I saw a tv attack piece on Phil Collins around 1999 (around Tarzan press tour), which was all about Simon complaining about how his dad doesn't support him enough dispite inheriting all Phil's musical talent. I feel it didn't really help his career.
Stan Kubrick's grandson was the singer and guitarist for a metal band. He had a feature on one of the songs off Ice Nine Kill's Silver Scream album. There's also Nelson, a pop-rock/glam metal band formed by the twin sons of classic rocker Rick Nelson, who himself was the son of famous actors and musicians Ozzy and Harriet Nelson. I am completely unashamed to proclaim my love for that band. Their third album is some incredible hard rock. Similarly, I love Julian Lennon's music. For the flip side, there's the Calling. Somehow, the man who brought us Parasite, Trancers, Doctor Mordrid, and Evil Bong, some of the most out there films, had a kid who makes the most boring post-grunge slop. I wish I could forget the Calling, but every once in a while when I watch a Full Moon film, the thought of 'whatever happened to Charles's son?' will pop into my head.
One example I can think of is Elijah Blue Allman, son of Gregg Allman from Allman Brothers Band… and Cher. I gotta say, I like his band Deadsy, I actually didn’t know any of this when I first heard them and yeah, they’re pretty good if you’re fan of bands like Orgy or Neuromancer
As a Genesis fan I did check out some of Simon Collins' music a while back and it was just as generic as you said. I wasn't aware of the album with Phil and Steve Hackett so I'll have to go check that out. But Phil's son Nic seems to have inherited dad's drum chops so that's something. The music from Sting's son sounds the most interesting (and better than Sting's other son whose band opened for The Police on their reunion tour).
Is Jeff Buckley going too far back for your demographic? And is it he a nepo baby if he met his father only once and in many ways made a bigger impression on the world?
Jeff is definitely a lot more of a commercial success than his father, and was the poster boy for 90's alternative sounds. I can't name a single song Buckley Snr has made.
I've seen both of Bob Marley's sons perform, they were alright but there was one occasion that felt kind of jarring where one of them covered One Love, and then followed it up by his own song singing about how dangerous he is. Conflicted messaging really.
Slipnot, they sound pretty good though, never listened to them except here. They have a legit sound even if it emulates what came before. I'll give them a listen sometime in the future. Must be tough to actually be good, and still have that nepo reputation, it automatically changes the perception sadly.
Vended is a band that just pissed me off. It's a Slipknot cover band that just got big due to it's family members. There are so many cool modern metal bands that don't even have a fraction of their fame, but are actually original
Phil Collin's other song, Nic was the drummer for the final Genesis tour and now has his own band with the son of Steve Lukather, (guitarist/vocalist of Toto)
"The youth has really fuckin' dropped the ball in the innovation front when it comes to rock n roll these days" Yeah, I have to agree. Then there is my age group (I'm turning 37 this year) who are basically still listening to the music of their teenage years, which is primarily pop punk and emo. Edit: sometimes modern hardcore and wannabe "death metal" crossover crap. There is also a third group of kids who are starting bands who are freshly 21 who I have run sound for thar are trying to emulate the 90's grunge thing. I am least offended by this because it's nostalgia for me and the show I ran sound a band dropped, so I basically got to request a few Silverchair songs and made those kids' day. I also ended up giving other bands extra songs ... to varying success. Good video.
oh, good example! I totally forgot about her. I think her brother and younger sister have music careers now too but they're going the whole "cool indie hipster" route
@@DancingwithGhosts Miley's sister is on Records which is part of Sony which she had a big hit called July. She sounds more traditional country and Americana. She don't sound like her sister.
I wouldn't say going bad because she's actually successful and has a career on her own and not just because of her dad. Sure she had some luck with being a Disney star.
Before the term nepo baby became widespread, there was Julian Lennon. Unlike a lot of examples on this list, people were desperate for Julian to take over his father's role and sing in the Beatles. He looked and sounded like his old man, and has the talent to do it. However Julian decided he was not going to play the part of Mini-John and was more than happy to quietly make his own music and not seek much fame. Oooh he could have been massive if he'd wanted it... funny thing is, the much-less talented Sean Lennon is the one wanting recognition.
Father Luis Alberto Spinetta Son Dante of Illya Kuriaky and The Valderramas Father Julio Iglesias Son Enrique Iglesias Grandfather Vicente Fernández Father Alejandro Fernández Son Álex Fernández
Wolfgang appears to be turning into Hurley from _Lost._ Also, Billie Joe Armstrong's other son Joey was the drummer for SWMRS but... his career's kinda dead now.
I don't know if anyone else has posted a comment about this, but the son of Toto's Steve Lukather and Phil Collins' son Nic have a band named The Effect that I think is quite good.
Was surprised to find Simon Collins' stuff was so generic. Was switched on to this "Sound of Contact" band he was in for a bit. Kind of wish he'd stuck with it to see where the formula went, but it's not half bad: ruclips.net/video/d8TGFsLXoRo/видео.html
The first examples I think of are Wilson-Phillips, Julian Lennon, and the Wallflowers (Jakob Dylan), all acts that had actual charting hits. I think the lack of more successful "nepo babies" in music is less a function of raw talent not being inherited and more a function of how much of a fluke it really is to break through in music, combined with most children of the rich and famous never having the hunger and drive to really keep going with music when they are already set for life.
Another fun topic! I actually like Deadsy, personally. But, did you know the lead singer is Cher's son? Also, one of Powerman 5000's members is Rob Zombie's brother. They had a couple of good songs, but nothing too special.
he must have been one of the original members because when my band opeend for PM5K a few years ago it was just Spyder and he backing band were all like 20 years younger than him... they were all kids
I dont know what his work is like, but Dr. Phil has a musician son he talks about on his show sometimes named Jordan McGraw. Apparently hes friends with the Jonas Brothers and has toured with them. He was a guitarist for a band called Stars in Stereo, then formed a band called Hundred Handed...you know its successful because it doesnt even have a Wikipedia article.
I always wondered how Mark Ronson got all those features on the Uptown Funk album. I gotta say though, I really dig that album. Daffodils with Kevin Parker is awesome.
Which is interesting because her performance in The Godfather Part III incited one of the first big instances of nepo baby backlash. I'm glad that she was able to take the right lessons from all of that and do excellent work on her own terms.
@retrocatalog to be fair I've not seen god father part 3, I'm only speaking of her work on lost in translation, a fantastic film that was a huge huge influence in the world of anime directing.
Vended is actually a great band though just my opinion! But you have a good point on corporate music greed . Alot of famous artist are having there kids do the same thing as them ! Guess these musicians are having some family business going on here ?
All 4 Beatles have kids that have followed in their footsteps, although in some cases you can't really call them "nepo-babies"...well, in 1 case...Julian Lennon, the most successful musician son of a Beatle didn't exactly have the privileged upbringing one might expect. When his dad left, all he gave Julian and Cynthia (Julian's mother) was enough to pay for food, a house and to put Julian through school. Julian barely saw his father between 1968 and 1980. His music is a mixed bag. I'd say that although he received nothing in John's will, Julian kinda inherited John's talent, not to mention that he looks and sounds uncannily like John. John's other son though, Sean Ono Lennon, I'd say is far more of the stereotypical nepo-baby because he had everything handed to him but he doesn't really have the musical talent. His music has more in common with his mother's, it's a bit more melodic and he did do some interesting stuff with Les Claypool, but Sean just doesn't have it when it comes to being a musician/singer/songwriter. Dhani Harrison has done some great stuff. He was initially in a band called thenewno2, they were more alt rock and I'd describe them as somewhere between Foo Fighters and Air. Much like Julian, Dhani is practically the spitting image of his father, George, and his voice is somewhat similar. I don't think he's all that interested in being famous or anything like that and when he does release music, it's usually a fairly low key affair. He did an album with Ben Harper for which he did some TV appearances, but I get the impression that he just makes music because he enjoys doing it and isn't at all interested in being a rock star as he's had several opportunities to really cash in and has never really followed through with them. Ringo's son Zak is a session drummer who has worked with The Who and Oasis among others. As with Dhani, I don't think he's interested in being a star, he seems happy being in the background for other artists. Paul's son James has played guitar with his dad in the past and has done a few things here and there but has only really started to pursue a career as a musician in his own right fairly recently. I've heard a couple of his songs, it's not bad, he's clearly very influenced by his dad's work but the songs I've heard just seem to be lacking something. It feels a bit like a watered down version of something that Sir Paul might have done in the 80s.
By the way, you hit the nail on the head with Wolfgang Van Halen. Man, is his music generic. It's really boring, frankly. I can't stand his vocals. Nor could I stand them the times 3,000 other vocalists sounded exactly like that. Wolfgang just shows up, presents his songs, does a BEHIND THE MUSIC special that mostly just talks about his dad's death...and (get this) spends a lot of his free time attacking Van Halen fans (who are mostly being nice to him) on his X (Twitter) feed. It may have been more predictable, but I would have been more excited if Wolfgang had hired an amazing rhythm section and recorded a live in 5150 Studios power trio album. Wolfgang will NEVER, in my opinion, make it legitimately on his own. He will always be a Van Halen footnote.
The sporting world is where you get to see the whole nepobaby thing play out properly. Nobody is going to give you a job in sport because you have a famous dad. In a sport like soccer, you often find examples like David Beckham's kid where they might play like D grade football. Better than most but nothing like the dad. This is like a lot of musicians IMO. Oddly though, there are some examples of children of quite average players becoming great. The current top scorer in the English PL is the son of a mid-ranking player.
Got to check put Rise To Remain. Singer is Bruce Dickonson of Iron Maiden's son. They are more of a metalcore band though and soukd nobing like iron maiden
No mention of Wilson Philips? ;-) Also, there's Jenni Muldaur, daughter Maria Muldaur of Midnight at the Oasis fame. She put out an album that's, not great, but still enjoyable. Not quite country, but leaning that way.
I definitely give John David Washington a pass here, simply because he doesn't look like Denzel at all. So it's not like he can capitalize on the resemblance. He's also a terrific actor. So that helps.
I’d love to hear your take on Noah Weiland’s music, some of it is a little rough to listen to. He might not be a nepo baby because he’s an independent artist on a budget though
Dude, you totally missed Simon Collins best album/band Sound of Contact, released in 2013. One of the greatest prog-rock albums ever written! It's in constant rotation on my Spotify list. Every song is a masterpiece of writing, performance and production.
ok after doing a little bit of research I see that Sound of Contact is a totally different band, yeah didn't know anything about that album/band.. looks like it was just a one off, i'll have to check it out
Collin's son should have just replaced his dad in Genesis or formed a separate cover band with remaining members Rutherford, Banks, Collins (even maybe with both brothers, one on drums and the other on vocals).
One of John Lennon’s kids, Sean Lennon, makes good music. These people just have connections and the luxury to focus on their music full time where as most of us don’t have either.
There's so many examples I feel like this could be a whole series of videos. I wonder if, much like with some athlete's kids (seems like there's a fair amount in basketball and wrestling), a big part is just growing up around the biz, and having lots of free time to pursue it if they want to. Anyway, not rock related, but I have two examples (I think fairly well known?) that spring to my mind. First is LMFAO - the two members are son and grandson of Barry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records. Going back to 1984, secondly there is Rockwell, who had the hit "Somebody's Watching Me", with Michael Jackson as a backup singer. He's the son of... Barry Gordy, the founder of Motown Records. I actually bought the Rockwell cassette way back when as a kid and I liked it, but I was also a dumb kid. I really enjoyed the song "Obscene Phone Caller", thought "Knife" was okay, didn't know what to think of the cover of the Beatles' "Taxman" and I forget the rest of it!
thanks, yeah those are def some good examples, I wish I had remembered LMFAO, I would have included them, make the list a bit more diverse than just rock
I think you gotta kinda salute what Slipknots bastards have done in that it takes a lot of effort and discipline to achieve and perform music of that genre….but biggest take away from this for me is a nice reminder of what a genuine bad ass Phil Collin’s is….on a kit or the mic….
Imma be real slipknot and vended are 2 different bands. That's all you got about Simon and griffin are sons of slipknot, but that's it. there musically not like slipknot. Different themes and lyric compositions to each other.
Slash's son was in a a couple of shitty bands including one with Scott Weiland's son but he recently joined Return to Dust as their drummer and they are a really good modern grunge band. I dont know if he's a good drummer or not but I think he just wants to hang in the background and not have it be all about him which is a reason why he's playing drums and not guitars.
The one with Lars's kids I think is really good. Its like 2000s indie garage rock but the good kind. The one with Hetfield's kid is basically a Corrosion of Conformity-esque sludgy doomy kind of band if you like that stuff. Neither sounds like Metallica or thrash metal.
i looked into it and i came to the conclusion that I mainly wanted to focus on the kids who did vocals in addition to playing an instrument. Since James's kid only played drums in the band, it didn't strike me as very interesting. As far as Lars's kids, I didn't know they were in an official band, I thought they just did a few performances covering songs.
Musical talent inherited... Innovation isnt...Julian Lennon not bad..Liza manneli the only real exception. Not counting the Bach family Dynasty of almost 300 years!
The practice of nepotism is only semi-less annoying when the kids don't sound like their parents. Most of these are a complete redundancy and unnecessary. Also, Mammoth was Van Halen's first band name before calling it Van Halen.

I saw a tv attack piece on Phil Collins around 1999 (around Tarzan press tour), which was all about Simon complaining about how his dad doesn't support him enough dispite inheriting all Phil's musical talent. I feel it didn't really help his career.
damn i'd like to see that
Stan Kubrick's grandson was the singer and guitarist for a metal band.
Nancy Sinatra has done some incredible work, especially with Lee Hazelwood
I LOVE Lee Hazelwood.
I love The Smiths and Unsolved Mysteries pictures in the back. Nice touch.
Also Phil Collins' other son Nic is a hell of a drummer, he managed a pretty good rendition of Avenged Sevenfold's almost easy
Simon must be bummed because his sister, Lily, is a HUGE actress, and his brother Nic has been drumming for a lot of big bands.
and lilly is super hot lol
Wolfgang has a couple decent songs but Distance is absolutely amazing. Especially with that music video to accompany it
Is Jeff Buckley going too far back for your demographic? And is it he a nepo baby if he met his father only once and in many ways made a bigger impression on the world?
Jeff is definitely a lot more of a commercial success than his father, and was the poster boy for 90's alternative sounds. I can't name a single song Buckley Snr has made.
Tim Buckley has some great tracks; ‘I Must Have Been Blind’ is my favourite. Very jazz inflected folk.
I've seen both of Bob Marley's sons perform, they were alright but there was one occasion that felt kind of jarring where one of them covered One Love, and then followed it up by his own song singing about how dangerous he is. Conflicted messaging really.
wao that's kinda fucked lol
Had no idea about any of these , probably for good reason haha good video and topic man
Thanks for the lunch break entertainment.
Vended AKA Slip Jr
Slipnot, they sound pretty good though, never listened to them except here. They have a legit sound even if it emulates what came before. I'll give them a listen sometime in the future. Must be tough to actually be good, and still have that nepo reputation, it automatically changes the perception sadly.
Vended is a band that just pissed me off. It's a Slipknot cover band that just got big due to it's family members. There are so many cool modern metal bands that don't even have a fraction of their fame, but are actually original
100% agree, these kids grow up with wealth and networking with industry leaders.. super unfair advantage
Yes Josh, I am indeed happy about the pop filter. Good boy!
thank you, thank you
Phil Collin's other song, Nic was the drummer for the final Genesis tour and now has his own band with the son of Steve Lukather, (guitarist/vocalist of Toto)
Nick is a killer drummer .. crazy how fast he caught on
"The youth has really fuckin' dropped the ball in the innovation front when it comes to rock n roll these days"
Yeah, I have to agree.
Good video.
Plays all the instruments and sings? Well, I'm impressed. 😮
What about some about some really good examples of nepo baby music? Beck, The Strokes, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart are a few good examples.
😂 🐯🤙Another perhaps best example of worst case of nepotism gone bad in the music industry, Miley 'Smiley Achy Breaky' Cyrus!
oh, good example!
@@Spitfirethedragon that's probably a good thing
Father Luis Alberto Spinetta

The recent Ultra Q album is pretty good. It leans more to a pop punk sound of their previous band, MT. Eddy. Hell, the album title is "Empty Eddy"
Wolfgang appears to be turning into Hurley from _Lost._
Also, Billie Joe Armstrong's other son Joey was the drummer for SWMRS but... his career's kinda dead now.
yeah i was thining about talking about him but the younger son seemed more interesting since he was still actively doing music and sang
It seems like the Slipknot kids are more excited about being Slipknot nowadays, Clown is more interested in Minecraft 😂
As I recall spider had a band before rob.
Spyder is Rob’s younger brother
I dont know what his work is like, but Dr. Phil has a musician son he talks about on his show sometimes named Jordan McGraw. Apparently hes friends with the Jonas Brothers and has toured with them. He was a guitarist for a band called Stars in Stereo, then formed a band called Hundred Handed...you know its successful because it doesnt even have a Wikipedia article.
haha yeah Hugh Hefner's widow dated him for a while and said he was a little mama's boy nepo baby, he's a weirdo.
Of course Max's son is in Soulfly with him and he had another band, Go Ahead And Die, with one of his other sons.
I always wondered how Mark Ronson got all those features on the Uptown Funk album. I gotta say though, I really dig that album. Daffodils with Kevin Parker is awesome.
oh im def not taking away from his abilities the dude clearly knows what he's doing
I Swear you where going to mention Bono's Kid from Inhaler, A deeply Average Indie Band.
oh damn I missed one!
@@DancingwithGhostsBono’s son is off limits. He’s freaking adorable and can write a killer pop song
This has nothing to do with music, but sofia coppola is a fantastic director. Great nepo artist
James and Lars's sons have a band together.
i wasnt able to find much info about their band
@@DancingwithGhosts sorry, James son has a band called Bastardane, and Lars 2 sons are in a band together called Taipei Houston
my name Wolfie, full name The Wolf Man Cat
Vended is actually a great band though just my opinion! But you have a good point on corporate music greed . Alot of famous artist are having there kids do the same thing as them ! Guess these musicians are having some family business going on here ?
Cool! Now do Jakob Dylan. With "The Wall Flowers"
For the longest time, I thought the indie artist Lorde, was Madonna’s daughter 😂
haha as far as i know Lorde had no industry connections but anytime someone makes it big at 16 years old i always be looking at them sideways
@@DancingwithGhostsit was her name that tripped me up, because Madonna’s daughter is named Lourdes 😂
James fits with the whole nepobaby vibe. He has a serious lack of personality and his output is very slow.
What's up with the youth ?
Sting's son is an individual, unless he bifurcated.
Got to check put Rise To Remain. Singer is Bruce Dickonson of Iron Maiden's son. They are more of a metalcore band though and soukd nobing like iron maiden
No mention of Wilson Philips? ;-)
Also, there's Jenni Muldaur, daughter Maria Muldaur of Midnight at the Oasis fame. She put out an album that's, not great, but still enjoyable. Not quite country, but leaning that way.
Mammoth was also the name of Van Halen before they changed their name to... well, you know.
The only Nepo Baby that mattered: Julian Lennon.
Dude, you totally missed Simon Collins best album/band Sound of Contact, released in 2013. One of the greatest prog-rock albums ever written! It's in constant rotation on my Spotify list. Every song is a masterpiece of writing, performance and production.
ok after doing a little bit of research I see that Sound of Contact is a totally different band, yeah didn't know anything about that album/band.. looks like it was just a one off, i'll have to check it out
@@DancingwithGhosts Well, Collins left and I think they had one other album without him. Now he is an a band called Emolecule
Collin's son should have just replaced his dad in Genesis or formed a separate cover band with remaining members Rutherford, Banks, Collins (even maybe with both brothers, one on drums and the other on vocals).
I don't think Simon can sing as high as Phil but that would have been an interesting choice
I posted a link of Amy Osborne on my Myspace page (a long time ago). I thought she would be the next big rock diva.😐🎶
haha so old they were around when Myspace was still a thing
1:10 Yes, thank you 😂
Forgotten Austin dickinson son of Bruce Dickinson of IRON MAIDEN
One of John Lennon’s kids, Sean Lennon, makes good music.
These people just have connections and the luxury to focus on their music full time where as most of us don’t have either.
Julian >>> Sean
Yet Julian has the hits.
Julian Ness and his Love Crimes sounds like Social Distortion without the same substance.
Amy osborne is pretty hot she has the same facial structure as her mom so sharon was probably hot when she was younger too
The Strokes? Althought their parents are not musicians just super rich 😂
oh yeah that's right, i remember hearing about that.. yet they dressed like they were crust punks lol
WVH is def the king of this group
I think you gotta kinda salute what Slipknots bastards have done in that it takes a lot of effort and discipline to achieve and perform music of that genre….but biggest take away from this for me is a nice reminder of what a genuine bad ass Phil Collin’s is….on a kit or the mic….
i laughed my ass off at "Slipknot's bastards" bahahaha that was good
Imma be real slipknot and vended are 2 different bands.
I dont know if he's a good drummer or not but I think he just wants to hang in the background and not have it be all about him which is a reason why he's playing drums and not guitars.
hmm .. that's cool i suppose
surpsiesed you didn't mention bastardane, who's drummer is castor hetfield.
or that group with layne and miles ulrich in it.
Mammoth was Van Halen's original name. He's biting off his dad.
cool subject matter
Musical talent inherited... Innovation isnt...Julian Lennon not bad..Liza manneli the only real exception. Not counting the Bach family Dynasty of almost 300 years!
Nobody does a major tour with P.O.D. they are not very famous anymore
Jinjer picking up some heat though
The practice of nepotism is only semi-less annoying when the kids don't sound like their parents. Most of these are a complete redundancy and unnecessary. Also, Mammoth was Van Halen's first band name before calling it Van Halen.
It’s really weird looking at an attractive woman with a resemblance to Ozzy Osbourne you can almost feel more than see.
well put, although i'd have to say she takes more after Sharon, still stunningly gorgeous though
Sean Lennon son of John Lennon. I have no idea about the quality of his music.
His music isn’t bad tbh. Julian’s though, I only know of Too Late for Goodbyes, only song I know of him because it was in Grand Theft Auto V
Speaking of Foreigner check out a project called Hugo's Voyage melodic rock old school... Got the recommendation from another channel rock news or something, glad he mentioned them... Kinda sounds like Van Halen... Music you don't hear often anymore out there
