Got the Dollar Tree one but it is way brighter than my old Fiskars light box, which was nice at first but it was too bright after using it for a bit. Wondered about harmful effects on eyesight from the LED.

I have a Dollar Tree and a Cricket BrightPad. First, the Dollar Tree one scratches really easily and maybe I missed it, but they both have varying light levels. Also, the Cricket is $59.99.

I bet you could easily tape the translucent cutting mats, that dollar tree sells, to the top of it, like a screen protector.

The comparison wasn't quite "fair" with the beginning vinyls, because two different colors were used. Yellow is typically more transparent (whether vinyl or acrylic or whatnot) and purple is quite dark (but sometimes also somewhat transparent.)
Furthermore, vinyl is generally more opaque and thicker than regular paper and tracing paper. So this wasn't really a fair assessment of the items' abilities by using an atypical "paper."
I'd be willing to bet these do quite well with other paper typically used for tracing.

We agree! If the goal of your light pad purchase is tracing, we’re sure the results would be different. We were just reviewing their effectiveness for this specific application.

well,,comparing 5 dollar pads to 125 dollar pads is kinda kooky,,
