Hi for me par I have a 9.6 Coachmen 1996 sport and for winter the compartment for the propane tank which is inside the cold transpierced the metal and passed in the corridor between the door and the shower which was very cold while leaving the shower;) I made modifications like insulation of the compartments and made holes of ventilation which reduced the cost in heating and and in use of the system which gives me 1/3 of less in use during winter. I also removed my water heating system and replaced it with an instantaneous propane heating system with an s-shaped propane chimney and a 12v fan that expels the burned gas and prevents the cold from rising, since the outlet is lower than the system. No more problems with the water tank, which may fail and freeze. I also replaced my curtains with lined thermal curtains that keep the heat out in style. And finally two 12v fans to ventilate as needed and a good old duck tape high temperature trick in front of the furnace to deflect the thermostat fan which solved my temperature problem. Your Quebec colleague 😂
I'm in Winnipeg and my plan is to install a diesel heater right away, duct some of the heat into the basement and the rest into the living space then run it on low 24/7 all winter even when not in use. $40/week on diesel give or take and have the propane furnace as a backup. Fingers crossed lol 😆
Defiantly install the diesel heater.... It made a significant difference on my 2002 adventurer camper with single pane windows that is poorly insulated. at -7*c outside, it will keep the camper at +17*c on minimum heat setting. It will dry damp towels and keep the condensation off the windows. I have it set up to suck cold air from outside, heat it and pump it into the camper. I leave a top vent cracked at night to facilitate the exchange of air.
Just bought 400Ah's worth of self-heating Power Queen 12.8V LiFePo4 batteries for my 34 ft Class A motorhome. Still need to acquire all of the related components (3000W inverter/charger, DC-to-DC charger, controller, bus bars, switches/breakers/ wiring, etc.). Hoping to rig not one but TWO diesel heaters into the rig's plumbing and to fabri-cobble the required ducting to keep batteries, tanks and plumbing from freezing when ambient temps go below -20C and into minus-M.F. territory. Your temp sensors are a very good idea and will certainly be required for my set-up.
In my future rig I'm going to do that shrink window cling stuff that adds another air gap on the window. I don't like the reflectix method because I'd want as much light as possible in the winter during the day.
I’m not fond of cold weather and so don’t like SNOW. Better you should deal with that stuff. But, I like to watch snow and you or anyone else in the white stuff. Thanks for being there.
Aahhahah!!!! You seems to be very happy to see snow and lower TEMPERATURE.... good!!!! But ive benn ther and done that... i m heading to Arizona at the end of the month... AND i will be smile just like you when i see the Saguaro Cactus.... have good winter 😁😁
The camper layout is a great choice to build on. Try a 2nd layer of reflectix for the windows make the second cover the frame, dabs of caulk easy to connect and keep the edge that holds it in, I put a 2nd layer up by my headboard no condensation for me, cool to the touch at -30c. The door I put one layer between the screen it was dripping, then put a layer on the outside now the door is dry, I am going to cover the hinge outside with reflectix I realized that was a cold bridge to the inside. I may have commented on an older vid about the 3'x5' 170w rug heater I am using to heat the entire 28ft 5th, they have a 2' x 7.5' same btu would fit under your rug, A 12V 100A has a 7-hour run time. If you plan to go with woodstove the smallest rug heater 2'x3.25' 65w in that storage under the door outside might keep pipes/tanks warm when not using the furnace. Just more options and for the first time in 20 years a product that exceeded my expectations in performance, super safe, waterproof to the switch. I hope I can afford the 365w in the next few months for the main area overnight.
I have an idea about your thermostat issues, use a small USB powered fan to circulate the air inside. They draw a watt +/- and while they suck as fans (IMO), they do circulate the air to even out the temps. My fear of camping in winter is because I’ve been trapped by a winter snow, out of propane, then food when a weekend trip turned into a 9 day not-funday. Yes, I brought an extra propane tank, and a little extra food.
One winter tip I know you forgot to mention. When it is dumping snow, wipe off your solar panels several times a day, or get the gen running to charge the batteries!
I always smile, inside and out, when we get the first snowfall of the season. I'm in Southern Alberta, so I'm guessing we're celebrating the same flakes!😅 Stay happy, Kevin. 👍😎🇨🇦❄️🧦🎿
My best advice for uour windows is that plastic film that you use a hair dryer to shrink it , that will eliminate the drafts and you'll be surprised at how strong that thin film is . Its really easy to install and will provide clear view and no moisture will be present !
Great video, i love how made the camper your own, and better then it was stock, i just have a small pop up truck camper but am doing some of my own stuff to that as well! look forward to the next one!
You always make my evening enjoyable... You are very amazing. Even though you have a Northern Lite. I'm going to try full-timing in an Arctic Fox 1140 dry bath, and a Ford F-550 4x4 diesel. You are one of the most enjoyable people to watch.

Great video. I too am looking forward to winter. Why not get a cheapo infrared thermometer and test some of your assumptions. On sale this week at CT for 25 dollars.
I get the excitement for the first snowfall. I get it. I love this time of year. Hunting season. But serious question? Why the hell wouldn’t you be headed south soon? The cold will suck the life out of you. Theres all sorts of free beaches to camp on that’ll only cost a few hundred dollars worth of diesel to get to. Come back mid February, when the ski hills have lots of snow and the days are getting longer. And ski, sled, x country and ice fish till spring. AB is no place to live in a camper once December hits.
Best month for powder is January lol! It will be fun! 😂 sitting on a beach all day is great but trying to start your truck in -30 just makes me me feel alive and maybe a bit humbled, I like the struggle I guess 😂
I feel ya. I love keeping the fire stoked at home on a cold day. I guess it’s a similar thing. Hopefully we get a good snow year this year , the last few have been duds.
@KevinWaldsAdventures I got stuck in blizzard once, I had to wait in my truck. It was -2? I used 3 tealights and kept warm for an hour. Tealight candles put in a can can generate heat for up to two hours. Just an FYI
I did the same butcher job on sealing my bay doors. it's more a case of the seal remaining sticky and dirt always sticking to it. I've had better luck painting flex seal on those areas.
well... if you stay on the island you can prep for around -1 or -2 lol. usually once per winter for a week or 2 it might go as low as -15 but thats not very often.
I've got a diesel heater, I'm not sure if I want to hook it up. I've seen they have issues. Kind of a toss up. Diesel is way more efficient, propane is more reliable.
they use quite a bit of power starting up 8-10 amps but after that not too bad. Most propane furnaces use so much electricity they kill batteries overnight
Great info. Never had any luck with the reflectix on the windows. Just makes a big ice cube on my single pane windows. I don’t worry about insulation much at all anymore since it usually only causes mold if not completely done properly. In my opinion it’s best to just buy more furnace oil or diesel and keep it a comfortable temperature with air circulation. Maybe cost me a couple hundred more a year but hey if the ladies are cold there’s always my camper van. Lol
try putting that refectix stuff on the outside of your window! it works on the outside REALLY well! but inside it doesnt it creates moisture and mold..
I purchased an arctic sleeping bag 15 years ago for $500. Best investment I ever made. I spent three days in my sleeping bag once. It’s still in excellent condition. It’s reckless and an unnecessary risk not to have such a sleeping bag. (i’m old now…., I talk to everybody the same way I would my children/grandchildren).
Hey Kevin it looks like you’ve got your bases as far as keeping warm this winter and living a rewarding lifestyle. One thing that’s coming around and that’s is what are the personal income tax implications. Since you have no fixed address you have the opportunity to pick a province that has the best income tax structure. I’m not an accountant or involved in that. Benefits of being an Alberta Resident is free healthcare and a pretty good tax structure. I suppose as long as you are just visiting BC you could still technically be an Alberta Resident and win financially too. Anyways just something to think about. Enjoy living free!
I have an address I use in Alberta for legal stuff and I was considering for insurance reasons to use bc but I was able to find really good insurance for the camper in Alberta so I will continue having my address in Alberta, also I really don’t want to go through an out of province inspection lol
Snow ❄️ bees! 🐝 😂🤣. U did some pretty crafty work there. We will have to meet up next summer for a nite, you'll find it interesting how a 2022 NL has changed from yours. I don't winter camp, but i put an extra weather sealant trim around my screen door, n i cut out plexi glass n popped it into all the screened sections on the screen door. Do see a difference on say a cold wind blowing drafty day. (I made a screen door i mount n hang inside above the doorway, for those nice in n out warm days, easily removable when weather is cooler. ) So yup the plexi is removable but y remove it? Lol. 🍻
Thats a good idea hanging one. You mean it just slides over the doorway area not actually attached right? I was thinking of doing something for my class c n well whenever I get my trufk camper too. 😊
Get a heat banket ot a heat line n plug it in. You can tape them down the lines or on the bottom of your tanks. Ppl use them for lines they access water from the lakes or if they have storage water containers outside to have water on the property. Those go inside tho and run along the lines as well attached. Ive also seen bowls with cords that plug in for animals. Never new they made them.
Air rises in them so u can't get propane when they're cold. Some ppl lay them on the side. I'm not sure I'd wanna do that. But I am curious that oil heater keeps u warm. I used ro have one. They are cheap to buy but id like to leave n go in my class c. However I'm not sure that would keep me warm as I did use a reg small heater u plug in once and it did ok but was still cold whenni got out of bed. I wasn't cold thru the night at all just the air and floor was cold. Not sure I trust my furnace or water heater as it's a 89 class c. I want to out a tiny grizzly in it as well n one of those diesel heaters. But if the diesel quits I'll need a back up. I'm sure I'd be fine and I heard if u run them on full alot it'll do ok its ehen u run them on low u have issues. And the name brand matters too. Vanity vanlife chrome is now selling the good ones. Id also like to have some sort of xtrw insulation n redo my whole rig. Have a power box incase I gotta plug one in or get a smaller generator like u have as mine was always too bug heavy hard to pull some days for me at night if it ran out of gas. I hate the dark n it usually goes 10 plus hrs but if I fill it too early n start it I end up having to start it just at dark. But it was loud ppl said more rhan anything. I need it in summer for ac when it's real hot. But ppl have shut it off on me. It was a champion n it wasn't loud to me n I even blocked it off to mske it quieter. Anyhow I'd love to tske a generator n my dog n leave with it and go to a friend's property but im afraid I'll freeze thru winter. She's in a cabin with a woodstove not that air tight but she's been ok. So why woudknt I. Maybe if I added a lean to would help keep the snow off and add an addition just for winter. Where I am.is not ideal but better for winter. But I be happier in my rv over this any day. I do get the humidity on windows too but I never got any condensation on my roof or walls etc only when nit rained I found n it was too hot to run heat. The reflectics are amazing if u can out them on the walls under more insulation begore u cover walls again with whatever u finish it with. It works amazing. Just on windows its amazing too. I do always have a fan running due to the noise and well i like the feel.of freah air on ny face when sleeping lol. I get hot fast with certain comforters or blankets, so it's nice to have the fan going and i like the feel of a little heavier blanket to sleep. Sorry for the book. 😊
@@MsLori1973 know the 'magic screen' with the magnets right? (Made for patio doors for homes). (Their cheap), Well downsize it for rv doorway, remove the sewn on velcro strips, rolled in on the sides, resewed it n added back on the velcro strips. Then added velcro strips to the sides of the rv inner doorway, (i beef up the sticky with 3m double sides tape), grab a fridge double bar adjustable retention bar, sewed velcro strips onto strap material to go length of the bars, slip it onto the bars, n also wrapped velcro onto the bar above to hold it in place. So yeah everything made to be removable, n hang the screen door on the tension bar via velcro. Or if cant use a tension bar above the door i used to mount strong but removable velcro strips across the whole top above the door if vinyl above doorway used 3m double sided sticky tape, or stapled non-sticky velcro above doorway if cloth above door way. Ive used the same screen for 3 rvs now lol had to adjust for door size everytime though 🙄. (Always make stuff like this so it's removable, without leaving any noticeable damage.) Stuff screen into bag in colder seasons out of the way. 🍻
What do you use to insulate the front hatch over the bed? Looks like you have an insert in it? Also wondering in the NL has a heat duct in the bathroom? Bigfoot doesn't and it gets very cold in winter temps. Enjoy the snow, we got a foot up in Fairbanks AK this weekend. Great time for winter camping.
The hatches I don’t use I put foam board in them, no doesn’t have a heat duct in the bathroom but they use a sliding door so it can be left open and not in the way, I’ve never had an issue with it getting cold in there, also furnace is directly across from bathroom
I love your videos but the thought of snow ....... no thanks. I was used to it in MI but I've been in TN too long - although I do have a snow shovel to clear the drive and have had to use it. I'll just enjoy your video on this 81 degree sunny day here.
Great video, my only suggestion is to not say “So you may find yourself asking the question” I couldnt help but notice it multiple times, other than that i enjoyed your video!
Hey Kevin can you do a video on how you winterize the 5.9 cummins turbo diesel pickup for those -40 starts. Or do you keep the truck running during those -40 nights. Great videos and thanks.
I have an engine preheater but at -40 I usually go somewhere I can just plug in, makes life easier, I guess running a generator wouldn’t be bad either but just getting a campsite for a few days is fine too
20lb bottle every 2 days when it gets into negatives during day, this camper may be a bit better cause it is insulated a lot better than my old one. Also I’m using the propane to heat water and cook.
At those temps I go through a 20lb tank every two days. It’s isn’t cheap but when I do the math with a diesel heater it comes to about the same (7-10$ a day) in reference to my house was about the same in price to heat
Cabelas or bass pro shop would have them, any outdoors store in Canada carry’s them but mine was given to me from my old job, it’s made with real rabbit fur
Your exuberance for the natural wonders around you is contagious. You’ve quickly become one of my favorite channels. 😊

I did the same butcher job on sealing my bay doors. it's more a case of the seal remaining sticky and dirt always sticking to it. I've had better luck painting flex seal on those areas.
Awesome video very good info. Window covers do work. You should be toasty this winter. 🛠️🇨🇦🛠️🇨🇦
well... if you stay on the island you can prep for around -1 or -2 lol. usually once per winter for a week or 2 it might go as low as -15 but thats not very often.
Currently back in Alberta lol
@@KevinWaldsAdventures beautiful and 10 deg here (port alberni) might get down to zero in the next few days.
Thank you learning from your videos, snow where you are will be heading here to Edmonton soon lol happy travels!🇨🇦❤️👍
@StevenJeffrey-h2g mines just a little buddy. I'm not full time.
If you’re using a buddy heater I’d hook up the diesel heater.
be sure to crack a window or two when using buddy heater indoors :)
@StevenJeffrey-h2g yeah, good idea. I never sleep with it on. I just turn it on in the mornings when I get up.
Great job !
Lol
😂🍻
try putting that refectix stuff on the outside of your window! it works on the outside REALLY well! but inside it doesnt it creates moisture and mold..
I’m not an accountant or involved in
that.
I sure looks like you got all your bases covered. Keep living your dream!
Great tips !!
Omg what is that white stuff ???….😂😂😂
I do enjoy the winter months too ..
Looking forward to your winter videos !!👍
Brrrr! What do I fo to get ready for winter? Head south! 😅
Don't have any tips but great video,,,thanks
Great video, my only suggestion is to not say “So you may find yourself asking the question” I couldnt help but notice it multiple times, other than that i enjoyed your video!
6 inch duct supplies 350/ 400 c.f.m.
Hey Kevin can you do a video on how you winterize the 5.9 cummins turbo diesel pickup for those -40 starts. Or do you keep the truck running during those -40 nights. Great videos and thanks.
I have an engine preheater but at -40 I usually go somewhere I can just plug in, makes life easier, I guess running a generator wouldn’t be bad either but just getting a campsite for a few days is fine too
Another great video! Love it! Question, how often do you fill propane during the winter?
20lb bottle every 2 days when it gets into negatives during day, this camper may be a bit better cause it is insulated a lot better than my old one. Also I’m using the propane to heat water and cook.
Great video, thanks
great videos. i just wondered in the dead of winter lets say at -15c 0r -20c how much is propane for a whole month. thanks scott.
At those temps I go through a 20lb tank every two days. It’s isn’t cheap but when I do the math with a diesel heater it comes to about the same (7-10$ a day) in reference to my house was about the same in price to heat
What do you do when you are moving sites, driving between the sites to keep the water from freezing? Run your heater?
Run the furnace while driving, the system is sealed and exhausted out so no chance of fire
Detail video👏👏
I always wanted one of those wool hats with the ear flaps but I live in Florida. People would probably stare at me.
let them stare! shine bright!!!
I want one of those hats. Where did you get it?
Cabelas or bass pro shop would have them, any outdoors store in Canada carry’s them but mine was given to me from my old job, it’s made with real rabbit fur
so many ducks!
OMG! You are such a Canadian! LOL! ;)
If I were you, I'd just fill up the tank and head to Arizona for the winter instead, lol.
I love the winter though!! Gotta chase the storms and ride the mountains 🏔️ 🏂
This hat is so cool :D
I heard it came down the other day. Means its gonna hit ontario soon. Ahhhh love the hillbilly hat hahahaha 😅😂
I ask myself, “Kevin, why didn’t you just put the thermostat on a higher temperature instead of going to the trouble of moving it?”
It was almost a 10 degree difference from where it was to the bed area
