- Allan Simonsen suffered fatal injuries following a third lap accident in today's 90th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The 34-year-old Dane, at the wheel of the GTE-Am pole-sitting No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8, lost control at Tetre Rouge before making heavy contact with the barriers.
The driver was immediately attended to on the scene by doctors from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest medical service and was transported to the circuit medical center where he died of his injuries.
The accident resulted in a safety car period of more than 1 hour to repair the barriers.
Simonsen was due to share the car with fellow Danes Christoffer Nygaard and Kristian Poulsen, the current GTE-Am championship leaders in the FIA World Endurance Championship.
Simonsen, a former Danish Formula Ford champion, was considered to be one of the most versatile GT drivers in the world, having competed in Europe, America and Australia, with numerous wins and championships to his credit.
It is the first driver death at Le Mans since 1997 when Sebastien Enjolras lost his life in pre-qualifying. The last driver fatality in the 24-hour race was Jo Gartner in 1986.
I thought that, but having just watched another 'private footage' video, it's clear that some cars ahead were spinning - I think Simonsen had to lift off or touch the brakes on the curb. I thought it was a great driver making a very simple mistake (over-correcting a slide on a damp curb), but now it looks like he was trying to avoid the incident ahead...
Yeah you can see in the first clip where the corvette that is two back incar camera shows him on the outside rumple strip it breaks loose he turns into it and when it get back on the track it just grabs and goes left which is where the tires are pointed. that was tough to watch as he hit the barrier with the whole drivers side of the car. My cousin also passed away raing , doing what he loved ..RIP
He was okay through that blue strip and was beginning to make that right turn, aiming for the inside at the apex. That red car that was nearly stopped surprised him, for it appeared in that inside line, so he eased and/or turned just slightly back left to change his line, however must have done so just as his left side was on that strip in between the two lines. Maybe that surface was slippery so all the torque went to the right wheel, thus exaggerating that leftward momentum.

No, he took that corner perfectly. His left back tire, loses its grip, and makes the car face to the right, OUT OF THE CORNER. He accelerated out (ofc, if you are a racing enthutiast, you know should accelarate out of the corner) He tries to counter steer it, and he does, now problem is.. He got the grip.. a little too fast, and now he is drifting to the left, facing the barrier, and now it's too late.
A little too fast into the curve? You blind? He's at the straight before the next corner. What happens is that he runs over the curb and looses grip because it is more slippery than the asphalt. And that causes him to loose all control. This is a problem in all motorsports on racetracks.
Heres what happened he cut the turn early and came out straight on the rumble strips and each tire on a different surface, since he was straight he tried to accelerate as much as possible but the cars are so powerful one tire broke loose and caused it to start to turn. It happens all the time to beginners in professional sims. You'd be amazed how little it takes to break one tire loose on different turfs.
the spinning Ferrari caused him to run off the track a bit and the slick painted part due to the rain caused the car to snap.
