She is the best that ever came into this world. Hope she runs for president one day. She will certainly get my vote. Go for it Grace. And thank you so much Petra. It is obvious that you love Grace as much as so many of us do
Her subdued bluesy vocal singing River is phenomenal. It's so mature and confident. I get why she wishes that she had written this song because it suits her so well. Here's hoping she pursues soul/blues in some of her own future compositions. Grace is in the vanguard of a musical renaissance that's been a long time coming.
I found the guy who originally sang this after finding out it was a cover and listened to his music from. Watching this angel (disguised as a kid) sing it in a more mature and soulful way than the songs owner. Grace reminds me of myself as a kid in that she is such a wide old soul and has a confidence that is so strong I have no idea where it comes from. Too bad at 35 years old I'm such a different person it's like I'm jealous of my 13 year old self
One thing I liked about this is that it shows just how different her voice is. Her guitarist ,Destiny Petrel, sings with her and she has a good voice. But, listening to them both sing at the same time just shows how much different Grace's voice is than other people it's is so compelling, emotional, and I don't know the right word that explains it but I love it.
To Properely sing that song takes a certain level of understanding and depth of feeling that You don't normally see in a thirteen year old. Once again Grace shows off Her maturity through Her artistic talent. She's an Amazing girl and thank You for sharing that with all Your fans too. Lots of Love from the USA Petra... Gene Johnson
This little lady never ceases to amaze me. The first time I heard this I had tears flowing down my face by the end. She’s a heart felt individual with real soul. Good review Petra. I’m so glad I found her.
What I like about Grace V., is she brings her own stile tò her music, her stamp like no other artist. It's almost like a new kind of music and it's coming our way right now..
👌What a great exhibition about how almost all of us feel Grace. I think the same way you do Petra. Grace lives the music and songs, whether it's hers or covers. In addition, her throat is super expressive even when it doesn't require a big effort at high notes. It's impressive how her voice and her person projects emotions 💞 That's why many of us think that her talent goes beyond music, and she can be an artist in theater or cinema. Actually, even in different roles beyond art. Ha 😁 well. Try to say which Grace's song or performance is the fav one, it's almost impossible as you know. For saying a special moment for me in Grace's career, I'll say ACL 1. You know; her first big concert, at Austin this past October 7th 🙌😍
The ACL was a milestone in her conception that she is using at her concerts. ACL did not sing this song yet, but then she became part of her tour. It's a shame he does not include Darkness Keeps Chasing Me.
I love grace and I love the way you reacts to her. I can see in your eyes that you realy like the way she has grown like a singer and a songwriter. Petra really I love you
Petra; you always make me feel a vase ray of emotions when you sing, read one of your poems, or acting, your interruption of "Snow White" always move me deeply and I don't understand Swedish dialog! never let go of your dreams keep expressing yourself in all aspect of the art world! I believe in you and your talents and always have my friend!
As an accomplished artist Grace can perform for MTV with the high standards of the recording sessions as here. Folk is definitely a part of Grace's world.
Check out the original: ruclips.net/video/0Hegd4xNfRo/видео.html . The video is very gritty, and not to take anything away from Leon, but personally, I have to say I think that Grace sang it with more feeling, more soulfully. I think Grace has established herself as an Indie singer instead of a pop star. Can you believe the depth and soulfulness of her voice? I also like the fact that singing this was her idea after she heard it playing in the background somewhere, nobody brought it to her.
Thank you for the link to the original video. I knew nothing about the song before Grace sang it. It's a lament about the problem of violence in the American black community. I love Grace's version of it but I hesitate to fully endorse her singing it. It's an experience she doesn't have to deal with. I just wish people would find peace and stop killing each other. Love you Grace, thank you for bringing this song to everyone's attention.
Leon & Grace are adding to an ancient musical tradition. For example, "Down in the River to Pray" was recorded by Alison Krauss in 2000, Arlo Guthrie in 1970, and Lead Belly in 1940. It was published in 1867 and probably sung by slaves long before that.
There is nobody even remotely similar to Grace. This girl is so Unique in her singing style and although this is a cover, her originals are also absolutely unique. Simon Cowell has said that Grace is a pioneer and is going to change popular music forever, and he knows what he is talking about,
I couldn’t disagree more. I’m a thirteen year old songwriter and I don’t steal lyrics from other songwriters. She has mentioned this lyric in (I’m pretty sure) 3 songs. They all say “I listen to music.” Some of her songs sound similar as in chords. It’s not hard to come up with chords. I’ll post a separate song of mine. Her range is so limited as well. My range can go from notes like C3 to F6. Hers is very deep which I’m not into.
I wish I could show you my true self I wish you wouldn’t be so in genuine Can you sympathize for me? I have friends who are going though things No way out of this endless maze I’m drowning in my river of tears Feeling the suffering of those around me This is where I emerge myself Sorry if you don’t like me I wish I could bring you to this place in time But it’s in my messy piece of mind Turn around when you can Due to the lack of exits Do things while you can Because life is a time bomb Ready to blow up Don’t leave the issue to grow Because your creating an inferno Don’t burn down your city of happiness It’s the only thing keeping you safe Tell me how it feels to be The one who creates the inferno (Chorus) Get back into reality Not into your little fantasy It isn’t building a city It’s starting a massacre Let’s stop this disaster From happening any further By letting our past fly To say a healthy goodbye Good night Sleep tight Don’t let your demons bite You just got a scratch Now it’s 5 now it’s 6 Killing your meadows Won’t make them grow The steepness of your hill Is starting to show By the way this song isn’t totally done but I just really love the original ness of the lyrics ◦
Thank you for this reaction video. It's kind of strange that Grace makes my eye's well up so easily even after hearing the songs many times, I guess I have that same button to the emotions that you have talked of when listening to other songs by Grace. It's not a bad thing though it's really soul cleansing without leaving any bitterness in your spirit. Hard to pinpoint but I think you know what I mean. I enjoy your reactions and I confess to mostly being here for Grace reviews but I have started to look at your other reviews of late. Great work and thanks again.
Love your Grace reactions! I agree with everything you said. Keep up the entertaining and engaging videos. I love them..... From Northern California during winter, we're cold but fiery. Literally.
I love her cover. It was raw, raspy, and cracky (everything I love about her). pure, nothing but her. Converted it to an MP3 file and put it on my iPhone.
As always, a great reaction. Petra has such great timing when interjecting comments during the video - they don't detract at all from the overall quality of the video. Almost seamless. And intro and concluding remarks are always just the right length. Excellent job, Petra. As for Grace's video: I don't think anyone could sing this song better. It is so easy to put too much personal emotion into a song, but Grace's rendition reads the emotion of the song and transmits it to the listener, so that what we hear is the heart and soul of the song communicated by Grace. It has her imprimatur, of course, yet it is analogous to listening to Joshua Bell playing his Strad. A curious thing IMO about this song is that it is perfect, even though the first chorus is slightly out of sync for a moment. Perfectly imperfect, imperfectly perfect. I'm looking forward to hearing how others perform this music.
Hi Petra, I just loved this song. I think that Grace makes up her mind to "Own" every song she sings. My favorite song is still "Beautiful thing", but, I also like "better life" and "darkness keeps chasing me" from her new album. Thank you for reacting to this song and remember you are awesome and keep being you. Bob
What I really like and respect so much about Grace is that she does not want to be classified as being a pop star or classified as any kind of genre artist. Yes, Grace is a pioneer in the music industry. During her journey on AGT she followed her gut and she didn't compromise. I could go on and on about all the things I admire about Grace but I'll stop here
petra i have always loved your reactions to the rising star, Grace Vanderwaal. And i always notice that you never wear makeup, to show your beauty....just like grace does'nt need auto tone for her beautiful voice...just like alot of native woman who were strong and beautiful, and by that, i'm just saying....why take away of what you already have.
Did it to me again!! We need to stop this!! LOL This girl has more soul in her voice than the original artist and he is really good. Not sure where it comes from but she definitely has it.
Steve Outdoors she sure got soul and did a good job here , but sorry to say that leon's original is untouchable, it's hard to describe but her singing still lacks something that only can be found on leon's voice ... or maybe just personal preference haha
To sing a soulful religious song, you first have to have a soul and second you need to believe. Compared to the original song written by Leon Bridges.....There is no comparison! She Owns it now. Thank you Leon for writing it and thank you Grace for making it beautiful. And thank you Petra for reacting to it.
Great reaction! Some people are saying Leon Bridges wrote this song for Grace to sing someday, even though he wrote it before she got well-known. I like this cover, but I like the one from Irving Plaza where she plays the tambourine just a little better. Everything you said was so perfect.
Leon released this song 2015 so she was 10, songs not that old was inspired by an old gospel song used in the movie O Brother where art thou - Down to the River to Pray sang by Alison Krauss
You know, as music fans we usually discover an artist after they have labored in obscurity for years until they suddenly have that break out song that launches them onto the worlds consciousness, but we all have an extraordinary opportunity when it comes to Grace. From her audition on America's Got Talent to her victory on said show and into her recording career we are getting a rare chance to watch a future super star's talent blossom with each project she undertakes and it's a wonder to behold. While i love her voice, it is her ability to write songs or interpret others work that bring out such deep emotions from us that makes her not only unique, but in my opinion, a musical genius.
This performance of River from Grace i think is when she came into her own. I shed a tear EVERY time i watch. She is so damn good. I get goose bumps. May Grace go on for years. Love her to pieces.
Started watching this reaction weeks ago, got sidetracked and never finished. I'm back. 😉 The things you've said about Grace are true about you too. You are very good at making us feel. The emotion you show is so real. Grace singing this song brings me to tears.
she reminds me in many ways of Janis Joplin.....some movements of Joe Cocker.....she is already far above the current talent out there.....she should be the closing act in a concert!!
you literally feel every word piercing through ur soul goosebumps, thank u for doin this reaction i have searched for one n this kid is blessed beyond belief
Your reaction was like my own . But love to see the same rwacrion as me from an artist like yourself. Don't usually play reactions but tried one from ' River ' and so glad you were wonderful !!!!!
Always love to revisit you, Petra. Came back to listen to this yet again. Oh, such a great performance. Once again she sings it better than the original artist, like "A-Team" and "In My Blood" and every other cover she does. I listened to Leon's SNL version; was a similar venue. If I were a top artist... Agent: "Got a call from Grace Vanderwaal." Artist: "Uh oh." Agent: "She wants permission to cover your latest hit." Artist: "Hell no! She'll make me sound like I was sleep walking!"
Grace VanderWaal is a very exceptional young Lady when she won AGT I couldn’t have been more happy for someone. Her attitude is amazing.she has grown stronger vocally since AGT. this song River a cover was preformed in 2017 it’s know 2020 and she’s 16 😳 wow wow and wow again. she’s a great young Lady I hope she can always be her self and remember where she came from throughout her career, it’s going to be a awesome one. ( congratulations to you Mom and Dad for doing an amazing job raising her.) I hope she sings more contemporary Christian type of songs as well if she sings that type.
This is a cover of the song originally written by Leon Bridges. Thank you Leon for writing such an awesome song. I am sorry though. You wrote the song, but I can't imagine anyone singing it as good as she does. So thank you again for writing Grace such a beautiful song. It's hers now as far as I'm concerned.
Hi Petra, bit late I know, have watched many times but never commented, this is probably my favorite cover from Grace, riptide at the Brooklyn Library being second, Grace has such a beautiful soulful voice and while she may not be the greatest technical singer, as you say music is not about technicality but emotion, and Grace delivers every time, whether covers or originals. great reaction as always.
Not my favorite song. BUT -- I have to admit that Grace puts so much emotion into it that I can't help but love the performance. As others have said before, Grace could sing the phone book (for those of us old enough to remember those LOL) and make it great. And your reaction captures this entirely. Great job, Petra. Your reactions always move me.
Hi, Petra. Wonderful reaction, as always, followed by meaningful commentary. This is one fantastic performance by Grace. The more I listen to it, the more I am impressed by the nuances in her singing--the subtle dynamics, the lovely ornaments and melismas which do not become ends in themselves, and her skillful control of breaks, squeaks, and rasps. This girl is really learning how to masterfully play her voice like a fine musical instrument. Now that we're between albums and probably won't hear many new songs from her for quite a while, I hope she covers a lot more great songs like this and others which will showcase her extraordinary talent. I've got a list a mile long. BTW, if you want to hear Leon Bridges singing his song, here's a link. It's an emotion-laden song, and he performs it beautifully. Must confess, though, I like Grace's version better (but I'm biased). ruclips.net/video/bsPeNrOzzZ8/видео.html
I just wish I could get a download fro my mp3 . I work out in the fields all day and you can imagine what difference this would make to have this song ....sigh
matt dimascio you are spot on with that statement personally I think Miley and Grace should do something together I love them both so much and really they have the same goal to make the world a better place they both care so much about people the planet animals ect..anyway great statement
Petra Reacts is biggest fan ever. Love watching your videos about Grace! I only live miles away from her compared to you and you have actually met her. More than likely I never will!
One of these days I will manage to be firrrssssttt :D :D Currently I try to hit million-marks of the 'major' Vanderwaals videos as closely as possible with a comment. It is fun
I mentioned before about Grace singing impromptu when she was 3 years old. I was filmed by her mom, Tina, and can be found under her vlog "Tina VanderWaal". While the beginning is random with delightful attitude, near the end she shows emotion when she found out that someone was no longer her friend.while recalling being close when they were babies. Try the following link for direct access. ruclips.net/video/zgP0XxCcGFg/видео.html
Here's a link to another original song that Grace wrote with Dylan Kay (her music teacher and guitarist for Jar of Hearts). The song is called "The difference is the point" and its a fun, upbeat folk song. They sang the song in the coffee house where she began her public performances, so I assume it was before her AGT performances. m.ruclips.net/video/e8LG-VXE6ck/видео.html
I totally agree with you about being emotionally connected with a song and conveying that to the listener. You may want to check out Lara Fabian singing Je Suis Malade...........I always say while many singers "Sing" a song, Lara Fabian "Becomes" the song. This is one absolutely incredible performance. She has to be one of the best. Please react to Lara Fabian "Je suis malade" ruclips.net/video/aIbsrEyWddk/видео.html
Hi Petra, I really love Grace and everything that she sings. She does this song in all of her concerts and puts a wonderful emotion into it. The song was written by Leon Bridges and it’s been around for a few years. It was popularized over again in an American TV mini series called Big Little Lies. If you get a chance, listen to Leon Bridges version which is also amazing. I’d love to see a reaction video of you doing this and then you can compare the wonderful emotion that Grace gives to the song versus the pure soul that Leon Bridges gives to it. This is the link to one of his better performances of it. ruclips.net/video/JbLYY4-qGgg/видео.html
Great performance. 👍 Reaction request, Julie Anne's "This is what you came for - Into you" medley: ruclips.net/video/yypNSrWXwGc/видео.html Something upbeat for the New Year.
Funny, maybe Angelina Jordan will cover a Grace song some day
She has the greatest range in her voice according to her emotions
I found the guy who originally sang this after finding out it was a cover and listened to his music from. Watching this angel (disguised as a kid) sing it in a more mature and soulful way than the songs owner. Grace reminds me of myself as a kid in that she is such a wide old soul and has a confidence that is so strong I have no idea where it comes from. Too bad at 35 years old I'm such a different person it's like I'm jealous of my 13 year old self
Petra, thanks for picking this. I listen to Grace's River just about every day. This MTV performance will be a landmark for her.
i think she did it better at the Troudabour-LA... ruclips.net/video/qVCdi4CwBU0/видео.html
One thing I liked about this is that it shows just how different her voice is. Her guitarist ,Destiny Petrel, sings with her and she has a good voice. Fantastic
Grace has such a voice that I have goosebumps. Grace is a miracle.
This little lady never ceases to amaze me. The first time I heard this I had tears flowing down my face by the end. She’s a heart felt individual with real soul. Good review Petra. I’m so glad I found her.

Petra, you react like we feel. It's so communal.
Grace said that "River" was the song that she felt most like she wished she had written.
She like a book keeps getting better and how amazing it is to watch her grow .
As an accomplished artist Grace can perform for MTV with the high standards of the recording sessions as here. Folk is definitely a part of Grace's world.
She is soooo talented. Just wow 😮
Hi Petra. Another beautiful reaction by a beautiful person. I love watching you react and just be yourself. Thank you for being you Petra.
I love that girl. She is miles deep.
Love her voice she truly is a gift to music
Wonderful wonderful young lady once again great reaction

You should listen to the last part of this video where she explains how she found the song and how she wishes she wrote it.
There is nobody even remotely similar to Grace. This girl is so Unique in her singing style and although this is a cover, her originals are also absolutely unique. Simon Cowell has said that Grace is a pioneer and is going to change popular music forever, and he knows what he is talking about,
The only other person I saw put emotion into every song she was singing was Judy Garland
She is the best. And while I love all her originals...this is my favorite of all. SO MUCH SOUL from a 13 year old......WOW!!!
I couldn’t disagree more. I’m a thirteen year old songwriter and I don’t steal lyrics from other songwriters. She has mentioned this lyric in (I’m pretty sure) 3 songs. I wish I could show you my true self
I wish you wouldn’t be so in genuine
Can you sympathize for me?
I have friends who are going though things
No way out of this endless maze
I’m drowning in my river of tears
Feeling the suffering of those around me
This is where I emerge myself
Sorry if you don’t like me
I wish I could bring you to this place in time
But it’s in my messy piece of mind
Turn around when you can
Due to the lack of exits
Do things while you can
Because life is a time bomb
Ready to blow up
Don’t leave the issue to grow
Because your creating an inferno
Don’t burn down your city of happiness
It’s the only thing keeping you safe
Tell me how it feels to be
The one who creates the inferno
(Chorus)
Get back into reality
Not into your little fantasy
It isn’t building a city
It’s starting a massacre
Let’s stop this disaster
From happening any further
By letting our past fly
To say a healthy goodbye
Good night
Sleep tight
Don’t let your demons bite
You just got a scratch
Now it’s 5 now it’s 6
Killing your meadows
Won’t make them grow
The steepness of your hill
Is starting to show
By the way this song isn’t totally done but I just really love the original ness of the lyrics
◦
I wouldn't touch it les, it looks trolly to me

I have been waiting for you to see this one💕🎶 Such a perfect song for our Miss Grace!!! All the FEELS💕🎶 Thanks Petra!!! We love you!

Yay I was waiting for you to react to this. Thanks for another great video Petra, you’re one of the best reaction channels out there!
Bob

Petra! Love your reactions of Grace!
I think I like her Troubadour performance even better and there's another one in NY that is a little different too.
Due to its Young age perhaps, some people still believe in a fire straw...Grace is this flame that warms the soul and it will have no end...
To sing a soulful religious song, you first have to have a soul and second you need to believe. Compared to the original song written by Leon Bridges.....There is no comparison! She Owns it now. I prefer the Troubadour performance it was the first time she sang it live it had just a little more emotion in it.
yes, Troubadour. Comes immediately after ACL1 in general for me.

Beautiful rendition of this gospel song. It transcends, thank u grace for this cover and bringing attention to this amazing artist. #leonbridges
You should check out her love performance at Irving Plaza she is absolutely asome
you literally feel every word piercing through ur soul goosebumps, thank u for doin this reaction i have searched for one n this kid is blessed beyond belief
Agent: "Got a call from Grace Vanderwaal."
Artist: "Uh oh."
Agent: "She wants permission to cover your latest hit."
Artist: "Hell no! She'll make me sound like I was sleep walking!"
One of her best performances. Love it
Hey Petra ! hope you had an amazing Christmas , all the best wishes for the future young lady - and happy new year !!!!
After I listen to the song and feelings that you explain, I feel like relief very much. My steps are very light when I walk out! amazing
William Collins Yes yes I couldn't agree more took the words right out of my mouth this is definitely Grace's song now
Grace is the musical unicorn
I like Grace's version better than the original
Not The One false nothing touches the original
i love you petra.
Muito bom!!!...Sempre trazendo excelente conteúdo.
Well done Petra ..❤ ... as a tear runs down my cheek.
She is magnificent and you are so right about Grace putting her emotions into songs
This is her song now
What other child can sin this song like she understands it?
Love this song.
love you both. great stuff
Grace reminded me of Miley Cyrus when she's just singing. Not crazy Miley. Listen to Miley do a cover of Jolene you'll see what I mean.
matt dimascio you are spot on with that statement personally I think Miley and Grace should do something together I love them both so much and really they have the same goal to make the world a better place they both care so much about people the planet animals ect..anyway great statement
Petra Reacts is biggest fan ever. Love watching your videos about Grace! I only live miles away from her compared to you and you have actually met her. More than likely I never will!
L.S.D.-happy¡¡¡
Early squad !!!
One of these days I will manage to be firrrssssttt :D :D Currently I try to hit million-marks of the 'major' Vanderwaals videos as closely as possible with a comment. It is fun
Petra you are a wonderful person
only 13!!!!

Happy new year! Apologies if I have already requested this but you would love Eva Igo's solo Evanescence! It is stunning
The KAR National Dance Comp version is the best one imo
She puts a lot of thought in those lyrics.
Kind of wonder what would happen with her paired with Sawyer Fredericks.
They only live about 100 miles apart.
It’s a COVER from LEON BRIDGES.
I think this is a cover from a while back
Hi Petra, I really love Grace and everything that she sings.
