#1 review the work done and if there is work completed that requires a permit and one wasn’t pulled then report them to the local licensing agency. They can hold their feet to the fire and if they don’t perform they’ll lose their license and be ordered to pay restitution. going this route is the quickest and one of the best ways to get the intended results with little to no out of pocket expenses
I used a contractor who was on a list of from the city and got burned, not really sure where to go from here because a few yrs have already passed . Just have learned that it really doesn't matter who recommends who, everyone must still do their own due diligence regardless.
So as an update to thus post, turns out the contractor just reached out to me a few days ago. The property that we had him working on might be eligible for migrant housing. So now we are looking into how everything can be structured to do so. Maybe things will turn out better than before...time will tell 🤷♂️
Going through this too. Over 1000 is a felony . So I’m currently working with the county attorney and this can’t wait for Justice. The last straw over him taking 14k and giving me a 2k floor that was crappy work anyway. Was he took 1709 from me for a sink and dishwasher and never came back. Refuses to give my money back. FELONY
We won a $10,000 judgement in small claims court. Since we are in Alaska, the court garnished the contractor's Permanent Fund Dividend check. Attorney is too costly and can't squeeze blood from a stone, small claims court is faster and does not cost much.
If homeowners actually paid good money and hired reputable company’s/contractors then they wouldn’t have this problem. Unfortunately, most homeowners are going for the chucks in trucks and then question why they got burned at the end. 😂
If most contractors were not scam artists and thieves this would not happen either. And most reputable contractors won't do home improvements cause they got city and company contracts worth a lot more ..
They expect a job to be completed per the contract and what was agreed upon. Contractors in general don't work hard and expect too much for sloppy jobs.
This has happened to me too. Many contractors are sometimey they will leave your work to go start with someone elses work.
I've tried calling the Better Business Bureau and was told that they have so many complaints that they are backed up for years.

depending on the size of the jobs the bigger more reputable contractors simply won't show up because the job isn't worth enough to them.
