I didn't see this until Sept. 2024, but it was worth waiting for. I love all of your videos, but this one was particularly fun - and funny. You laughed a lot, and so did I - just what I needed today!

So fun to sew with you and watch your thinking process. Don’t we all think these things through so similarly.....😜. We are in the middle of a huge snow storm in Southern Ontario today so I’m cozied up in my sewing room piecing the blocks for the Crabapple Hill “Over The River And Through The Woods” quilt. My mind has been doing some of the same process as I’m trying to get the flying geese to line up right for the outside border. You are playing on my iPad right beside my sewing machine. I have made 6 project bags. Four were Christmas gifts and now I want to make a few more for me. It’s so fun to choose the fabrics. I fold the back over and stitch but I do like the extra colour around the end so I may do a couple that way. Using wonder clips holds the vinyl really well and don’t put holes.

Journey yes! Love the opening with the view of Arizona and it’s open roads. This is my first time and definitely a favorite from now. Yes I’ve made with vinyls so I can do most importantly my sanity and truly testing out the zippers.
You are so real with packing and graces when you needed a rotary cutter.
I’m down sizing in general but want my bits and bobs are in cute project bags.
You are so cute with moving forward. I’m very limited also with space so figuring out clean designs that is practical.
You and your dear husband continue sharing we are there too.

Thanks for sharing your adventures in project bag making. I really like your fabric. On my Janome I have to switch the place where the foot attaches to the machine to the opposite side of the foot in order to have the needle switch sides...don't move the needle. Maybe this machine is the same. I have never been able to get Hobbs fusible batting to fuse and I have tried both a dry iron and steam. My fabric just falls off no matter which way I try to fuse it.

You deserve a lot of credit for doing a bag on that little machine. I have Janome Jem as well and its wonderful - but small space and small machine = a challenge. You are so enjoyable to watch. We get spoiled with our bigger machine with the bells and whistles. Great job! ( and it was a tutorial!)

I had been waiting for this project bag to be made and they so sweet...awesome fabrics . Made me laugh you losing your glasses ...happens to me constantly..I need glasses to find my glasses and then need to nail then to my head 😂..I’m darn sure they grow legs and disappear on purpose😂 😘💐

Journey is a great word for me. I am on a journey through aging, quilting, hand appliqué with wool, and embroidery. I am on a journey with a newly retired mate, living without a pet, having wonderful women friends my age. I am on a journey about learning to shop and cook a lot less food. So many journeys, so little time. Anna, journey is a great word.

Dear LoraineL I too am on a journey. Every day I journey in my tiny sewing room and want to cry. I have purchased so much BEAUTIFUL fabrics and pattern over the years. Have made many, many quilts for family, and for sale. Entered many shows and won wonderful prizes and ribbons. However, I feel badly that my time here is limited, I am 83 years old and very tired. But dog gone it, I want to finish all that stash! My journey has been long, but I am not ready to give up. My journey is NOT over. Happy sewing to you and everyone on our journey. Virginia

Yes, this is the just the video I have been waiting for. Watching you sew that project bag made my day. I struggle with many of the same things. Where are my glasses, my scissors, my pin cushion, and why isn't this machine just doing the right thing. Totally made my snowy morning and have inspired me to get going on my own project bag. Thank you, Anna, for working through the process for us all! Visual learner here.

    Fun to sew with you:)
And I could sympathize with the difficulty you were having with your machine. I happen to have the same one that I also used for travel and it gave me fits every time. Finally replaced it with the same brand I sew on at home..a Bernina just a smaller model. A little heavier but operation is similar...sure relieved my frustration! Also I ran into another tutorial for project bags today...by the Fat Quarter Shop. Great suggestions for sewing on vinyl..using the tissue paper that comes with it and binder clips to hold it while sewing. So helpful:)

I learned when making some similarly constructed small bags, to put a piece of the paper, leftover from my fusible product, over the vinyl while sewing it. It doesn’t stick to the presser foot that way. I also use the wonder clips instead of pins with vinyl.

    • @gaildean559
      @gaildean559 5 лет назад

I use the wonder clips too. Holds everything really well. A piece of tissue paper under the vinyl as you are stitching is a game changer! Also I always hand stitch the binding. If you machine stitch you will get too many holes in the vinyl in almost the same line of stitching and it weakens the strength of the vinyl. Just. Couple of notes I learned along the way making projects with vinyl. I am going to look these bag projects up.

In reference to you clip on light/magnifier. In one of my FB quilting groups, a lady had forgotten something at home. When she went back to the house, she walked into smoke. The sun was shining in her sewing room window thru the magnifier, and caught her sewing table on fire. I believe it was contained to the sewing room and no one was hurt.

    Hi Anna,
For a temporary design wall, you could use the back of a vinyl table cloth that you could tape on a door,
Or wall using painters tape. Just roll it up when done. Also foam core boards at the dollar store. Use for blocks or put several together. Lean them up against a wall. See you at Road to Ca., my first time also.

Hi Anna! When my husband and I travel we were having the same issues with WiFi, in campgrounds or just on the road. What I did was buy a Solis hot spot, about $169, then you buy time. Twenty fours hours of time cost about $8 to $9/ day. You still run into some dead spot areas but it works better than trying to share WiFi. I am eleven days out on my knee replacement, things are going great. I’m just impatient. I have my Sue Spargo kits, Primative Gatherings and cross stitch kits prepped and waiting for me to start since my toes are above my nose. Your videos and others have totally kept me entertained these past few days when I was not moving well and my head was foggy ! Thank you! Safe travels.

I have never seen you have so much trouble, (but maybe that's where G comes in to edit)!
2nd set packaged up & always in the camper! I look forward to getting my machine back from the Doctor, so I can sew again....been a long 8 months ! I have alot of catching up to do - look forward to stitching up some project bags for my stitching, might just be able to get organized a little more!
    See you next video 👍😎

I’ve been making a By Annie bag and using a Teflon foot when sewing the vinyl. Works great.

I am not screaming, I am giggling because you are basically doing what I do. I talk to my machine, fabric, thread etc. and I try to hold my tongue right to assure good luck.

Anna, have you tried Martelli products? I love their rotary cutters. I’ve used them for over 20 years! In case you need to buy another one, might want to try theirs. I got mine at Road to California.😀

Easy projects for the road. They can also be made with quilted placemats from the dollar store and leftover jelly roll strips.

You just might want to make a list the next time you go on a quilt roadies adventure!! hahahahaha This IS a tutorial for me, although I've made a few bags myself. Your's always look so neat and tidy. I had asked once how you did your binding - like quilt binding or just flip the back over to the front. I guess I'll soon find out, if I'd be quiet and watch the video, right?? As much as we love your videos and following your travels, yes you do have your own life and we don't always have to be a part of it. Carry on, McDuff and don't worry about 36 hours of uploading. That's just crazy!! I mean, in this day and age of hi tech, you shouldn't have to put up with that. I sometimes think these companies can't keep up with their own technology. At least that's what a Shaw repairman once told me! And if that's coming from him, you have to know it's the truth!! Thanks for sharing, Anna. Take care. Hugs!!

I enjoy watching other people sew because you can sometimes learn a tip or two. I think in the case of these type of bags that I would sew the binding from the back and then do the machine stitching on the front and instead of piecing the binding together at the end I would just trim it and tuck it in to the beginning - if that makes sense. I've made a few of these but I usually just self bind but I do like the way a real binding looks! Maybe next time it would help to bring the machine manual and tools/feet. Happy Sewing!

Anna there is also a SAS Fabric's on Speedway past Craycroft that sells everything at a reasonable price. Joanns also sells vinyl as well.

Tissue paper under the vinyl helps it slide better. Use clips instead of pins to hold the pieces together. No holes in vinyl.

Anna, I too struggle with not enough space for a design wall. What I have learned to do is make design boards. Lori Holt has a fabulous tutorial to make them. They can be whatever size you would like them to be. I have a couple 12 x 12 and 1 large foam board uncut size I've made so far. To simply make without any frills you just need a dollar store or walmart foam board. Hot glue batting to it. Wallah you have a design board that can be tucked under a bed, behind a couch, etc. Now you can lay all your block pieces out and have next to your machine. I sew, finger press, then lay them back down so I don't loose the design. Of course take a picture before sewing in case something happens. Lol. I hope this helps. It has for me and I can take the board to the ironing area and back to machine without loosing my design or getting it turned around. You can get up and walk away from it easily without having pieces everywhere. I have a homemade log ladder I then hang my rows onto or you can use the back of a chair to drape them over to keep neat and orderly. Good luck!!! I love your channel!!

Anna your project bag turned out very nice. I love watching you. I’m so glad to know I’m not the only one that struggles keeping things in my sight. I mean sometimes I never left my chair and I can’t find it. Just a thought. Seam a seam has like a quarter inch tape and I have ironed that on to make hems and then did my top stitch. We need to find an adhesive that does not require heat to bond the vinyl into place before stitching and also position the zipper in place before stitching. I see others have suggested the binder clips and parchment pap or paper that comes with the vinyl. I like the paper that comes with the vinyl because it is very light weight and if you are using it between the zipper foot and vinyl it is easy to tear away. I so enjoyed your tutorial. It has encouraged me to make a few more. 🤗💖

You always make me smile. My tip is to invest a buck or so in a plastic pencil box. It makes an awesome accessory box and mine holds markers, spare needles etc. I have one for each machine.
