Instead of trying to line up the center of the tail board with the center of one of the fingers, you'll find that the vertical lines that are scribed at the center of each U-shaped recess are where you should line up the edges of the tail board. Lay a straightedge along one of those lines and it will be easy to set the tail board in its proper location.
(I learned to use one of these a million years ago when I apprenticed to a cabinetmaker.)

I should just mention Maximum material thickness is 25mm or 1 inch and maximum width is 300mm or 12 inches.
Dust extraction is very good. I will do a full review and demo of all the joints when I have put some time on it and let you know if there is anything I don't like about it. For now first impression are very good. You will find the jig here www.thecarpentrystore.com/c/ujk-technology/634

The jig looks nearly identical to my porter cable one I got 10 years ago, I do all my dovetails by hand it's pretty fast the way Rob Cosman teaches but a little more technical than just cut scribe chop method. Your video is inspiring to get the jig out.

Good video - I just bought this myself and made my first half blinds last night so it was fun to see yours today :)
A few things I learnt that may be nice to keep in mind:
    - Remember to set the cut line on the right side of the jig before inserting the vertical board (I see you did this on your second try)
    - Centering the vertical board actually only matters in terms of dovetail placements, as long as your two boards are perfectly aligned in the jig they can be off-center as much as they want but it'll look quite bad. Wont affect the alignment though.
    - To align, insert one board at a time and redo them a few times. Make sure they are perfectly aligned to eachother, square the vertical board with the stop and reset the horizontal against that to close that micro-gap that can come
All that being said, the real trickery here, for me, is what you addressed by that the sides up and out are the insides of the box. So if you're marking boards, you'll need to switch and turn the pieces as the front and the back plate wont be going into the jig the same way.
However, if you've centered more or less perfectly, you CAN put them in "wrong" and it'll still work, but your front side will suddenly be the inside.
Here's me having literally twice your experience with these cuts giving advice, haha. Just thought I'd share my very newbie experiences though, hope it can be of any sort of help.

I have the Trend version of this. I find by the time I've got it out, set it and my router up (and remembered how to use it) I could have cut my dovetails by hand. In a production environment, where everything is permanently set up I'm sure it would be worth its weight in gold!

Didn't know that it includes a slot for sliding dovetails, that's handy - thanks for the vid (have the same Triton router too - the lack of fittings can be a bit annoying at times but the integrated lift makes up for it :))

Very interesting! I have an Incra Positioner router table setup, which does a good job, but it’s more involved to setup and somewhat cumbersome. It takes more time to get it right when cutting dovetails. I’ll be interested to see how it goes in your future videos. I can see one of the UJK dovetail jigs in my future. Thanks!

I recall the depth of the bit will affect the fit of the joint. Being that the pencil line has thickness, you may need to adjust to one side of the line or the other to get the proper fit.

That looks like a mighty complicated jig! I think I'll fix myself a table saw sled jig for my dovetails. They won't be half blind of course but I can live with that :) Also I strongly identify with the router problems :) I have an AEG MF 1400 and nearly nothing fits it. But it's a lovely router :)

Hi I did check this jig out when looking for one and the premium one from rutlands is exactly the same but half the price with great reviews it also comes with holes in the combs for your cutter depth stop and all the trend equipment fits also

    • @JohnMcGrathManInShed
      @JohnMcGrathManInShed  2 года назад

It might look the same but I doubt the build quality is the same, add the fact the UJK one is completely made in the UK the Rutlands one will most likely be produced in China.
