Next time better is to take both boards and then do the comparison. Further more, nice to watch again and nice spot!!

Can you do a video on the differences between sailing on saltwater and freshwater...
What kinds of effects do you notice and does it in any way impact your choice of what equipment to take for the day?
I know for most of us it doesn't but does it make any difference at the higher end of the sport?

👍I always found the racing/speed boards did aquaplane more easily to reach a more swift pace, but the Slalom boards are more suitable for the Slalom motions as the deeper hull penetrated the aquatic surface more extensively which enabled the person using one to perform those actions more swiftly.
Thanks for showing your Windsurfing actions.

You are really fast both with slalom and speed boards. I enjoyed the video. Thanks Nils.

I used to speed sail in Weymouth in the UK when the wind which blew over the large bank on the shore to create dead flat conditions. I had a custom 17inch (45cm) Windtek speed board. It looked pretty cool and was extremely narrow but I only got the use out it 2-3 times a year if I was lucky. Not an easy thing to get going and sail at all. It was also almost impossible to gybe but very fast when it got going. I would probably stick to a small slalom board these days though to get more use out of it all year round. I would say though that modern production speed boards are lot lighter and probably a bit easier to get going but you still have to be a dedicated speed freak to own one.

I had a look on GPS Speedsurfing and a few sailors have used speed boards for their fastest speeds but most of their sessions are on small slalom boards. Pete Young didnt use a speed board and is still 2nd fastest. Scotty's best on a speed board is about 0.5 faster than a slalom for 10s average. His best 500m is with a small slalom board. I had a Falcon 80l and that felt like a speed board.

Very interesting topic, hard to answer as you said. I guess one more factor : a speed board is often crazier than slalom one 🙂

Interesting video, Nils. Great as usual. The feinefinnen link needs an update

An interesting clip thanks Nils. I wonder what fins you're using on each board as I would expect fin efficiency and drag to come into the conversation.

The difference is acceleration that small slalom boards have .Plus if the run is short still the slalom is a bit faster ! General if you go for max 5 seconds in a speed race slalom is faster if you want fun and max speed a lucky gust can do the work on a speed board ! Its a bit tricky but most important is the wind and angle ...also if lake is closer to the sea salty water is faster ! Nice video 😊😊

Back in the day, Bic did a speed board. Can't remember what it was called, but I borrowed it and it was sailable on the sea at what was a wave venue!

I enjoyed your video. 52cm, that was a slalom width back in the day. But yeah, chop is the limiting factor when it comes to speed. I wonder if the current designs are really the right way to improve that. I.e. I am not convinced that a "flat" bottom in this conditions is really the fasted. But what the fuck do I know...

Etwas verwirrend 😂😂 ein Test am gleichen Tag, mit 2 Ridern, und dann wechseln wäre interessant.

Sounds like slalom boards are fine for the "average" surfer who likes to speed, whereas surfers with ambitions to eek out the last 0.1knt to score topspeeds might want to consider investing in a speed board. Did I get that right? Anyway, fun video and glad you didn't get knocked out by your Modena ;)

ganz ganz schwierig, was du da machst. Ich glaube, es wäre sinnvoller gewesen, wenn du und GER 215 immer nach jeweils 5 Runs die Bretter getauscht hättet.
