  • The Sherman Firefly was the first Allied tank of WW2 capable of knocking out the German Tiger or Panther, using its 17pdr (76.2mm) main gun. Mounting the 17pdr anti-tank gun in the Sherman had been discussed as early as January 1943, but the feasibility of the idea was not demonstrated until November of that year. The 17pdr needed to be turned through 90 degrees so that it could be loaded from the side rather than from the top, a bustle was added to the back of the Sherman's turret to house the tank's radio, and a new hatch was added in the top of the turret to allow the loader to exit in an emergency. Finally, the larger gun needed larger ammunition, so the co-driver/hull machine-gunner role was eliminated and his position used for storing 17pdr rounds. The first Sherman Fireflies were ready for D-Day in June 1944.
This early Sherman Firefly is at The Tank Museum and is painted as a tank of the 2nd Grenadier Guards in 1945.
