  • Henry VIII is known for being a rather notorious King of England who had 6 wives, however his reign brought a huge degree of change to England. When he split from the Catholic Church, he declared himself the 'Supreme Head of the Church,' and forced those within his realm to accept him as this. However at the time the infamous Tudor monarch was rather poor and he needed a source of income to fund his expensive military campaigns across Europe.
Henry looked towards the hundreds of monastic buildings, friaries, abbeys and priories across England and saw the wealth that they had accumulated. Some of these monastic orders had large amounts of land and money, and Henry looked to seize this. He placed Thomas Cromwell in charge who sent out a number of investigators searching for reasons to shut down these religious houses. This was known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
Cromwell shut down hundreds of buildings, took the wealth of all of these and transferred it into the treasury making the King incredibly rich. He also ordered that a number of buildings be destroyed, libraries ruined and also made thousands of staff, monks and nuns homeless and with their way of life in tatters. For a number of people who resented this and stood up to the King, they were also executed including the Abbot of Glastonbury Abbey, Richard Whiting who was hung, drawn and quartered. His head was then displayed above his own abbey.
The Dissolutions of the Monasteries were an incredibly brutal and powerful sign of Henry VIII's power, and they changed the face of English History forever. So join us today as we look at 'Henry VIII's Brutal Dissolution Of The Monasteries.'

I'm related to St. John Stone, an Augustinian friar executed by Henry. The Stones immigrated to America so that they could freely practice their faith in Maryland, a Catholic colony, but Protestants took advantage of the colony's freedom of religion to move there and once they were a majority, passed laws making the practice of Catholicism illegal, so the family moved to Canada. They returned after the Civil War.

What a load of bigoted cobblers, Henry should have had an annulment - no divorce was contemplated uor possible. The reason he did not was because Catherine of Aragon was the aunt of Charles V , Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain, and no mere bishop of Rome would have thwarted by him. The dissolution of the Jones tries freed up the capital to convert England into a major commercial power. And a good deal of the monastic wealth was built on corruption.

Henry was tyrant and would do anything to to gain more wealth and power and anyone who stands in his way they would lose their head .

I don't know if you know about kids but take it from me that's no mean feat! So again thankyou.
Oh Daisy says to say hi! Lol ( she reads well too.....& apparently covertly whilst peeping from under a blanket lol!).
Oh one other thing mate, I never knew this was a thing but I recently stumbled upon a whole debate about who was Shakespeare?! Well, it wasn't really my deal to be fair ( I was way more interested in football, motorbikes and girls at school) but I'm definitely coming down on the oxfordian side of this debate. Honestly I just don't see it being old Stratford Shaksper. I don't know if you've ever heard of this either but you may find it interesting. I certainly have done. ( My mrs is starting to worry about me I think lol!). Definitely Edward De Vere using Shake-speare as nom de plume imo. Anyway ive binge watched the heck out of the subject lately, Alexander Waugh and Mark Rylands, Derek Jacobi and......a Canadian dude that's really funny in his presentation but his name escapes me now...Kier someone. I'm sure you don't have as much spare time as I do- still job hunting thanks to covid but Idk, check it out mate if you get a free hour.

i If the English Parliament had'nt been so obsequious and supine in the face of Henry's tyranny it would have pointed out that he was merely being opportunistic when it came to revenue raising. In the long run the move cost the the taxpayer more by removing the monastic " outdoor relief" which was the safety net for the large number of destitute. With this gone -and thousands facing starvation- there was no choice but to introduce the system of Poor Law relief funded, of course, by the taxpayer.

Many were hired, fed, schooled (must have really hurt women), taught trades and were hospialized, kids left re: orphanage, etc.. If big ones hired farm hands outside of those that worked their own, did they sell it to landowners or give those tending it some or the position to work with new owners? I know when they started the Poor Laws, but what happened inbetween? For the greedy ones, oh well; But for the pious that served all their lives, were called to this, to be turned out... to do what? Some got pensions but what would a former nun do during those days? They couldn't practice their religion, what did they wear, where did all of them end up working, what fields? Had the King or other non catholic or seculars built hospitals, orphanages, plenty of schools to replace these before this happened? What happened to the few books that weren't burned from precious libraries, many labored on forever by monks. Just the Aristotle, non catholic subjects or just happenstance? Were book dealers a come up after this period?

Many of the accusations of corrupt monastics were groundless and highly exaggerated by Protestant revolutionaries and reformist upstarts, yet these claims still persist to this day.
