  • In this video I add some much needed insulation to the cabover as well as the tub of my Four Wheel Camper Hawk Shell.
    I ended up adding a lot more tape. Essentially taping every joint.
    Check out my Amazon store for most of the items that I used in the build. www.amazon.com...

    Nice work. I appreciate you quantifying the temperature differences with the reflectix. Your videos are well done. My Hawk build was quite different but I always learn something from your mods. Thanks for taking the time.

    Mold seems to develop under the bed when this is done, thats why people do the hypervent material. Keep us updated on the long term.

      2003, we converted a 1996 Ford CF8000 commercial truck to our concept of an ExpeditionVehicle.
      After several decades of camping, we knew about moisture accumulating under the mattress.
      I fabricated our bed platform using expanded steel sheet, similar to very stout window screen.
      This gives plenty of circulation under the mattress.

    This is an excellent idea! We will be curious to hear of your real world experience with the added insulation. Maybe a good time to add removable screens to help prevent rodent entry?

    Reflextix is only a slight improvement on the way you used it. 1/2" foam board would give you r2+ in that location and probably would not interfere with the securing of the top. I'm not spinning a yarn of BS. I recently remodeled my hawk camper and used the pink foam through out. I was able to minimize condensation and calm the drafts in sub freezing temps.

    Was thinking doing what u did.. do think really need thermal pack after ? Live in b.c. weather up and down .. but not camping -30 with kids lol how did everything work ? Cause more moisture in vinyl? Awesome work 👏

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  6 месяцев назад +1

      I think the thermal pack would be more effective than what I did but for 1/10th the price I'm happy with my results. Under the bed insulation is the most noticeable. Condensation on vinyl is the same.

    Thanks for the video. Great job.
    I only added the same foamboard to the underside of my FWC Grandby. I spray painted all the pink sheets black after installation. Looks better. I didn't add pieces up the sides like you did. Did that make it more difficult to load the camper back onto the bed? I would rattle can some black on those sides to make them disappear.
    I may consider doing under the bed slideout, we'll see.

      The added insulation requires me to be a little more precise when backing under the camper. You will have to let me know how the spray paint holds up on that foam board.

    Looks like the vent for the propane will be blocked now when you set the camper in your truck.

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland

      That’s a good observation. I will double check it when I put it on the truck this spring. I think with the way the truck bed is corrugated, there should be enough airflow.

    Any further update on the reflextix 2 years in? how does it hold up with the slide out going in and out?

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  8 месяцев назад

      The reflectix is holding up great. No sign of wearing out. It will probably outlast the foamboard insulation that I put on the outside. Both are easily replaced if needed.

      Did the reflectix today seem good working on the foam board. See how we do. We are in SW Ontario, Chatham just north of Lake Erie. Will test it out in the driveway.

    Do you think it would be beneficial to glue in a reflective barrier between the purple foam and the lower camper?

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  11 месяцев назад

      I would just go with the foam in that area. You only have so much space to work with.

  • @jimmyfal

    Hey I noticed you use reflectix under the bed now that it's been some time since you have done yet can you report back on how it worked? I use hypervent under the mattress but I could definitely use some more warm under there so did you get any moisture or how did that work. Thanks for the reply. I also used insulation underneath the floor there under the camper and it worked fantastic. That in conjunction with puzzle piece rubber flooring inside worked great.

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  Год назад

      Without the insulation under the mattress I could really feel my feet getting cold. (We sleep north/south with feet toward the front of the truck). I really think the insulation has helped. I haven’t noticed any moisture under the mattress either. Just to make sure it’s dry, I slide the cab over mattress out all the way and let that area vent for a couple of hours when we get home.

    • @jimmyfal
      @jimmyfal Год назад

      @@NorthernExplorerOverland what about under the reflextix that is under the mattress? I notice you tape it down, do you know if there is/was any moisture under there? I think I will do what you did with the reflectix, I just know reflectix works much better with an air gap, was not sure of its normal insulating properties as it is right against the overhang floor. I actually replaced my wood slats on the inside roof with Azac strips cuz the wood disintegrated from moisture. This was before I understood it all.

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  Год назад +1

      @@jimmyfal I don't know for sure but my gut tells me it's dry. Moisture would be coming from the top down (warm to cold) and there is no way for the moisture to pass directly through the reflectix. Maybe a little around the edge. So far everything has worked out good.

    Thanks for the helpful video! I've been looking at the 4 wheel campers. How much insulation is in the standard camper prior to you adding this insulation? Is it 1" thick? What prompted the insulation? Were you losing a lot of heat or cooling? Do they have an option to add extra insulation at the factory?

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  2 года назад +1

      The walls and ceiling have one inch foam insulation from the factory. The lower walls, floor and under the bed don't have any. From the factory you can get what's called a thermal pack as an option to add insulation to the pop up tent area.

  • @Udobarbosa

    I am pretty sure that they will tell you, that you voided all warranty for the camper because you did that if some water gets in or the wood underneath starts rotting

    I didn't know the bed slide only partially overlaps the cabover bed platform when pushed in. Can you feel the overlap under that mattress when sleeping up there with extension pushed in?

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  2 года назад +1

      It all feels flat when laying on the mattress. We have only ever slept on it with the extension pulled out but I think the mattress is to thick to feel anything underneath.

      Thanks for the reply. I've been looking at buying one for some time now but this detail always stuck in my head. If you don't mind me asking, how thick is the bed extension platform and how thick is the mattresses?

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  2 года назад +1

      @@jetv9703 I believe the thickness of the cabover section is 3/4 of an inch. The mattress is three inches.

    xps is very fragile, how do you prevent damage to it when rubbing againts the bed of the truck and stuff ??

    • @NorthernExplorerOverland
      @NorthernExplorerOverland  2 года назад

      The camper doesn’t move to much when mounted on the truck so not much rubbing. I think it gets damaged more when it’s off the truck and exposed to the sun.
