This channel saved my bacon, I have to write an essay by friday on the growth of Calvinism in the second half of the 16th century so this and your John Calvin video have been very helpful as general overviews. Thanks for taking the time to make them!
Tom! A thank you AND a tip for your future classes. My 1st semester exam is this week and your videos are AMAZING. This is only my teachers second year teaching European History, so he isn't as fluent as some. You can definitely explain things with greater depth than he. I'm forever indebted to your youtube channel and yourself. Also "Valois" is pronounced "Val-waa"
Im French, its very cool to heard an american guy who speak about our religious history ! French huguenots and calvinists were very influent in France and gave to us some liberty rights and they gave a lot to a part of american protestantism but sometimes, they were not admitted because badly, some of them in france becames violents with a spirit of revenge ... and some catholics too. We can notify that, our huguenots are like the puritans for the brittish.
Your videos are so helpful!!! Thank you so much! I have an exam on my AP class tomorrow and this helped me understand!!!! THANK YOU and keep on the great work!
I learned just today that my ancestors were Huguenots, very interesting , while they were in France their last name was pulan and coming to America they changed it to pullen,
I am a Protestant but not Calvinist nor Lutheran, I'm simply a Protestant though I adapted the radical attitude of a Calvinist and admired Luther's reforms and adapted some of his ideas and both inspired me in terms of nationalism against Catholicism. Lutherans also inspired me that I am loyal to Protestantism and keep on fighting the corrupt doctrines of the Catholic Church.
I was looking for film footage of the war of religion and your video was the first to come up. Dude your video are really well rated :). PS: it is not pronounced valoy but valwah
Hi guys, I am French and not long ago I've resumed my studies (actually starting a bachelor's degree in English language though I'm 34, everybody should be able to retrain) Tom, I really appreciate your lectures so I wanted to thank you. Thank you for this information. This is in fact my personal history. My forefathers were French Hugenotes that came to South Africa in 1688 because of catholic persecution. We still spell it Hugenotes and we still believe in God as the Supreme Super Natural Being. God Is Everything.
*Katherine de Medici & Henry II actually had 4 surviving sons with 3 becoming kings of France... Also their ruling house was pronounced Val- wah (spelled Valois but pronounced Val- wah)...
There is more to it. Given what a very small minority of different Protestants had done in England, Scotland, Geneva, Low Countries and Germany and the intrigues caused by them in France this uprising is understandable. The killing of innocent Catholic friars, monks, clergy and laity had caused real panic and anxiety. The anthropological truth is about unity and hegemony. Divisions cause conflict. The French majority decided to act to remove that threat. Expulsion would have been preferable.
Thank you so much! These reviews are very helpful. Especially since I'm taking AP Exams this year for history in (Euro, Art, & U.S.) You are very funny as well, hehe.
The War of three Henrys is so funny and interesting xD (It's not mentioned much in this video, but I suggest you look up Henry Duke of Guise because he looks a lot like phineas from phineas and ferb)
Homeschooler here...subscribing! Your videos are great supplements to what my boys are learning in history. I'm sure your students appreciate such a charismatic teacher! Your French pronunciations, however...are not so good. ;-) Haha! Thanks for making these.
Thanks for the video! Extremely helpful for an upcoming French literature exam, unfortunately pronunciation and spelling is an important factor in my case :( .
France's reaction seemed geopolitical. England was for Protestantism and Spain is more Roman Catholic. Therefore France is somewhere in between where they claim to be Roman Catholic but not allowing the Papacy to get involved in French affairs.
Cardinal Richilieu, (du Plessis) is a protestant French surname, out and out. After the 100,000 were killed, the people on the ground disarmed everyone.
i spent more time paying attention to whether or not he was going to drink from his nearly empty beer but of tea than i was the actual historical content.
I am French and I did comprehend quite a few things with your video! Thanks a lot! And ... btw.... Your pronunciation skills are pretty good! ;) (apart from Valois [Val -wha] ) But Diderot just told me he's not mad at you ;)
This conflict might of been bloodier and worse than the French Revolution! Conflicts based upon religion, culture or racial identity are always way worse than government ideology.
So I understand that St. bartholemew's day massacre was catholics killing protestants, but what prompted such a large scale massacre? And was it officials killing or peasants killing?
They were killed because Jon Calvin allowed finance, which allowed the US. Calvin rejected this notion. 50,000 left to England. This was the end of France and the start of England. The Hugenote (Huisgenote/ house friends). They were friends of the Jews.
Irish Setter No they aren't England. America broke away. France has more to due with the United States development than the UK. France has more Aircraft Carriers, a larger Air Force, more tanks than Canada, Australia, NZ, England Sorry you are wrong Source:www.globalfirepower.com/
You are right in your analysis but this directly led to the climate for the Revolution later by allowing the conditions for Louis XIV to centralize his power and justify his divine right.

Indeed. Thanks for engaging, my friend!
so happy I found your channel. Awesome summary.

My teacher always gets side tracks when he lectures so thank you for these videos!
I kind of side track when I lecture in class, too! lol

Your videos are really helpful, thank u for giving ur time to make them
SO GLAD I CAN HELP YOU! :D Thank you for taking the time to watch, like, and comment. I'm guessing you're preparing for the AP Euro exam?
Ya I m. But I m really nervous
Hopefully, I'll be able to help with that over the next two weeks. LET'S DO THIS!
Yaa I can't wait to get it over with
Thank you so much for these, my class pretty much lives by your videos for review.
"An age before we had figured out how to get along with eachother"
That is something that still has yet to be discovered, now more than ever.
I was thinking the same thing lol
I learned just today that my ancestors were Huguenots, very interesting , while they were in France their last name was pulan and coming to America they changed it to pullen,
I really like your video, but I feel compelled to correct your pronunciation:
Huguenots= Hugh-guh-no
Valois= Val-wah
+Margaret Ashton My teacher made a pun about the Huguenots: "Huguenots? Hugu-yes!"
its pronounces both ways btw
anal much?
Not how things work in the south
Margaret Ashton , yep your correct
I am a Protestant but not Calvinist nor Lutheran, I'm simply a Protestant though I adapted the radical attitude of a Calvinist and admired Luther's reforms and adapted some of his ideas and both inspired me in terms of nationalism against Catholicism. Frenny Sala
Protestants did awful things also .. and if europe remained catholic that would be better
Thank you so much for these videos! I watch your reviews every time i have a test in AP Euro and it helps so much!
I was looking for film footage of the war of religion and your video was the first to come up. Dude your video are really well rated :).
PS: it is not pronounced valoy but valwah
+Ahnzel Fanel Yeah my French sucks. lol
Tom Richey
Nobody is perfect ;)
Hi guys,
I am French and not long ago I've resumed my studies (actually starting a bachelor's degree in English language though I'm 34, everybody should be able to retrain)
Tom, I really appreciate your lectures so I wanted to thank you.
Regarding the French Wars of Religion I advise you some excellent readings (historical novels) about that period :

Well, I just spent four hours watching your videos to prepare for my test tomorrow.
suuuuuper helpful. but im afraid i cant find the "Thirty Years' War" video... am i insane, or is it not up?

Tom the greatest of all time
So is politique sowing seeds of secularization.
That could be said.
*Katherine de Medici & Henry II actually had 4 surviving sons with 3 becoming kings of France... Also their ruling house was pronounced Val- wah (spelled Valois but pronounced Val- wah)...
You make French history in an "accent" that people can understand is so incredible ... X O California
There is more to it. You forgot to say, that the Hugenotts Wars are the precursor like/to the the 30-Years War.
Tom Richey - the best !
Thanks my ap test is friday and these are a lifesaver
Thank you so much! These reviews are very helpful. Especially since I'm taking AP Exams this year for history in (Euro, Art, & U.S.) You are very funny as well, hehe.

Sana Shakir he has a triangle head?
Does he look weird because of incest?
Very helpful and insightful video ! Also, love it when he addresses Diderot haha
Very Helpful! thank you
Always glad to help!
"And this was an age before we figured out how to get along with eachother," he said before the 2016 elections.
Very helpful! Thank you! My teacher uses your videos in class. Thank you again!
David G. Pupo Thanks for the kind words, David. Your teacher must be AWESOME!
How did I just now notice that creepy cat in the background? LOL

Better you than me having to take a test on French pronunciation!
France's reaction seemed geopolitical. England was for Protestantism and Spain is more Roman Catholic. Therefore France is somewhere in between where they claim to be Roman Catholic but not allowing the Papacy to get involved in French affairs.
Thank you.
Helpful videos! Not the best French pronunciation but that's alright.
+TheAwesomeOne No lie! My French pronunciation is godawful.
Cardinal Richilieu, (du Plessis) is a protestant French surname, out and out. After the 100,000 were killed, the people on the ground disarmed everyone.
We called it the wars of the 3 Henrys
great pfp btw
dude, where do you get the rock samples from those interludes
i spent more time paying attention to whether or not he was going to drink from his nearly empty beer but of tea than i was the actual historical content.
Watching this 18 mins before my quarantine AP exam
Thank u for sharing. It’s really useful
At this time, I do not have any knowledge of an entity or individual referred to as Henry IV, Part 1.
I am French and I did comprehend quite a few things with your video! Thanks a lot!
And ... btw.... Your pronunciation skills are pretty good! ;) (apart from Valois [Val -wha] ) But Diderot just told me he's not mad at you ;)
Nice choice of sticks
i really liked your video
Where's Wally in the back of the St Bartholemew's day massacre.
I was so confused for the first half of the video until I realized that poster is of Denis Diderot! XD
Great videos.
Thanks
So helpful Thank You!
This conflict might of been bloodier and worse than the French Revolution! Conflicts based upon religion, culture or racial identity are always way worse than government ideology.
that Vic Firth stick tho!
+Mushy 808 I got that stick at a Megadeth concert several years ago. Glad someone appreciates it!
Tom Richey Awesome!
Is St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre considered a genocide?
Hehe. Sweet pronunciation of the french words :) But anyway. I like these short videos into some few areas of the big, big story.
French books say he was catholic. He was at the time they combined with Poland.
So I understand that St. bartholemew's day massacre was catholics killing protestants, but what prompted such a large scale massacre? And was it officials killing or peasants killing?
the "guy" faction was behind it and it was intended as a coup de force against the huguenots(the guys are the ultra-catholic faction)
Nicolas Williams I think boss180888 answered your question like a boss!
i got the name wrong though, it's the «guise» ;)
YOUR THE BEST EVER
i have midterms in 10 hours ty
They were also Southern French.
so helpful!!!
Thank you so much! This helped a lot ^^ thanks!
Also.. are you a devout lover of honey? Love how you keep it in your classroom! lol
I like to put honey on my tea now and then... especially if I'm not feeling well because it makes me happy! :P
I like to put honey on my tea now and then... especially if I'm not feeling well because it makes me happy! :P
Nice Vic Firth sticks lol you play?
0:23 does that dude in the portrait look like tom felton or am i seeing things
I can't be the only one who feels as if it's Matt Damon who's teaching me history... Come on, the guy looks very much like Matt Damon :D
+Joana V I get that now and then - a bit more lately with all of the fanfare surrounding The Martian!
that bottle of honey is too distracting oml i cant XD
Not sure what you're talking about or how I got here but I just wanted to say I have a honey bear just like yours.
what happened to learning for the sake of learning and not only for scoring on a test?
They were killed because Jon Calvin allowed finance, which allowed the US. Calvin rejected this notion. 50,000 left to England.
This was the end of France and the start of England. The Hugenote (Huisgenote/ house friends). They were friends of the Jews.
Irish Setter "The end of France" Yet France is a bigger influence than the UK economically/militarily still to this day.
Dr. Death - but America, Canada, Australia and NZ are England. And far more powerful than France.
Irish Setter No they aren't England. America broke away. France has more to due with the United States development than the UK.
France has more Aircraft Carriers, a larger Air Force, more tanks than Canada, Australia, NZ, England
Sorry you are wrong

You're very helpful good sir but you ain't sly by putting that Waldo in the image of the Bartholomew Day's Massacre... lol
Welp I just posted this right after I realized you pointed that out after I un-paused it... great
you don't mention dates.
thank youuuu!!!!!
was the huguenots a unified church?
No, unlike Catholicism Portestantism wasn't one religion but several different sects
What is a written test?
France exhausted itself in these wars and leadership of Europe passed to Spain and England.
Not at all. France only was strengthened over these wars, and would later lead to France's golden age during Louis XIV rule.
Sorry John but with the loss of life and economic chaos it took France over 100 years to recover any glory.
You are right in your analysis but this directly led to the climate for the Revolution later by allowing the conditions for Louis XIV to centralize his power and justify his divine right.
Thank you! - Signed, someone who's freaking out about her LEQ test.

Cool poster of diderot
he reminds me of Theo von

I spy Vic Firth drum sticks up there on your bookcase!
+J. B. Yeah, my brother snagged that drumstick after a Megadeth concert!
Awesome!
