When the Protestant Reformation began, Henry VIII opposed Martin Luther and sided with the Catholic Church. This changed when his first wife, Catherine of Aragon, did not provide him with a live son to inherit his kingdom. Henry VIII asked the Pope for an annulment (since the Catholic Church does not recognize divorce, per se) and decided to leave the Catholic Church when his request was rejected. Parliament passed the Act of Supremacy in 1534, which declared Henry to be the "Supreme Head" of the Church of England.
As Supreme Head of the Church of England, Henry dissolved the monasteries and sold Church lands to generate revenue. He also divorced Catherine and married Ann Boleyn. As far as doctrine, however, Henry did very little, making his Reformation the most conservative of the Reformation movements.
I will be posting Part 2 of this lecture soon, in which I will address the progress of the Reformation during reigns of Henry's children.

Lol
Lord Birdwood a rash decision made for selfish reasons? Accurate
calm down
@Опанак У Свемиру why should we go back to Satanic CATHOLICISM?
If not Henry VIII , it would have happened later... The British Empire was coming & it lasted for 200 years ; there was no way Rome was going to maintain "political leverage" over such a global power.

Henry the 8th: ”Aight imma head Out ”
Thank you so much!! I used this and part 2 to help me significantly on understanding for my 5 page essay on King Henry VIII and my presentation. I wouldn't have been able to do it without you and I really enjoyed your commentary and your humor.
+4YouUglies Glad I could help! Best of luck on your presentation.
This is the most useful video on Henry VIII I've ever seen. And I've seen a few. Just the right level of details!
Thank you so much Tom Richey! Out of all my years of high school I finally have someone who is explaining hiatorical characters so well. I am really enjoying your videos. They make history come alive!
Thanks for the kind words! :D
Glad to hear my videos are helping you.
Very well produced and very informative indeed, thank you!
It was only Under Elizabeth I that Englo became fully Protestant. Henry VIII's new "church" was basically Catholicism without recognition of the Pope as leader
* England
Less paedos as well.
It's a shame that it didn't go the way of secularism, we'd be in a much better position by now if it had.
that right
Oh my gosh you broke this topic down so well thank you so much! It makes so much more sense now! :)
Thank you so much for this video. I have sat in my humanities class during the English Reformation lectures for the past 3 weeks not understanding the order and cause of things. Now I have a much better idea of what's going on.
Glad to hear it! Hopefully, I'll be able to continue to help you as you progress through the rest of the course.
+Tom Richey you already have. Subbed :)
Love your videos, This one is helping me with my dissertation and I am loving it! You make History come alive!
God bless u tom richey. U are the reason Im passing my AP Euro exam
After learning this lesson in class, this video helped me further comprehend what occurred during the English Reformation specifically the many figures who played into this event. Henry VII had a lot of wives and this video explained each of his relationships very clearly! Also, I was able to further understand what led Henry VII to go against the rules of the Church of England.
Thanks so much you are much more helpful than my teacher or textbook!
I ended up here because of my literature studies, and i loved your rock intro
Awesome video! Just came across your channel. I'm a huge Tudor geek! Thanks for being accurate!
Ap test may 6, watching these every day hope they help
Thanks Tom, this has helped me with my work :) On a side point I was smiling when I realised you sound like Loyd Grossman.
Not familiar with him... Sounds like I need to check him out. Glad my videos are helping you!
A refreshing change to the usual utube videos!
Thank you very much for helping me understand the English reformation! You explain it so well! I'm French and I'm doing English studies, unfortunately it covers so many subjects that we don't have enough time to ask for more information. I'm really interested in the big religious shifts between catholicism and protestantism in the United Kingdom, the role of Henry VIII, the Stuarts, and also the birth of puritanism. I'm going to devour your channel.
thank you !!! you just saved me i have an exam tomorrow and since i missed the last corse i had no idea what it was about so really thank you
These videos helped me greatly for my paper. Since I used some of your material, I was wondering if I could cite you in my references. If so, could you be so kind to let me know how to do it properly. Thank you!
Excellent discussion. Very helpful.
Thank you this helped me on my final so much
This is such a good video, I would love to use this as a source in my essay but unfortunately I cannot use videos. Do you have an essays that you have written? Or perhaps notes of the sources you used? I really want to further investigate the idea of how his motives were not religious (since my essay is aimed to suggest that Henry VIII was Catholic despite everything).
Thank you in advance!
that sip of the drink was the best part of the vid
Very interesting video!
Do you have any more videos on the tudors ? This was really helpful
Thank you! I think it will help me a lot for my English presentation :)
Hey, what is the name of the song you used for your intro? Love your videos by the way, keep it up!!
That's a pretty fierce (American) accent, Mr Richey. Dare I ask where it hails from? Excellent summary
you explain this so well!! thank you so much 💖
Finally I get the context of where the landed gentry fits in, thanks!
One of my favorite topics, ever.
Randy King I hope I didn't disappoint! I expect to be uploading the second part on Edward, Mary, and Elizabeth tomorrow.

Good stuff right here!
Thanks! Also, because of COVID19 we are doing this online. And one of the questions were about Martin Luther and they saw someone wrote about Martin Luther King 💀💀
Its the illegal measures that cause it not claims of a virus backed by zero science

Love the friends reference. Please tell me it was intentional...
I am just going to ride along and listen in on this one Mr. Richey- I was being bad in school during these studies and I don't have anything. Figure I would be better served paying attention this time around.
Much obliged for the learn on.
***** You nearly disappoint me! It cracked me up how you were able to rile everyone up on my Calvinism video! LOL
Tom Richey
unfortunately religious people tend to not be willing to refrain from special pleading- I will not entertain intellectual dishonesty.
Very comprehensive! Cheers :)
Information is great, but the music in-between lecture points could be more subtle and not as hardcore
You may have been asked this question before, but who is the band that play in between (it is not I am less interested in your lectures)?
Your explanation was so clear sir.. thanks for this vedio..
REALLY REALLY HELPFUL :D TNX SO MUCH !!

Critically examine the main features of the English Reformation and consider its consequences. Can anyone answer
'He did everything he could, right?' thanks, that was hilarious!
Great video from a great guy
Reformation stems from a quest for change. RC & C of E learn from each other. Pray together. Mr. Tom Richey is superb a teacher.
Thank you sir for good explanation
Damn that intro music hit me hard
Thank you, helped a lot! :)
Yo you really helped I had an exam and thank you I learned a lot I'm not really a good listener in class I normally draw in my book but Ye thanks
Why didn't i find this guy earlier? I would have had fun learning about english in school. Why am I just discovering him one day before my first exam bruhhh
good job why no new videos
The English Reformation didn't start with King Henry VIII in 1532, it started much earlier with Oxford Theologian John Wycliffe 1320-1384, known as: The Morning Star of the Reformation'. Wyclife called the Pope, 'The Antichrist', and in 1380 he translated the bible into English for the first time. The Pope was furious at this defiance and demanded Wycliffes excommunication. Wycliffes followers were know as Llollards, and in 1395 presented his 12 conclusions to Parliament and nailed them to the door of Westminster abbey and St Paul's cathedral. When Wycliffe died, the Pope ordered that his body was dug up and his skeleton smashed into pieces and scattered in the river. However, many Royals had copies of Wycliffes bible, including King Richard the III and even Anne Boleyn who brought it to the attention of Henry VIII. Henry was particularly impressed by Wycliffes assertion that a King was ordained by God, not the Pope and therefore was above the jurisdiction of any Pope, the antichrist ! So Henry replaced the Pope as the head of the English church with himself. This was of course a convenient move for Henry, allowing him the power to decree his former marriage as void, allowing him to marry Anne Boleyn.
Thanks for the help!!!!!!! Just curious though, where are you from? Because you definetly have an accent.
It should be apparent that I'm from the American South! Haha
Is the Spanish religious turmoil the same one?
There is a series on this called 'The Tudors' 👍
what a professionel teacher is that :)
Did the Pope refuse an annulment? I think he prevaricated and Henry eventually lost patience.
Good stuff
Thank you 🙏🏻
How did that get there?
Helpful
Yes that's correct, I regularly frequent an Anglican Church Of England Church in England and we recite The Nicene Creed every week 'we are part of one Catholic and Apostolic Church', we also have a huge Crucifix with Jesus on it inside the Church and we also have Iconic art work,Catholic/Orthodox style, all a far cry from a Protestant Church, such as Methodist and Wesleyan.
Henry VIII had a lot of bad luck with his wives. Henry really just did what he wanted all the time and really didnt care what anyone says. -Bland
I thought it was her wifes that had bad luck with him as a husband.
Music is soooo loud at end
I am a Tudor junkie. Thanks, this helped my church history paper immensely!
Are you from the United States?
@@andej1238 duh tf
Please can someone tell me what is the act of supremacy
He was still an Anglo catholic,he even turned the clock back in 1540 by having his parliament pass the act of six articles which was back to square one except that he was the head of the church and not the pope.
Helping me for my exam in two weeks
My Euro teacher says Luther said only two sacraments were valid, and my textbook agreed with that.
He at first aknowledged repentance (confession) as a sacrament or a quasi-sacrament.
Thank you
Love this ting
thank u so much . hope that i will have a A on my exam
Did you?
why on earth would anyone being made aware of the origins of this church choose to stay in it. its cursed from jump street.
I sat in my class and the professor taught me about the Tudors and the Reformation. The taught that I had in my mind was "screw this" BUT this video is ROCK - It's a savior. Thank you very much for this.
nerd
I want to know why Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley and Thomas Cranmer supported the annulment of King Henry and catherine of Aragon.?
Why Cranmer wrote a theological defence in favour of the king's divorce?
They are called oxford Martyrs and an epitome of english reformation etc etc...
But why they did with a lady who already lost his husband Arthur, and just because of giving birth a baby girl, they supported the king...
I just want to know from past 1 week...why? Why? Why?

Who is the pope??
dude, the king is my favorite protestant, lol
I’ve been confused about why Anne Askew was executed for heresy when she was a Protestant. I think I understand now, thank you!
monastaries?
Henry the VIII,Martin Luther, Calvin and Hitler surely share the same level of hell.
Like seriously.. For a marriage this king changed the history of the whole world😐😐.
funny and educational thanks
whos here from ep
Hlo Sir, I'm from India. I'm BA eng 1st year student . I wanna knw abt Reformation in Engaland. But, I can't catch ur talk immediately. So, could uh plz gimme the sub titles in ur vdo???? Waiting for ur reply...
That music lol
I wouldn't call Calvin a Radical Reformer. That term is generally used for the Anabaptist-types. Calvin is a Magisterial Reformer (I say this as an Anglican, not as a Calvinist). As well, it is important to note that all of the Magisterial Reformers would have balked at the idea that they were leaving the Catholic Church or were not Catholic; on the contrary, from Henry VIII to Martin Luther to Martin Bucer to John Calvin to even Ulrich Zwingli, they all saw themselves as Catholics making an internal reform of the Church. This is why they all maintained in the Creeds the Catholic Nature of the Church.
Thank you for the excellent video! :)
I am not a native speaker i could understand everything!
