 25% goes to military purposes and it got me confused.
Thank you for making these they really help for my test
thegirlwhogamed You're very welcome. I'm glad to hear that my work is helping you!
That was an amazing explanation .. thanks a lot
You're the BEST! I'm trying to do an essay on how the French influenced Germany in the nineteenth century but I gotta start with the French Rev (according to my own guesses!)

You're quite welcome!
Okay. This video is 3 years old now and I'm just now watching it the night before my Ap euro final exam.... My name is Alise! I'm tripping! Omg like this is so coincidental!
What grade(s) do you teach? The posters behind me are tripping me up, what with their juxtaposition.
9-12
The 6% government expenditures was not just Versailles, but all royal establishments, of which there were many.
the education I deserve all for free! thank you Internet gods
I love the music lol
I am in a reacting to the past history class now, and the character that I am playing is Jean-Sifrein Maury, a clergyman. In second national assembly meeting the people of France fought back against the nobility saying that we are poor and we just want bread and all your doing is stealing from us. The King didn't respond so I went up and proposed for him that the nobles and the church start paying taxes because we are tax exempt at the moment and I believe that it would help the French economy to get out of he hole that we are currently in. I guess nobody in the class knew this so it wasn't an effective argument. The winner gets bonus points so do you have any idea of what I can propose to get the people of france on my side. I am tired of losing these uphill battles, being a conservative is hard work.
I think you mixed up 25% military budget with 18% for public works.
I SEE THE BOURNE IDENTITY IN THE BACKGROUND.... TOM DAMON ?????
i think you mixed up military and public works on the graph. lol. still a great video tho!
Mitch Mitchigan I totally did! I've added an annotation now so that people know that I know that I screwed up. Haha

where's part two?!
you're fab
thx
Nice! Pie chart is a little off though lol
***** I meant the colors are off. 4:35 you said 25% belonged to public works and 19% for the military. Anyway, nice lecture!
thank you for explain the next revolution good job merci mon ami sorry for my englich
Which is incorrect, the chart or what you said?
+Maddie Kate It's been so long now... I would probably go with what's on the slide, but then again, we're getting into matters of minutiae at that point. I wish it were possible to edit RUclips videos but once they're posted, there's not much that can be done.
It's okay!
& watch me still fail this exam after watching this 50 times.
me too
Before the revolution nobles who had tenants were allowed levy a tax on them called the "cens", and could force them to work for free (known as the "corvée"). The peasants had to pay the lord for using his mill. There were still some serfs (400,000 in the 1770s) but even if you werent a serf you had to do that stuff. If you were a serf the lord had a veto on your marriages. There were also seigneurial courts for the lords manor. While it is sometimes said the nobles didnt pay any tax, they paid a little bit. If they owned non-noble lands they had to pay the "taille" (land tax) on it.
revenge is truly a double edged sword
you got 2 mixed up
I thank you so much for this video it helped me survive the exam that i did my teacher talks so fast that she could read a 600 page book in 2 min
😂😂💀
Isn’t 19% of the budget going into public work?
PHAHAHAH U MAKE HISTORY FUNNY HAHAH ENJOYED THIS XX
Don't think I can concentrate with you as my history teacher.
I was taught that the nobles were the first followed by the clergy and not the other way around. Or was I not paying attention in class 😱...I've got an exam on this soon
Sammie Al you weren't paying attention lol

+Angie Ortega Yeah, I screwed something up on that one. The mistake has plagued me for years! lol
you're really cute ;)
thanks for the vid, I was taking notes the entire time!
james riley Cope Thank you on all counts! I hope to add to this lecture series this winter.
Tom Richey But wasn't King Louis a more Liberal King than his predecessors Louis XIV and XV
Thebarnardfactor Well, it would be difficult NOT to be more liberal than Louis XIV, but I wouldn't put Louis XVI among the enlightened absolutists or anything like that.
Tom Richey But he started several enlightened ideas such as abolishing the forced labor which was prevalent in the ages of Louis XIV. As well he was the one of the first monarch in France and Europe for that matter to start a bread welfare if you like. But anyways I love your videos they have helped me for Ap Euro, but I wish I could find a good historian/history professor who would do a video explaining the life at versailles
Thebarnardfactor From my understanding, the abolition of forced labor was more of a result of the National Assembly than anything Louis XVI did directly. And I'm not sure that bread welfare is "liberal" in the sense of the time but more of a pragmatic measure to keep people from trying to overthrow the government. I'm glad my videos have helped you in AP Euro! This all started when I posted a few review sessions online and then it kind of caught on. It's people like you who have helped my channel come as far as it has.
Tom Richey The reason I have said all this is because history seems to be unfair to King Louis when we was actually trying to help his people. But it seems that history idolizes King Louis XIV but he was more like a tyranical dictator enforcing the people of France to build massive buildings, not to mention the horrible famines at the end of his reign caused by the debt of his wars. Most likely ( speaking as someone who is originally from france and descedent from nobility) this is why the people of France have started to refer to King Louis XVI as "The Martyr" for his sacrifices to save the people
Thebarnardfactor Now, for the sake of argument, could your descent from French nobility prejudice your view of Louis XIV? He put France in a lot of debt and his wars cost many lives, but without him, would France ever have achieved the greatness it achieved at that time? Voltaire was a huge Louis XIV fan... that's enough for me. I enjoy dialogue with someone who knows their stuff!
