The French Revolution (Part I: The Old Regime)

    This is the first part of my lecture series on the French Revolution, providing an introduction to the background and the causes of the chain of events that led to the Revolution.
    Before the French Revolution, France operated under the Old (Ancien) Regime in which the people were organized into three Estates: the First (Clergy), the Second (Nobility), and the Third (Everyone Else). The clergy and the nobility had several privileges, including exemption from paying taxes. The extravagant spending of the French monarchy combined with its inability to tax the first two estates created a financial crisis in the late 18th century. France's decision to assist the United States in the American Revolution pushed the French monarchy's finances to the breaking point, prompting King Louis XVI to call an "Assembly of Notables" in 1787 to investigate options for raising more revenue. The Assembly of Notables ended in failure, with the clergy and the nobility refusing to consent to taxation. Louis was left with no choice but to call the Estates General, where I will continue in the second lecture.
    This lecture is intended for AP European History and Western Civilization students, but is appropriate for high school audiences and lifelong learners, as well.

    Doing a presentation on the buildup to the French Revolution tomorrow morning and this helped! You provided lots of extra information which I know will impress both my teacher and my classmates if I am able to incorporate them into my presentation. Thank you for making this video, and for being so animated and enthused as opposed to the typical vapid RUclips videos on events such as the French Revolution.

    I am in a reacting to the past history class now, and the character that I am playing is Jean-Sifrein Maury, a clergyman. In second national assembly meeting the people of France fought back against the nobility saying that we are poor and we just want bread and all your doing is stealing from us. The King didn't respond so I went up and proposed for him that the nobles and the church start paying taxes because we are tax exempt at the moment and I believe that it would help the French economy to get out of he hole that we are currently in. I guess nobody in the class knew this so it wasn't an effective argument. The winner gets bonus points so do you have any idea of what I can propose to get the people of france on my side. I am tired of losing these uphill battles, being a conservative is hard work.

    Before the revolution nobles who had tenants were allowed levy a tax on them called the "cens", and could force them to work for free (known as the "corvée"). The peasants had to pay the lord for using his mill. There were still some serfs (400,000 in the 1770s) but even if you werent a serf you had to do that stuff. If you were a serf the lord had a veto on your marriages. There were also seigneurial courts for the lords manor. While it is sometimes said the nobles didnt pay any tax, they paid a little bit. If they owned non-noble lands they had to pay the "taille" (land tax) on it.

    Tom Richey But wasn't King Louis a more Liberal King than his predecessors Louis XIV and XV

    • @tomrichey
      @tomrichey  10 лет назад

      Thebarnardfactor Well, it would be difficult NOT to be more liberal than Louis XIV, but I wouldn't put Louis XVI among the enlightened absolutists or anything like that.

    • @Thebarnardfactor
      @Thebarnardfactor 10 лет назад

      Tom Richey But he started several enlightened ideas such as abolishing the forced labor which was prevalent in the ages of Louis XIV. As well he was the one of the first monarch in France and Europe for that matter to start a bread welfare if you like. But anyways I love your videos they have helped me for Ap Euro, but I wish I could find a good historian/history professor who would do a video explaining the life at versailles

    • @tomrichey
      @tomrichey  10 лет назад

      Thebarnardfactor From my understanding, the abolition of forced labor was more of a result of the National Assembly than anything Louis XVI did directly. And I'm not sure that bread welfare is "liberal" in the sense of the time but more of a pragmatic measure to keep people from trying to overthrow the government. I'm glad my videos have helped you in AP Euro! This all started when I posted a few review sessions online and then it kind of caught on. It's people like you who have helped my channel come as far as it has.

    • @Thebarnardfactor
      @Thebarnardfactor 10 лет назад

      Tom Richey The reason I have said all this is because history seems to be unfair to King Louis when we was actually trying to help his people. But it seems that history idolizes King Louis XIV but he was more like a tyranical dictator enforcing the people of France to build massive buildings, not to mention the horrible famines at the end of his reign caused by the debt of his wars. Most likely ( speaking as someone who is originally from france and descedent from nobility) this is why the people of France have started to refer to King Louis XVI as "The Martyr" for his sacrifices to save the people

    • @tomrichey
      @tomrichey  10 лет назад

      Thebarnardfactor Now, for the sake of argument, could your descent from French nobility prejudice your view of Louis XIV? He put France in a lot of debt and his wars cost many lives, but without him, would France ever have achieved the greatness it achieved at that time? Voltaire was a huge Louis XIV fan... that's enough for me. I enjoy dialogue with someone who knows their stuff!
