I have a SM7B for streaming but also got 2 podmics for podcasting and they are fantastic. There is a difference in quality for sure but not a $300 difference. Also with some adjustments they are near indistinguishable to anyone who isn't an audiophile. Great mic and with this price point we're only gonna get better mics that try to compete at a similar cost.

At 12:20ish you lose me. You basically say that a mic looking good on stream is just as important as sound quality. So in this little box embedded in my gameplay, my mic needs to look good. Well, any mic I choose looks better than I do but I have serious doubts that people are looking lovingly or hatefully at the way my mic looks. I chose a Samson Q2U because it 1. Sounds pretty good. 2. Has USB interface to start, and 3. Allows me to upgrade to XLR for better sound, without having to buy a brand new microphone. Put it on an adjustable boom, put it in a shock mount, put the wind screen on it, and it looks perfectly acceptable for the tiny little display I appear in while gaming. But I only have one regular viewer and they don't seem to mind the way my mic looks since they keep coming back, but maybe you are right. Maybe if my mic looked better I've have more viewers...naw.

Keep in mind much more aggressive/careful EQing will mask the sm7b differences greatly. I've worked with 7Bs, 57s, etc and after a heavy eq treatment of sub, low mid tailoring and high end freq cuts it's difficult to distinguish. make your large, tight cuts at 500ish and 600, boost your 80-110, pull back on your 200-250 and it all starts running together after the compression is finalized. keep those Qs narrow and these mics come alive.

the behringer xm8500 is also a good dynamic mic but it happens to only be $30, it does sound a little cheaper but its $70 less, it has a warmer sound than most mics but still a very solid mic. or the samson Q2u for $44~. or if you want to get closer to the $100 mark, go for the Shure sm58 for around $85 with comparable sound to the sm7b, the sm58 is less flat sounding but still has the 7b type sound. and i can personally vouch for the sound of the xm8500 for spoken word and such after using it for nearly a year. look for podcastage's review of the above i you want to hear em for yourself

The gate on the Podmic was too aggressive compared to the other microphones. Makes the whole test moot. Because all 3 microphones have different output levels, compression and gate should have been turned off to get a true comparison.

Maybe it's just me, but I think you sounded like an angel with that SM7B compared to the other ones. Granted, most of your audience are youngsters on a budget, so I see the point of the video. behringer xm8500 microphone ($23) with a Focusrite Scarlett Solo USB audio interface ($109). Or a Behringer UM2 Audio Interface ($48). Everybody talks about the Shure SM7B but then act like they wont need a cloudlifter or fethead to push it. A sm58 also.. Its hard to push. A go xlr mini is over rated and over priced. Also the majority of people who get a streaming setup are more than likely going to be on discord or using obs to record or stream. Discord uses its own codec, and OBS has crap tons of audio eq making that $400 mic sound just like a $20 mic. So in the end run whats the difference? For a simple stream you dont need a $100 mic. You just need a decent XLR dynamic mic and a usb audio interface.

If you are a streamer, people just want to hear your voice, they dont need to hear every nuance of your voice. Just the words. Any Dynamic mic 100 bucks or less will do the job splendidly, even for professional streamers. Even shroud himself would be fine with a podmic.

My favorite thing about this review is that Harris is the ONLY person to compare the SM7B and PodMic where he tries to make the PodMic sound like the SM7B. Literally EVERY other review compares them out of the box then says "Clearly the SM7B is better" which isn't true. If you can spend 1/4th the money and make it sound almost identical through EQ... Clearly the PodMic is better. It's just not better out of the box and plugging it in without any processing. But IMO that doesn't justify an extra $300
This is especially true due to the fact that anyone seeking great audio ALWAYS uses some sort of processing. Comparing them without any processing and saying one is better because it sounds better out of the box is just nonsense

so if I have an AT2020 condenser mic, would this still be an "upgrade" or is it negligible? I feel as though that the isolation of a dynamic mic would get a leg up over my at2020 since it is pretty sensitive. Yes, this mic is less rich than most of the ones you tested it against. But you also (which MOST reviewers do not) is show that with little to no adjustment you can make it (and almost any mic) sound the same as any other mic (as long as it isn't a total crap mic to begin with). When it comes to mics it really comes to a minimum base quality, and then how the USER tweaks their setup and settings to best suit them. The end user, if the adjustments are made, will not be able to tell the difference between mics.... less so if they are not presented with direct comparisons... which in the real world NEVER happens. ;) Good review, though I am not a gamer. What you did, and pointed out, can be applied to almost any mic on the market over a base quality level.

The SM7B is an industry standard for good reason, and for it's price it should sound better than a $ 100 mic. The Rode POD for $ 100 is a good investment, but not in the same league as the SM7B or EV RE 20. BTW: I use a Samson G TRack Pro and could not be happier with it as my everyday mic for Skype, Zoom calls as well as voice overs. It has a lot of vocal presence across a full frequency spectrum, and also has 3 selectable polar patterns. The cardioid pattern is excellent at rejecting keyboard sounds with a very small gate. I highly recommend it. FWIW: I will also be testing the Samson CL8a (XLR condenser) within the next few days to see how it compares to the G Track Pro. Good video!

Your audio tests were a bit too short to judge by (I think). It might have been that you have more presence at the start of your sentences and that’s why the more expensive one had more presence.

    • @cubematrixstudio7605
      @cubematrixstudio7605 5 лет назад

You may need better headphones. Presence doesn't fade out, the same lack of presence is throughout from star to finish. Harris does a great job controlling plosives and natural voice-levels, the lack of presence isn't due to dwindling power or volume in his voice, but a technical bandwidth-response issue native to the mic.

  • @fieldstonestudios

Something people should know when watching this, if you buy this mic it will not sound the same. Harris used compression which every compressor not only affects dynamics but they also have tonal characteristics to them that alter the sound of their source. And every compressor sounds different so just adding a random compressor won't yield the same effect. Same thing with eq. Not all eq's are built the same so just copying the same settings used in this video with a different plugin won't yield the same results.

  • @literofcola6628

The MD421 is a fantastic mic, many a time overlooked due to a lack in their advertising. They base sales on a great trajectory of reputation.
It's got a bandwidth response that gives the pod-caster exactly what he needs, good -80Hz roll-off and a handy upper frequency boost to liven the voice and give it «air» and pretense.

Sure, my room acoustics could use some work but I want to make sure I’m not missing something here. (Audio isn’t my thing). Ive followed your go XLR video every step of the way.
My mic is really quiet compared to others I’ve heard. I have to turn the gain up to like 45-50db when following the first step of your video. Is that normal for most mics? I can turn the gain up and get the mic to the volume I want, but it seems “too hot” to me. I’ve also got the mic fader on the GOXLR turned up all the way.
I followed every other step that involves the GoXLR mini in your setup video and just cannot seem to get that radio smooth voice you achieve and that I’ve seen others achieve with the same gear. Any help from anyone would be appreciated

I am curious if you have made a video or if you are planning on it and if not if you could make one about how easy or difficult it is and what programs to use to add those EQs into your stream.
I am completely novice when it comes to audio tech and software, so a lot of that is almost completely foreign to me, and I'm guessing others.
Does adding a software or equs to your live streams also add any kind of audio delay through that processing or anything like that where your audio will be de-synched from your video?

I have been using the blue yeti for over a decade now and my main problem with it, and many other mics is that my voice reverberates too much. This causes your ears to visically hurt after a while because its just too boomy and agressive. I dont have a particularly deep voice. But my voice is like trying to do the grudge noise, you know the uhhhhhhhhhhh sound but deeply. My voice does this constantly and in mics at youtubes -14 LUFS it sounds horrendous! I have tried EQing the absolute crap out of them but in order to get rid of the reverberation in the lows and mids in my voice I have to cut the 80-100hz by -12db but then I sound too tinny and I have really bad SSSSSS sounds naturally too. Overall very dissapointing as my voice in real life isnt nearly as grating. The podmic vs the sm7b for me sounded much clearer and had less boom. Not as clear as a condensor mic but I cant record in a whisper room so I need the background reduction/rejection of a dynamic mic. The biggest thing that is unfortunate for the average person is that EQing is EXTREMELY important. If I were to get an xlr setup with the sm7b I would have to cut out the lows and mids signifigantly more than the podmic. I think after 10 years I will finally upgrade to an XLR setup for better access to live monitoring settings and that dynamic mic background sound rejection. The blue yeti, that I got used over 10 years ago has served me well but has always been too sensitive even with the gain and volume set to 0. This caused it to have a high noise floor in a room that is under 30DB and thats with my computer running 3 feet away from the mic. Now I do plan on building a studio in my room for recording but I have to be able to EQ my voice properly so its not so grating on the ears. I really appreaciate the video as I have been scouring the web trying to decide on a new mic, I tried the samson q2u and it had a bad noise floor and poor background rejection and overall sounded muddy. I was actually able to get better results out of my yeti with EQ than I could with the Q2U. SO off to amazon I go to purchase my new gear! Hopefully I wont have to return this one!
