The soil is the main worry for me. 14 years ago when I moved into this house I removed a heck of a lot of soil as the previous owner decided raised gardens were in vogue. It was raised by about three feet and covered with heavy concrete slabs. Being in my mid 20’s I went at it with a shovel and cleared the lot in a few days. If I try that now I’d end up bedridden. My lower back is tingling just thinking about it. The only issue I have with a lot of sunken gardens is the concrete/stone seating areas. They don’t look too comfortable and you can’t really sit back and rest your head. I’d probably cover it with decking, I find wood adds some warmth and softness, as well as soft furnishings of course.
Hi Zizi, oh mind your back you only have one we all should listen to our body's a bit more but don't let that stop you if you have work to accomplish slow and steady... Your quite right Stone seating can be cold and not comfortable but as you say soft cushions or the right type of timber makes all the difference. I only use this patio some evenings to plan or the odd game of chess a space away from the house is I found a great place to relax sunken or raised peace is what's achieved.

Hi. Just rhe video I needed. I am planning to build one of these and at present trying to plan drainage. Did you terminate the French drains into a soakaway etc or will the water just drain back to the soil through the pipes? Thanks
@@ShitStainedBallSack The only burden on my case was the weather obstacles no smooth it would not of mattered i was getting around over under or straight through it dug the pit squared off and the rest was a pudding if you go ahead do let me know
Good qustion the main reason I built it out my back garden was due too wind and I can have a fire pit 🔥 in and out without the mess of Ash as for noise if the head level is around ground level as you say so if my one was deeper by a foot then yes and or adding some other noise vibration barrier dithch hedge small wall hugging a path way ect then yes it's has got to help noise reduction.Thats a good plan I like your idea well done 👏
I have a side yard that we don't use for anything because it has a slope from home to street fence. I live in tje city on a corner lot. The highest point is close to house and porch and then it slopes down towards street fence. The distance from house to fence is 16 ft and 60 ft long. This are the. Umber I got from slope if I did it right, 26"/100= 0.26 so I guess slope is 26%?? Anyways I been thinking on how flatten that area so we could use it too..after watching video I can probably do a sunken area to put fire pit and some chairs..build Maybe 2 or 3 steps to go down from porch to the sunken area. The area where I wanna build this is 16 ft x 20 ft.. after doing sunken patio I don't know if I should flatten the rest of side yard or just live it alone, I don't know how that would look?
Hi Andrew everything you see own from Slabs blocks sand cement pipes diesel petrol equipment required all in at 1100 or 1200 if your renting get the weekend rate or bank holiday and plough into it. Prices and edged north is this video but worth in non the less.
As you look inward there is a linear drain on the left hand side I placed in the drainage before I layed a block this is collecting rain water that then is connected into two pipes and two soak pits. All of the lime stone slabs have a gentle run off towards. The drainage on the right hand side as you look in outside the wall one pipe circles around the back the other in five inches inder the slabs that one is a solid pipe the other pipes are the land drainage pipes. It took me four weeks to finish it between work and everything else but it has been worth it
Hi Sarah Normally I work out a procedure that will work and work for me then I will follownit to the letter I placed in drainage 6 feet above the patio to catch some surface water...I also have drainage wrapping around the block work i placed one under the slabs and as you look in on the left hand side against the wall I have drainage place in. It has worked perfectly...3 and 4 inch pipes to take away rain water and good 2 to 4 inch stone allowing rain water to sink away. There are many ways and once it works it the correct way. @@tanujapatel4105 did you figure it out? i'm researching for my project at the moment. i live in a high clay area that is relatively dry (Colorado, USA) & my thoughts are to excavate several feet deeper than the finished depth & back fill with gravel... effectively making the patio so it sits on top of a dry well. i plan on using pavers but leaving a border of gravel along the outside edge & possibly having the paver portion sit slightly above that gravel border level.

Nope just direct the rain water into a drain soak away leading 20 feet away I have a few in and not one was there an issue.
