Native Invader is an intense feast of melody, protest, tenderness and pain. In the summer of 2016, Tori took a road trip through North Carolina's Smoky Mountains. The intention was to reconnect with the stories and songlines of her mother's family, who were from the North Carolina and Tennessee Smoky Mountain area. That winter, two seismic events knocked the plan off its axis. The fall out from the US Election. And in January her mother, Maryellen Amos, suffered a severe stroke leaving her unable to speak.
The complex influence of America's alt-right Super PACs, lobbyists and think tanks informs much of the tension in Native Invader. "It wasn't going to be a record of pain, blood and bone when I began," Tori says. "It wasn't going to be a record of division. But the Muses 9 insisted that I listened and watched the conflicts that were traumatizing the nation and write about those raw emotions. Hopefully people will find strength and resilience within the songs to give them the energy to survive the storms that we are currently in". The sense of semantic distortion permeates Native Invader. Tori talks of the need to form a "militia of the mind" in the face of national lies.

I've never & will never hate anything you produce. I've only heard this song twice, already stuck in my head. I think some people forget that artists are supposed to evolve, not produce the same sounds over & over. Fuck them. I've cherished every album ever. They're like little sonic books filled with all the lessons you've taught, stories you've told, & myths you've modernized. They were all excellent gifts, & I can't wait to unwrap this one. Cheers to Tori!!
wow that was written so beautifully! i feel the same way.
Thank you much for writing this, completely echoes how I feel. I will love her and her music until the day I die and even then.
EXACTLY!! I see a lot of whining about how it's not the same piano ballad here & on Facebook. Guess what? We ALL change. Can any of these whiners honestly say that they are the same as they were 10 years ago? 20 years ago? I evolved from 20 to 30 to nearly 40 now. If I were writing music, my songs would all represent different stages in my life. Do these people really expect Tori Amos (or any artist) to never change? How silly...
hate it or not - when production sucks - it sucks. what is so hard to understand?
Anna Stesia thank youuuu!
I love that I don't love Tori's new songs immediately. I love that she's enough of an artist to challenge me, to challenge herself, to work for it, and to make me work for it. It's not that it isn't good. It's that it's different from what she's done before, and that's a good thing. That being said, this melody and instrumentation are beginning to sweep me away, and I'm extremely excited for the rest of the album to do the same. Not to mention that the message in this song is exactly what I need at this fucking crazytown juncture in America's history. We ARE gonna ride out this storm. I hope Tori means it when she says she's not going anywhere soon. 'Cause I need you, girl.
slivertoe Best comment here! Fourth time listening to this song, and this video totally nails it down for me.
Same here!! some of her albums I hated at first I listened to years later and I'm just blown away.
i think her music changed after her ayahuasca trip
So perfectly said!
Nice🔆… did you weather the storm well my friend …
I love how all her albums are different but ALWAYS have her gorgeous voice and that Tori sound! She's totally unique and original and a goddess!
This glorious, soulful Lady has helped me endure so many storms since I first heard her at the age of 19 in 1996! Whether I endured male rape, Narcissism in all its ugly dresses, the tragic death of a partner far before his time, or the enduring grace of respecting that life evolves and has to, I pay full respect to Tori and LOVE her evolution! Hugs to fellow Toriphiles out there. She's a Goddess and I'm deeply grateful that she followed Tash's advice to continue to "Rock", because she truly can! Let the haters hate - it says far more about them than it EVER will about Tori!
Beautiful words - she has carried me through times when no-one else could. Thank You Tori - I hope you read the good comments sometimes.
Gorgeously growing more mature and still keeping her cryptic and mythological roots. Love the rhodes and the hammond organ. The more i listen, the more i appreciate
I really don't know why people have this awful behaviour of comparing a new artist's album with the old ones and being rude. She is not the same, she's changed, we've changed. There's an effort to produce and work on that. We dont need to say it's crap, awful. There's no obligation to love it, but please, give her a little respect, at least.
YEAH! That's the point! It brings me back the Scarlet's ambient! I really enjoyed it! ♥
The room is open. But being critical is different of being hateful with words. Negativity harms everyone, no matter how it's spread. And that was my point. warmth!
you make perfect sense. Respect Tori. She a human with feelings and we all deserve respect. Who wants to stay in a time capsule and never evolve or strive to be different from who they were last week for better or worse? Let them limit themselves - limited minds must remember "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all"
If Tori didn't change up her music from album to album she would have had a very short career. I agree; it is absurd to expect a recording artist to release albums that sound pretty much identical. The fans would get bored and the artist would starve.
its called Life ! u cant please everyone and theres nothing you can do about it but i like this new song
I had been a huge fan of Tori in the 90s, and for some reason, I kind of lost her. Man, what a loss for me. I heard this song on a reaction video and didn't love it immediately, but I couldn't get rid of it. It stayed with me. Then I looked up the story of the song, and I started to tear up. My husband, at 39, had a cva/stroke, and this brilliant guy, who has an MBA in marketing and taught software training across the world, developed aphasia. The ache in this song is so familiar. I adore her and this song.
A follower since '92 and this has become my new favorite.
Junnosuke Iijima .. I have followed her since 1992 as well, and this is my favorite right now too. I so love an evolved EWF. 💕
JS TEAM Since 92 as well? Great. Now got my copy of Native Invader Deluxe and am hooked on the new sound. The songs are authentic and raw. Sounds great on heavy bass headphones! Reindeer brought tears to my eyes thinking of cat who died 2 years ago.

Its like falling in love, as if it's Cornflake Girl!
Same here. This single was everything to me!
Absolutely beautiful. What a stunning track.
I like this a lot. It's a slightly new sound to Tori but sort of reminds me of the Scarlet's Walk and Beekeeper eras. Such a calm and soothing song, perfect for relaxed summer evenings. I love the Hammond on the backgroung (or whatever organ it is).
new sound? nothing is new here...
@@annastesia4547 Each album of Tori's has a different sound I know I'm late.
Absolutely beautiful. Each album is a new journey and I'm so excited to follow you on this one Tori. Can't wait! Love, love, love you!
this is one of the most beautiful songs i have ever heard and i am so grateful for it
So beautiful song. I love it.
this song has entered my dreams already.Absolutely beautiful.15 albums in girl and i am still walking with you.See you in the forest....................
This song is a real grower, love it.
loving it the more i listen. It's nice to hear her step away from the piano driven sound. It's a song she can actually just stand and sing and not be chained to setting down at a keyboard all concert. love her and her evolution.
Tori sing a song without her hands on a keyboard? Unthinkable! Keyboards are always attached to Tori! I think she's playing a Rhodes Piano and a Hammond Organ at the same time in this song! I've seen her do stuff like that before!
I presume she's playing the organ?
Best Tori song in a looooooong time. I'm so in love!
I started playing Cornflake Girl when I was 13. Now I'm 26, and I feel your music closer to my soul more then ever. Such a happiness to have you like my inspiration, as for others, sharing your experiences and translating them into open eyes dreams.
Beautifully written and profound song. Thought it was dull to start with and took me a few listens to fully connect, but now it feels indispensable.
Love Tori Amos!!!! Beautiful!!!!
Beautiful song, Tori. Thank you, I can't wait to see you tonight in Toronto
I am so in love with this song and I can not wait for the Album to drop!! So beautiful!
So many old friends in Tori songs! So grateful for new! Wish I could thank this genius for helping that healing and always giving me hope with words i was once so afraid to reveal !!!
Tori, you make me so happy with your music. It's gotten me through so many life events! Love this song and I love you, too, gurl! You are awesome!
Sometimes a song comes riding into your life at just the right time. This is one of those for me. I think I'll be spending a lot of time in the company of this song over the coming months.
Fantastic song and video!! This song has lots of meaning to me. I think it's about depression and coming back to the Otherside from it. Thank you for posting this video!! I think it's about not leaving yourself from the inside and others around you and riding out the storm within you.
This has a real John Fruscianate guitar style, just wonderful, this and RK are my album standouts for sure.
Como é bom te ouvir por décadas, vem nos visitar no Brasil
it's good. so relaxing. and i love that her music sounds in a new way. like every her album is unique. can't wait to hear the rest. love you

What a month it's been since this song was released. It gets stuck in my head a lot.
the bit about Freyja
styx3956 hmm Freyja? I'll have to google that!
Love the softness of this song, like floating on a cloud and wrapped in a blanket...ty Tori!! Cant wait for the album!!! XOXOXO
But who do you think Annie is ?
I don't know. Some people have mentioned it's a reference to Annie Oakley and the play Annie Get Your Gun.
Yes I have asked this question on facebook in the group "Tori Amos and fans" and that is the answer I was given
Lovely, and thanks for the above description of its origins. It makes more sense now. As always, thank you Tori for the music and the hope that we can ride this out, faith that humanity is greater than the current storm.
Hi Tori....Robert here from CA. My husband and I are coming to see you in Milan! Love this new music. Hope to hear it live

I love this song and I love this lyric video! Well done! Kudos!
Beautiful! Love You Tori
When Tori announced "cloud riders", I didn't expect them to come on ponies...
I must admit the more I listen to it, the more it grows on me. But I still hope for more raw energy in the other tracks.
After a few listens, I like it. I am really anticipating the other singles so I can better gauge the sound of this album, but I'm not disappointed thus far.
Finally... somwthing new n awesome from this lovely lassie for us here Down Under that can not afford to see her every concert. Hoping this means she will return to Melbourne after all these yrs!! WOOT WOOOOT
Do I love it from the first listening? No. What I love of Tori's songs, is that invites me to create a relationship with her songs. After pay attention and overcoming the prejudge... She slowly comes inside my mind and connect with my heart in a personal way.
I love you, strange little girl.
Tori, please come to Brazil.
yeah, tori. come on, girl! ;-)
please! Brasil aqui \o/
Tori amo 😍❤
........maybe this sounds silly. But every Tori album has lyrics/poetry that are just what I need. That shooting star she sees at 4:22 am and my sweet Dad, who I miss terribly was born on 4/22. In addition, the initials of my maiden name are a.m. I Love "Native Invaders", and everything else since "Little Earthquakes"
When she say she saw a shooting star at 422am I believe she is referring to an angel, because the number 422 is an angelic number and as several different meanings one of these is that the number 422 symbolizes having faith in oneself. And if you serve to others the universe will reward and blessed you.
Good work.
Excellent! Love 💕 you Tori!
Tori please. It’s 4 years today. We need your words music and knowledge 💫🌙💙
I'm excited for the album now :)
Got my tickets today to see her in November at the Denver Paramount! Yay! Have loved her for 20 years continue to do so.
Help me bring in the October moon
I bloody love this song.
Amazing beautiful powerful record. Love this song. Since listen #1.
Love this beautiful tune xx
The opening few bars reminds me of 'Mr Writer by Stereophonics'
Really like this song. Very poetic and slow burning. Music for mature adults.
You should hear Tori Amos music with open heart and open mind. If you let her pulls you in her music, you'll discover that maybe it's a new place but where it's still nice to be.
I hit like before I even heard it. Just because it's Tori!!!
LOVE
Love Tori forever
amazing Tori.
A wonderful and beautiful song
It's took me a few plays but now I am really liking this song.
Beautiful
Thank you ❤
how much i luv this girl....
I love this song and this video and Tori Amos!!!
She said that the edge of the cliff .... from the other side .... saw a shooting star at 4:22am
First GOOD song after 14 years!
I needed to hear these words! Ear gasms of aknowledgement of my own storm!
This voice !! 💙💙💙🦄💙💙💙
I love you Tori!
An amazing return! Love this song, love you Tori
Love this song ❤️
Love
This deserves more love 🧡
wow.. love this.. it's like floating in a weird dream.. really spacey.
Nice, very nice. Love from TX.
You know this already,
Yay!
Tori is awesome , totally a song witch
I can't wait to see her finally in November!! I been waiting for 12 years. 😉
Thank you, Tori. I've had a feeling since that awful day last November that we really needed to hear from you.
Another great song, Tori. Bjork is coming out with a new album inspired to some degree by the November decision. I'm happy my fellow artists are rocking the mic in solidarity. For us. Most importantly, for themselves because they need to process what's been going on too
Hillary Clinton will never be President. :^)
Always Great.
Amazing Tori :D
Love this. Lyrics are genius.
Dieser Song hat mich total gefangen. So schöne Gitarrensounds und interessante Gesangslinien. Ich liebe die Melodie ab 01:10 Super!!!
"caught a lite sneeze, dreamed a little dream, made my own pretty hate machine" Hands down my favorite song of hers and and great lyrics. I believe she and Trent Reznor had been dating and broke up, is what inspired the lyric that contains the title of NIN debut album.
a chariot pulled by cats?
Classic 💔
love this, as I knew I would. THANK YOU TORI
I'm going to share this on my FB page for Catalonia and October 1st. in honor of Uncle John Cornford. And George Orwell can hum along if he likes.
Looking forward to Chicago show in October. ;)
I miss her at the piano! Odd to hear a Tori Amos song without a piano.
Still, growing on me....
There's an electric piano in the song. It's more in the background than usual, though.
Simply Tori...once again
beautiful song Tori!
superb - as always
It’s disappointing to think that Tori Amos has many fans in Latin America, I personally have been following her music for 15 years, and apparently she doesn’t even think about doing a tour in this part of the world. Sad.
Tori is too classy for Latin America.
I love you tori💞💞💞💞💞🤘❣️😢
These new songs and their videos are seeming tailor made for me and I don't mean to sound self centric so much. I know about Tori's background pretty well but these songs make me feel less alone about my own, which is a very very lonely place that nobody else is in. I hope that changes. War is hell. Suppression is dangerously compliant.
hello ta, was looking for your version of solsbury hill. a remaster version from your 2001 album would be nice. going to count on andy bell. elle for hill
Beautiful!
