Are Plants And Animals The Same? | Did Science Prove That Plants Feel Pain? | Veganism | Q & A

  • Is there proper research showing that plants feel pain? Truth is no, not a single one. However there are many articles with clickbait headlines floating about the internet claiming that plants can feel pain and suffer. Even if that were a true statement what should be the takeaway from that?
Does force impregnating, torturing and killing billions of innocent animals now become all right because "plants feel pain"?
To be logically consistent with that argument then you must also address every form of human violence and oppression with the logic that "plants feel pain". By that logic any form of action and violence in society can be justified by saying plants feel pain. The vast majority of non vegans are addicted to the "taste" and "pleasures" of meat, dairy, eggs and honey. Therefore they come with senseless rationalisations to justify their actions.
    Be consistent, be Vegan.

      sentience:
the capacity to experience feelings or sensations, as distinguished from perceptions and cognition. The word was first coined by philosophers in the 1630’s for the concept of an ability to feel, derived from Latin “sentientem” (a feeling), in order to distinguish it from the ability to think/reason. Therefore, sentience ought not be confused with consciousness, though the two are closely related.
As far as biologists can ascertain, the simplest organisms (single-celled microbes) possess an exceedingly-primitive form of sentience, since their life-cycle revolves around adjusting to their environment, metabolizing, and reproducing via binary fission, all of which indicates a sensory perception of their environment (e.g. temperature, acidity, energy sources and the presence of oxygen, nitrogen, minerals, and water). More complex organisms, such as plants, have acquired a far greater degree of sentience, since they can react to the light of the sun, to insects crawling on their leaves (in the case of carnivorous plants), excrete certain chemicals and/or emit ultrasonic waves when being cut. Perhaps the most strikingly-obvious phenomenon that demonstrates plant sentience is the way in which vines SENSE the presence of external structures, using such formations to support their stems and tendrils whilst growing.
In animal life, there are up to five sensory organs that are able to detect external stimulants or percepts.
ADDITIONALLY, many forms of metazoans have acquired a degree of consciousness, in which a subject-object polarity is established.
Therefore, when carnists claim that “plants have feelings too” upon being confronted with vegan ideology, they may be correct (at least in a rather diffuse sense of the term “feelings”), so the most logical reason for being vegan is not because plants are completely without sentience, but simply due to the fact that humans are an herbivorous species. If Homo sapiens were naturally omnivores or carnivores, then no sane person would condone veganism. In summary, all forms of organic life are, by definition, sentient, yet TRUE consciousness is found in those animal species that have a certain level of intelligence (that is, as a general rule, vertebrates, though there are a couple of notable exceptions to this general rule). Cf. “consciousness/Consciousness” and “carnist” in this Glossary.

Just to justify you on this topic killing Animals and Plants are not same.
I would take example, is cutting one person hair vs cutting one person neck is same. (Answer would be NO)
Because hair also grows on us like plants and cutting hair doesn't feel pain nor we nor plants.
But cutting neck sure we will feel pain, same do animals.

One argument could be made like
We humans need food to survive, right.
We have two options, plants and animals.
One thing is for sure that animals feel pain when they are killed, and some people are saying plants also feel pain when cut.
So, Veganism is all about reducing the suffering as much as we can, right.
When you eat 1kg plant, you eat 1kg plant
But when you eat 1kg animal, you eat approx 10 kg plants.
So, if you are so considerate of plants feeling pain, then the best option is to eat plants only, there's less suffering of plants there.

@@mrjha6085 I disagree. Plants do NOT feel pain. Pain is a process that HAS to be tied to conscientiousness. It just HAS to be! Plants simply don't have brains to process such pain and in fact Arvind had a really strong argument in the beginning, but maybe he was not biologically fitted enough to continue the conversation. He was right.
Neurological signals are simply a form a cellular communication. It's ridiculous to conclude from this transformation of information alone, that pain HAS to be tied to it. By this logic, you can conclude that even neurological transmissions that releases dopamine is pain simply because the neurological Transmission are happening. This is possibly the most ridiculous arguments I've ever heard and an argument that only a person who did not pass 10th grade biology would make.

The Plants and Animals are eaten alike in nature Irrespective of their capability of feeling pain and stress.

While the mother doesn't want his child kidnapped(causes a lot of trauma for both the child and parents) The tree wants us to eat it's fruit proof:Plants have evolved various strategies to entice animals to eat their fruit, which helps in seed dispersal. Here are some common methods:
    1. Color and Attraction: Fruits are often brightly colored to catch the attention of animals. Red, orange, and yellow are common fruit colors that stand out in natural surroundings.
    2. Sweetness: Many fruits are sweet due to the presence of sugars, which appeal to animals' taste buds.
    3. Aroma: Fruits emit enticing scents that animals can detect from a distance, attracting them to the source.
    4. Nutrient Reward: Fruits often contain essential nutrients and vitamins that are beneficial to animals.
    5. Soft Texture: The soft and fleshy texture of fruits is more appealing to animals than hard, unripe fruits.
    6. Seed Protection: Some plants have evolved seeds with hard shells or pits that are indigestible for animals, ensuring the seeds are eventually dispersed away from the parent plant.
    7. Symbiotic Relationships: Some plants form mutually beneficial relationships with specific animals, like birds or mammals, that become their primary seed dispersers.
    8. Timing: Fruit ripening is often synchronized with the availability of animals that can disperse seeds, ensuring the fruit is eaten when the seeds are ready for dispersal.
These adaptations help plants ensure their seeds are spread to new locations, increasing their chances of survival and reproduction.

  • @bushrasharafuddheen9836
    @bushrasharafuddheen9836 Год назад +4

Dear Aravind, you have missed following 7 important points :
Qn1) "What is the purpose behind an apple tree growing apples?"
An) "The purpose behind an apple tree growing apples is related to the tree's reproductive process. Apples are the fruit of the apple tree, and they contain seeds. The tree produces apples as a means of dispersing its seeds and ensuring the survival and propagation of the species. When apples ripen, they entice animals or humans to eat them, and the seeds are subsequently spread through the digestive system or by other means. If the conditions are favorable, the seeds can germinate and grow into new apple trees, continuing the life cycle of the species. So, the purpose behind apple tree growing apples is ultimately for reproduction and the continuation of the apple tree lineage".
Qn 2) "Which of the following human activity is considered as specism : repeated selective hybridization for high yielding varieties of crops or repeated artificial insemination of cows to produce milk in diary industry and slaughtering cows once they no longer produce milk"?
An) "The activity that could be considered as speciesism in the given options is the slaughtering of the same cow once it no longer produces milk in the dairy industry. Speciesism involves treating one species as superior or more important than others and often results in the exploitation or mistreatment of certain species. In this case, the cow is being treated as a mere commodity, valued solely for its ability to produce milk, and is ultimately disposed of when it no longer serves that purpose. This practice reflects a discriminatory view that disregards the inherent value and welfare of the cow as an individual. Repeated selective hybridization for high-yielding varieties of crops is not considered speciesism. Speciesism typically refers to the unjustified discrimination or mistreatment of animals based on their species. In the context of crop hybridization, it involves the controlled breeding of plants with desirable traits to improve crop yields, disease resistance, or other beneficial characteristics. This process is focused on manipulating plant genetics rather than mistreating or discriminating against animals".
Qn3) Do 'Arabidopis Thaliana' feel pain?
An) "Arabidopsis thaliana has various types of receptors that enable it to perceive and respond to different environmental cues. However, it's important to note that plants do not possess a central nervous system or a brain, so the concept of pain as experienced by animals is not applicable to them.
Plants have specialized receptors that allow them to sense and respond to stimuli such as light, gravity, temperature, touch, and chemicals. For example, photoreceptors enable plants to detect light and regulate their growth and development accordingly. Similarly, receptors in the root system help plants respond to gravity and grow in the appropriate direction.
While plants can detect and respond to stimuli, their responses are typically biochemical and physiological rather than conscious experiences of pain or discomfort. They have evolved intricate signaling pathways to perceive and react to their environment, but these responses are not akin to the sensation of pain experienced by animals".
Qn 4) "What is specism?". "Is human beings harvesting rice from a rice plant for consumption regarded as specism?"
An) "Speciesism refers to the discrimination or unjust treatment of individuals based on their species. It involves considering one species, typically humans, as superior or more valuable than other species, and using this belief to justify differential treatment or exploitation of non-human animals.
Harvesting rice from a rice plant for consumption does not fall under the definition of speciesism. Speciesism typically pertains to the mistreatment or exploitation of sentient beings, particularly animals, based on their species. Rice plants are not sentient or conscious beings; they lack the capacity for subjective experiences or the ability to feel pain or suffering. Therefore, harvesting rice for consumption is not considered speciesist, as it does not involve the unjust treatment or discrimination against sentient beings".
Qn5) "do apple tree feel pain if we pluck apples from apple tree"?
An) "No, apple trees do not feel pain when we pluck apples from them. Pain is a complex sensation that requires a nervous system and specialized receptors to perceive and process. As plants, apple trees lack a central nervous system and the necessary structures to experience pain. While they can respond to external stimuli through various mechanisms, such as growth responses or chemical signaling, their responses are not indicative of pain or conscious awareness. So, plucking apples from an apple tree does not cause pain to the tree itself".
Qn6) "what is the purpose behind a rice plant growing rice?"
An) "The purpose behind a rice plant growing rice is related to its reproductive process. Rice grains are the seeds of the rice plant, and their purpose is to ensure the survival and propagation of the species. When rice plants produce grains, they are essentially producing a vessel that contains the plant's genetic material, allowing it to be dispersed and germinate into new rice plants under favorable conditions. The production of rice grains is part of the plant's reproductive strategy to ensure the continuation of its lineage. Animals like birds can play a role in the reproduction of rice plants. Birds contribute to seed dispersal. After rice plants have produced mature grains, birds can consume the seeds and then excrete them in different locations. This dispersal mechanism helps in the colonization of new areas and the expansion of rice plant populations.
Qn7) "do a rice plant feel pain when we harvest rice as compaired to a cow butchered for meat?"
An) "Plants do not have a central nervous system or a brain, which are necessary for experiencing pain in the same way that animals do. While plants can respond to stimuli such as light, water, and touch, their responses are not indicative of the conscious experience of pain. On the other hand, animals, including cows, have complex nervous systems and can experience pain and suffering. Harvesting rice involves the collection of mature grains from the plant, which does not cause pain or suffering to the plant itself".
Please include these points next time you encounter "plucking an apple is same as slaughtering a animal" scenario.
I really appreciate you work. You are great.
    Warm Regards
    Midhlaj

That girl is arguing for the sake of it. Anyway, in a natural state of things, Apple or any fruit or flower naturally withers and detatches from the plant or the tree after the fruit becomes very ripe whereas the plant continues to live healthily for a longer duration without feeling pain. The same cannot be said of the animal - it's organs or limbs don't detatch even when the animal continues to live without them, with the exception of say, a lizard or earthworm.

I want to add my own experience here. During my childhood, I used to visit my grandparent's place and they have 3 big guava trees. One day I notice a fully ripe guava falling below the tree because no one pluck it from the tree. then, I understand that it's a necessity to consume it either by animals or humans otherwise fruit will be dropped by the tree itself. Fruit contains seeds and if we sow seeds near a tree, it will not grow much. But when a human or animals eat a tree, they spread the seeds which help to spread and sustain that plant and tree species. when you pluck an apple, the tree continues to grow and produce more fruits which tell us that plucking a fruit will not kill a tree. it's like if someone takes away our grown hair, it will not cause us pain and the sign is that our hair will be grown back after some time and its only possible when the source is still alive.

The final reasoning could have been that some plants completely rely on the fact that their seeds need to be carried away from the mother plant to another place (through fruit consumption)for the continuation of the tree. Same cannot be said for animals. This design of nature solves the dilemma between kidnapping a child and plucking an apple.
