Started with a 38ft motorhome, was really nice, but the maintenance cost was outrageous. Went to a 42ft. fifth wheel monstrosity, way too big for the two of us , and cheaply built, had a hard time fitting in anywhere. Now i have a lance 975 with a huge Victron solar package, coustom diesel heater , and every factory-installed option you can get. Very well built. Hauling it with a ram 3500 HD dually 4 wheel drive. A world of difference. Now , we can go just about anywhere with a lot less stress. And i can still tow a small trailer or boat of needed. This setup has opened up opportunities for remote camping we never had before.
Had all the rv’s over the years. Travel trailers, 5th wheels and 3 campers. Campers have worked the best for us to get us off road and away. Currently have a 2012 Ram 2500 with over springs and a 2002 9.10 ft Adventure camper. Put on 16000 km this year from Utah to Dawson City in the Yukon. Gives us everything we need, category 3 hitch on the front for 2 Ebikes and inflatable Kayaks fit in the back seat. Great way to be outdoors for 2 70+ year olds
Use to spend so much time setting up camp with trailers, getting up on boards to level, then unhooking, then put the stabilizers down then adjust the levelling again, then pulling out the grass mat chairs n tables. Then packing it all up again n hooking her all up again...😖. Now with truck camper, i pull out the boards to level still, pull coffee machine from the sink, n pull out my chair from trucks back seat, done. Love the simplicity 😁. Oh n my favourite, so easy to turn around n go back the other way when i goof up! 😂. And verses a van, my bed n table never have to be rearranged to be used 😊. 🍻
Thanks Kevin. We use a 31’ 73’ Airstream for base-camp in NL. Love our multi functional truck camper because of its agility, and we can toad our Canam side-by-side for some real dirt wheeling, bush punching jaunts. Our 4x4/w D8 tires - 6.2 (gas) GMC is low profile for us old folks-easy to get out and in.
Your first point as to why you chose a TC was the exact reason I chose one as well. I have no real confidence in todays build quality of most units including trucks, That and the fact that any kind of pullout can be accessed makes the TC a winner!
Thanks for all your insights on what rig would fit you best, I chose a 28ft Class C, because it fits me and my 2 medium to large pupper dogs. It's my mini home and I can go anywhere I like, I'm not afraid to drive it, park it or go shopping. It's the lifestyle I always wanted, I love waking up in the quiet forest or in the middle of the desert surrounded by mountains and blue skies. I can park alongside a river bank, an ocean or a little stream. I love my home on wheels.
My wife and I tried a travel trailer but having to tow was a pain especially as you say in town or city areas. Sold that after one year and did a lot of research on vans the past 2 years but could not justify a camper van build that is over $200,000 as the popularity dramatically increased prices. Even used campervan builds that are 4 x 4 were just too expensive and too close to new pricing. Truck I have is a dually so natural decision to go to truck bed camper . Allows me to use truck for work and can throw on the camper when I want.
Well, affordable is relative but I went with a 2024 10-2 northern lite. Pick it up in new year. It becomes affordable to me as the re sale value I believe will be good so after we are done our adventures we will get a decent return.
@@PorterAdventures totally is. Nice good for you! I’m sometimes a bit too analytical to make a decision, atleast right now haha. A lot of life plans but I’m young so trying not to rush things 😅
I am new to your channel. It just popped up in my RUclips feed. I was interested to see why you chose a truck camper. I have seen some, but not many, retired folks using a truck camper. My husband and I are retired, full-time RVers. We started out in a rather small travel trailer. Health problems required more than that to continue with this lifestyle. Now we have a 28 foot Class C which suits us very well. My husband can no.lomger drive, so I drive! And we tow our Jeep on a trailer! I do this! Testosterone not required! I drive and my husband can get a snack, or get to the bathroom whenever he wants. We have a slude-out. Life is good. Different things for different people. I will subscribe to your channel to see what you are doing. Happy camping!
Love the information Kevin Your Awesome and and your Snow Boarding Footage is out of this World I finally understand why people love it so much and what it means to have fresh Snow😊
Kevin,im sure you have figured out that I watch your videos. Really enjoy them, you are doing what you enjoy and living your self. It was so nice of you to mention Foresty Forest! Him and Rocco sure do some crazy adventures. Your truck and camper sure do fit your needs right now. Yes it is pretty and getting colder…
Thank you for the good solid information Kevin. I am planning to buy a truck camper myself within the next year or two. Your videos are helping me know what to look for. Thank you.
Check out Northstar Truck Campers. I have one called 8.5 Arrow. Specially built for a short bed Truck. THE only drawback with mine is you must remove your tailgate. Northstar is very well built in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Have had mine for 15 years. One problem. Passenger side taillight bulb went out LOL😮
Love ot. Ive been trying to decide which way to go for a small but cost effective oackage and I keep bouncing from ideas like a small Honda Element to easy van builds. These rigs always seem to circle back to me. Cheers from Edmonton!
Well done Kevin, love your videos….I have to say congratulations on videography and audio, great shots and audio is always intelligible ..you must have had some training in that area because lots of you tubers have terrible audio. Very interesting content. I love your positive nature…cheers
Hey Dude👋🏻 another good video brother. I love your positive attitude, I think that’s why I enjoy your videos so much, I think I just need your positivity. I can’t wait to finish my 02 NL 10-2 and start bouncing around. I’m all the way at the opposite end of the west coast from you in San Diego. We have no winter here😂flip flops and socks. Hope my comment finds you well Kevin. 🤘🏻😎keep on keeping on!
Mines short like yours n it was a flatbed that came with a medal box with sides n a thin tail gate. I have a super crew cab full doors. But my bike wont go in less i take a wheel off n its awkward to fit in.
Hello Kevin! I think you have the perfect camping equipment ! I’d love to have your kind of setup if I were to be a full time nomad. Upon reflection, you chose what suited you best. Happy travels ❤!
I love the the truck camper idea. But I really love my rig first gen cummins and 2016 forest river shockwave toy hauler. Live in it year around for the last three years. Finally got a diesel heater and so far it’s been great. Working on the rigs it’s especially cheap to heat. Free fuel💪
You coulda showed us the shower space. My 1 ton 28 ft ford has a full rv sized tub. They always show these rvs on the tube and I always look at the bathroom to see if they got the full tub. Shower space is a huge consideration.
Sorry eh, shower is definitely not the biggest but still enough I use it every second day. Also only 36 gallons of water on board. Definitely not a bath tub lol
Having a properly equipped 4x4 camper truck capable of not only hauling the camper but rigged up with a long hitch able to flat tow a smaller vehicle ( Jeep TJ with its suitable driveline as a good example ) or a boat, enclosed trailer with a street bike or other play toys. that gives a person a variety of options and yet not be a stupidly large outfit like a high end rear pusher motorhome ( if one has a few million to spend ! ). The powered main rig pulling a secondary vehicle such as the TJ I used an example can get a person out of so many binds as the main tow vehicle breaks down, as well as it becomes the explore vehicle and the run around vehicle in town for supplies etc. Of course with todays prices if one is looking at a new truck and camper, I would think it would get close to that 250000.00 range for the pair which sounds insane but then look at the stuipd prices of some of these low end overland rigs, never mind a high end rig.
Choosing between the two personally I really like the dinette, extra counter space and a suitable place to work on the computer is importtant for me. My last camper had more of a couch with a dinette which was okay but I always felt it was a bit awkward and when I started looking for a new one a face to face dinette was a must for me, personal preference I suppose
Thank you for this video, as I am thinking of doing this exact same thing, I presently have the truck and camper but I want to travel more with the camper and truck into the states but would prefer to get the dually as have the single axle at this moment, and looking at the price of even second hand duallys they are crazy, my camper is a 10.5 Okanagan,,,So was considering a cammperized van but wow the price of the camper vans are insane, and people are asking huge bucks for junk, so not sure what to do at this time, thank you for the video,
Ive got an 05 ram 3500 diesel, 18 dually reg cab long box. If i was to do it different, i would have got an isuzu fuco and build my own on the back with pass through to front.
If I had a choice, I would pick a pick up and enclosed trailer converted over to a camper reason why is set up the way I want it. I’m just locking the funds to get the truck and trailer and all the stuff.
U watch steve wallis 😂 that guys crazy funny. I watch him too lmao 😊 yep 1800 for a cheap motel not a kitchette monthly. Tried that before here during my rv time. I pay cheap rent but the negatives outweight that cheap rent. My rig will stay on but can u tow a small trailer behind with light firewood? Cuz thats what i used to do n i made wicked money. But now id like to do just campsites this time around by the truckload. Lol hmm never thought of leavin it in a campsite or maybe mom n dads. Taking it off scares me 😮
If the motor explodes, you can buy another low mileage motor for WAY cheaper than you can buy another truck, OR another truck camper. You can get a low mileage engine dropped into a truck for about 3 to 5 grand, depending on who does it. Mexican mechanics who work on the edge of the city will drop in a motor for a grand in labor.
I live in Canada. Getting QUAILITY work done, hell even shotty work done costs crazy amounts. Any shop I’ve asked what they charge to swap this motor you are looking at 12-15 grand. Gas motor is less expensive but still when those things come up you question whether it’s worth it or not.

lol really! I either google search the area for laundry or actually the app iOverlander has lots of places marked for laundry, just have to turn on the setting.
Thank you Kevin, excellent information. Can you elaborate on how comfortable or not sitting at and working from the dinette is for long periods. Also at some point you mentioned that the newer NL 10-2 are much heavier. Is that because they are more 4-season insulated and all of the things you have done to yours? Also I understand the current NL 10-2 require a dually.
The dinette isn’t bad for long periods and I believe new 10-2s actually are a bit bigger in size compared to mine, same width but taller and longer, they have a whole additional cabinet in the back.
I think I’d be fine with a slightly bigger wet bath, dry bath wouldn’t be bad either but it is nice to have the extra space in living area. Newer 10-2 and 8-11 northern light have a dry bath option but it feels more like a larger wet bath, I’d be good with that too.
@ yes. The wet bath in the newer 10-2 is pretty good. The new one also weigh a lot more than yours. At least with all the options they have. The one I’m looking at is 3750 lbs. the inside sticker says 3350 lbs. but after weighing it at the dealer it was a bit heavier. Almost makes me want to go with an older one. Thanks for the input.
Been watching your videos for a bit and love the information you give/experience. I was thinking myself a mini-van to reduce gas bill and do more trips (cheaper) but relatively still comfortable. Any thoughts on that with your experience? Like would it just be better if I fully invested with something more comfortable to maximize my enjoyment in it? Idk the thing is the mini-van is still expensive prob near the same cost as yours or 8k less when I factor build cost and amenities with vehicle
Depends on cost really, and I do see with a mini van it would be a lot less comfortable but if your overall goal is to sleep in it and travel to as many places as possible I’d say go for something that gets good fuel mileage. I live in my truck camper and before that was me and a girlfriend going snowboarding so I’ve had the need for more space. I often do miss the jeep for cheap fuel and off road capabilities often.
Kevin has answered this question multiple times in his vids and even made a vid specifically about having a pet on the road. Look for "Why I WONT Get a PUPPY! Living On The Road." The vid was made 4 months ago. Really, getting a pet just to raise subscriber count is pretty sad (hardly the right thing to do).
The best thing about a van is being able to go back and forth from front to back without going outside. Thanks great video!

Look for wedge style foam/pillows. They come in many sizes and could help with you sitting up in your bed.

What did you find for an affordable truck camper?
Well, affordable is relative but I went with a 2024 10-2 northern lite. Pick it up in new year. It becomes affordable to me as the re sale value I believe will be good so after we are done our adventures we will get a decent return.

Nice shout-outs! Enjoyed your assessment of things truck and camper. Stay awesome. 👍😎🇨🇦
One way to keep the truck size and also use a camper is simple. Change the bed to a farm flat bed and install side boxes for storage. )))
I’ve had both a travel trailer a and camper. The camper is way more versatile. Yes its smaller but half the time you are outside around a fire

Also what's a reck center? I have 1993 36 Holiday Rambler Motorhome, I love that the structure is ALL aluminum and very little wood or Fiberglas.

Recreational centre?
What brand, model , year etc is your truck camper and also your truck please?
2001 northern lite ten-2000, truck is a 2005 ram 2500 w/ 5.9 cummins

If the motor explodes, you can buy another low mileage motor for WAY cheaper than you can buy another truck, OR another truck camper. Well hello beautiful eyes 👀 Kevin it's always amazing to see another amazing camping truck camping I really love you're truck camper
Great advice, really appreciate the 'conversation', this is helping me make my next choice. I converted a Yukon into a camper, the advantage is it's compact, powerful, and has all the 4X4, V8 capacities, but it's a little cramped now that my bf comes along. I've been looking for a trailer to tow, but I prefer the truck/camper idea. You convinced me 👍🇨🇦🏕
Did u buy or are u leasing it? Foresty forest. Hes a cool guy to.
one thing you never mentioned is laundry. I couldn't for the life of me find a laundromat between Victoria and Edmonton?
lol really! I either google search the area for laundry or actually the app iOverlander has lots of places marked for laundry, just have to turn on the setting.
Look at all the storage wow. How tall is your camper ?
12.5 from the road, it’s tall
Am in the market now to buy a truck camper the price of these is way more than an equivalent size RV trailer.
Great info like always Kevin! #100ksubcountdown
Thank you Kevin, excellent information. Can you elaborate on how comfortable or not sitting at and working from the dinette is for long periods. NICE
You can't beat a RWD V8 (with a little supercharger) 😉
Are you happy with the wet bath? Do you ever think you wish you had the dry bath?
😅😅😂and you are hilarious 😅😂love it Do More❤
I'm curious if you're able to have a camper and pull an rv at the same time.
If you have a big enough truck there is nothing stopping you lol
And all off grid places are not plowed in most places
I’d just use an ebike to explore, and only take the camper off when the truck needs repairs.
E bike would be wicked
Been watching your videos for a bit and love the information you give/experience. I was thinking myself a mini-van to reduce gas bill and do more trips (cheaper) but relatively still comfortable. @ cheers man. Keep taking care!
It would be cool to have a truck camper meet like a group and some booze weed a fire music going would be awesome
One consideration in favor of a truck camper. You do not have to register it.
You do in Oregon
What size lift does your truck have?
3” Carli
@@KevinWaldsAdventures My truck has an 8'' lift and my camper doesn't look any higher than yours lol.
Kevin I hate to disagree with you, but doing what you do without 4x4 is just lacking in fore thought..
y dont you use your inside shower,,?
I use my inside shower, my last truck camper was a bit harder to but in a bind it did work
👍✌️
Have you thoughtabout getting a pet like forestry or a cat, might boost your subs,
Kevin has answered this question multiple times in his vids and even made a vid specifically about having a pet on the road. Look for "Why I WONT Get a PUPPY! Living On The Road." The vid was made 4 months ago. Really, getting a pet just to raise subscriber count is pretty sad (hardly the right thing to do).
👍👍🇨🇦
Do you ever have rodent issues?
No I don’t actually
@@KevinWaldsAdventures I just have heard many complain of this....on campers
