    My hospital is always offering bonuses for bonus shifts. When they want you to do extra shifts remember the power is in your hands. They need you not the reverse. You make the terms and they need to agree to them if they want you to come in.
    1. I always say I won't float if I do a bonus shift(unless its a unit I like) If they want me to float I ask for more money.
    2. If I'm not in the mood really to do a bonus shift I ask for more money than the incentive bonus they're offering (ex. they offer 400 I ask for 600) more times than not they agree
    3. If I'm extra lazy or worked a bunch of shifts I ask if I can late start while having the same bonus(not sure if late starting worth it in units besides ER since you'll get a bunch of admits or screw people having them start at higher ratios)
    4. If its a holiday or a special day always ask for more.
    I know an ICU nurse who did bonus shifts on med surg only if they max her at 4 patients.

    Move to California basically six figures at any hospital system. Even with cost of living I’m still coming out ahead. If you can Catherine, you should move to California. Check out nurses to riches on how a nurse made over 350k a year combined income l.

    I’ve been a psych nurse for 30 years. I never received a sign on bonus. My suggestion is do not go into psych. There are fewer opportunities in psych than other specialties. Many hospitals don’t even have a psych unit. As a psych ARNP it is the opposite.
    Blood & guts turns my stomach. It amazes me I completed nursing school.
    I worked an extra shift every week and made a lot of extra money. As a result, I was not able to max out the 401(k) because I was determined to be a ‘highly compensated’ employee. Rather than contributing 20% I was limited to only 11%. Very disappointing.
    I worked as a travel nurse and didn’t like it or make a lot of money. Again, I was only a psych nurse. Less choice of location and less pay. I owned a condo and wasn’t able to rent the unit while traveling. The free housing didn’t help me. As the agency charge to the hospital was so high I was forbidden to work overtime. Travel nursing wasn’t very lucrative for me.
    The biggest value advice I can offer is work in a high paying location. I earned my RN in Florida. I hated Florida and my 1st job was in Chicago. Shockingly Chicago paid about the same as the Ft Lauderdale area. What saved my financial bacon was moving to Seattle. Increased my salary by 50%. After a while I was earning a$100k with no overtime. Last year I earned over $200k just working one OT shift a week. My hospital paid 2x for the last four hours when working a double. I never took advantage of that. Many of my coworkers did.

      @Katherine_Ann  2 года назад +1

      Hey Mary! You have to have 2 years of experience in med surg nursing and then you can sit to take it. There are a few different organizations that offer a med-surg certification. If you google "CMSRN" that is the organization I received mine through.
