Most of these little APU game boxes are the same. They're cool af, but then when I go to the store page, I'm put off by the price. Why would anyone pay over $700 for this when you can build or price a system with discrete graphics for that much? This needs to be like $400.

Maybe not half the price, but i recently priced up a few decent Ryzen 5, Micro ATX w/GPU combos for about two thirds the price and 1080p Ultra performance. I find it hard to get excited about anything that can only do 1080p/low tbh despite the impressive advancements.

they can't. there's patent issues for the back buttons and it's doubtful they'd bring out a steam controller that doesn't have the same layout as the deck.
Gotta ask, why? I got one bundled with the Steam Link, and gotta say, both were terrible. Steam Link was a pain to use, had (and still has) all sorts of issues that make it not worth using, and the controller was nearly (though not quite) as much of a train wreck. The touch pads with the weird haptic feedback stuff, that also failed to feel effective as a mouse replacement, so they may as well have just been standard thumbsticks, the strange feel of the paddles on the back, strange shape that may have helped with access to the touchpads but made it awkward to hold, I just don't see why anyone would want them back. If they just made a controller in the style of the Steam Deck I'd happily take it, as most issues are fixed and the touchpads don't replace important components, but the original Steam Controller is one of the worst controllers I've ever had the displeasure of using.

Imagine Steam OS adding support for streaming apps so you could have an xbox+androidTV/AppleTV like experience once SteamOS is officially launched on non steam hardware, or heck, the steamdeck isnt that much more expensive than a Shield TV pro and its way more powerful. I have been upset for a long time with the performance of various TV boxes, even on my 1080p TV in my kitchen, my Shield Pro is constantly crashing or needing to be restarted and doesnt stream well(when the PC next to it can stream from the same gaming PC in my basement just fine, with all 3 wired to the same switch) Imagine getting the same functionality, but with a 7640u 16GB of LPDDR5, and a 256GB SSD and a slot to add more. That would be a great little HTPC for not much more than a Shield Pro, but way more performance, and a much larger game library.
Steam OS should be more efficient, but the problem is that its games have to go through a translation layer.
