This is the second part of my lecture on the English Reformation. Access Part I here: • The English Reformatio...
Henry VIII was succeeded by his son, Edward VI, who supported the development of a distinctly Protestant Church of England. During Edward's reign, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer wrote the Book of Common Prayer and scrapped the practice of clerical celibacy. After Edward's death, Mary I ("Bloody Mary") attempted to return England to Catholicism but died before she could cement her counter-reformation. It was during the long reign of Elizabeth I that Protestantism was firmly established, though not without difficulty. Philip II of Spain attempted to invade England, but his Spanish Armada was defeated by a more maneuverable English fleet and by the weather.
By the end of Elizabeth's reign, England was an established Protestant country and an established naval power in Europe.
we need more history teachers like you
Richard Tam My own students would probably disagree with you, but thanks! :D
Tom Richey it is hard to engage young person (myself included ;)) to learn history. It seems like a study of "dead things", but once we found the connections, it get really interesting. Learn from the past, live from the past as a witness of the human history. "Those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it" am i right.
The textbook we use is so difficult to comb through to find the most relevant information, but somehow in 11 minutes, you explain everything with detail, in a simple and clear manner. I watch any of your videos relevant to the chapter before tests and it SAVES MY LIFE. Thank you so much for making these. I really appreciate it!
RIP headphone users 4:18

+frozenbagel16 I wasn't even wearing headphones and that scared the bejesus out of me!

I read a biography on Elizabeth and it had a section for Mary the whole mirror myth was when she was sick she had become physically "unattractive" to say the least and forbid any mirrors near her and once she died and the cloths were removed from the mirrors some of the workers cited that they could see her face blistered and gory
Tom, thank you so much for the wonderful content you provide. I am a university student studying the English Reformation and your videos make the content so clear, structured but most of all enjoyable.
WE NEED MOR HISTORY TEACHERS LIKE YOU.YOU ARE GOOD(I,AM A SPANISH PEOPLE,BUT I UNDERSTAND YOU)
Dear Tom, Thank you for your wonderful and dedicated work. Even I could learn a lot from you. Prior listening to you, I used to think that just Ottomans and Safavid, Tatars, Mongols, Turks, Arabs,... were cruel and bloody. Now, thank to you that I see our other Bodies of fellow human have had their own fair share of cruelty and blood thirstiness. May knowledge brings everybody's hearts closer to each other. Peace and Love.
+Naghi Astnei For sure, the West has shed its share of blood. It's an honor to be able to educate people all over the world!

Our local Presbyterian Church wanted to learn more about the Protestant influence on the Church of England sparked by the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Your presentation was wonderful in me helping to prepare this particular study we were encountering and made it far more interesting for all of us. Thank you. Certainly better than any understanding I had of it from Church History I had 40 years ago in seminary!
What can i say, you saved my life man ! i have a presentation on that topic tomorrow and thanks to your video it's all clear and easy thank you so much !!! Plz keep posting these they're very helpful and even entertaining cuz now i actually like that period and its events . thx again ^^
Great video, Tom, and the fact that i see The Silmarillion there makes it even more awesome!
This is so helpful and wonderfully put together - thank you!
Great lecture, *****! It is hard to pick the most riveting moment in part II; the second cousin back story, the Thomas Cranmer/"My unworthy right hand" story or the John Knox treatise.
Matt Damon,
Thank you so much! Your videos are such a great way to study for the ap euro test coming up! You save my life.
I know this story so well, but you filled in quite a few blanks in my knowledge.... Excellent.
Thanks for a very good lecture. Mr. Richey has an enthusiasm for the topic. Refreshing!
My pleasure!
This was a great supplement/recap to what I am covering with my home schooled 3rd grader. Thank you!

As a Church of England devotee This was very interesting to know history of the Church. 😊
Dude! Awesomely informational videos. Who are you? Exactly the information I was looking for.
Hi I started watching your channel about two months ago, I think you do an outstanding job of teaching. I've been watching your videos and think I wish you were my teacher as I child! Anyway keep up the good work!
novicalriptide That's awesome! So often, people develop an appreciation and an interest in history AFTER they graduate. The nice thing about RUclips is that now, it's never too late to learn history.
thank u so much. it's so clear! i'm a french students, and i understand more what you saying than my teachers thank u. very helpful 👍
I JUMPED AT THE SCREAM SO MUCH ADRENALINE IS PULSING THROUGH ME
Thank you for making these videos!
Jeremiah T Right back at you! If nobody watched these videos, me making them would be kind of pointless.
thabkyou this information is helping me with my asiignment about the reformation and reing of elizibeth reign.
Hi, actually one of my teacher who teaches about the Tudors and the Stuarts told us that the Spanish Armada got mainly defeated by the weather and that the British then thought about improving there navy power
Fantastic video, explained everything I needed.
naval power shifted away from Spain, but British naval dominance is really only established after the Glorious revolution ( 1688 ) when they reform their political and financial system. Until that time their navy, although formidable, is frankly to expensive for them to keep at sea. But overall very correct and enjoyable to watch
Love that you have star belly sneetches on your bookshelf. I use this as an analogy for we are more alike than different.
AP Exam in 8 days...gotta cram. Thanks for your videos! When I get a 3, you'll be a major reason to why!!
I have a history exam tomorrow on Henry and that was just what I needed.

Thanks Matt
You are a life saver.
This is so helpful for my exam next week. Absorbed so much.
I watched both of your videos and it's very informative and thanks for the knowledge. I'm a Catholic from India, and we believe British brought the Catholicism to India as part of their colonisation. But as per your second part England is reformed as Protestant church and I wonder how we converted to Catholic.
Very good!
Thank You.
very good

Dude, I have a first edition of the Silmarillion too. Rad.
If I had a time machine i'd love to meet queen Elizabeth.

Obliged for the learn on- paying attention over here.
***** Always honored to teach you something, my friend!
An up to date expression of world history. . . I can dig it. Easier listening to this guy than my "made a deal with the devil" world history teacher.
4:18 you scared me with your sream :') anyway thank you so much for your video, i better understand my history course now
One question, was Supreme Governor an official title given by the parliament or was it something they called her behind her back?
The Oath of Supremacy, imposed by the Act of Supremacy 1558 (ie an Act of Parliament), provided for any person taking public or church office in England to swear allegiance to the monarch as "Supreme Governor of the Church of England".
GOOD VIDEO
Amazing videos. New subscriber. The only thing I wish changed was the background music. Ughhh
Thanks for your subscription! If the background music is your only complaint, I’ll consider that a win!
Hey Tom Richey. Can you make a video or a series of videos on the Tudors, English Civil War, Restoration, etc.
loved both videos, very informative thank you
I just have a question, are protestantism and anglicanism the same religion?
That #winning picture is iconic
Good video, I like your teaching style. Its better than crashcourse, because that guy comes off as a glib know it all, and you don't. Cheers.
This video helped me so much!! I was so interested to hear about "bloody mary." I couldn't believe that she killed all of those protestants and restored Catholicism. Thomas Cranmer is awesome too. He totally went behind Mary's back and gave a speech against her, and her beliefs.
Thank youuuuuuuuu
Very informative somewhat understand the Anglican(England)Church came from and why it is close to Catholic. But the history is somewhat confusing trying to connect the dots.
I was searching for knowledge about which cathedrals in England were built during the Roman Catholic period when I came across your brief history . I suspect many of those cathedrals were partially financed by the Pope. I'm interested in knowing which famous English Protestant cathedrals today were built by the Catholics and Rome. Was any compensation paid to Rome?
Are you going to do the Henry 8th wives video
I'm not sure about the supreme governor title thing! U said that that was because they were sexists at that time, but I think that it was her own choice to get the title of Supreme Governor as she was afraid that her Catholic subjects would become angry with her. I wish u were my teacher tho! You made lots of stuff clearer to me. Thanks a lot :)
This takes me back to all girls primary school in good ole Buckinghamshire.
!really good video ! but you scared me with that scream
omg me too i literally jumped
im doing a presentation, could you help me get started how would you answer this question
mary's efforts were in vain: the english nation was irreverisbly moving in a protestant direction
that was awesome. but that scream was scary. "you unworthy right hand!"
