Another example of why they need to eliminate traditional (often shady) car dealerships. Manufacturers need to take control of all, and clearly publish the standard out the door prices. “Options” should be optional.
The average new car price is 45k including the 7500 tax credit you can get a model y for 42,500. So they are now less than the average sales price and that ignores the lower total cost of ownership
Don’t! Worst time to buy. I’ve been to two dozen dealers and ended up totally frustrated (and I’ve been buying for 30 years) wait another 18 month things will change.
Amazing how people don’t understand that the car salesman “cannot sell you a car”, all sales are made by the new/used car “manager”. No dealership is going to give you a decent offer in writing over the phone/internet. Not gonna happen. Please educate yourself! View the vids on RUclips “Kevin hunter-homework guy”.
I called every toyota dealership in southern california, they either didn't have what I wanted or they marked them up. So I called up Chevy and Gmc, finally found the truck I wanted. Broaden your search and don't settle for their gimmicks.
They won't email you the quote because THAT won't get you down to the dealership. They believe if they can get you on the lot, they will sell you a car. It's all games. I can only stomach buying a car about every 10 years.
I had no idea the COSTCO program provided such high discounts. I've never tried it. According to your COSTCO quote sheet you had a 4200$ discount. That is unusual in this market. At least where I live you're paying sticker price.
My last four vehicles were purchased over the phone after looking at the inventory on-line and asking for a quote on a specific one. All four were Hondas and the best deals were always in an adjacent state. My last purchase was a 2019 Passport that I got for $6200 below MSRP, $4000 below Costco and I paid $250 to get the car shipped to my door. I have not purchased a car at a dealer in over 25 years nor will I ever.
My last 3 cars i bought, I spent a total of 22 mins on each car signing documents only. I don’t talk with salesmen and never buy the car while in the dealership. Simply get with the fleet/finance manager and work the deal. Also tell them to send over the out the door quote, then have the bank send them a copy check, wait 4 days and show up to sign documents

Great job, Billy on the street!!! Thank you for posting this important information that helps the rest of us navigate the car buying process. You are very transparent and they obviously aren't. I'm happy to subscribe to your channel and tell all my friends and family to do the same. Thanks again, (Great Music) you're the best, Bravo, Bravo, Encore, Encore!!!
The Costco auto discount didn't work for me. The price the dealership gave me was definitely no deal. It was their sticker price. You mention the Costco program and they don't even want to deal with you or they do a dance routine. I was better off off not mentioning the Costco discount. And I got my vehicles way cheaper than trying to use the Costco discount program. Maybe it was just my experiences. Yeah as far as scam dealerships, had one that said they would sell me a car for an out the door price I wanted and I did everything via text so I would have documentation. I said out the door tax and license and everything and no surprise fees added on. And they said yep. Well I go in and they had a fee of $500 for something I can't remember that everyone is required to pay. I said you guys told me out the door for x amount and no fees and they tried to b.s. their way through it. And then I mentioned the limited time complimentary oil change that they gave for new car purchases and they said no we would not be given that because I was getting such a great price. What b.s. they were trying to be sneaky. Well anyways we were going back and forth and they knew we caught them and next thing you know she goes talk to someone and comes back and said the car was sold to someone else. Which I know was b.s. and at that point I didn't want to give them my business anyways even if they backtracked and gave me what I wanted. I ended up getting a better deal at another dealership that was straight up with me.
Also its almost certain that the "Costco" quote would be handled differently. The problem was they already dis all their "added value" crap to all their for sale vehicles. If you order a "fleet" vehicle (which is what Costco does) then you get a vehicle with minimal processing from the dealer. They get paid a flat fee for delivery and aren't going to do ANYTHING that isn't required. I bought a vehicle (special ordered lease) and they basically prepped it and handed it over.
Respectfully, you are incorrect. Costco does not have the ability to "order" vehicles from the manufacturer. They don't get a "fleet" discount. The pricing through Costco is an amount the dealer agrees to sell the vehicle for above or below invoice. The dealer puts their pricing into a web portal run by a company called Affinity Auto. Costco just attaches their name to that program. All Costco authorized dealers put the price they are willing to sell the vehicle for in the portal. When a customer requests pricing, Affinity Auto, under the guise of Costco, will give them the name of either the lowest priced dealer or the closest dealer to them if they are within $200 of the cheapest dealer. As for a flat fee, that is partially correct. Dealers pay a set fee to Costco per month. It is not based on how many cars are sold by that dealer. If a dealer sells 1 or 30 cars through the Costco introduction, they pay the same amount.
I've purchased over 3 cars using the Costco buying program. I'm pretty sure I could find a better price but it wouldn't be by much and it would involve way too many games with multiple dealerships. With Costco, I get a good (if not great) price and the price is fixed. The only thing you have to look out for is the last minute add ons they throw on but at least I can manage that part.
I understand where you are coming from, but the whole reason I went thru Costco was to avoid this window etching, paint sealant junk and it does not deliver, easier but not the great deal Costco's makes it out to be.
I bought a car thought the Costco program. When I needed a new car I tried to use the Costco program at the same dealership. They had me talk to their Costco salesman. He told me they had three cars on hand that I was interested in, come on down. When I arrive he immediately disappears. New salesman shows he the car. It’s not the one I wanted it was a different trim level and they jacked the price up. I spent way to much time talking to them where they lied and lied and kept jacking up the price. I finally left bought the car someplace else and got the Costco deal. At this dealership they treated me like crap but I did finally get the car at the Costco price. Not sure I’d ever go through Costco again.
Last two car purchases were through the internet manager. 2013, when we actually communicated through email and 2017, when dealerships made you put contact information into their website and they instead try to make you go into the dealership to "take a test drive."
Exactly true, it'll be far easier on your wallet and peace of mind to get a Costco price and stick with that. I have bought through Costco and the fleet dealer that handles the sale says the Costco price is the price, take it or leave it and shows the paperwork. Retail car salespeople will jerk you around, make you come into the dealership. waste your time and then try to trap you into paying more. Save yourself the headache because retail sales is an antiquated middleman business model from decades ago.
The current car dealership business model is structured in a way that permits them to screw the customer over at every opportunity - legally. It's very rare to find dealerships that are transparent and sell at MSRP and don't pull bait & switch tactics. The practice of never giving an 'out the door' quote in writing is standard operating procedure now. The addition of "market adjustment fees" in the thousands (or tens of thousands) is a blatant example of their greed. These franchise dealers are content to screw over every customer one time (and to never see them again) rather than fostering a positive purchasing experience that will likely see the same customer again for vehicle maintenance/warranty work or another car purchase in a few years.
I used to not give “my best price” unless you were ready to buy from me. All to often people get a number and just shop it around, to save MAYBE a couple hundred bucks.
I think the logic behind dealerships is the longer they stick around the more committed they are to walking away with a car and the more they will pay for hidden fees ect.

I bought a car 7 years ago with the Costco auto program and am getting ready to do it again. Both times they told me they don’t send out quotes or give out prices for the cars. I have to ask for it at the dealership. How did you get an actual quote from Costco before you went to the dealer?
Having bought a number of new cars over the years, I can tell you that they are virtually ALL bad actors. All brands, virtually all dealers. If it's not one game, it's another, and I'd imagine it's as bad, now, as ever. Dealers don't want to give you an official price online because they know you'll shop around for a better deal. And I've had the same experiences with warranty service, which they really don't want to perform.
They’re taught to get you physically in their store using whatever method necessary. There are obviously dealers that can sell ethically without resorting to snake oil tactics. But they’re few and far in between.
I've yet to deal with an ethical dealer, for either sales or warranty service. And they get to practice and refine their scams multiple times every day.
Why do they want $995 to etch a vin number in a catalytic converter for an electric car? Don't they know an electric car does not have catalytic converters?
Two years ago got held hostage at a dealership by salesman for over an hour along with two other couples while he played the “I’ll talk to the manager” game. I walked out telling him it was ridiculous playing this nonsense. I then emailed the manager asking for equivalent Costco price for the car I test drove. Within half an hour manager emailed back asking when I could come in. Right after work I went in, signed paperwork, and got the best deal for a Camry off lease with 10,000 miles on it. The Costco car I saw had 35k miles on it. I had spent a month looking online. That is the best thing to do. If you can avoid the sales people playing the age-old games pretending they will ask the manager while you’re trying to negotiate, you will be much better off.
I'm on a market for a new car and I tried using Costco Auto Buying Program but Honda and Toyota dealerships says Hybrids are not included to Costco Auto Buying Program ☹☹☹, is this true?
Sadly, these dealers are often protected by state franchise laws and their contracts with the manufacturers. It's a business model that's no longer needed.
Great concept for the video and I'm glad you made it; however, you repeated yourself quite a lot on "getting it in writing", "contact the fleet sales rep", etc. Eight minute video probably could have been five minutes if edited by removing repeated information. I've used Costco Vehicle Purchase Plan and when a dealer would not meet the price, I call Costco rep who manages this program and he called the Fleet Manager and I walked out the door with the Costco price and an unhappy dealership. I spent six hours arguing with the Fleet Manager when I should have called Costco after the first hour. Hard lesson to learn.
If the Costco rep at the dealer doesn't show you the "Authorized Costco Price Sheet", you are not getting the Costco pricing the dealer agreed to. Even after you purchase, you can request Costco to audit the entire deal. The dealer must then send to Costco your purchase order and the invoice of the vehicle you bought with matching VIN. Costco could also request the trade appraisal if you had a trade in. If you bought extra stuff like rustproofing, they will even request the RO showing the cost of what the dealer paid. It is a HUGE hassle for the dealer.... if they tried to screw around with the pricing. If it was a legit deal, the dealer can easily provide it and move to the next customer. Unfortunately, most people don't realize that Costco can and will audit the complete deal for you.
Has the Costco program changed lately? I used it ~10 years ago, & it was great. The dealer emailed the out the door price. We showed up & bought the car at the price promised. Since that time, I've had zero success w/ the Costco program. It just sends my name to the retail sales people who won't give a price until showing up. Lately, the program has been a waste of time.
Internet is your best bet, get a price before you go in. yeah you can walk into a dealership and ask for the sales manager, but you’re not going to be starting off on the best foot.
I( think we just need to not buy cars, until every dealership is going a going out of business sale. Even if you get a good price it does not mean you bought a good car.
My first experience with the Costco Auto Buying Program is that it was useless. I signed up, got a call from a dealer a few minutes later who couldn't give me any prices on the cars listed on their website. I had to come into the showroom to get prices. Ok, fair enough, but you're 50 miles away. Why am I going to drive 100 miles round-trip to hear that I might not be getting any kind of significant discount? I've moved to a different state since then, so maybe I'll give it another go. Maybe they can connect me with a dealer who is 20 miles away.
Even with an email confirmation the contract left off $500 worth of accessories that were supposed to be included. I called another dealer on speaker to prove I was going to walk... "I've got another dealer down the street if you dont want to do the deal"
As a Costco member I decided to just look at automobiles just to check out prices. After about 5 minutes I realized this was not for me. The salesman hounded me for 3 weeks in spite of never responding to anything they sent. Costco, get the hell out of you association with the car business, you are doing your brand no favors.
Landlords do the same as well - like shady rental guys they promise you things like parking and end up doing the opposite. Take everything in writing ✍️
Ten years ago I tried the Costco car buying experience to buy a Honda. Total disappointment. Pricing was more than expected and the value for my trade was way too low. The Costco person seemed to be working at home and not aware of what goes on at the dealership. A supervisor for Costco car buying didn’t seem very knowledgeable. Maybe the process has improved over the years? The hassle at the Honda dealership was no different than usual. My thinking is that if you think your getting a no haggle “deal” you won’t haggle with the salesman.
Glad he played this Game with you Why honor Costco or any other discount program like AAA in this Economy and with problems in the Automotive Industry. People are willing to pay MSRP or even Above Sticker. This is not 2019 when everything was normal. I been in the Dealership side the past 25yrs now
What could go wrong….? A man with a camera out front, Costco quote in hand, doing a pre-fight warm up. Was you gonna sign on the line if price was right?
I hope so, but am not holding my breath. So many people, including myself, are ABSOLUTELY fed up with these stealerships. There are hardly any examples of a honest dealership. They are all mostly a bunch of CROOKS. If you are I did what some/most of these stealerships do to innocent people, we would go to jail.
Is this a used car? The invoice shows that the vehicle has 273,849 miles on it! For that price, Costco's or the dealer's, why would you even want to purchase it? I have a Camry with 225,000 miles on it, and it's getting tired and expensive to maintain. I'll sell it to you at a sacrifice price of $25,000. I won't even ask you for your Costco card.
Here's an even better tip. Never buy brand new. Here's another one. Never buy from a dealer, of any kind. Here's another one. Never buy with your emotions.
Report them to Costco, that sort of undermining the Costco price can get them removed from the program. Seriously report them and tell them to refer to the video
You guys are full of it. Try to buy a hybrid and see what happens, a Toyota or Lexus hybrid. They don't even have the cars and you have to "pay" a deposit to get on the first come first served "list". So, if you want a run of the mill car go for it, but if you want a reliable hybrid from Toyota or Lexus, you get on the list, take your chances, and you pay the price, period! And, there is not much negotiating except maybe on your trade-in, so good luck with that. Moral of the story, take care of your car and wait for inventories to catch up, if ever.

DONT PAY FAKE FEES OR DOC FEES.
@@daveshostack4950 Most dealers, 99% won't budge on doc fees.... other stuff, etching, nitrogen in tires yes....
Some states, like Cali, limit doc fees, so it'll be the same at all dealers and delivery centers. Seems no one wants to charge less than the maximum.
@@foxtrotwolf6081 because no matter how much the number is it is all....ALL...profit.
Thank you!
Why do they want $995 to etch a vin number in a catalytic converter for an electric car? Don't they know an electric car does not have catalytic converters?
'Yes, but our Donuts and Hotdogs fee is only $999, and we can finance anyone, even YOU!'
Sadly, this is typical of a dealership. That is why dealerships are going away. I agree, get all quotes in writing.
For the first second looking at your thumbnail pic, I thought you might've been the Dalai Lama, in a side career, giving us great advice here!
I'm on a market for a new car and I tried using Costco Auto Buying Program but Honda and Toyota dealerships says Hybrids are not included to Costco Auto Buying Program ☹☹☹, is this true?
Paint sealant insurance lol 😅
Good info no retail.Didnt know Costco sold cars!,internet sales or fleet.
I can attest to the "disappearing act". The sales manager eas no where to be found after I started asking about all the fees. I walked out.
Got a nice unexpected $1K extra discount via Costco recently.
Sadly, these dealers are often protected by state franchise laws and their contracts with the manufacturers. It's a business model that's no longer needed.
How does Costco price compare to employee price?
didnt you play for the pacers?
Thank you very much for your sharing
Took 7:22 to say [Don’t to go to dealership without OTD price in writing.] Anything else important did I miss?
So nobody gonna talk about the 273,849 miles on the car still asking 31k?!!! 😂😂😂
Good eyes…. Hoping that was his trade in.
Thanks for the video, please do more of them 😊
Has the Costco program changed lately? I used it ~10 years ago, & it was great. The dealer emailed the out the door price. We showed up & bought the car at the price promised. Since that time, I've had zero success w/ the Costco program. It just sends my name to the retail sales people who won't give a price until showing up. Lately, the program has been a waste of time.
Internet is your best bet, get a price before you go in. yeah you can walk into a dealership and ask for the sales manager, but you’re not going to be starting off on the best foot.
Why do dealerships exist these days?! Scammers. Manufacturers need to follow Tesla model or they will end up like taxi cabs vs Uber.
How does a 2021 Camry have 273k miles on it? That is 11,410 MILES A MONTH????? And how is it worth $31k????
I've never bought a new car. In Canada the crappiest Camry lists at about $34k. Costco in Canada offers discount on crappy GM cars.
As a Costco member I decided to just look at automobiles just to check out prices. After about 5 minutes I realized this was not for me. The salesman hounded me for 3 weeks in spite of never responding to anything they sent. Costco, get the hell out of you association with the car business, you are doing your brand no favors.
love this !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Landlords do the same as well - like shady rental guys they promise you things like parking and end up doing the opposite. Take everything in writing ✍️
Great advice. Eliminate the BS.
Let’s go Costco!!! 🙌🏻
Wait, at 2:01 that car had 273,849 miles....? Clown show? That's the understatement of the year....!!!!!!
You called it...
Whoa, 273,849 miles and they want that much? Even the Costco price seems high for that much mileage. @1:58
Glad he played this Game with you
Why honor Costco or any other discount program like AAA in this Economy and with problems in the Automotive Industry.
273,849 miles! They should be paying YOU!
Surely that mileage was wrong, over 200,000 and there still asking 31,000 for it, get out of here!
I could do without the sound effects.. otherwise a good video
I think Dealers are goinig to be Extinct
I hope so, but am not holding my breath. So many people, including myself, are ABSOLUTELY fed up with these stealerships. There are hardly any examples of a honest dealership. They are all mostly a bunch of CROOKS. If you are I did what some/most of these stealerships do to innocent people, we would go to jail.
I'll cry crocodile tears for their demise.
I agree. I can’t believe this goes on for decades. It has to stop.
What is the name of the dealer? Are you in Florida?
envison toyota in norewalk
the mileage is clost to 300k. WTF kinda car you tryin to buy with that mileage that is over 3k
"The email didn't go through" is lamer than "my dog ate my homework."
If they don’t start with the list price I am not a customer.
Verbal ain't shit. Nothing matters until it's recorded/documented in writing.
Here's an even better tip. Never buy brand new. Here's another one. Never buy from a dealer, of any kind. Here's another one. Never buy with your emotions.
Agree. We've only bought one new car in 48 years of marriage.
Report him to Costco!
Report them to Costco, that sort of undermining the Costco price can get them removed from the program. Seriously report them and tell them to refer to the video
I usually tell the loser car salesman this is what I'll pay out the door...If you can't do it, go pound sand.
If their lips are moving, they be lying.
Why would you waste all that time? The second they showed you a higher price you should have walked off the lot and called the next dealership.
never trust a car dealer
wow
You guys are full of it. Try to buy a hybrid and see what happens, a Toyota or Lexus hybrid. They don't even have the cars and you have to "pay" a deposit to get on the first come first served "list". So, if you want a run of the mill car go for it, but if you want a reliable hybrid from Toyota or Lexus, you get on the list, take your chances, and you pay the price, period! And, there is not much negotiating except maybe on your trade-in, so good luck with that. Moral of the story, take care of your car and wait for inventories to catch up, if ever.
Writing doesn’t mean anything
I can save you all $900 over his quote, I'm sending you a quote right now
Toyota/Lexus dealers are the worst. I’ll never ever, EVER buy direct from them.
