Amazing video! I’m a sound engineer, have more than 50 microphones and I’ve been recording live music, podcast, documentary, interviews, voices overs, studio music, etc etc for more than 9 years now and I could not have done such a great job explaining the basics about microphones in such fast and accurate way! You nailed all the basics. And also great shoutout to the Podcastage channel!
I think the new PodMic USB actually comes with access to Rode Connect, which is basically a fully digital version of the Rodecaster Pro II mixer. So if you like the sound of the PodMic and like the features of the Rodecaster, it’s kind of a perfect choice!
So instead of say, getting the Rode PodMic and an Audio Interface, I could get the PodMic USB and actually end up saving money since it may come with a digital version audio interface?

I'm actually looking for a USB shotgun (or pencil) mic, because I don't want to get into the whole XLR business, although the Elgato Wave XLR single knob does seem like a hassle proof solution, but it gets expensive very quickly when adding a decent XLR shotgun mic.. Also currently I can't (and don't want to) do a lot of sound treatment, but mostly I want a mic that's not in my face for two reasons: 1 - I use facetracking hardware and I want as little interference for it as possible and 2 - if I ever want to get back into streaming I'd like to have a clean(ish) camera angle (which is doable with my current mic and it works okay, but you know, flexibility and quality improvements). Currently it seems like my options are very limited and am curious to see how the RØDE VideoMic NTG and the Deity V-Mic D4 compare to one another (and how they hold up if there are other options out there). The main reason why I actually put down this comment is that in your suggestions/recommendations you went from XLR dynamic to XLR condenser and XLR shotgun to USB dynamic to USB condenser mic. Also I totally get I'm not the average user and am a bit weird, but I'd love to get your point of view on this

I bought the Rode PodMic because of this vid and man that was a MISTAKE! That mic picks up all my keyboard clicks and mouse movement (glass mousepad) no matter what. I spent over 7 hours trying to fine tune it with the wave XLR/wave link and it would not work. Noise gate couldnt even cut the noise and if it I pushed it too much my voice, which is 2 inches from the mic, would cut constantly. Not a good mic for stream setups where you plan to use a mechanic keyboard, clicky mouse, and a glass mousepad. I'm going to try the Shure MV7

Loving the content, keep up the informative vids! I used a YETI for ages but moved over to a GOXLR and Rode PodMic and been with that for years and won’t go back!
I currently use a Yeti X but will be upgrading to the Beacn Mic soon. Yeti is solid but, with kids it's challenging to keep out the background noise. I don't have the luxury of a closed space in this house so loud sounds trickle in sometimes. The Yeti is a really good mic for enclosed spaces.
For shotgun mics, if the Sennheiser MKH 416 is too expensive, I think the Sennheiser MKE 600 offers also great quality for about a quarter of the price.
what is the purpose of the heaphone jack given on the mic? should i connect my headphones in the 3.5mm jack on the mic or the headphone jack on my laptop while gaming and streaming?
Funny that the video is about different mics and their orientation, but in the "podcast" footage at 3:39 you can see the silhouette of the capsule of the mic and it's clearly side-address condencer spoken to from the top 😂
A good inexpensive USB Dynamic is the Presonus Revelator Dynamic. Similar to the Beacn mic it has on board processing, and headphone jacks, just no RGB. It was $100 the last I checked. You can go cheaper for USB and USB/XLR Dynamics and get the Fifine K688 and K687 (IIRC) they are sub $60/$70 they have servicable sound that with a little processing (either in OBS or EQAPO as they lack onboard processing and dedicated software) they can sound very solid (I use both of the Fifine mics in my current setup). If I were to recommend a USB Dynamic to a newish streamer it'd probaboly be the Presonus one as it is a lot easier to just setup and go
I unfortunately have a quiet voice, and for the life of me cannot figure out what would be a good choice. I've tried the SM7B - cloudlifter - focusrite. but to get my voice to normal levels you also hear window fan noise even though it's about 8 feet away. I've also had a Fifine mic that was decent as well overall if you like directional audio. Edit: Forgot to add one benefit of the customization on XLR mics, you can put them through a physical mixer and use the 3.5mm mic-out port from mixer to computer mic jack. In case you needed an extra USB port to be free for something else.
I myself bought the Rode NT1-A some time ago, as it is quite popular in Germany, but I also read that many people prefer the NT1, which is why I ended up comparing the two plus a few more (Baby Bottle, Pure 440, King Bee II, MK4) and to be honest, none of them really convinced me, or rather I considered the sound superior to that of the NT1-A 🤔 However, I also have to say that I didn't have the best headphones at the time, nor did the mics was EQed (do you write that so? 👀) 😅 Anyway, a few days ago I bought the Wave 3 with accessories quite cheaply on Ebay, simply because I was curious about how it sounds, especially compared to an XLR mic, and it's on a par with the NT1-A, if not superior, I still have to order new 770 Pros and then I can really compare the two, but what I already notice positively is that I can move the Wave 3 much closer to me, simply because it doesn't have such a huge pop filter like the Rode xD and that the S sounds are nowhere near as sharp ^^ By the way, what kind of Beach microphone arm is this, I can't find anything about it on the internet and would like to see if there is a comparison to the Elgato 😮
My partner uses a Rode NT1 for vocals (mostly). Heard that was a pretty good condenser mic. I personally purchased the Rode Podmic and im pretty happy with it for the price i paid (certainly didn't want to spend $40+ on the over-hyped sm7b for streaming/chat programs)
they just drop their 5th generation with usbc if anyone doesnt wanna use an XLR. and the fact that you wont lose quality is kinda mindblowing with usb. def my number 1 usb mic atm
I specifically searched for a video about microphones from you and it's funny that the video about microphones is the one where I'm not a huge fan of how the audio sounds
My Podmic with XLR and Scarlet 212 Works fairly well. I have a baritone to base voice and other mics get pretty jammed up when I use them. The only annoying thing is you got to unplug the Scarlet 212 once in awhile or the microphone gets quiet for some weird reason
Hey Senpai been watching your channel for a few years now and just wanted to ask I bought a SAMSON G-TRACK PRO a while back and I think its a decent microphone but IDK if id want to upgrade it or keep it, could you maybe get one from someone and let me and the rest of your subscribers know what you're thoughts are on the microphone, Thank you PEACE
Earthworks has some great microphones as well. The Earthworks Ethos is $399, but you don't need any additional hardware to boost the gain (such as the SM7B). Any decent interface will have phantom power and that's all it needs. Very warm tone. I'm surprised you haven't done a video on these yet Senpai!
I have a vtuber channel on RUclips and Twitch and will soon be adding Facebook to that I will be multi-streaming to them soon too, the mic I have is the Elgato Wave 3 there are often other noises near by that sometimes are and sometimes aren't heard in my streams and edited videos that I post to RUclips. What mic would you recommend for me or is the Elgato Wave 3 good enough?
I loved the beacn create for having a vod channel and the interface it had but the software kept crashing or freezing on me so I had to go with the wave software on the stream deck+. I really feel like I'm under utilizing the stream deck and hoping for too much from the wave link software.
I love the Wave 3 so much I bought a second one for my Gunpla twitch channel so I wouldn't have to disconnect between PCs I'm also looking for a good shotgun or dynamic mic to add an ASMR feature for clipping and assembling the plastic parts off the runners
Good cheap dynamic mic that I just picked up and started using for under $100 CAD that is usb and xlr is the Samson Q2U podcast mic. Works amazing as I have clicking noises that would get picked up easily with a condenser mic but not this one. And the sound quality is a lot better
I'm still putting along with my Elgato Wave 1 (yes, not even the 3 :D ), but it works for me :) Only wish I'd waited on the new Stream Deck. I would love to have the dials :D
How does the wave 3 sound in an untreated room? I would love a usb elgato mic, but am concerned about not getting a dynamic mic like my old rode podcaster.
Hey i have a question that i havent been able to find anywhere at all. Im picking up streaming...obviously, currently i have the blue yeti x. My issue is that i clip my audio all the time because i go from talking loud to getting super into the game...or yelling. This sucks because most of the time this is when stuff is happening and it ruins my twitch clips and the funny moments that is happening on stream. Do you have any mic recommendations/audio fixes for this.
does the rode nt1 work as a cool microphone for streaming? they come in colors and that is what is drawing me in, plus the sm7db has some white noise while condensor just has natural room noise which isnt white noise that i like
I wonder how cheap mic's from companies that aren't necessarily audio brands like Mozos, Fifine or Endorfy compare to more well known mic's. You can get whole set with a boom arm, a shock mount, a pop filter and a mic ofc ;p for like 50-70 bucks, i can see many streamers using them and they sound pretty ok, i would say that the position of the mic and how well the room is treated affect the quality of the audio more than actual difference in quality between let's say Mozos 700pro and Blue Yeti and Yeti is about 3 times more expensive (and with this mozos you get a whole kit, not just a mic). I know that it's a good practice to buy audio products from actual audio related brands, but i feel like for a beginner or an amateur cheap alternatives are good enough. Especially when for the price of PSA1 boom arm alone you can buy two full sets of Mozos or Fifine xD Just asking, i'm a noob ;p
I do not like seeing the Mic in the frame .. Rode Go II wireless mic with Rode with a rode Lavalier II ... no one complains ... do you ever use them. are there other mics that you can use and keep them out of the frame ... with put using a boom arm?
i use the elgato wave xlr and Fifine k688 I tried out the shure sm7b but didnt like pushing so much gain . my voice sounds g reat on both and i have a good bang for my buck mic by choosing the fifine.
Looking forward to buying a mic this Boxing Day. Not entry level, but not super professional just a good mic in the middle with easy to use software integration.
I'm going to start with video and streaming, but I'm not sure which mic I should choose. Thinking of Røde Podmic or Elgato Wave DX Dynamic since they are most available where I live, but not sure which one. Someone here which have any opinions on which one I should choose?

Sunk cost fallacy. After a certain point we purchase gear to say what we own. Like buying $400 worth of A5 waygu to make it in a microwave.
Funny that the video is about different mics and their orientation, but in the "podcast" footage at 3:39 you can see the silhouette of the capsule of the mic and it's clearly side-address condencer spoken to from the top 😂
Recently bought the Maono PD200X for around $65. Absolutely love it! And it has a very straightforward mixing software included!
This is the mic im looking at as a possible next mic
I love mine. It works wonderfully!
I use Shure 7B but I started with a Samsun g-trek pro. Love that mic and fantastic sound
In case you needed an extra USB port to be free for something else.
okay ya got me i connected my twitch to sizzle awesome, processing my first VOD now
SM57 here. Rocking it old school.
YEAH!
rode or deity wireless mics and Sennheiser Professional MKE 600. i use the Sennheiser below me, out of frame, works great!
I myself bought the Rode NT1-A some time ago, as it is quite popular in Germany, but I also read that many people prefer the NT1, which is why I ended up comparing the two plus a few more (Baby Bottle, Pure 440, King Bee II, MK4) and to be honest, none of them really convinced me, or rather I considered the sound superior to that of the NT1-A 🤔
However, I also have to say that I didn't have the best headphones at the time, nor did the mics was EQed (do you write that so? 👀) 😅
Anyway, a few days ago I bought the Wave 3 with accessories quite cheaply on Ebay, simply because I was curious about how it sounds, especially compared to an XLR mic, and it's on a par with the NT1-A, if not superior, I still have to order new 770 Pros and then I can really compare the two, but what I already notice positively is that I can move the Wave 3 much closer to me, simply because it doesn't have such a huge pop filter like the Rode xD and that the S sounds are nowhere near as sharp ^^
By the way, what kind of Beach microphone arm is this, I can't find anything about it on the internet and would like to see if there is a comparison to the Elgato 😮
i like how he tried to make the main part under 5m,failed, but it was still very usefull.
Lewitt LCT 440 Pure has been my favorite mic by far. It may be a condenser mic, but damn it’s nice.
It also has a built-in pop filter and as a front address mic it's good at tuning out my PC Tower noise and the rest of the noise from my neighbor's
nice video. it's a lot of money needing a full setup, but maybe worth it.
I use a Shure MV7 with a Wave XLR, and I'm pretty happy with it.
Honestly just bought one. Logitech Blue Sona. And it is awesome
I'm surprised you haven't done a video on these yet Senpai!
xlr cables can hold 48v for phantom power, isnt that enough to run a 5v LED?
9:26 how is that a question?
Hey! This is what I asked you to do months ago! Totally not a coincidence, definitely not a coincidence, ;) but I'm so happy!
Although there is no mixing software, my HyperX Duo Cast is pretty nice. I use the Steel Series Sonar mixer, and have had great results.
I USE THE BLUEBIRD SL, AND FULL SIZED GO XLR - I STREAM AND MAKE MUSIC SO ITS A GOOD COMBO FOR ME PERSONALLY
It doesn't have companion software but the Fifine AM8 is a $54 (sometimes $46) USB/XLR dynamic microphone that sounds pretty darn good for the price.
I grabbed the Beacn a little while back and love it!
I use the Shure MV7 it’s a great half way point when I need/want a usb mic for on the go and an xlr at home
I love my RODE XDM-100 USB Dynamic Mic, best mix of great sound and affordability for me.
Rode X? There is no Shure XDM-100
@@noxietechYes, sorry. Edited to correct that.
Bought the BEACN MIC and MIX ... still not getting EXACTLY how to dial it in 😮
I loved the beacn create for having a vod channel and the interface it had but the software kept crashing or freezing on me so I had to go with the wave software on the stream deck+.
I use the Shure SM 58 for streaming, as I've already owned it for BEatboxing, and people often tell me how good it sounds.
AT2040 USB? Shure also made the mv7 USB version now as well
Good cheap dynamic mic that I just picked up and started using for under $100 CAD that is usb and xlr is the Samson Q2U podcast mic.
I def think the Shure MV7 should get a shoutout. Especially since it is USB or XLR cable. Very versatile with really good sound for a good price.
Thanks for the vid. :) I've actually been looking at Fifine mics, just need to get some decent software to use with one of them.
does the rode nt1 work as a cool microphone for streaming? they come in colors and that is what is drawing me in, plus the sm7db has some white noise while condensor just has natural room noise which isnt white noise that i like
currently using Sennheiser profile usb mic, tbh, could just save a bit and get elgato wave that would sound the same.
"I'm terrible at doing things in five minutes..." Happy wife, happy life, bro. 🤗
Especially when for the price of PSA1 boom arm alone you can buy two full sets of Mozos or Fifine xD
Just asking, i'm a noob ;p
Love my at2020, was cheap and picks up a lot for a room mic. I wish sizzle did final fantasy 14.
I like my Samson Q2U over USB. Been using it for years.
I do not like seeing the Mic in the frame .. Rode Go II wireless mic with Rode with a rode Lavalier II ... no one complains ... do you ever use them. are there other mics that you can use and keep them out of the frame ... with put using a boom arm?
Harris, do you have any opinions on HyperX Quadcast or Quadcast S RGB?
"Condense this down"
That pun was 👌
i use the elgato wave xlr and Fifine k688 I tried out the shure sm7b but didnt like pushing so much gain . my voice sounds g reat on both and i have a good bang for my buck mic by choosing the fifine.
Looking forward to buying a mic this Boxing Day. Not entry level, but not super professional just a good mic in the middle with easy to use software integration.
What do you think about shure mic? Or any shure version?
Hi, can you advise on a good low-cost mic for gaming on a PS5 in a noisy room?
i think another great condenser xlr mic is the Lewitt Audio LCT 240 Pro
Great thoughts!
I'm going to start with video and streaming, but I'm not sure which mic I should choose.
Thinking of Røde Podmic or Elgato Wave DX Dynamic since they are most available where I live, but not sure which one.
Someone here which have any opinions on which one I should choose?
I’ve had the hyperx quad cast for quite some time. I’m in an untreated room for money reasons. My voice keeps cutting out a small bit and it’s something that kinda bothers me in my videos. There’s not much I can do in the software I’m assuming it would be settings in OBS? Thank you to any, and all who respond!
I’m about to upgrade my goxlr mini to a full go xlr and would love to find some help on a good profile for the rode podmic
