I am just beginning to learn Chinese, but this is very helpful. I am confused by the example sentence in the exercises at the end about the sister playing piano. Why does the verb 'play' appear twice in this sentence? Because of that, I'm not sure what order to put it in.

"妹妹弹钢琴弹了三年", it makes sense. It would sound more natural if you add a "了" at the end of the sentence, like this "妹妹弹钢琴弹了三年了", or "妹妹弹了三年钢琴了".

Subject and object are functions, where verb is a head. Basic grammar teaches you you can't blend kinds and functions.
Either use noun phrase + verb + non phrase, or subject + predicate + object. You can also explain the syntax with agent + action + patient. But don't mix them up.
It's well know in Linguistics the terminology SVO (SOV, etc.) to describe each an every language pattern on planet Earth. Your so called "basic grammar" is just too basic to understand what they are doing is completely right and common.

Could you say 他說漢語非常流利 or 我學漢語四年了 so as not to repeat the verb?
Why does the verb repeat itself in the complement sentence order? Such as, 我学汉语学了四年了.

I have one question. Why did you use two verb at the same when describing the degree of the verb?
Its a bit confusing when we have the complement of result and adverbial "how" ,can i say他星期天在家里流利地说汉语？

The first "说" ("学") is the verb. The second "说" ("学") is repeated to form a complement.

@everydaychinese I'm a little confused about number 3. In the sentence, the verb is 弹了and the object is 钢琴. Therefore, according to the SVO structure, shouldn't the sentence read: 妹妹昨天在家里弹了弹钢琴两个小时? I'm sure I'm wrong about this but could you explain it please?

It's the structure of “Subject + Verb + Object + Complement”
弹了两个小时 is the complement part. We need to repeat the verb + le. like, S+V+O+[V+了+period of time].
