Looks like a keeper . The potential to have a warm and comfortable fully functional cabin is there. I would take this in a heartbeat and a large part has already been done. Go for it man!!
The plastic tote is for water. Most likely a rain catchment system since you have solar and propane to run the stove, which means you have an off-grid cabin. Keep the white propane heater because it is a new one it is not old
I've worked on a lot worse in the 1980s and 90s. As in the whole cabin sitting on the ground because the posts rotted out. The sills had to be replaced. Yours is in good shape for one built in 1938. I doubt zoning would allow a new one to be built that close to the water. A previous owner spent a lot on windows, doors, appliances, etc. I'm surprised that propane fridge was not stolen. You have a solid start. I'd start at the bottom and work up. Jack it to be level and well supported. Then close it in with the wood shingles repaired and a no-leak roof by end of summer. That pattern of cedar shingles takes extra time. The original builder put some love into it. Then you can do the interior on colder autumn days. Good luck. I am jealous. Thanks for the video. I am subscribed.
It looks like the previous owner jacked and leveled it before starting the other work. What he calls "sketchy structural stuff" at 6:08 is where shims were placed on the posts to bring the floor to level.
That is not an old heater on the second floor, it's brand new in current. It is actually a very high efficient gas heater and you really might want to consider using it. Clearly the tank is for water. You can catch rainwater off the roof with it.
It’s used to keep the cabin from freezing up when you go away from the camp and you fire burns out. Nothing worse that going ice fishing only to come back to a freezing cabin. Those heaters are a necessity in winter.
Looks like a new unvented propane heater. They’re very efficient. Make sure it has an oxygen sensor which automatically shuts off heater if 02 gets too low.
Looking forward to seeing your camp on the next "Maine Cabin Masters" show. :-) Seriously it looks better than I first thought it was. Thought there would be more critters inside.
That's what I was going to suggest, Maine Cabin Masters! Especially for the sketchy structural stuff. They would do a fabulous job! In Nebraska and Maine is on my bucket list for a visit! Mostly because of the show MCM! Maine is very beautiful! Great camp!
@@maryraymond8375 Yes I agree. They do a fantastic job no matter what the budget. It finally bugged me enough to look it up, the difference between a cottage, cabin and camp since they usually are used interchangeably. I googled it and it came back: Some opinions are that the shelter that has no plumbing and no electricity would be considered a camp, that a cabin is something that has some amenities but is not 4-season. A cottage, by extension, would then be something that could be lived in all year but isn't
In Maine this is correctly called a "camp" . I'm thinking you are the city boy! :-) If you were in Maine you would say "upta camp" to describe where you are going.
I think gentrification of Maine camps is all good but there is a long history, at least Downeast wise, of people moving in thinking things are simple. They are not. It all starts with when you interact with the locals or overhear the conversations. I overheard two middle aged ladies saying “well, no one locks their doors around here. “ for the next month my two dead bolted doors were unlocked everytime I return to my loft artist space Downeast. And yet if you don’t support and feed these vermin they won’t leave you alone. Good luck. I think you bought a lemon.
I’ll check the basement out first to see how the foundation is then start there and start going up check the roof you may have to replace it. The big white container is for Water. I definitely would have the wiring checked before I put the insulation in. Just a thought. Great fine!!!
There is no basement. The house is on posts. It looks like someone jacked and leveled the camp before starting the other recent work. Those boards between the posts and the sills are shims that were inserted during the leveling process. There's nothing sketchy about it.
As a Mainer, “going to camp” is life no matter the time of year. Winter and Fall for hunting and Spring and Summer and Fall enjoying the peace and warmth. This has great potential to be finished nicely without alot of money. Good luck! ❤️👍. I had a cat named Bagel 🤣❤️👍

Beautiful - I'm just an old bird now (83), but this ticks all my boxes - just get plenty of 2x6 or better to upgrade everywhere the 2x4 are trying to do their thing & work a bit at a time until you have it all done - the setting is wonderful. Those woodstoves may look small but they work. There are calculations to see if it is big enough. But that woodstove is really economic with wood. That is definitively a plus. Congratulations. I bet your purchase will be life changing.
I LOVE Maine, and I think you should renovate the house and keep it as a second home. It is way too beautiful a place to sell as I see many possibilities!
Thats not a old gas heater. Thats what they use for backup heat. You should install and have it connected to a large propane container. So its not old.

Great find - take your time, make a list, finish one thing at a time from the list. The great discouragement comes when you try too many things simultaneously. I would start with the roof, then foundation and sealing the crawlspace/basement, then the insulation, then the interior, etc....
The tank is most likely for your water. I don’t think it’s an above ground septic tank. Also, check the foundation, you may need to reinforce it. And install French drains. Definitely renovate
We had a similar cabin in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The heart💓 of the cabin in winter is the cast iron wood stove. Have fireproof liner underneath it like metal. We had an outdoor latrine and cooked on s bigger cast iron stove. Oil lamps. A big screened in porch is great. I would make sure everything is really supported but after that, it's no emergency.
Retired carpenter here.. check the bones and make sure the structure is safe first. Seems like there were all over the place with their efforts. I love it.. what a place to relax and unwind. Just a quick safety point- back in the 80's my cousin and a handful of other kids died in a cabin just like this when the propane refrigerator(which you have) EXAUST broke in the night and filled the cabin with carbon monoxide. They all died in their sleep. All the best to you!
This would be amazing if you fixed it up. It's a million dollar view. That propane gas heater isn't ancient they sell those still. It would easily heat a cabin that size especially with a wood stove. I'd switch the wood stove to a hearthstone though. Looking forward to seeing what you decide for the place. Best of Luck.
I think it is absolutely wonderful ! Are you keeping it ? I sure hope so . My idea is fix it up and make it cozy and eat some bar b que at the picnic table and see if the paddle boat floats !
I have great memories of spending summer vacays at a cabin in Maine on a lake my great uncle built by hand with the help of my uncle. Pretty rustic but we kids spent all our time beach front. Fix that place to your liking and enjoy or rent out to families to make incredible memories.💞
What did you pay for the Camp? It's gonna cost some money to get it up to code so you can get an occupancy permit. The tank is for water/rain collection. That's your water. Get the stove safe and install the upstairs gas heater. It will be below freezing in the winter. Good Luck.
Ha city slicker, no troublesome "code" occupancy permits here. The housing police haven't ruined most of Maine yet with their policy's that promote the rich and cause homelessness.
@@vicktdock Awesome! I live on 12 acres and they still have building codes and health and safety requirements. Good Luck! It looks like a great place to live. 👍❤️👏
This is beautifully perfect in so many ways! Roof and support first, would be my idea. Then, I would make sure I had electricity done safely with more outlets than I think I would need. Then I would make sure windows had screen replaced on the porch and were at least caulked around. I would make sure the woodstove is safe to use, which means not only pipe out and sturdy, but the space under and behind it needs something that is fireproof, like tile or even metal. Door on basement also. But then I would use all that insulation, definitely, it gets cold there in winter, and can be hot in summer, so that would help. That lake is so clear. In all actuality, I probably would go fishing right away and cook up some fresh fish! And, I would have to put my feet in the water too! I hope you have a wonderful time there!
Keep it. Fix it up and enjoy it with your family for years to come. It will be even more valuable if you improve the conditions, especially the structural issues which looks like an easy fix, good luck.
I retired to an old lakeside cottage in Aroostook County I bought for a song, I suspect because it's well known for being haunted ;) Maine is a different State of Existence lol
I'm blessed to have two friends how each have a camp on the same pond. the pond is a bit smaller than your pond but still heaven. I cherish the time I get to spend there every summer.
Highly recommend taking a look if you can put some Tiny Houses on it or Tent Cabins, depending on location there are small groups that are always looking for retreats. If I can figure out how I will get in touch. I have friends who hike and camp in Maine every year and they would love a spot like this if it was reasonable
Looks a brilliant project, really really like Maine. We lived in Massachusetts for a few years and visited Maine for a while. Back living in the Uk now, miss that landscape around your way. Take care Sam
We purchased a cabin in Northern Michigan a few years ago. I dates back to the late 40’s when auto workers had disposable income and many people built them for weekend getaways. It was abandoned for about 15 years and was in rough shape. I figured we shoveled about 80 lbs of raccoon crap out of the upstairs!

I absolutely love this camp! I'd rather have something just like it more than a mansion in Hollywood (or anywhere else.)
If you think Hollywood is known for mansions you are an idiot.
A mansion takes days to clean. A little cabin like this, takes about 15 minutes. Love tiny, but big enough homes like these.

Time to cal in the Maine Cabin Masters! They will go under there and jack level that camp! ❤
Keep it. What a nifty little place!
love it- lots of potential
Bet your 'basement ' is a root cellar/for veggies etc...refrigeration!
Wish I had one!
Also that gas cook stove is practically new and pipe on the wood stove is new, someone probably lived there no more than 2.years ago.
I'm blessed to have two friends how each have a camp on the same pond. the pond is a bit smaller than your pond but still heaven. I cherish the time I get to spend there every summer.
Beautiful I would love to see the progress you do to your new camp house!♥️
Highly recommend taking a look if you can put some Tiny Houses on it or Tent Cabins, depending on location there are small groups that are always looking for retreats. If I can figure out how I will get in touch. I have friends who hike and camp in Maine every year and they would love a spot like this if it was reasonable
Looks a brilliant project, really really like Maine.
We lived in Massachusetts for a few years and visited Maine for a while.
Back living in the Uk now, miss that landscape around your way.
Take care Sam
Please keep it Matthew! And post videos showing your progress. I’d love to watch the transformation!
WOWW just looking around the outside.. Its FREAKEN beautiful!!
