My girlfriend managed to stay spoiler free of GOT until November last year. Honestly, incredible feat. It was great watching it back with someone who hasn't watched it before. It was so close to being the best series ever.
In my teens i got into the anime phase and started watching Death Note (as it is tradition). Friend of mine smiled at me with exitement and asked "are you at the point already where .... dies?" She gets 10 min of hate every time we meet. It has bin 10 years. I will never forget.
A friend showed me the Red Wedding as a joke once (without me having any clue who the characters were) and it's actually what got me into Game of Thrones but in hindsight it was kind of a d*ck move on his part because that entire sequence is insane if you don't know what's about to happen. So, I'd say Max's anger and pettiness over it is definitely warranted.

I think it's more of expiration by popularity rather than release date. I'd be more likely to get upset over being spoiled for a random greek story than Harry Potter, because the assumption is that it's so popular, anyone who hasn't seen it doesn't want to ever see it.
I think that once something becomes a meme, it's not a spoiler anymore - so the Trojan Horse for sure isn't a spoiler because that has made it into sayings in multiple languages and has extended meanings that go way past the original story, I'd say the 'I'm your father' one is meme-y enough to not be a spoiler anymore, but not too sure about Harry Potter as there's not many specific instances from those stories that are a wide-spread, multi-generational meme (which I judge by me not knowing any :P). The red wedding from GOT might get meme-ified at some point but it seems more likely that the wide-spread GOT related concept is a more general 'everyone dies' 😅
