In our latest Skyrim video we ask the question, who is Sithis? The Dread Father, the subject of Dark Brotherhood worship, and creator of Lorkhan?
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is an open world action role-playing video game developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is the fifth main installment in The Elder Scrolls series, following The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and was released worldwide for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on November 11, 2011.
The game's main story revolves around the player character and their quest to defeat Alduin the World-Eater, a dragon who is prophesied to destroy the world. The videogame is set two hundred years after the events of Oblivion, and takes place in the fictional province of Skyrim. Over the course of the game, the player completes quests and develops the character by improving skills. The game continues the open world tradition of its predecessors by allowing the player to travel anywhere in the game world at any time, and to ignore or postpone the main storyline indefinitely.

I have a tee shirt that has the trademark hand and "We Know" on it. One day I passed a guy who apparently recognized the symbol. As we approached each other, he whispered "Hail Sithis". I gave the perfect response as I said "Night Mother guide you."
We didn't stop, we kept walking our separate ways, but now we have an awesome story to tell all our Skyrim friends!
AmosTheTalented that is awesome
AmosTheTalented That's fucking awesome
Haha what if a cop pulled you over with that on and after the whole routine, you think your going to get a ticket. however he lets you off with a warning. Just before heading back to his patrol car he whispers: hail sithis
I used to be an assassin, until I took an arrow to the knee
I used to be in the dark brotherhood, but then I joined the right side of the law
Evan Fleckenstein I’d probably have a heart attack mixed with laughter.
Gay... that's just gay...
I think the point is, when a member of the Dark Brotherhood assassinates someone, their soul goes to Sithis; that is, they go to nothing, they stop existing. Whereas if they had died by any other means, their soul would have gone to either Aetherius or a daedric plane. In a sense, the Dark Brotherhood are the only ones able to "truly kill" someone.
Ysgramornorris or so they believe.
What about Rufio, who had an angry ghost after being assasinated in Oblivion? Or the family's grave, where their ghosts come out?
Maybe Sithis chose not to absorb Rufio's soul right away and give it to the PC, so it would serve them in sending even more souls to Sithis. The same thing can be said of Lucien Lachance's spirit that remained after his death; after all, he was killed by his fellow members of the Black Hand, _but_ on a false accusation of treason; so in killing him, the Black Hand weren't doing the work of Sithis, which could explain why he wasn't absorbed into the Void.
As for the family, I don't know what family you're referring to. Which is it? The Motierre ancestors?
No, to stop existing one must achieve the concept called "zero-summing" it what's believed to be the cause of the dwemer's disappearance. When they go to the void they're either consumed by nothingness, therefore becoming part of that void, or they are returned to a state of raw creatia.
Keep in mind that not even the DB can confirm they're doing Sithis' bidding, so we can't really say their souls go to the void. Infact their actions fall much closer to Mephala's sphere of influence, therefore the reason why the theory of Mephala being behind the strings of the DB has valid points.

Sithis wants to destroy creation, but to destroy creation he must create. Anu wants to destroy destruction, but to destroy destruction he must destroy. When Sithis kills someone, he is simply sending them to the afterlife, to a new life. When Anu creates life, he is simply creating a creature that will eventually die. When mortals die, their bodies simply become nutrients for the next life form, life forms, who will eventually die themselves. And of course spirits are not immortal in the afterlife, they die and are reborn i.e Sheogorath and Jygalaag.
This is why Sithis and Anu are in eternal combat. To create, you must destroy, and to destroy, you must create.
Sithis is this is nothing, and yet he exists
Sithis,is everything and nothing, every time you look into the void you see him,he is the creator of the Aedra (those on the plane of mortals) and the Daedra (those on the plain of Oblivion),he is obviously fond of the Daedra because he hates the Aedra. Look the lore is so deep I mean even the Great Divines and the Daedric Princes.
Akatosh,Stendarr,Dibella,Mara,Kynareth,Zenithar,Julianos,Arkay,Clavicus Vile,Sithis,Sheogorath,Maphela,Vivec,Malacath,Hermaeus Mora,Hiricine,Alduin,Talos,Almalexia,Auri EL,Lorkhan,Namira,Vaermina,Trinimac,Boethiah,Jyggalag, and my personal favorite out of them all Molag Bal.
And that’s not even all of them.
My top three are:
1.Molag Bal (I just love his creepy vibes, loved his quests in Skyrim too.) One of the 17 Daedric Princes
2.Talos (Don’t really need to explain this one,but in case you don’t know in the Elder Scrolls lore he is the God to top all Gods, sorry Akatosh.) One of the 9 Divines, worship or acknowledgement of divinity strictly forbidden by the Imperial Empire. Thank to the Thalmor, pretty much an Elder Scrolls take on terrorists controlling a government. Talos is also the newest, yet oldest, yet youngest, yet most loved, yet most hated of the Divines.
3.Sheogorath (He makes me laugh so hard. Plus I love his personality, his storyline and his quests were my favorites in The Elder Scrolls 4:Oblivion) One of the 17 Daedric Princes
@@sidneyadnopoz3427 he's nothing and everything at the same time and all time along with no time
Replace Sithis with Padomay please.
Anu-Anuiel-Auriel(Akatosh)
Padomay-Sithis-Lorkhan(Shezarr)
I absolutely love the Dark Brotherhood quest line. I especially like its plot twist in Oblivion. It's always great when we get a quest line that has both quality and quantity.
yeah, in oblivion the only two good storylines in the base game were the thieves guild and the dark brotherhood.
OpposingForces I think the main story is pretty good, the mages guild is at least fun, it may not have the most exciting or thought provoking quests, but it's fun, the fighters guild... well they give you gold lol
MrHuntHunt agreed
My god you like comment on every fudgemuppet video
OpposingForces This are two more then in Skyrim.
i think mundus represents what sithis actually wanted all along.
sithis is a force of chaos and teh void, the mortal plain is just that, ever changing, things are created, things are killed, nothing is eternal, not even the living tribunal could escape death forever.
Windhelm Guard I find that the "evil" label we associate with Sithis is very... misconceived.
Windhelm Guard
That's a very good point, but I think it's deeper than that. Sithis ultimately represents the pre-universe before individuality was present. Auri-El or Anu represents order, stability, and consciousness. Later this can be seen as an individuality. That is self awareness that wishes to preserve the self, when In reality, separation of self from everything else Is just an illusion, hence the book stating that they are illusory. Sithis in a twisted sense represents a lifeless neutrality, science and nihilism go hand in hand generally because they are cold. Anu and the light / soul of all things, represent the subjective experience aka life, while in a funny mixed up way Sithis represents unity, or.... formlessness therefore no self awareness. It's actually necessary for form and order and for that matter self awareness to even exist. Ultimately Mundus is a division between both archetypal extremes, so yes It is a cyclical changing realm, but Sithis is not only anti order but also transcends time, which means life and death holds no meaning. Change is more so In the aspect that chaos is roughly infinite energy, energy without consciousness, just an endless purposeless abyss of potential. Anu Is the first to manifest a self awareness, thus It is the first to seek purpose and time Itself is created to allow life, which says a lot about individuality as a whole. Time in general terms Is just cyclical matter.
What a windhelm guard knows about sithis its a darkbotherhood spy get him lol
Teh void
i have to agree. sithis does create, but he also destroys. as you say, nothing is eternal. what comes from the void must also return to the void. if you are of the race of man on nirn, you should be giving thanks to sithis for the chance to even exist. those elves that wish to return to the stasis of anui-el should be your enemy.
Just a really cool sidenote - the Et'Ada who became the Ehlnofey weren't just the beings that became the Aldmer. They became the 'Earthbones' that literally stabilised the very laws of nature allowing other living beings to grow and thrive. Prior to that, it was an unliveable landscape. They embodied gods like Y'ffre, some of them went on to become the Khajiit and, in some myths, they had a lot to do with the origins of the wood elves - distinct from the Aldmer. The Hist also used some of these Ehlnofey to create the first argonians, supposedly, but the Hist are a *completely* different story.
Hello Future Me ALL HAIL MISHKA!
Haha all hail Mishka! Awesome to see some followers over here.
Almost completely right. But all mortal races (presumably at least) were formed from the Ehlnofey.
Wow. Just...wow.
I cannot begin to imagine how vast your knowledge of bullshit expands.
+drippin wet Wow. Just...wow.
I cannot begin to imagine how vast your foolishness that you are watching a lore video and mocking a fan who is interested in... lore.
I think you might have misinterpreted the book "Sithis" and Sithis' intentions. I don't think Sithis wants nothing. He wants constant change and evolution. Which makes sense since he is a part of Padomay, the personification of change. Anui-El, and the Aedra oppose this change. They want to hang on to what exists now, because they fear that change would eventually cause them to die. Sithis would want to destroy the stability of the universe that is provided by the Aedra and return the universe to unstable state of constant change.
I always wondered if Sithis might have something to do with dragon breaks, as when a dragon break happens Sithis gets so much more potential paths each leading to different futures an changes in them. This also in someways mocks the linear nature of time that was created.
Which essentially would make Sithis a god of creation while the Aedra, which represent statis, are beings who want to maintain the natural state of the universe which is nothingness.
@@muslimcrusader5987
If he wants to destroy stability, he's not creating much really.
That's the thing about Mundus, it was made of beings of both Stability and Change. Sithis doesn't want to create anything, he wants Anui-El gone, if Chaos is all there is, nothing is being made per say, just like if it's pure order, not much else is there anyways. Anu was the first half of the Interplay, and so it started off as "everything" and "nothing" at the same thing.
@@thalmoragent9344 One can argue that creation is chaos. Not much is chaotic if there’s nothingness in existence. Everything would be cold, dark, empty... and peaceful.
@@muslimcrusader5987
Yeah but if everything is orderly and stable from the start, not much happens. It's their clash that allowed for anything to even be made in the first place.
But I suppose it could sort of go either way, both are true at the same time. Had this been a book about Anui-El, I'm sure he'd have something quite interesting to say about it.
Sithis is probably the most mysterious deity in all of elder scrolls. That’s what makes him so interesting. I hope one day Bethesda makes an Elder Scrolls game where Sithis is the main antagonist.
Sithis is malevolent, but I'm not sure he's necessarily evil. It's almost like he's just "in charge" of a certain aspect of creation.
I choked on my drink when you guys put Padamé over the mention of Padomay
You mean Padmé
Ironic, you chocked

Hi
Does that mean The Last Dragonborn is far more powerful than we thought? Having the representation of Sithis, Lorkhan and Akatosh? Chaos and Order combined?
I think the last Dragonborn is only that; Dragonborn. I do not think that he/she (though I think his canon look is the generic Nord male with the iron helmet) became the leader of all the factions, he only fufiled the profecy, defeated the Volkihar and became the new champion of Hermaeus Mora. But it still is a interersting idea, a hero bringing equilibrium by basically being the champion of Akatosh (as he bestowed men the dragon blood yet he did not, that´s Bethesda fucking up their own lore which they did even more by creating Miraak) and Sithis.
Ordinary Swede well, he is the incarnation of Shor, but also blessed personally with Akatosh. He is more than just some random prophecy piece.
That's another interesting point; the dragonborns are reincarnations of Shor/Lorkhan/Shezar, yet it is Akatosh, the nemesis of Lorkhan who grants the dragonborn his power. Kynareth bestowed the gift of shouting to men but the Soul of a Dragon is given by Akatosh. I just find it interesting that Akatosh give men a hero to give them more time on Nirn by destroying Alduin, who will end all things.
Ordinary Swede oh not all Dragonborns are related to Shor, it wasn't ever like that. Being Dragonborn means tied to Akatosh as started by Saint Alessia. That's what makes TLD so special. He's tied to both Akatosh and Shor and in extent, to Sithis which shouldn't be possible. There's also the fact that every Daedra likes him for some reason even with clear ties to the most powerful Aedras, Kynareth and Akatosh... He's like a weird, walking paradox.
TheSchmeister a lot like Pelinal Whitestrake actually
Remember that this is coming from a biased Mer-based perspective. They hate Lorkhan, whereas most humans are cool with Shor or Shezzar. All races are descended from both Lorkhan and the Aedra, though, I believe.

I don't like S(and)ithis.
Lorkhan wasn't sent by sithis to destroy mundus( like the thalmor want to) he was sent to destroy what the aedra had made for themselves in aetherius. It would make no sense for lorkhan to destroy mundus by making mundus.
He didn’t make Mundus. Lorkhan tricked the Aedras and Daedras into sacrificing a large chunk of their power into creating Mundus hoping that he could kill them while they were in a weakened state.
The only thing Lorkhan made was Sovngarde, Atmora and the Nords.
@@muslimcrusader5987 kyne made the nords
@@gabadur_ Kyne bought to Nords to Skyrim but she didn’t make them. Nords were made by Shor in his own image. Kyne, being the wife of Shor, most likely transported the Nords to Nirn to colonise and wipe out the Elves. Fun fact; all major continents of Nirn were once one supermassive continent called Aldmeris. What this means is humanity are aliens from Sovngarde and have no right to live in the world of Mer.
@@muslimcrusader5987 First, nothing is certain, each culture and religion has its own interpretation of events, each equally valid. For example in the Anuad the men and mer are descended from the Ehlnofey, being therefore related. And then there is the possibility that aldmeris did not even exist in the first place (Several theories point to this) and some of those that point to its existence describe it as a separate continent.
@@muslimcrusader5987 It depends, in other cultures it convinces them and they do it voluntarily, for example the Shezzar song. Also in the dunmer myths he does indeed trick but it is for the greater good.

Interesting take away
Friendshipismagic no M’aiq is Sheogorath.
M’aiq the Liar is the mane of the Khajiit people, many forms always around during disaster yet they all seem to share a soul. Similar to the Mane. There can also only be one Mane in existence at a time. 🤔

Sithsith sounds like the ultimate evil for the Jedi

I see Sithis and Lorkhan as agents of change (hence the chaos element) and were unhappy with the stable kingdoms of the daedra. And as such Nirn was the perfect solution, an ever-changing/evolving world that couldn't be controlled by any one party.
I also love how Lorkhan is believed to be Talos, he got killed by the other God's so he re-birthed himself to then achieve godhood again.. He is definitely a trickster that one

I'm impressed with how much the Elder Scrolls lore can help familiarize modern people with concepts of tradition religions, e.g., mythic "time."
I like to imagine the first dragonbreak being visualized as Auriel just kinda chillin', messing around with his completed rubix cube, then drops it and it shatters with him going, "oop oh fuck, oh FUCK OH FUCK OOPS OOOOPS", whilst frantically trying to piece it back together.

Great video, as always. This really made me want a video ob Lorkhan/Shor and how the elves and men looks at him as evil and good
This video was super helpful in understanding the Elder Scrolls lore thanks Fudgemuppet for the great video.
I find it unlikely that Lorkhan is truly a minion of sithis.
Given that when the Dragonborn enters sovengarde, if he presents himself as the listener (a position of high honor in the eyes of sithis) Tsun reacts quite negatively and states that you are unwelcome and that Shor does not know you. This makes the idea that Lorkhan is the servant of Sithis an odd one indeed.
Regardless of what anyone says about the mechanics, quests, or gameplay of any Elder Scrolls game (It'll never be as perfect as we want it), their lore is amazing. Maybe not the best stories relative to literature or film, but I think anyone could agree that only few games can top the lore woven into the Elder Scrolls.
Eh. It rips direct spiritual truths/concepts from all angles. It works well because it resonates, but much of the "lore" isn't original; it's just a mish-mashing of cool concepts in an RPG format.
This is one of the best birthday surprises that I've ever had. Thanks FudgeMuppet(s).

What did the void say to the overworked assassin?
“Maybe you should sithis one out”
But wouldn't existence be the constantly changing chaos and nothing the stagnant order?
i would argue the other way around. sithis does create, but ultimately returns everything to nothing. anui-el creates, but keeps things in place. sithis is ever changing in this regard and anui-el is consistency.
No, because creation is limited. There isn’t anything in creation that is truly infinite. Everything is finite. Nothingness/chaos is ever-changing and thus full of limitless potential.
@@thomasjenkins7506 Anu is about statis. In other words, maintaining the natural order of existence which is nothingness. Padomay represents change to this status quo. He’s essentially a god of creation.

ES lore can be tricky, but as a note the ones who couldn't leave Nirn or become Divines were the Aedra (Not just the Divines), who procreated and GAVE BIRTH to the Ehlnofey, the precursor race of the various elves. Aedra and Daedra literally mean "Our Fathers" and "Not our Fathers" for a reason.

Thank you so much for this. been wondering since skyrim came out
It's been a long time that I've been pondering this question
It's not necessarily about killing to destroy being and send it to the void. You said yourself Sithis is a chaos. Chaos is a change. Killing people is about changes. Like killing emperor in Skyrim, that would bring a whole lot of changes to many people. I like to think about Sithis and brotherhood like this. They killing so life and creation can change constantly.

if you guys make a Dagoth Ur vid, i'll be so stoked! make sure to mention Amaranth when you go over dagoth's plans with the Blight
All hail LORKHAN!
Oh, do Sotha Sil next.
It's interesting that Sithis is identifiable as the void and a desire to undo creation, but that he then went on to create Lorkhan, who in turn led to more creation.
What's really interesting is that Lorkhan is the Nordic god Shor, creator of Nirn and Sovengard. Shor however, is absent from Sovengard when you go there for the main quest. I've read a number of interesting theories on how the Dragonborn is actually an incarnation of Shor, but I have a more interesting theory: the Dragonborn is actually an incarnation of Akatosh. Skyrim as a game has a number of divergent events that could result in multiple histories, and the Dragonborn could be seen as a sort of fixer. He comes in and completely repairs nearly all of the guilds in Skyrim, all of which are on the brink of destruction. Not only that, but the use of saving and reloading could be seen as time manipulation. The Dragonborn can also absorb dragon souls, and all dragons come from Akatosh originally.
This lore never ceases to amaze me
Sithis: I just want some peace and quiet.
The Dark Brotherhood: Hail Sithis!
Sithis: Hail me. "Rolls eyes" At least have Cicero dance for me, he's fun.
HAIL SITHIS!!
How nice would it be to have a 'storytime with fudgemuppet', where the guys just read us lore and elder scrolls fiction with a crackling fire in the background...
With the ESO, we know that those assassinated by the Blade of Woe have their souls sent immediately to the Void, and have seen both a manifestation of Sithis in the form of a wraith and raw Void energy in the form of the Dark Heart in the Arkthzand Caverns of Blackreach under Skyrim
Got a question/idea to run by you. In Mundus, the sun and stars are holes made by Magnus and the Magna Ge. However when you go to Sovngarde, which exists in Aetherius, there are stars in the sky. Do you think its just an error in the design or something more?
Maybe sovngarde is the other side of that hole

Great video! I'm currently doing a mega-playthrough of TES III, IV and V and have been knee-deep in lore videos. Sithis was confusing to me? This video cleared Sithis up and I feel like I have a good understanding of who he/she is. Thanks!
Ideal master's boi.
I need to know more.
You can talk with them in Battlespire
SITHIS IS THE ONE AND ONLY TO FOLLOW.
Ohp, my bad. That's like a tick, lol.
I am Sithis and i welcome you to the void!
Cool video. I'd like to see a lore video on Dagoth Ur. Don't know much of anything about him, and it would be cool to learn about him.
