- This entire subdivision was bought out by a developer to built over 100 homes worth approx. 3 million dollars each. They striped most of the homes and boarded them up. For a short time they were left abandoned waiting to be demolished. First the developer clear cut all the trees. Next they started demolishing each house. I had permission to explore and film only 2 homes here as the others was boarded and sealed up. The private subdivision was built in the 1980’s. Most of the homes sit on 2 acres of land. The developer bought each home for approx. 3 million dollars each. This works out to be approx. 42 million dollars for the whole subdivision.

My father took me to my first abandoned house when I was 7 years old. I remember going into the house and a old farmer came in and told us "we better watch out as the floors are all rotten and unsafe". Ever since that day I was hooked on exploring abandoned places.

The true waste was 14 homes occupying the space for 150.
Very sad, and maddening to see super nice homes and properties destroyed, for what, greed! Yes, these people got a good bit of money for their homes, but neighborhoods like these are far and few between. These homes had nice sized yards, the new houses going in you’ll be able to shake your next door neighbors hand without either of you leaving your homes.
I know the government hates free real estate, that's for sure.

so ll these homes people lived in. and then some rich guy comes and offers 3 million for everyone and they all just accepted it and dipped? whats gonna go into this subdvision? just smaller homes?
As humans we have to do better then wasting all these resources. These subdivision debacles are all brought on by greed. The greed of the developers being allowed to do this by local governments who will overlook anything to get a bigger tax base and in the end a few walk away with all the money and the many both human and wildlife suffer the consequences. I realize my comment is off topic but I appreciate urban explorers like you Brent bringing this out in the open.

The 'getting to live there for two years free' was a great way for the developer to have their investment protected while they waited on the necessary permits to start the project.
And with the increases in housing value over those two years, the home owners could have doubled their payout, had they not accepted the offer! Bad decision on their part.

@@tomrogers9467 Based on the dated look of the two houses we explored they would not have doubled the money. Both would need about 250,000 in remodeling costs.

When developers buy out places like this, there should be a law that they have to reuse the staircases, cabinetry, fireplaces,flooring,windows, anything that can be reused. It could be donated to Habitat for Humanity,,,or better yet housing for veterans. The waste all over the world is sickening.
In my city, there is a non profit that will take down a building ...piece by piece...EVERYTHING possible to recycle or be reused is. Even the nails.
It takes a long time but it can be done.

Many are flipping the finished products to REIT funds that takeover management of the subdivision or resale of the units. They'll build frame instead of CBS concrete block just because it's faster, requires a lesser of a skillset.
And what's even more egregious? These same jerks want to talk to us about our "carbon footprint". Truly unbelievable.

Oh man, as a Canadian I am so embarrassed about our conspicuous consumption :( I remember as a young adult thinking these McMansions were the epitome of making your mark on the world.

@@gailresources3970 Jesus you keep mentioning that in every comment but as far as I watched dude only mentioned sink holes in relation to a prior location he visited. This was just developer greed. Seriously who buys homes on sink holes in order to put even more homes on said sink holes. Not very sharp.
Seeing these HUGE houses makes me appreciate my tiny home as it takes less time to clean. 😁

I live in Colorado where the homeless population has exploded (like many places) but everywhere you look there are cranes putting up new buildings. New buildings that the average person or family cannot afford. Minimum wage would have to be raised at least $25 an hour to afford to live. The greed of the world is forcing families into homelessness. Smh

I think these videos help people appreciate what they have because most people don't need or want a mansion and many old homes are built quite well with lumber that is literally no longer available
This is appalling!! Its in my town and it was a beautiful neighbourhood with mature trees. I drive past there daily and am appalled by this destruction. The mayor is very close lipped and I'm appalled the town would allow this!! Shame on them... and I've had no response to my queries about all the slaughtered trees!

@@laangel3262 They usually don't to avoid looters and vandalism. This is in York Region, Ontario, Canada. Such a beautiful mature neighbourhood with gorgeous mature trees. The trees were all razored and most were only in the perimeter of the area 😠 I'm not sure why the slaughter. 💔
Found it.. just down from where I used to live. Knew I recognized it! Vandorf side road and bayview. Used be nothing out there.

Drove by today. One house is still standing with a car in the drive. Not sure if they held out or if they haven't moved yet ... all other houses have been demolished -- down to rubble. 😢
Great explore! It amazes me that they will demo and put up cluster housing instead. Must be near easy access to main corridors for travel. Thanks for posting this. I used to live right next door and hadn’t been by in a while. Couldn’t figure what happened but suspected a developer. Surprised they were able to get all of them to sell. Todays market those house are worth way more than 3 million.
Here in Washington State we have several re-use/salvage stores that sell just about anything one can think of from old buildings and houses....even bowling ally and basketball court floors.
The structures may be water logged but there is so much in those places that can be re purposed.

There’s got to be more to this story. What are the chances that a whole development of 14 individual owners all agree to sell their homes at the same time and just walk away? Last time I was in Canada, there appeared to be plenty of vacant land, so a builder spending $3 million for each home then footing the bill for the demolition and waste removal just to build new homes is not adding up.
Canada has lots of land, but not where the city people want to live.
Based on how bad that basement flooded without a sump pump i am wondering if that played into this. I wouldn’t want to live in a place with that much flood pressure.
3 million isn't much for those homes and that property, even if they needed updating, and to answer your question, ZERO chance that all 14 would have agreed. Those are custom builds and they didn't go to the time and effort to do all that just to dump those houses.
The last home to sell was in 2020 for $1,950,000. So I think the 3 Million buyout was pretty good for the owners. Even for the last purchaser in 2020 made a million. It's a nice area. These 150 homes will be for upper middle class.

As usual Brent, GREAT explore!! Insane flooding BTW. Hey, I hope you don't mind but I'm going to be philosophical just for a moment. What's amazing to me is that the difference between a really expensive luxury home and a heap of wood and materials is one is taken care of and the other is abandoned. It's amazing to me how something so outlandishly expensive is only expensive because humans give it value.
The value is in the sweat equity it takes to build the product.😁
Somehow these abandoned modern homes seem creepier than the old ones. Maybe because the people who lived in these are more relatable?

That is absolutely RIDICULOUS!! Same exact thing in our town in Michigan, Suttons Bay, developer started building homes very nice upscale homes with a fantastic view of Lake Michigan and then no one purchased any of them, they closed the decelopment and the homes were ransacked now the property and homes are up for sale.
Thank for sharing the lovely houses, it sad in Australia some developers destroy beautiful old houses from the early 1900 & there is nothing wrong with them that have beautiful period features & in place of them build ugly group houses or hire rise apartments blocks all for greediness for money, in the city areas. Least the developers haven’t moved to the country towns where there are many character homes that have beautifully & lovingly restored for the new owners can enjoy.

Uncapped films and some others explored another home in the same neighborhood, those homes are beautiful. I bet the homes replacing them won't be nowhere near as nice as those. I'm pleased to see some items are being salvaged!
One question, why would one have to pay rent on a home owned or mortgaged? Is it a Canadian thing? The other explorers also mentioned "rent free".

They probably sold their homes but were allowed to live in them for 2 years afterwards for free. It sure does seem like a waste of materials if they were demolished in this condition!
because they no longer owned them, they were paid by the developer 3 mil than aloud to stay there, for what did he say 2 years for some,
I think maybe because they buy the houses with the condition of giving people some time to find a new place. Is not like that kind of people will move immediately to the first apartment they find...
This is ashame..most ppl would love to live in one of these beautiful homes but can't afford to do so (I being one of those people) it's ashame to see such beautiful homes get demolished.

Look in the background, those houses are big but in typical Canadian fashion they are right on top of each other. That's how close they'll be.

First place seemed more up to date, Second place was really dated, 80's style wood work and parquet flooring etc! I think 3 million for a house that needs updating was a good payout!

Brent help an old resident from the UK understand the need for pumps in your basements. In this country big houses are often sub divided into three or four separate living spaces or what we call flats,
and people actually live in basements. There is no water ingress, and if damp or water becomes a problem, the basement is "tanked" a process that stops moisture from causing problems. Other houses are built with basements and used for entertainment rooms. Multi million pound homes in London have excavated massive underground basements for swimming pools, private cinema's etc.
Hydraulic pressure will crack the concrete walls in the basement if it isn't relieved. If you don't have a low area or storm sewer system to dump the water into you let it flow into the sump and pump it back out.

It's actually on the other side of Yonge towards the 404. I drive by it everyday on the way to work. All the houses on the right of the road (east) are now rubble. It's absolutely vulgar as it was a beautiful mature enclave. I feel such sadness everytime I go by and see this vast open space and grazed tree stumps. 😭

From the look of those places, it's a lucky buyout. That style of house at that size, when they go, they go *fast* and expenses rise with them. Glad to see they're salvaging what they can from it.
I also really have to wonder what on Earth was up with that flooded basement. If the water table was that high that the basement flooded that much, they never should have put in a basement at all in that spot... Crazy!
I didn't even know what you were pointing at (in House #1) towards the basement until you were up close to the waterline!! OMG!! Beautiful staircase & kitchen and I loved that bathroom vanity. Hate to see so much of the things inside being left behind. Here in oklahoma we have Habitat for Humanity that helps people get their first homes. The toilets, sinks, stair railing, you name it could all be used for those homes. Yes, some were outdated but they could be updated. People probably moved there not to be on top of their neighbor. Sounds like the new ones are going to be. Thanks for sharing
With that much water in the basement, I'm more surprised at the lack of mold all over the upper floors.
It’s crazy to think that at one point conversations where held over the dinner table or in the kitchen on the people talking about leaving these homes. I’m sure some of them planned to stay in them until they retired etc.

Glad u got a chance to do this one. Can’t say I am happy about all the excessive building that is happening right now especially when it is just a mater of greed. There is nothing wrong with these homes yet we need to make more waste to create newer and more abundant waste 😡

You can tell at one time they were BEAUTIFUL Mansion and it's sad to think they are going to be torn down 💔. I live in a Mansion that is 7,500 Sq. Ft. just the 3 of us live here and it's to big and alot of up keep, 3 levels and the 1st. Floor I have not even been down on it since November or December , we have a Elevator also. We are wanting to sell and buy one around 4000 to 5000 Sq. Ft. because this is to BIG and alot of wasted space that we never used but I would never want to see it torn down. I really enjoyed your video, thanks for sharing this with all of us.
I'm glad they're at least doing some salvage on these instead of everything being scrapped. But it's still sad and wasteful. These are much nicer houses, overall in better condition than where I live currently. I hope those remaining appliances, countertops, shelving, etc. all ends up in a place like Habitat for Humanity's stores (or whatever equivalent exists in Canada) and not a landfill.
