    usually when there's a lot of noise on the band, you can just turn down the rf-gain and leave the waterfall ref at 0db. the agc wont punch as much and the waterfall isn't as noisy. a double benefit!

    Turning off "Max hold" is a awesome tip.
    All your tips are awesome, Eric& thanks for your sterling work on all these videos!.
    Quick tip to get back to the spectrum scope, if you're in another display mode is to hold down the "M.Scope" button.
    F-INP accepts MHz digits by default but its easy to enter 7.1 & get 7.1 MHz.
    Below 1MHz, enter 0.x in F-INP.
    I've also found the 705 (FW version 1.10) seems to only works on 2.4GHz WiFi (802.11bg), not 5GHz WiFi (802.11n/ac) & will accept WiFi with hidden SSIDs (as long as you pre-enter the SSID & WiFi pass beforehand), unsure if the later release FW allows 5GHz WiFi but not a showstopper.
    The colourful box comes with basic manual, Icom also has the advanced manual but only as a PDF download.
    One thing I'd definitely recommend people do - Backup your "preferred" settings to SD card in case you need to do a partial or full reset

    With the IC-705, can you have each mode represented as different colors?
    CW one color. Voice a different color. Digital another color.

      If it's your first radio just understand that QRP is a bit more difficult and challenging. I'm not saying to not get a QRP radio for your 1st rig but be warned that it takes patience. My 1st HF rig was an 817ND. There were some times that I felt like I was doing something wrong but then there were times I could make contacts into Brazil @ 5 watts.

    Hi Eric. I don't often see many responses from you to comments/questions (because you're too busy making new videos) but here goes anyway. I've been watching and giving "thumbs" to many of your very well done videos. I just watched "Buying Your First HF Ham Radio...". In it you stated a QRP radio is probably not the best option for a new ham. I'm new in the sense that I've only ever worked 2m/70cm, and very infrequently at that. I was wondering if this IC-705 softens your opinion a bit for newbies? This is such a tempting rig, albeit QRP. I have an interest in listening to the Air bands, I'd like to try to work satellites, and I'd really like to listen to anything I can receive from the International Space Station. And I'd like DSTAR (greedy, I know). I'd like to get the IC-7300 but it lacks DSTAR and the 2m / 70cm bands which is needed for at least some satellites (even though I have an old dual band handheld). Your response would be greatly appreciated! Thank you and keep up the excellent work. N2SCF Tony

    I wonder Eric would you prefer the X5105 , G90 or the 705 ?
    The X5105 is very compact, I love the form factor. The G90 is decent and 20w out but not so nice to use, ergonomics are rather poor and it's around the same size of the FT-891 just a but lighter. I prefer the 891, lovely sounding audio with headphones and quiet receiver. I sold the X5105, decent radio but didn't use it enough to justify keeping it.
    I keep the G90 in the boot of the car now and my 7300 is gathering dust, I rarely use it, I live in a RF quiet environment in the sticks and the 891 is by far the best sounding radio which really helps me hear the DX.

      If you're thinking about getting a 705 I can almost guarantee the Kx3 to have a better sounding radio less fatiguing to listen to, I don't own one but I've seen plenty of videos to see it's got a much better receiver, quieter with better filtering, I expect the 705 to sound as noisy as my 7300 which I'm selling for the much superior TS-590 SG that I used for a while in a friends QTH and hands down a much better radio with the option to add SDR.
      One very noticeable thing between the 7300 and the FT-891 is the noise, disconnect the antenna and listen to the harsh noise from the 7300, connect antenna and you get this fatiguing noise + band noise and the NR helps but it also ruins the audio.
      If you work SOTA during the day out in the sticks the 705 will probably be fine but on a base antenna at night on a crowded 40 or 80m band with plenty of strong signals the 705 will be hammered just like the 7300.
      But here's the ting, there are other radios to choose such as the Xiegu G90 which Eric also reviewed here, I think his most recent video is with him showing the Chameleon MPAS 2.0 + G90 which is a super antenna by the way, I've been making DX from Ireland to South America regularly on 20m and the FT-891.
      Anyway, the Xiegu X5105 is another rig, proper 12v battery, good tuner, it's a lot of radio for the money in a really compact form factor. It works great and a lot cheaper.
      Then there's the FT-891, 100 Watts, 5, 10, 15, watts if you want, great receiver, much quieter than the IC-7300 receiver, much better audio and amazing DNR if you need it and a lot cheaper, very under-rated radio and one I am never selling, my 7300 is up for sale while I wait for the TS-590SG. I use the FT-891 all the time and the 7300 is gathering dust.
      IF you got the money to spend on 705 the Kx3 would be a lot better radio, no scope but this doesn't allow you to hear better and it will only drain the battery faster. How much effort is it to turn the VFO and search for a signal ?
      If you really want a scope then the G90 would save you a lot of money and there's a pan-adaptor coming for it by the end of the year which will be touch screen, it's got 20w out and tuner but is around the same size as the FT-891 just a little lighter, the 891 of course has 100 Watts and with 4S 8.4AH LiFeP04 battery I can run 100W SSB for hrs. I'm just not a fan of the SDR audio, I prefer good Superhet Analogue sound, sdr's seem to introduce a harshness to the Audio I do not like.
      Just my opinion.

    Sorry if the price is right nobody buys the part, I heard or read something from 1400 €! The part for 350-500 € would be ok everything about it, people buy the parts from China and are top devices! So hope Icom does what because the part is really interesting!

    • @W-733_KWX
      @W-733_KWX 3 года назад

      Chinese radios are NOT top devices ; yes they seem to be (with their quirks) until they eventually fail (and they will) and you'll be happy to send that back to China.
      Not for me, I stick to I or K for the moment, as Y is made in China.

    • @o00scorpion00o
      @o00scorpion00o 4 года назад

      You could bring a resonant antenna and that's fine until you hear a really great DX station on a band your antenna isn't resonant on and then you'll be saying, "damn, should have got the Kx3" :-)
