    I got mine in the summer after waiting in a pre-order queue. It's been on a couple of expeditions with me now, and it brings a massive benefit to the IC705 experience. QRP can be fun, but it's a pain when the band isn't in the best of conditions. The amp won't fix a closed band, but it will get you out of the weeds. Also, if you get cold when you're camping, chuck the amp in your sleeping bag and start making FT8 contacts. You'll soon warm up. :)

    Thanks Julian!
    A couple comments
    I love the PA-500 and use it with the 705 and TX-500.
    The LED lights are important and hard to see if you mount the PA behind the radio
    The 10m function on the FCC/USA version is a little wonky because of the requirement to not amplify the 11m band - there is a limited work-around.
    Oliver and Ed are both approachable and super helpful when questions arise
    In hot climates and direct sun - the amp can go into self preservation bypass mode quickly, particularly when using FT8. this can be managed by limiting output power to 40w in my experience
    The ic-705 max power setting is nice, but you still need to check it and the power level in the multifunction button - to prevent mistakes
    For CW, I use the VOX delay setting on the radio - which seem more effective than those on the amp - to prevent the amp from relay clicking
    All told - it's a kick ass package, very happy I got it

    Thank you for the info. I am happy with IC705. My concern is the availability of the PA500, hard to get and cost; this make me to choose / find other option. My setup at the end is using IC705 and FT891 if I need more power for portable/mobile operation, a half square antenna 40m with 2x 10m spider beam (shorten to 8.5m), 49:1 high efficiency UNUN for both device, connect to a coax switch, only ‘turn on” one device at the time, one computer, a generic ATU for backup antenna setup, power/battery usage is about the same and I had a spare HF radio for redundancy.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  Год назад +1

      The ft891 is an awesome radio but it's terrible with efficiency. The 705 even with the PA500, is far more efficient in transmit and receive. Anyway, I like the antenna idea. Naturally we should always start off with an efficient antenna. I believe this is almost the first thing I said in the video. The only reason I sold my FT891 was the current consumption. Sometimes I miss it, until I think about how hungry it was.
      When I think about the g90. I wonder why it wasn't possible to put 20 watts inside the 705. That would have been absolutely amazing!

I have no idea now whether I'll purchase or pass on the PA500 when I get contacted. The ic705 with the pa for HF, a Tuner for HF, an amp for VHF, a Tuner for VHF you have 4 times the mony, 3 times the space and 2 times the wight of a 991a. Please dont understand me. • @OH8STN

      QRP is not required by law. If you don't like it or can't do it, use the 991A.
      The real story.
      991A runs at 2-3 amps on RX, 20-23 amps TX with 100 watts. Even at 5 watts, the 991A still uses 9 amps on TX. So add the weight of the massive battery for the 991A as part of your system.
      If yout cabin burns, vehcle is broken down, ... how far can you carry the 991A and the battery to power it? How long will the battery power such a current hungry radio? For me, usually the 705 or TX500 is enough.

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  9 месяцев назад +1

      Complete Nonsense!
      QRP rigs are attractive because of their low current consumption and small form factor, not the output power! High power rigs consume vastly more current on RX & TX than a QRP rig and efficient amp combo.

    • @makskk6spm275
      @makskk6spm275 9 месяцев назад

      @@OH8STN We can argue for hours about this, right? How many amps does your amplifier consume while on standby?

    • @OH8STN
      @OH8STN  9 месяцев назад

      @makskk6spm275 80ma on RX, 10-12 amps at 80 watts or 100 watts for the expedition version!
      Manufacturers don't care about efficiency in 100-watt radios. I sold my FT-891 for exactly that reason. Also passed on the 857, IC-7300, ... because of poor efficiency. When your radio pulls more than an amp in standby, the size of the battery reserve storage must be increased. If you're running off-grid renewable, input current requirements also increase. The only way to get an efficient low current radio with QRO output fitting in a small pack is a QRP rig/amp combo.
      This is an old, well-covered, and extremely annoying topic. Not because of your comment, it's because manufacturers don't care. The manufacturer who develops an updated FT-897 style 100-watt radio with LiFePO4 internal battery, running less than 100ma RX and 10 amps on TX will be an innovator.
      Yaesu already did it in the Vertex HF radios. Sadly, they sold that division Motorola.
