  • The Hogarthian regulator configuration (aka long hose or hog loop setup), popularised by renowned cave diver William Hogarth Main, is designed to streamline your diving equipment while optimising performance and safety. This minimalist approach focuses on simplicity, reliability, and accessibility, making it a preferred choice for many technical and recreational divers worldwide.
    Join us as we break down each component of the Hogarthian system, from the primary and backup regulators to the SPG and essential accessories. We guide you through a complete assembly step-by-step and also discuss proper hose selection, equipment positioning, and best practices for setup and maintenance.
    Whether you're a beginner enjoying shallow shore dives, or a more seasoned diver exploring underwater caves or wrecks, understanding the use of Hogarthian regulator configuration will enhance your diving experience and ensure you're better prepared for many situations that may arise.

    When attaching LP hoses to second stages use two spanners with one just holding the second stage side still, because it is very easy to accidentally rotate the barrel inside the second stage and bend components. I know in Scubapro and Halcyon second stages they seem to rotate easily so it is definitely necessary with them.
    Of course, only slightly tighter than finger tight is all you need so you need to be careful when using two spanners because it's easy to apply too much force

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  6 месяцев назад

      @harambeexpress while this is true for most, the apeks second stages are designed differently and what you see on the video is the right technique.

    Great video, as always!! You really make a better diver. I would suggest to attach the hose snapbolt with some sort of quick-release, just in case one has to deal with any kind of hectic when taking it off the d-ring.

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  6 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks. It doesn't make sense to use a breakaway boltsnap for any configuration other than sidemount. In a traditional DIR configuration, you will always breathe from the long hose unless you are sharing it with someone. On the other hand, it makes total sense for sidemount, as you are switching between regulators and need to be able to deploy the long hose from the clipped-off position. We are working on a bunch of sidemount-related content, and this will also be covered.

      I have heard they can kink on long hoses. They also do not last as long as rubber and have had issues building up a crystal like residue inside blocking air after being used for 5 years in tropics. I prefer rubber for these reasons.

    Is longhose great for single set aswel?

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  6 месяцев назад +1

      That's precisely what's demonstrated in the video. This is the regulator for the single cylinder back mount setup, and as mentioned in the video, the long hose is compatible with all configurations, including single back mount, side mount, and twinset setups.

    How long is the Hose for your SPG? 60cm or 80cm?
    And how long is the Hose of your Backup 2. Stage?
    Thx 🔥

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  6 месяцев назад +1

      @noahnovosel1021, we have refrained from discussing sizes because we all have different physical attributes. Be sure you end up streamlined, so for the SPG, get the length that will not be dangling, and the short hose should be short enough not to create a big loop around your neck that's sticking out. The only thing you should be mindful of is never using a long hose shorter than 200 centimeters, regardless of your height.

    • @wilsonsing
      @wilsonsing 5 месяцев назад

      @@flowstatediversThank you for the informative and educational videos! I understand the advantage of a 200cm long hose in allowing both divers to swim in a single-file line while sharing gas. Could you please explain if there is any compelling advantage over a 150cm long hose if the setup is used for recreational tropical open water diving?

    • @DeepDiveDavid
      @DeepDiveDavid 5 месяцев назад

      Its all about safet. 210cm Long Hose Setup allows the divers to Dive Not only next to each other but also behind one another in confined spaces. Especially good for Cave / wreck or Mine diving where Diving next to each other is Not an Option @@wilsonsing

    Good video, but never use pure silicone grease. O2 compatible lubricants must be standard for any recreational or technical regulator configuration.

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  6 месяцев назад +2

      @@smdiver can you please explain why ?

    • @smdiver
      @smdiver 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@flowstatedivers silicone grease is only safe at low pressures .04 mpa, above 10 mpa ( 1470 psi ) SIT or spontaneous combustion can occur. Why would you risk this with either end of an HP hose @ 3000 psi ? Shouldn't all recreational divers be diving enriched oxygen?

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  6 месяцев назад +10

      @smdiver First of all, not every recreational diver should be diving with nitrox. Secondly, nothing is going to combust with mixes lower than 40%, which is the recreational nitrox limit anyway. Most importantly, applying O2 lubricant will only be effective if you avoid contamination during the application process. Therefore, unless you do it in a completely sterile environment with gloves and O2-cleaned equipment, it's useless and will be no different from any silicone grease.

    • @smdiver
      @smdiver 6 месяцев назад +1

      @@flowstatedivers Sorry but I strongly disagree! Why do most equipment manufacturer used O2 compatible lubricant and orings?

    • @MegaEpicLlama
      @MegaEpicLlama 6 месяцев назад

      Another issue with silicone grease is that the composition isn't exactly the same from brand to brand. Some won't be as pure as others and might still have hydrocarbons left. O2 lubricant is guaranteed to be safe.

    So basically, the short hose is the hose with the Octopus?(Spare reg.)?

    • @flowstatedivers
      @flowstatedivers  4 месяца назад +1

      Forget about the term "octopus." The necklace regulator is for your personal use only because you'll be donating your long hose, which is the one you normally breathe from. This is different from the "octopus" concept. Have a look at the gas sharing video of ours so you get the full picture :)

I was just wondering as I just got a new set, the Mares 62X Abyss and the Mares SXS Octo, So i'm thinking, i should put the SXS as my Personal use only, and the 62X as my long hose, or should i put it the other way around, thats what the intention was behind the question! "A hose of a different color" O_o (dir-excessive)

    • @harambeexpress
      @harambeexpress 6 месяцев назад

      It's just a consideration for diving near non-DIR divers.
      As long as you (as a DIR diver) aren't using the colour for any other reason then it's perfectly fine.
      As an aside, think there's an argument to be made that Hogarthian in the original sense is actually not DIR (in the original sense) at least where a twinset is concerned. Though this is quite pedantic... A reason for this is that DIR has the inflator coming off the right post and the Hogarthian config has it coming off the left because William/Bill Main says it helped detect roll-offs on the left post. Although DIR came out of Hogarthian, they are not exactly the same.
