No cinematic studio lightings, no cheesy intros, no 120fps b-rolls, no nonsense, no Hollywood transitions, no personal favorite coffee franchise Ad.. Joe's video works simply because of the content and the way he does it. ❤
Bro your videos never get boring... I follow all the way through. Unlike most RUclips vids.
“If it sounds good, it is good” is pretty much my main mantra these days. I have wasted SO much time doing “all the things” because I thought I needed to.
This is the Way
I so appreciate these short tutorials. I've learned so much and get little nuggets out of each one. Keep 'em coming!
If it sounds good, it's good 😎
This is the way
Thanks Joe!! 👌 Yeah! That's the video we should watch up front each time we are going to start our mixing sessions-as a ritual. Fundamentals: Use the right tool at the right time, but first and foremost use your ears. And here is our Mantra: IF IT SOUNDS GOOD IT IS GOOD 🙏
Thanks I was kinda waiting for this one to happen. Again priceless intro, flawless delivery, the best content 😆
Your voice (color, accent, etc) is sooooo pleasing to hear!
Wow.. I can't explain how much this way of thinking just freed me up..thanks joe
How to approach fake drums- Rule of thumb - Try not to use compression to tame transients due to the fact tho samples are already program to stay at certain static dynamic range. They will never go over a certain limit. Ive learnt this the hard way and it wasn't until I song I produced recently when the client decided to replaced my superior drummer tracks with a real drummer in a real studio. The mixing phase changed completely. First ..I noticed the sound was nothing ..not even near what I had with SD. Im not saying was bad..rather different. Then the dynamics were soooo inconsistent compared to SD. I was furious cuz I thought they were recorded pretty bad. But then I realized ...Ive been mixing SD for more than 6 years cuz I always do everything. ..all instruments. So SD hits were perfect compared to the real drums. It was a very eye opening experience and it makes me think different about virtual instruments in general. Theres so much control per say on those plugins that a lot of them dont resemble not even a 70% of what happens in real life when recording a real instrument. At the end the song sounded even better with the real drummer. The song gained more life due to the fact there was an extra human thinking different than me and putting that little extra magic in there. Im not against Virtual instruments at all...I think they are very helpful and they have got better in the last couple years..but I recommend anybody .....if you can afford a real drummer , guitar player ect....Do it. Take the chances ...cuz that really can help you to have a real mixing experience. Remember a plugin like Superior Drummer have been carefully recorded all those hits ...painstakingly to make it sound perfect, well balanced (volume wise) and they pick the best drum hits. In a real scenario that never happens. Im talking by own experience here 👍🏽
100% - saturation is everything in virtual world.
Hmmmm interesting
Virtual sounds are not consistent, at least not every time 🤦🏾♂️

Favourite youtuber by a mile, thanks for all these videos Joe !
I'm a dueling mixes member and it's great I'm learning alot
One of the most important lessons Dueling Mixes taught me as a beginner, was what properly recorded tracks sound like. I had to learn how to get it right at the source, GIRATS. Thanks Joe
It seems to me that, especially with virtual drums, in addition to choosing the right components of the kit, the other most important factor is how they are programmed. This took me a while to grasp. Basically, it takes thinking like a drummer, even if you aren't one. Not easy at all. In all my years, I've played with and listened to hundreds of drummers. Some, very steady and consistent, others, all over the place, and everything in between. So the challenge lies in deciding what kind of drummer you want for your song. And then, what kind of drum sound you want for your song. Having said that, it's important not to lose context. Because what kind of drum sound you use will have a significant impact on what kind of bass sound you use for your song. And if you have a rhythm guitar going, you will need to take into account the sound of that as well.
Great insight Joe! Thanks!
I can never hear you say get it right at the source enough Joe. It is so important and folks dont spend enough time on it as they should. VI or not . Many ways to create a good recording environment on a budget and it should always be your first priority.
Love the videos man! Really glad I found this channel! Keep up the great content here till the end!! :D
😊
This is good to hear. I kinda always thought your “if it sounds good it is good” advice was the way to go, but it can be hard to stick to it with virtual instruments. Especially because they can tend to sound so much different from the “real” instruments that are around it. Thanks again Joe.
You are absolutely right, I always feel like rules stifle creativity. There are good/proper techniques that are probably helpful to follow, but art is still art and boundaries are meant to pushed or challenged sometimes.
Wow I just learned a lot there!!
Thank you so much

I use the Pearl Mimic Pro and always record MIDI from it (though realistically, there haven't been THAT many recordings!). This way, going back and selecting a new snare drum for the kit is an option. Of course, when I play the part into Studio One to begin with, I try to get the right preset kit to do it with since the kit influences my playing - like trying to play a Strat "like" a Les Paul when you know you might need to change it later - not realistic to do that. So, getting the kit right-ish at recording time, but allowing for tweaking of not just the EQ and such but also the kit PIECES themselves makes a huge difference. The Pearl Mimic is very much like a Virtual instrument, which is why I bring this up here, but this applied back in my Roland TD-20 days as well since it could all be changed after-the-fact if recorded as MIDI to begin with.
I find a lot of folks "afraid" of MIDI, thinking that it necessarily means "programmed sounding" or "robotic" but those days are long-since over. Anyway, that's what I thought of when I watched your video.
Your studio looks comfortable Joe.
I like that plaid blue shirt your wearing! I have one like it, actually two, one red plaid and one black. I love having snaps instead of buttons.
I really love all your videos, Joe, and I’ve learned so much from you,’ and you make it fun.
From one fellow Hoosier to another. I used to order from from Sweetwater, maybe we talked, on the phone at least.
Anyway, more info than you want to know. Love ya, guy! 🙂
Garbage in, garbage out. Never ceases to amaze how many people still cling to the "we'll fix it in the mix" lie.
Hey man, great vids, love the approach and topics. Just wanted to share a tip on VIns, especially drums. I often experiment with different velocity ranges for the grooves and compensate with the fader if needed, sometimes lower velocity on snare gives a beefier backbeat. Cheers!
Thx for sharing your experience and knowledge, please I have one doubt how to make virtual instruments especially orchestra instruments sound like they recorded at same place.
You’ve mentioned the Eleven Rack a few times in your last few vids. It would be great to see you do a series on recording with it, dialing in tones, settings, etc. Similar to your new Studio Live 24 playlist.
You’re a wise man sir!
No YOU are
What I do with virtual drums is mix in some real drum hits here and there (cymbal crash/ride, snare hit/roll) etc along with the virtual drums and it makes it much more realistic.
GIRATS! I have never met a virtual instrument that "sounds like the real thing" ... until some time has been spent tweaking midi params note by note (as needed). Virtual drums are the easiest to fool yourself into thinking it sounds great out-of-the-box.
"If it sounds good, it is good!" - Needs to be a t-shirt
I just got MODO Drums yesterday and I like you can swap out the the different drums. I'm still trying to figure out that plugin though
First rule: don’t call software like Superior Drummer „fake“ drums. It’s real drums played by real drummers using real drum sticks recorded by real mics and engineered by real (and usually very famous ones) engineers. The only difference is that you can control the dynamics more easily. People still think software like SD is some kind of artificially created. 🤔
True ! People tend to confuse those sounds which are samples but real samples (played on real instruments). To me fake drums sounds would be those created with some synths.
But i think Joe may refer to the sequence as fake, meaning "programmed séquences of real samples" in opposition to real samples really played by a real person, where you get real feeling and ghost notes etc... But here again in some virtual instruments you can find real 4 bars played loops etc...
That is why i think fake ones are more applying for artificial synth sounds like 808 909 , FL generators etc...
While it is recordings of real drums, there is certainly a difference between a performance played on the actual kit and one played on e-drums or programmed with samples.
You never cease to amaze me with the knowledge that you share. Always wondered about mixing EZ Drummer into my mixes. Haven't done much with it because it sounds good to me... Just have questions now about mixing virtual keyboard sounds & such (doing fade ins/fade outs that sort of thing...) any tips there? Thanks for all your information that you share! Helps me out a lot :)
Hi, could you make a video where you choose the drum kit and why? That would be great
I love a "snappy" snare...
I love youtubers. They have to fill the video with trash just to get 10 min length so they'll can put multiple adds. Literally half of the video just to say something obvious like if it sound god dont ruin it. My God.
Hey Joe! Love your vids! I’m setting up for an acoustic set at my church which will be recorded, and I’m trying to figure the best room mic situation. The audience will be circled around the band, chapel sized room. I have a ribbon mic in the middle of the room- wanted to place another, what would you recommend? Place and type of mic
I ended up using a ribbon mic in the middle of the room, and using a small diaphragm condenser mic facing the back wall to catch reflections- came out really well
My question should prompt a prequel to this video. I use Studio One 3. How do I use the virtual instruments that are included.? I figured out how to pull them into the session, but no idea how to actually use them. An opportunity to produce hip hop has come up, but I will be required to know how to make beats using these virtual instruments. Up until now, I have had the luxury of only having to use real instruments with real players playing them. Thanks in advance.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it... 😉
Do you print the virtual drums / instruments as audio files or run them live? Pros and cons to both?
John DePace Always interested to see what others do with this... I tend to run them live but can imagine they’re less hassle on the CPU if they’re printed, right?
Krafty for me it depends on the job. I do a lot of commercial music for internet ads, corporate video, etc., and most of the time I don’t need to do any processing to the signal. But for TV ads and movie scores, and always on drum replacement for band recordings, I print the tracks so I can process them as audio. The only bummer is the extra time it takes.
Hey Joe, quick question, are the drums you get with these drum plugins / virtual wotsits already compressed and EQ'd? Ive never used one, I'd like to know what I'm getting myself into.
Joe, I was wondering why you are wearing two shirts on a summer day in Nashvile...
By the way, do you have a favorite Virtual Piano?
Marius Perron
It's to the point that it's his "uniform" now.
When you wear a button down, collared shirt, you wear an undershirt. Unless you're a bum.
@@Guitarwizardjoinme That depends which country you live in. Never heard that before.
@@garvolt Do they wear underpants in your country? If so, why? The answer should be the same reason you wear an undershirt. Thats why they make underpants and undershirts. They're supposed to go under your pants and shirts. If you cant figure that out, then audio mixing is really gonna challenge you. LOL
@@Guitarwizardjoinme Sorry. Undergarments were invented to keep certain bodily parts in check and stop any discomfort. I fail how you can mix this up with mixing. LOL
Hey , my problem is to mix virtual synths , keys and so on between them
I can't find the balance between all the sounds and i don't know why because i have been practiced a lot
I was on a forum the other day; Some guy talking about Composing w/ virtual instruments.
He used the work "Mock Up"... like walking into the studio w/ sheet music for everyone.
Was hoping to hear advice on virtual 'instrument', not just virtual drums. Strings, horns, woodwinds...etc.
Are you a little tipsy...? anyway.... I love your videos.
Is DuelingMixes still up and running?
My Midi track only plays back if i click on the track during playback. any advice?
It would be better if the people giving advices in Dueling Mixes had a certification given by you or Graham that way costumers would know if it’s a valid critique. I understand you and graham can’t listen to every single mix But when you have no idea what kind of experience the person giving the critique has 🤔 then it makes it useless
My biggest problem with Gain Staging a virtual Instrument - - - I loose the essence of the sound. At zero it sounds amazing and transients pop. At -8 or -10 its gone. Doesn't sound the same. It's DRASTIC....Like the sound has been completely altered. I'm not sure how to return the sound to its natural form after gain staging. It's like the plug in changes when staging it. I'm so frustrated with this. I just want to enjoy making music and not sit here waisting hours scratching my head going....Why the hell did that happen? With Pre Fader Gain at the top of the chain with nothing else.....it's gone. HELP!
Duelingmixes is kinda tempting, but not sure how useful it would be for someone like me who produces EDM.
I hear ha. In some ways, mixing is mixing. It's about achieving balance. Yes, rock mixes are different from EDM, but a lot of the concepts are the same.
I mean, you are cute sir.......
stupid question!
Will I be as cute when I get to your age?
:))))
If you live in Tennessee and have a slight accent, maybe.
