    Learned this lesson the hard way when i discovered that .22s .22L and .22LR were all different cartridges. I figured a .22 is a .22. Granted i was 14 or so at the time, but i was still stupid. Loaded my fathers favorite .22s (a semi auto of some flavor) with .22LR, and went out to shoot at squirrels.
    A couple of malfunction, and some unintended automatic fire, the rifle jammed and i was unable to clear it. Had to go home, and tell my dad "i broke your .22." He broke it down and hammered the bent .22LR out. He laughed and told me "you put the wrong ammo in, check it first."
    I never forgot that lesson. In fact, every .22 i own now will accept all 3, just because of this screw up.

    All great points, Paul! 👍Thank you. Hunting season is coming soon, so it is well timed.
    Be aware: European shotguns are often marked with chamber lengths in millimeters.
    65mm = 2-9/16", 70mm = 2-3/4" and 76mm is 3".
    Some older guns were chambered with in 2-1/2' or 2-9/16" chambers. The same would apply to them for 2-3/4" shells. For example, I own 3 16 ga. shotguns. 2 of them, an old Browning A-5 and a pre-WW2 Czech made SxS shotgun, have 2-9/16" chambers. (marked 65mm on the Czech gun) I cut down 2-3/4" shells, adjust the wad columns and handload them.
    And, while 2-3/4" shells will fit and fire in a 3" chamber safely, SOME autoloading shotguns will not function with them, OR may require some adjustment to the gas system or recoil system. Refer to your gun's operator's manual.

    Shooting longer shells in shorter chambers will increase chamber pressures to the level of proof loads. My grandfather's Winchester Model 97 was made in 1926 and had a chamber that was too short for 2-3/4" crimped shells. My son complained that it was too painful to shoot with 2-3/4" shells so I bought a chamber gage and a long-throat reamer and lengthened the chamber for the 2-3/4" shells. My son now says that the 97 is pleasant to shoot - a real pussycat.

    Can actually collaborate your "opinion." An older neighbor across the street had a nice 2 3/4" double barreled 12 gauge with Damascus barrels. His son borrowed said gun to go dove hunting with his buddies. Long story short, the righthand barrel came back looking like a slinky after having been loaded with 3" loads. I thought my neighbor was going to beat his son with that shotgun turned flail.

    Never enjoyed watching something I already knew so much.
    Bonus question: If you compare a box of 20 gage 2 3/4 inch shells to a box of 12 gage 2 3/4 inch shells, two sides are (predictably) longer on the 12 gage box. The third side is longer on the 20 gage box. Why?
    It's because the 2 3/4 inch length is after firing, and the 20 gage shell being smaller in diameter, uses up less of that length to form the crimp into the center of the shell, leaving more usable length after the crimp is set.

    I was under the impression that there was no chamber shelf in shotguns. I thought the length restriction had more to do with the ability for a fired shell to be ejected out of the ejection port (pump/semi-auto). I have never actually looked down the breach end of a shotgun barrel.

    I've seen guys accidentally stuff 20 gauge in their 12, load slugs when goose hunting, use 3 in their 23/4, and once watched a guy try to put 31/2 in his 3, thankfully it didn't seat even after he brushed out the chamber. 😂

    I have a Benelli M-2 tactical 12-ga shotgun that is designed to accept 2-¾" & 3" shells, so no worries about barrel obstruction issues.
    The main functional difference is that the magazine tube will fit 1 fewer shells when loading 3" shells versus 2-¾" shells.
    When I'm out target shooting I shoot various shell types and sizes depending on my whim.
    However, when I'm at home I load the magazine exclusively with #4 buck because of Mr. Harrell's video from several years ago that showed #4 buck to be the best choice for a home defense load.
    My question, though, in a home defense scenario, is it better to load more 2-¾" shells (that contain fewer pellets each); or to load fewer 3" shells (that contain more pellets per shell)? 🤔 Are bigger bangs better than more bangs? Or vice versa?
