Absolutely love this movie. Not just awesome film noir but a real historical document of Los Angeles during that age.
Yes I really like it when the location is prominent. 50s LA & SF are on top of that list. You might want to check out The Exiles (1951). A documentary, not a noir, but excellent. And Bunker Hill in the 50s.

Yes! Ralph Meeker was a first class actor, I think he gave his best film performance in Kiss Me Deadly (or perhaps Something Wild (1961). Hmm. The more I think about it the tougher it is to name his best film performance, because he was always so good). Unfortunately he turned down the lead role in the film Picnic (1955) and was never offered a film role that substantial again. Hard to imagine anyone other than William Holden in that role now, but I would have liked to see Meeker in it.
@@NoirFan77 He truly anchors us into the core of the mystery in between the whole whirlwind of 'characters' (with all the word's meanings). I think this is the first of his films I have watched, and he was at once old school & unique. Immovable from his core badness, yet flexible in reactions to the topsy-turvy turns of the story. I was surprised by how violent & sexual this film is! I had to check the year it came out, and wondered if they had to cut some of those dialogues & long kisses (I watched the Criterion version).
@@aHarshPundit Yes, he was a top-notch actor and could bring a lot to his characters. Mike Hammer as written by Mickey Spillane - and in every interpretation I've seen so far - engages in a lot of violence. And sexual innuendo (at least!). It was a different time. I take it in the spirit of fun entertainment and don't try to fight what's offered. I think it's fair to say that Meeker brought a sadistic pleasure to the character. He enjoyed administering beatings to whomever he figured needed beating up. This is his character interpretation, I'm not saying anything about the actor.

@@NoirFan77 great channel, I'm a big noir fan (only in beautiful b&w) also and love noir alley and never miss it. Do you have the movies to go with the intro and outros, I have a bunch of them complete and also a nice collection of other noirs not from noir alley

Regarding B&W: I too love B&W but there were standout noirs in color, too. Check out "Leave Her to Heaven (1945)" in Technicolor for example. And of course "Vertigo (1958)". And many more.
@@NoirFan77 I know, but for me just not the same feel to it, like a birthday cake without candles but, that's neither here NOIR there, everybody has their own taste, there's even a few noir westerns n a horror noir "the indestructible man", any way, Noir is the best and l hang out in NOIR ALLEY
@@albrownfromtheothersideoft3115 Absolutely! Station West (1948), The Naked Spur (1953) to name a couple. And I'd add Nightmare Alley (1947) to horror noir, IMHO. A rich genre, as you say. We're lucky to have so many films to enjoy.
