Mixed Media Experiments: Masking Fluid

- I've been curious about masking fluid for a while now and seeing it on a list of materials for a course I'm taking gave me the perfect excuse to finally buy some! For better or worse, I rarely read instructions before I experiment on my own first. This video is me walking blindly with masking fluid, attempting to use it with acrylic paint instead of watercolors (where I've usually seen it used).

The masking fluid can and will ruin brushes if you're not careful. Certainly don't use a good brush.
I use silicon tips, pipettes or other tools.
I have used masking fluid with acrylics. Enjoy using it. Turns out cool I think.
Thank you for the info! ❤️❤️❤️
I adore experiments! I've used masking fluid for years in watercolor. I'm a total newbie with acrylics and can't wait to see what happens. Thanks so much for sharing!
Yay! Have fun experimenting! ❤️❤️❤️
That was mind-blowing! Now I am pondering if it would work to apply masking fluid on paper, let it dry, then make a gel print. Hmmm....
Oooooh, let me know what happens if you try it! 🤗
I love how straight up you went to drawing .. love
❤️❤️❤️
A square rubber cement eraser is ideal for masking fluid. It can handle fragile and troublesome areas that are masked. Plus no easier shards all over or embedding into any paint that is not fully cured.
Thank you for the reminder! I have one of those - I’ll have to dig it out. 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Great experiment! Gotta try it with acrylics, too. p.s. Hope that didn't kill your brush! To prevent that, put some soap on your brush bristles before dipping it into the masking fluid.
I used a cheap brush just in case but it’s actually perfectly fine 👍❤️
Great experimenting! Masking fluid is really ideal for watercolour. I've used vaseline/water mix as a masking fluid on a gelliplate with acrylic. I wonder if acrylic inks would work better with the masking fluid you are using. 😊😊😊
Yes!! I’ve been thinking about trying it with acrylic inks since I made that video! ❤️
I do love your commentary as you add and obliterate. Half the time I am screaming 'don't do that' but then you always make it work. It gives me a bit more confidence to cover up the bits I love which I find hard!
Thank you ☺️ it takes a lot of practice to cover things up - I’m STILL working on it too! ❤️❤️❤️
Than you for sharing your experiment .If you want to find out your masking fluid you can take a photo after each layer.
Thanks for the idea! It was less that I couldn’t see the masking fluid and more that I didn’t pay attention to it 😅😂🤣
The specks were from heat drying masking fluid. I believe they don’t recommend using heat
Aha! Thanks for the tip! 🤗
I have masking fluid that goes on blue. I've also never used it. So this is perfect.
I’m so glad! ❤️ If I had it to do over again, I’d thin the paints a bit so I can still access the masking fluid lol Or at least I won’t cover it with multiple layers of acrylic 🤗
Oooh. Never thought of using acrylics with masking fluid. We sure do learn from your experiences. The end results are fantastic!!
Thanks so much! ❤️
Thank you for sharing this excellent tip for masking fluid. I always associated it with watercolor.
❤️❤️❤️
Hi Jackie, i love to watch your "experimental " videos, they are always encouraging me to be braver and try new ideas so thank you !!!
also, can you please send me a link to the blue towel paper that u use, (there are all kind from what i so on the net) we don't have it here, the ones that we have are structured and i don't like the effect they leave.
Thank you 💜
Sara
Sure thing! Here’s a link to the ones I use - I fear they may be ridiculously expensive for you to buy overseas, but here’s hoping you can get them for a reasonable price: amzn.to/4aluLHB ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart thank you 🙏😘
@@jackieschomburgart it is indeed ridiculously expensive 😢will have to do with what we have here…
You ARE awesome! Thank you-- Very good at teaching too!
🙋♀️😍
I’m so glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
Love those - absolutely beautiful. I just bought some of that masking fluid so looking forward to seeing what turns out. Thanks Jackie x
You are so welcome 🤗 Have fun! ❤️
Love the results Jackie! Thx for sharing
Thanks so much! 😊
Those came out good.
Thanks! ❤️
Such a fantastic experiment, with awesome and unique results! I have always used a crepe eraser whenever I remove masking fluid. My fave is Pebeo drawing fluid, as it's blue instead of white, so you're able to see where you put it (unless it's under lots of layers like yours was)! Check out the artist Alison Watt, on her channel she uses masking fluid with acrylics very successfully! Thanks for sharing your incredible talents and your valuable time, Jackie!!
Thanks for the info - I’ll try a crepe eraser next time! ❤️❤️❤️
Art gum pick up eraser is made for masking fluid! But it still requires thin layers.
Great tip! Thanks! ☺️
Hi Jackie, just discovered your channel and loving it!!!! May I ask about your paint set up in your tray? Are they acrylic paints? It looks like tracing paper or baking paper on top of a damp cloth. Is this a good way of keeping your acrylics from drying out ? Many thanks xx
Yes and yes! You’re exactly right on both counts :)
Hopefully I can make it❤️
🤞🤞🤞
I bought a cheap pack of writing lined paper for 89 cents, to remove paint.
Great idea!
Do we have to create an account on your website in order to take the free class?
Hi Valerie! 👋🏻 No account needed (you don’t get a password to log in again or anything), but you do have to register.
This is an interesting idea. I tried to find the free collage workshop on April 5 but only found one for 45$ on the 12th.
can you help me find the right one please!
If you follow the link and scroll down below the April 12th class you’ll find it 😀
@@JinnyCJ thank you!.... do we just go to her website on the day and time?
Hi Sara! @sarawelder1 You need to register for the free class (add it to your “cart” on my website then check out - no charge, but you will need to complete the transaction so that I can send you the zoom link for the workshop ☺️). Let me know if you have additional questions and I hope to see you there! ❤️
What is the green you use ? Where to purchase or do you mix it ?
The celadon green? It’s Titan green pale from golden :)
@@jackieschomburgart lol no wonder I couldn't find it I was looking for celadon . Thanks Jackie. Your videos keep me motivated, exploring and working
I might be remembering wrong, but I think there is a blue masking fluid that then dries white or clear. That way you can see where you applied it but then it won't affect the colors you use.
I could still see the masking fluid when it was on the surface - it was glossy and stood out from the white paper - I just wasn’t paying attention 😂 I lost track of the layers underneath the acrylic.
