- It's January 1963, and the Christmas rush has passed. Stern's Department Store has just opened for the day, and I am enjoying the opportunity to help a lovely customer with her jewelry needs for an upcoming cocktail party.
Join me for all sorts of delicate sounds: purse rummaging, smoothing/brushing the velvet counter, adjusting tinkling necklaces and bracelets, fingernail tracing of gemstones, crispy shopping bags sized just right. Soft-spoken customer service begins at 12:47.

His mother recently passed away and going through her house (which felt like a house frozen in time from the 60s when it was built) really made me appreciate the generation and how people lived back then. This reminds me of shopping with my mom in the early 70s. I love the shirt, especially. It almost makes me sad, in a good way. I can just imagine the cat eye reading glasses, and the giant hair bun, and extra slim cigarettes.

Very beautiful video and makes me imagining how back in the day jewelry shop’s ambience will be I wish I was born in 50’s and 60’s.
The 50s and 60s had their dark sides, and my dad was drafted in 1961, but I was a privileged lower middle-class white girl whose whole world didn’t extend much past my block, with occasional forays to “town” with my mom. So for me, the 60s were indeed idyllic.
That fabric brushing at the beginning was so fantastic! 💕

Oh, I hope you’re feeling better, too. This is the first time I’ve had a cold in over three years. Lockdown and masks and hand sanitizer changed the flu/cold/strep landscape for me considerable. That part of the pandemic was nice, at least.

Yes it was! Started in New York City, but other locations expanded from there. I think it was purchased by another big department store conglomerate, maybe in the 90s I’m not sure.
