If I had seen this video two hours ago, I'd of been done over an hour ago. Whirlpool doesn't give any instructions on any of this, and so videos like yours are real backsavers (and also save one from getting out the sledgehammer). Thanks!
Thank you for producing this video. I faced the same issue about a decade ago with my Kitchenaid. I pulled the sheet metal cover off the back and traced the problem to the grommet which had clogged up. Removed the grommet and melted the dammed up ice. Problem fixed forever. No need to operate on anything on the inside of the fridge.
Thank you for the video!! It saved me calling someone to take a look at it. Now I'm pretty sure my main issue is the grommet
I have NEVER done anything like this in my life. Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial. My husband was very impressed when he came home!

Thank you. I have a Whirlpool Refrigerator Model WRB322DMBM00 refrigerator. It has a bottom freezer. I need to access the ice maker and couldn't figure out how to remove the upper basket. I called whirlpool and was told we don't have any information on how to remove the upper basket and you need to call a service rep. So in there opinion, if you want to just clean the inside of your freezer, you need to call a service man just to remove the basket. I watch several videos, and you were the only one that told us how to remove the upper basket. Thank you so much !!!!

Thank you very much. This video really helped me. You weren’t kidding when you said the fins bend easily. Remove that back panel with extreme caution. I bent several of the upper fins. Did my best to fix them. That part wasn’t easy. Explaining how all the tabs worked was huge! Thanks again.
Thanks for the instructional video. I called a repair company, and they were about a week out on scheduling. I googled the issue, this video came up, and it was step by step. Thanks for saving me over $100!

Curious, what is it draining to exactly? I don't understand having an 'open' system like this. It's not like I have a drain line. Won't the drip tray get full again?

The instructions in the video were spot on. I ordered the upgraded P-Trap from you and replaced it in under 30 minutes. Followed the instructions in the video to get at the clogged drain and used a hair dryer to melt the ice jam. Took me about 90 minutes to remove everything, melt the ice, and put it all back together. Not a bad job. Thank you.

You are The Man! This was exactly my problem and, by following your instructions, I solved it very easily. My problem was not only the formation of ice at the bottom of the freezer, but also in the ice-cube drawer. I am confident that both problems will be resolved after having unclogged the grommet. Many thanks!

Thank you so much for this video we had someone clean the house for us. They pulled the drawer out and kind of messed things up by watching your video. I was able to get everything back together. I can’t thank you enough.
Worked like a charm! The hardest part was mine had different drawers that were harder to remove than what you showed.
Thank you very much. The drain plug on my fridge was clogged up bad and now it’s “problem solved”.!
You’re the best.!
Outstanding video! I wasted a lot of time reading different post online trying to find out how to fix this issue. They helped to identify the problem, but NONE of them addressed the issue. Your video got me on the right track & solved my problem very quickly. Thank you so much!

I know you get a lot of posts on here but as a first time home owner, this video helped me greatly. It only took me 30 minutes from start to end. Thank you so much!
You're very welcome, Scott. That's what we're here for :) We're so happy your repair went well! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us, we're glad to help!
So thankful for the help. I went through it twice. I should have removed the back panel off the rear of the fridge and run a wire or drill bit up thru the drain pipe to clear. Didn't do it so had to do again by removing ice like the video shows then boring out the drain from the back side of the fridge. Hey I'm 77 and if I can do it you can too.
I had a problem with the door not closing tight watch the video and did the top tray adjustment. Works great now thank you
Thank you for the video. Excellent instructions. They don't make refrigerators like they use to. I've had this Whirlpool for 3 years. I have to vaccuum out the dust under the fridge every 4 months to keep the compressor from overheating (like our last one), and now this happens. I've done more maintenance on this refrigerator than I've ever done on any appliance my entire life. Garbage design.

Thank you. This helps me to better understand what has caused the icy build up and to know what to expect when someone quotes me on the repair work. It's not something I will tackle myself. Plus its a good reminder to clean behind the refrigerator once in a while. Thank you!

Best video i found to get my freezer apart for my kenmore elite 596. Behind the back wall was the iceberg that sank the titanic i think. Out comes the wifes hair dryer.
As others have said, thank you so much for such a super helpful video. Getting that upper shelving unit off (popping the wheel/gear assembly up first) was completely unintuitive and I certainly would have broken something, had it not been for your video.
Thank you again!
Great instructional video, I removed the grommet and cleaned it with dish soap and water and a small brush. It removed all the sticky gunk. I was not able to remove the top drawer in the freezer so I improvised. I place a hair dryer against the vents on the back wall and melted all the ice behind the wall. I also slid a paper towel in between the panels which absorbed the water. So far it has worked very well and should be a fix until the replacement P trap kit arrives.

Great video. While not rocket science, the disassembly and reassembly would have been very difficult and confusing without these instructions. Thanks for putting this out there. Took me about 2 hours, start to finish, working at a casual rate.

Thank you very much for posting the repair video. My repair went exactly as your video.
The advice about how to align the top tray and get the door to align were very help.
The factory replaced the original grommet with the new design about a year after we bought the refrigerator. The new design lasted about 4 years before it got clogged. I simply removed it.

I did the same (remove the grommet). That caused you no problems at all?
I was going to call a repairman to replace our leaky ice maker but I'm sure I can tackle it myself after watching this. I'm certain I will have more trouble with the drawer removal than the actual replacement. Thanks a million!
but what is causing the ice to form..in our senerio, animal fur
Thank you very much for this very helpful video. I have a spare fridge so I transfered all the food in it, waited a few hours, dried everything and followed all the steps! My grommet was also the new and bigger "duck" one but it was dirty after only 18 months.... Thanks again for your precious help!

Great video. I have a Jenn-Air 36" fridge and was having this exact problem. Your video was very thorough and made fixing the problem easy. It took me 15 min to get to the valve in question which I cleaned up and put back on - the leak has since stopped. Thank you!

I had a repair guy in San Diego come out because my ice maker stopped working and there was water coming out of the bottom of my freezer. The ice maker replacement was $200.00 and $180.00 to unclog the drain. I had him do the ice maker but after watching this video I unclogged the drain myself. This video saved me $180.00. Thanks guys.

Thank you for this video. I did this fix today on our Whirlpool Gold fridge. Everything was exactly as it was in the video. Took a daunting task and made it straightforward and easy enough for me to do myself. You saved me money, and in the process, I learned how the fridge was built. I did break a clip on the shroud in the back, but the other 2 hold it in place fine. Thank you again! Very good video.

my Whirlpool model had slightly different shelf removal but besides that, this video was spot ON. Thanks much. Saved at least $150 for a service call.
Only other note having just completed the job is that the back panel of the freezer and tray are sharp edges and gloves should be worn to prevent a sliced finger. Thanks much!

When we had this same thing done on our (still working) 2005 Maytag French door, he made us take all the food & ice out, ourselves.

We had this exact problem with our Whirlpool refrigerator and by following your instructions I was able to fix the problem myself. I turned the freezer off using the controls inside the fridge first. I figured I didn't want the freezer trying to chill the warm water I was using to melt the ice. Also, I was lucky that the layer of ice at the bottom of the freezer popped out in all in one piece. Thanks for the video!

Took me 3 hrs, but I finally did it! I kept getting a "door ajar" alarm on after we were finished. The LED lights inside wouldn't come on nor would the ice/water dispenser work. Come to find out, the electric clip on the back that hooks up to the water pump was flipped the wrong way. Unfortunately it slides on either way so you have to remember which side is correct before you remove it.
Thanks Appliance Video! Your customer service dept. was very helpful and spot on. No problems whatsoever!.. I highly recommend using them. Saved a bunch of $ and everything fit perfectly! So glad b/c my freezer has been leaking for over a year. I just hope it works permanently. = )

I had this exact problem for a few days and even though I'm still under extended warranty I didn't want to wait for them to send someone . Thank you for the video. For anyone doing this, please note that there could be a ton of ice accumulated in the silver tray under the fins; and even it will require quite a bit of hot water to melt it all. I only changed the drain pipe thinking that the issue would go away. NO!! I had to do what this video shows to melt all the ice. I even had a huge block of ice on the right side on top of the fins.

I was about to five thousand dollars for a new refrigerator because of a five dollar part. Thank you for this video. Ten years old and still applicable.
Thanks for the detail explanation. Freezer was working but fridge was warm. Everything in back looked ok and didn't see any ice inside the freezer.... until I removed the back panel. OMG!!! It was encased with ice. Took a few hours to melt, clean up, dry, but it works like a champ! Now I am wondering if perhaps we left the freezer door ajar leading to the ice or if the auto-defrost is not working? Ugh!
Thank You! I will be doing this at my Mom's after already opening the back. That wasn't enough. Now I get to do this fun repair inside the freezer!

Followed your instructions and was finished in about 45 minutes. I had already replaced the rubber check valve in the back, but there was a lot of ice frozen behind the panel in the back of the freezer. After thawing it out, it drained perfectly. If we go more than a week without ice in the bottom, then we know it is fixed. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for the great video. It took me all of 25 minutes. What sped up the process for me was taking a 1/4" of the flexible poly sprinkler distribution line and using it as a syphon and to also blow out the line. Good luck to everyone doing this due to Whirlpool's obvious design flaw.

Small portable heater will do the trick. Turn the heat on at low and let it heats for about an hour with door slightly open. Once the temp reaches 80 to 90, it completely melts the ice.

Thanks for video, really helped me fix my issue. My issue was little different. My leak was coming from rubber tube that feeds the icemaker had frozen ice plugging it. So when the ice maker tried to water into icemaker the pressure in the line behind the refrigerator leaked. I had to do the same disassembly to get to the rubber tube and defrost the ice in it. I might have been able to do it all from the back by feeding hot water into the tube but not sure that would have worked or not. In any case this worked and we were able to do major clean out too! Thanks again!

Thanks for the quick response. I never considered the necessity to curtail humidity traveling back up the tube into the freezer compartment when the water in the pan evaporates.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video and make it with high quality sound/video it was super easy to follow and turned out to be exactly what my problem was. The little duck flange thing was filled with gross goop. Cleaned it out, cleaned the drain pipe, defrosted freezer and it is now working like new.

I did this fix yesterday, even though there is a new Trap piece to install instead of the grommet this part is still deicing process is still necessary. The 'drain' for the defrosted liquid was frozen over and needed to be melted. Squeeze a hot baster of water back and forth over the drain hole until it clears. Good luck.

Thanks for showing how to get the door and back panel off. My fridge was a GE model, which was slightly different. I used a hair dryer, melted solid ice that was on the coil, not much water as I used a screwdriver to move the ice off the coil then flipped it out into the opening, picked it up and put it in a bowl, then dumped in sink or outside. Then used the hair dryer to blow air through the channel going into the top fridge cabin.

Thanks for the video. My Kitchenaid model(whirlpool family) looks much the same. I defrosted my one-year old refrigerator to thaw out the freezer, but NOW I know how to remove all the freezer parts. My model has drain holes under the deli drawer that I poured hot water into to thaw out the drain tube and freezer drain pan. I haven't replaced the grommet "duck bill," yet, but saw it when I removed the back panel to check the bottom drain pan. I will try to order a new grommet for my Kbfs25ewms.

I also had water build-up on the bottom of my fridge. Fixed it in no time. Instead of taking everything out and pulling the back off, I moved the food to another freezer, unplugged the freezer for about 3 hours, and let the ice jam melt. Cleaned up water and ice and it has been fine ever since.

I did this but with one main difference. Without removing the inside back panel, I used a hair dryer aimed around the center of the grilled section inside the rear of the freezer where the drain is located. Once I melted that area to where I could hear it draining out, I just allowed future defrosting cycles to finish the job. Worked perfect

Thank you! Only broke one plastic and stripped two screws (even with drill clutch set to minimum torque).
Btw I think I found a simple way to reset fins at corners: run finger gently but firmly and smoothly along corners first in one direction, then the other, and even pitch is reset.

This Kenmore bottom freezer fix with the new P trap kit was awesome. Thanks soooo much. FOLLOW UP ISSUE: After I plugged the refrigerator back in it produced a couple of batches of cubes but then stopped altogether. I have a water dispenser on the inside left wall of the refrigerator and it works fine. I ran the water for two minutes per the manual to remove any air in the line. I am at a loss. :( The unit is just over a year old.
Did you have ice forming in yours? Ours is only 14 months old and it is forming ice crystals on the left side and bottom of drawer and on the pullout drawer. Appreciate your input.
