- Here are 10 cameras under 500$ which I consider to be a good choice for a photography beginner! What I'm trying to do here is save you a lot of research time by doing the basic research for you, so that after this video, if you think to have found a camera that suits you, you can indulge into deeper research on that specific model. I hope this is in any way helpful to you!

Hello and happy new year! I know...this is an unusually technical video for my channel, but I hope I could help you in any way, in case you are on the look-out for a budget camera to start out with photography :)
Have a good week,
Teo
where do you buy your cameras
Thank you Teo! You’re the reason I got myself a GX80/85 with the kit lens and a 45-140mm f/4. I recently got myself a Sigma 16mm f/1.4 and I’m absolutely loving it!
Great list. Watching your videos influenced me to buy the LUMIX GX85. I thoroughly enjoy this little camera. Thanks!
Super informative and you really put in a lot of effort with the sample pictures. Well done
The biggest sellng point that got my attention for the GX80-series (was looking at the GX85 specifically though) was the IBIS. This 2-lens kit is now $800 (sometimes on sale for $600) and finding a camera with 5-axis IBIS is virtually unheard of in cameras under $1000. So this is one stand-out feature that has me considering the GX85 (probably in the 2-lens kit form, as the extra telephoto lens just adds another $200 to the overall price).
Very useful indeed. A good list to check out. I am very happy with my gx85 ... giving me what I want 😁. Nice Teo!
Afters years of using only phone to take pics, last autumn I have found on UK ebay gx80 for £280 with shutter count next to nothing(practically new camera). I absolutely love this little camera. Sure you can't get very long exposures, sensor isn't great in very low light, but for camera is light, portable and capable for it's size. I was torn between some second hand full frame dlsr and micro four thirds. In the end size and portability were bigger selling point for me. Additionally lenses are bit cheaper and it isn't huge problem to adapt vintage ones. from time to time I use canon FD on it and thinking about getting Zuiko OM adapter(bought cheaply OM10 and OM2n locally in great condition... but it's bit expensive to shoot film for me).
Woah. The amount of effort on making this video is really commendable! 👏🏼 Those photo edits were great . Having great gear helps, but practicing your skills and having the will to take great photos will give awesome results regardless of the gear.
What a great video to start the year. Job well done Teo! 🙌🏼
Ohh sweeet, happy to read your appreciation🙇🏻♂️ Yeah I 100% want to encourage creating with whatever is available🙌🏼
I already own two cameras, but it was really inspiring to watch your edits! 🔥
I just found your channel. Your voice is amazing and very soothing. And thank you for the informative video :)
Thank you for this. I needed this fr
Love the retro green/golden camera display designs
Thank you for this video. I actually bought the lumix gx80/85 a little while ago because of your videos and it works so well!
Same here! Three weeks ago! :)
Are you satisfied with the purchase?
@@BluntWizz Definitely satisfied! I still have a lot to learn about both photography and videography, but this camera is an absolute joy to use!
@@benjaudon13 haha nice! Same here :)
Finally took a hobby that I always wanted to do. A perfect excuse for me to go out and explore. Hope it brings you lots of good times!
what lens are you using with it?
@@gaston7484 I have both of the kit lenses for the camera, but I started using vintage lenses and they work out so well. If you get the right vintage lens, the image practically glows. I'd recommend getting the "Pentax-a 50mm f2" lens, (That would be a 100mm equivalent btw).
I choose the EM 10 ii and just love it. I managed to acquire mine just before Christmas brand new from Olympus and with the kit lens and 30 months warranty. Oh , in case you were wondering - the price of all this goodness was £350.
I have used in a limited way most of the cameras on your list at one time or another and can testify how good they all are. Those without a viewfinder can be difficult to use in bright sunlight unless you can shield the screen . Bigger bodies mean bigger lenses and that may not seem a problem at first , but after along day , you may find the light camera has started to weigh on your neck.
Looking at the sample images produced and you cannot find much to complain about there . Do try and feel the camera before you buy or at least be able to return it if it does not feel right.
Olympus do allow you to try before you buy, which may be handy if you like there cameras.
There are some great on line videos on Olympus cameras and how to set them up etc.
Finally, don’t over read the views and I did this to the point I took for ever to make the purchase . Thinking back I could have kicked myself, as I ended up getting the camera I wanted when I first saw it. All those lovely images I missed on because I only had my phone is just ridiculous . Please, don’t over cook the choosing thing.
Finally , it is the person who takes the image and not the camera that matters ; looking at the photos from my phone I can contest to that.
This was a very slick presentation and very well put across . Thank you for sharing your thoughts .
Where did you buy it?
@@daries
I bought mine direct from Olympus and they shipped it to the UK from Germany . It was a fantastic offer and included a kit zoom . The only thing that was omitted was the strap . As it happens I thought the strap from my Nikon FM 2 A, which I from
a old Minolta . I then acquired a Billingham Digital bag for my birthday and acquired two prime lenses as additional gifts . In short , for a few pounds I get s new kit and quite honestly I was never to get anything like this with free extended warranty off over two years . The only way to match the body only price to match the kit I bought is to look at used market .
I doubt if I will need to replace my kit looking forward , as I have everything I need to produce great images . Then finally I put off getting an iMac m chip 24” set up and learnt that the upgrade should arrive later this year . This may tempt me to look at the improved product or consider a heavily discounted model .
Thank you for the video! i have one question though, is lumix g7 or lumix gx85 better? i have a canon 800d and looking for a second cam for video as i feel my 800D is a bit lacking in video taking.
Thank you so much Teo for this video, I find it very useful in my research for the first camera, I was very fortunate to stumble upon this your video. The researching on this topic is quite overwhelming.
In your other video you mentioned that mirrorless are better in many ways than DSLR. If you will find it interesting, maybe you could make a video on this topic.
Also, a question: yesterday I stumbled upon this video "Fujifilm Film Simulation Recipes that will make you stop shooting RAW" - I found it so interesting, first of all - it helps to eliminate the post production and have ready photos right out of the camera, which is a very interesting thing I think. And second of all, this ties with my other doubt about first camera to buy - what is the best affordable camera model (under 500$) that gives best results right out of the camera (basically best jpegs). 🤔
I'm actually researching what camera to get for my mom, not myself. So this is probably the most important factor really, considering all I think editing (RAW) files is not an option for her (and for many other people, parents, or even older people).
And this kind of makes me look more towards Canon, since I hear from different videos and comments on RUclips that their "color science" is best (or very good). Even though of course I don't actually know how jpegs from other cameras look, but that's what I hear, that Canon in this regard is best.
This Simulation Recipes seems like such a great solution for this, plus one could change the recipes depending on the mood one wants in this or that situation. Is this only Fuji's feature? I read in comments that people chosen a Fuji camera because of this feature.
Very interesting too for those who like to make their photos seem shot on film, right? Watching some of your videos if I'm not mistaken you are one of such people.
I think here are 3 great video ideas. One is - about mirrorless vs DSLR. Second is - best first camera in terms of best photos without editing. Third - a whole world really of Simulation Recipes with Fuji cameras (or any other cameras that support this functionality).
Hope this my comment was in some way useful to you.
Thank you for your great content, I'm learning *a lot* from it.
Also I wonder, does this functionality only allow to simulate different film filters, or does this allow to simulate any contemporary (or digital) looks too.
Good video and well researched
Really needed this...THANK YOU
Uhh you're welcome!🙌🏼🙌🏼
I think the fuji xt20 is also deserved to get in this list
Just got the xa-5 for Christmas!
I got a Fuji xt200 myself for 479£ here in Northern Ireland. Its a great camera so far.
Went from fullfframe to mft(gx80) because of the weight when traveling. Bought a nicelens for it though
Thankyou Theo i m an analogue photographer. Iive the poetry ,the excitement I fell between shutting a frame and the waiting for the moment to seeing it emerge from the developing tray. The immeciacy of digital photigraphy is a reflection of a society avid for instant gratification .so greedy and d excessive. I love your videos .IS YOUR FATHER ANDREW CRAWFORD ??

If its your first camera i would recommend buying a used one. Bought a 6D with a 50mm 1.8 for 450 euros
the panasonic gx80 /85 is the most budget friendly according to specs
Afters years of using only phone to take pics, last autumn I have found on UK ebay gx80 for £280 with shutter count next to nothing(practically new camera). I absolutely love this little camera. Unless you want autofocus
13:38 went full Minority Report on this edit. Thanks for the video though. It's been really helpful. Subscribed!
Very good video.
I've been doing reasearch on what Camera to get for the past month, and everytime it comes down to the Sony A6000, i want to shoot low light, and this camera seem to be the best option at this price range by far.
If you bought it, tell me if it's good?
Like you, I think the Lumix GX80 is great value. I just bought a spare body, used but just like new, on ebay for £200 (220 Euros?).
What camera would you recommend for someone wishing to get into wildlife photography at this price range?
Buying cameras used is a great option, especially if you're not sure how often you'll be shooting. And it's better for the environment. It's best to spend your money on a good quality lens.
if i want a small compact camera and i’m only going to use it for photographs what should i buy? budget under 400 pls
I'd suggest also a used fuji xt20, xt2, maybe even a used xt30 if lucky
Pentax K1000, MX & LX+ SMC 35-70mm, 40mm, 50mm, 135mm, 200mm & Samyang 15-28mm.
These are all great cameras for beginners however you didn't mention any fixed lens cameras. Some of the good ones can match or beat DSLRs and Mirrorlesses.
Hey Teo, love your videos, they're so good. I have a question on your editing. Do you mainly use Split toning for the heavy blue edits or do you do something different?
Hello, aww thank you🙇🏻♂️ It's a mix of the red channel in the tone curves and indeed a lot of Split Toning🙌🏼
@@teocrawford thanks man! Hope you’re staying safe during these times.
I did not understand ANYTHING
The size of the MFT sensor is actually only 1/4th of the FF sensor, while the diagonal line (what corresponds to the length of the "normal" lens) IS 1/2 of the FF sensor. Just saying.
And, to my knowledge, (almost) all Olympus Pen cameras, while having only the LCD, can be used with the add-on EVF, but that setup is punching thru the $500 limit...
Gruß
Great video, great channel. Subbed!
Ohh thank you!🙇🏻♂️
I really like my EOS M200, but I wouldn't buy into the EF-M system* if I had to do it over. It's abandonware at this point.
* And I bought into it. In addition to the M200, I have an M6mkii and seven EF-M mount lenses.
More than the video my force was on you ❤🤭
Nikon D90, 100 Euros (Consumer Professional) . Nikon D300, 120 Euros (Professional) . Nikon D7000, 180 Euros (Consumer Professional) . Nikon D7100, 250 Euros (Consumer Professional) . Nikon D700, 350 Euros (Professional) . All will take old Nikon lens (F Mount) way back to 1977. Saving you a shed load of money.
Good video thank you
Sure🤗
Nikon D3500 or Sony a6000? PS Great video!
Ich: suche nach ner neuen Kamera und liebe deine Videos
Du: jo hier n video von mir über die Empfehlung die ich gern würde.
Prefect timing
Ohh perfekt! :D🙌🏼🙌🏼
Cool Video! Love this kinds of lists
But what is up with your audio, so much hall, can’t even listen to it via headphones or my brain hurts 😢
love from indian🇮🇳❤
Really love ur videos. Keep going....❤
Yooo thank you!🙇🏻♂️
cheak lumix lx100
Can someone please recommend good camera for photography and family photo, my budget 600$ I am beginner so I know nothing about cameras..
fujifilm xt200/sony a6100
But, if u can rise your budget, u can choose between fujifilm xt20/sony a6400
and Canon eos m50 maybe, canon is good for skin tone since u'll use it for family photo...
I hope you didn't spend most of your money on a camera body. It's the Lens that gives you the quality of the image. A prime 35mm or 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 for sharp images. All camera's these days are as good as each other to be fair.
@@badger67 thank you
@@badger67 Not exactly. A great lens on a 16 megapixel sensor won’t be the same quality as a typical lens on a 30 megapixel. Let’s not buy too much into platitudes.
Sweeeettt
Swwweeeet🤩
Guys pls, i have 500€ no more, whats the best camera i can buy?
top
Lumix GX80 is 660$ without a lens.
No way, you must be looking at some very overpriced shop😵 You should be able to find it for much less🤔
Cameras? Don't you own a good phone ? You can use it to talk to people too.
A camera is your creative view of the world. A phone is the software engineer's and designer's view on what looks best for people
they are not worth it tho, a phone would give you similar images nowadays, if you really want something professional a 2000$-3000$ camera would be a better choice
I disagree. A phone doesn't match a camera's raw files and the ability to switch lenses is beyond what phones are capable of. Phones have become insanely good, but still if one wants to pursue photography I would recommend a dedicated camera. If the results are the same or worse it's most likely due to the photographer not the gear🙌🏼
Has my man tried to take a pic of the moon at night with his phone? Lol good luck. How about zooming in without losing a ton of quality? Again, good luck. No phone cam can do actual optical zoom because their lenses can’t move- there’s no motor. It’s all software trickery, and the results are evident upon close up inspection of the image.
