Thanks for the video. There are two bits of info I would have enjoyed seeing. 1) mount the tire with red dot in wrong location and check on balance machine. Now move to position at valve stem and check on balance machine to show the difference. 2) Show where you placed the weights. Thanks again for taking the time to inform your audience.
Red dot of tire is suppose to line up with a marking or dot on the inside of the wheel not the stem. If no dot is found on the wheel then line the yellow dot to the valve stem ignore the red dot. This is according to Yokohama.
I just use the Hunter GSP9700. I do road force cycle, mark tire and wheel according to machine, match mount, then balance. Saves excess balance weights and saves time. Machine was costly up front, but weight savings over a few years and lack of “comebacks” saving time (time = $), was worth the investment big time!
I wish our shop had the money and time to do that. But I couldn’t imagine breaking my back to unmount and remount the same set of tires until they’re perfect. It doesn’t pay enough and it’s tough on my back.
Thanks for the info!!! I viewed many videos just to find out which dot supersedes the other. Now I know the red dot is primary and yellow is secondary.
The red dot is the highest point of a tyre . If the wheel hasa low point marked with a dimple you align the two up . Nothing to do with valve stem . If your wheel has no dimple you then revert to the wellow dot . this is the lightest part of the tyre and should be aligned with the heaviest part of the wheel which is the valve stem hole .
not mounting the tyre right would that cause wheel wobble? sometimes I get the wheel shake then sometimes I don’t, wheels are brand new from Ford and some of the wheels have a lot of weight, guy at shop said they are balancing fine
Love the video. America has lots of valve stem sensors. When you first out your on you were correct IF YOU HAD A VALVE STEM SENSORS, but... At 2:20 in the video, you would've snapped it. Guess y'all don't have these?
A quick safety note for the do-it-yourselfer's. When airing up the tires, make sure nothing is between the tire and rim. Once it snaps into place anything caught will be cut. And unfortunately, you cannot re-grow fingers.
awesome video! I wish tire installers gave a crap about this....i ALWAYS make my tire installers align the red dot or yellow circle with the valve stems and they just roll my eyes at me every time like I am wasting their time...
That would be because you are. I've litterally fucked around with my tires and different positions and its random. No way to predict how that rim will react with the tire.
Thanks for clarifying those dots! Question: AT 3:44 and pause - To which pressures should the tire size 255/50R19 be inflated?? To the right of that size, on the door sticker, is just a horizontal line?
Just a quick correction yellow dot is lightest spot on tire line up with valve stem, red dot is highest spot on tire line up with weld on steel rims . Aluminum just use yellow dot.
This is from Hankook Warranty Support to my question about the dots.... "Hello, So I do not know about aircraft tires but the red dot on a passenger car tire is just a manufacturing mark and is not for balance. If the tire has a yellow dot then it can be helpful when balancing. Not all tires will have that yellow dot, it is only added if needed after the tire gets inspected at the factory." So, as Abraham Lincoln said, "you can't always believe everything you read on the internet". "The truth is out there"...??? You will see from my Google image I am an A&P Mechanic.
I have a set of 275/65/R20's on my truck and I've had it to two tire dealerships. My front it shakes and bounces (no suspension problems, strictly tire issue). I think their still out of balance. All 4 tires have the Red and Yellow dots on them.
What you need to get rid of your vibrations is a road force balance. I promise you, this is the solution. Basically a road force balance matchen the low spot of the rim with the high spot of the tire, making the total rotational "roundness" as close to perfect as possible. You can have an oval shaped tire and balance it with a regular balancing machine, but it will still be oval and vibrate while rolling. This is why a road force balance is so damn good!
Yellow - lightest part of TIRE Red - Highest point on TIRE Blue / drilled or other mark - lowest point of WHEEL IF Yellow only is present - align to valve stem on wheel. If Red and Yellow are present on tire AND Blue / drilled or other mark is present on wheel to identify its lowest point = ALIGN the Red (highest point) of tire with lowest point on the wheel marked by the Blue / drilled or other mark. NOTE: You should ONLY do this method if you can identify the highest point of tire and lowest point of wheel.
It would of been interesting to see if he showed how much weight it needed with red dot 🔴 and then put red dot 180 degrees from the valve stem to show how much more weight it would take???
I dunno what made me search for this. Curiosity, but got new tires on my new wheels, 22s, 305/45 annnnnd red and yellow dots all Over the place... nowhere near the valve stem lol does that mean my tire will fall off? Lol darn local tire shops... I’m not sure good known tire shops like les Schwab or America’s tire even know about that lol
just curious why this matters. If those marks are gonna fade out years from now and you go to vulcanizing shop to seal the hole they won't even know where the proper alignment is suppose to be.
Ok I have federal directional tires and on 2 tires dots are on out side wall and on other 2 when on car there on Inside wall and the tire shop said they can not align the red dot to the valve stem because of this. ?? Any help
Imagine me, a stickler for details, being WRONG about the red dot for FOUR F*$&ing years of being a so-called "mechanic" -- I always thought it was a fact that you put the red dot 180* opposite of the valve stem. Jesus Christ help me. Thank you, all my tire installations will now be correct after this video. #Embarrassed
It's just a shame in the uk most tyre fitters are crap workers and don't know this. They fit tyres any way even backwards. Jack the car up wrong and cause £1000s damage . Tyre fitters should be fully trained by law.
U fit the tyre wrongly the way u do that u pinch the valve whitch is problem coz u can damige the valve whitout know it and than the customer gonna drive a way with leaking valve and damige brand new tyre u r bit amater

@Hugh Raphael Try flixzone. Just search on google for it =)
@Hugh Raphael lately I have been using flixzone. You can find it by googling =)
@Hugh Raphael I would suggest Flixzone. Just search on google for it :)

I was interested as well what is going to happen if locations are changed. So I made a video about it. ruclips.net/video/RCyn3cUDFR8/видео.html
100% that's what I wanted to see
Red dot of tire is suppose to line up with a marking or dot on the inside of the wheel not the stem. If no dot is found on the wheel then line the yellow dot to the valve stem ignore the red dot. This is according to Yokohama.
Depends if it’s a steel rim or aluminum rim. Line up red dot to marks on steel rims... valve stem on aluminum wheels.
Land Rover is correct this guy is wrong
Goggle says the valve stem hole on most aluminum wheels is the low point on the wheel
red mark for uniformity method
yellow mark for weight method
so, yellow mark always aligns with valve stem

Correct, red always trumps yellow. 👍🇬🇧
Awesome information and video. This is how these need to be done. No nonsense, direct and to the point. Nicely done.
This guy is a pro! Very knowledgeable. and the red dot ? Didn't know about this.
I wonder if tire shops know this
The red dot is the highest point of a tyre . If the wheel hasa low point marked with a dimple you align the two up . Nothing to do with valve stem . If your wheel has no dimple you then revert to the wellow dot . this is the lightest part of the tyre and should be aligned with the heaviest part of the wheel which is the valve stem hole .
Exactly...❣️
At least someone got it right lol
Nice job, as far as what I have read I think you are correct and this video is incorrect
The retard you responded to is clueless at the very least. The fitter in the video is absolutely and unequivocally on point.
Would have been nice to have had the two comparrisons. The red dot on the valve and the red dot 180 degrees out and then see the weight
Excellent advice about cleaning the wheel.
Thanks very much.
Very helpful.
I now understand.
Wheel soap ( manufactured with sodium hydroxide ) = reacts with aluminum = future bead leaks .
Really enjoy your videos. Cool accent but very good narration. Logical and easy to follow. Well done !
His accent reminds me of the foreign guy Rick Bobby's competition
Your videos were always informative but the quality of later ones are getting better. Keep up the good work!
Where are you located? I’d have you install my tires anytime! I like your work
where do you actually place the weights based on the computer output? and how do you do it?
not mounting the tyre right would that cause wheel wobble? sometimes I get the wheel shake then sometimes I don’t, wheels are brand new from Ford and some of the wheels have a lot of weight, guy at shop said they are balancing fine
How's your MayFlower machine? Any video review for tire machine? Thank you!
Love the video.
America has lots of valve stem sensors. When you first out your on you were correct IF YOU HAD A VALVE STEM SENSORS, but... At 2:20 in the video, you would've snapped it. Guess y'all don't have these?
Oh yes we do. Common mistake that costs a shop lots.
I used to work at a tire shop bout 15 years ago and I noticed he woulda snapped the sensor too lol
Thanks just relearn something new just pick up 4 new tires and I wanted to know more about it thanks again .. don’t forget to subscribe! People
I have TPMS, so my valve stems are likely the heaviest spot on the wheel, not the lightest, correct?
This is awesome. I have had tires that have these dots put on at three places in my town and not one used them which is so annoying to me.
A quick safety note for the do-it-yourselfer's. When airing up the tires, make sure nothing is between the tire and rim. Once it snaps into place anything caught will be cut. And unfortunately, you cannot re-grow fingers.

The older the rim gets the less it matters.
That’s because they are unprofessional idiots . Would go somewhere else
Thanks for clarifying those dots!

Where did you get the BMW suit it’s awesome
Can anyone explain this even I have on my tyre DOT 4WL3 what is the manufacturing date

Thank you

Thanks mate.... for the info. one comment for your safety and whoever watches this video you must have a protection guard on your wheeluseful

@@pgharaghani28 there is one place that I'm aware of in Norman OK. that can do the RFB...They want $275.00 with NO GUARANTEE it will fix the issue.
Thank you so mutch
Thank you very informative.
nice explanation - what a nice guy!
Great video mate, just one question. If the yellow dot is installed on the inside of the rim is that a problem?
yes, your car will only travel backwards. 😅
So red takes precedence over yellow when there is both, thanks!
Subsribers from Malaysia here 😎🇲🇾
Is it just me or does this guy sound like John Gerrard off of Talladega Nights? Sorry I had to. Good video though!
Is there a way to get it off ur tire?
Yellow - lightest part of TIRE
Red - Highest point on TIRE
Blue / drilled or other mark - lowest point of WHEEL
IF Yellow only is present - align to valve stem on wheel.

So where exactly is that drilled location on the wheel rim. Is it a centerpunch dimple or...

Cone is always supposed to go on before the wheel.
Had many calls my lifetime never had an issue with red dots and yellow dots
Ok I have federal directional tires and on 2 tires dots are on out side wall and on other 2 when on car there on Inside wall and the tire shop said they can not align the red dot to the valve stem because of this. ?? Any help
Because their being lazy. Its not that hard to align the dot to the stem even if the dot was on the inside
Red dot to valve stem most of the time = no weights
Incorrect, there is a mark on the rim you align the red dot with. Not the valve stem.
I seemed to miss the part where you put it 180 out and balance it to show how bad it was
does anybody believe they balance test every tire without a rim and determine a primary and secondary balance(whatever the hell that is) points?
Imagine me, a stickler for details, being WRONG about the red dot for FOUR F*$&ing years of being a so-called "mechanic" -- I always thought it was a fact that you put the red dot 180* opposite of the valve stem. @fartpoobox ohyeah , red dot to marks on a steel rim... aluminum wheels use the valve hole as reference.
@@johnbattista9519 What if there are no marks on a steel rim?
Cone on balancer should always be in side of wheel!
Thank you that is all new to me the old days it was just a white dot .
My new snow tires came with white dots. Mfg date is 8/20
How you get that red dot off thats all i wanna know
I bought 4 new tires, only two of them have a yellow dot and none have a red dot.
They don't 😮clean the inside of my wheels
