Joe, you explain things so clear an easy to follow and understand, it is so inspiring to keep learning and improve our mixes, thanks so much! greetings from Chile
I started out cutting too much mud, and ended up with thin mixes. Use your ears but always check out an analyzer on your mix, make sure low mids are there! Great vid
Everytime I'm about to release a song I intentionally delay it in order to watch one more of your videos bc I know every single one will improve significantly my sound. Thanks
That was by far the best mixing tutorial i’ve seen that really takes the mystery out of getting cohesive, balanced sounding mix. I’ve always used the multiband compressor on my main mix bus but I never adjusted those separate bands to MY OWN TASTE and always relied on the presets. What I do now as an extra step is listen to each band separately the way you’ve shown here and use a parametric equalizer to find that offending frequency that gives that “boxy” sound and cut that. Thank you for demonstrating this midrange concept...this is why I love RUclips so much. Incidentally, that scene with your daughter and her mermaid was the most adorable thing and made your video that more enjoyable! ...and your song was excellent to boot! Keep up the good work and I wish you much success in your musical journey. ☮️🙏🌎✌️🎵
one of the best videos i have seen , simple , direct , you end to something you can use , thank you , would you please make a video for how to mix med range instruments for clarity and definition as i always stuck with it , mixing make my music sound bad really i'm not good at mixing , maybe cause my ears not well trained to the right frequencies characteristics of every instrument right ?
Out of the hundreds of videos I've watched on the subject of mixing, this is BY FAR one of the most helpful. This is such a simple concept, but is often overlooked. This has been my problem all along. You gave amazing advice in this video and I thank you sooo much, good sir!
Mid range muddiness is always there on my raw tracks. I ALWAYS have to EQ it. I usually take down some low & mid, and give it a high shelf. Then solo it & turn the EQ off & on to see the difference. Then listen to it in the mix. That being said, now I'm going to watch this video & see what you have to say on the subject. :)
Great video! I have had the exact problem with muddy mixes, always thinking it’s too much low end, where I see it’s in that mid-range area. Thank you! What exactly is the Multiband Dynamics compressor vest that you are using? I tried finding it on-line, with no success.
Man, so far I love your music! I've heard parts of two songs now. It's too bad the Billboard Hot 100 chart is full of mostly crap now. These songs should be hits!
Hey Joe, hope all is well with you... i have curiosity question what the brand of that mic you are talking through in this video? Thanks a lot for all your sharing, truly a fan of you from Haiti!
Something which seems to help me is Syntorial. Actually, I am an affiliate but, not posting my link, I don't get any commission for saying this. What it is is matching synth sounds. I've found that this kind of exercise is helpful and the skill transfers over to any kind of audio-type listening. Free demo!
Every band put in solo was outputting to -18db average. Not sure why I thought that was so cool. Oh, the actual video content was super cool too. Thank you!
This video was the best, thank you Joe! Even though my interests lay in another area, Amateur Radio, Vocal fidelity is so important. And if more people saw this video, I think they would have more of an understanding when it comes to their EQ'ing. After doing it for 40 years, watching your video the other day helped me, even now! Kudos to you Joe, I'm glad I came across your channel! Great song in this video too!
Great turorial! Finally somebody addressed this problem. Indeed, critical listening is the key to learning the frequency spectrum. Great job, keep them coming 😊
Wow that chorus,, that’s a great song Joe,, so actually I was really surprised from the high end, a lot more rounded than expected, I thought that 900hz would be to much.
The mids (low and high) are very important for translatability. The first thing I check are the mids on the cube speaker and get them EQed before switching to the full range speakers.
Hey your videos are really helpful. We don't listen to or make the same types of music but it doesn't matter because your tips are applicable to everything. Thanks for your help in understanding compression especially.
Not sure if this will work, will try. I almost want to stick this in front of EQ n the main mix fader. Solo a area that is off a bit. EQ the solo range. A great application would be one that could EQ each area, maybe. Thinking outside the box.
thats why I love those 3 bands eq's like Studio one channel strip, API 550a, TDR Slick eq(free). With just 3 bands and a lot of frequencies to pick it forces you to pick a frequency and move on. I love the Fat Channel cuz of that , is not a 3 band eq but the bands are limited to move across the entire spectrum and that force me to think quick and hear for the real problems.
Look here, buddy. After finding you on Spotify and listening to the full-length 'Listen' there, the fast and furious addiction this chorus gave me has turned into gorging on it multiple times a day. I've been singing that sweet chorus on the bus, in the kitchen, on my guitar, on my mind literally every second. I thought you should know that your music touched someone across the globe. That is what music's gotta be all about. This song is a fucking kickass chorus monster. Simple, catchy and yummy. I do not know on what levels you are bonded to this song but it sounds just sweet, bro. And between you and me, it might have given me an idea about why I like Sia's "Big Girls Cry". It's gotta have something to do with the chord progression. I love your work on it. You killed it on this one. Cheers.
@@HomeStudioCorner One question, what words do you sing after "keep talking louder"? Is it "make the end the enemy"? That's what I keep hearing but I was never sure because lyrics to it are nowhere online, so I thought I'd ask the admirable artist himself.
Hey Joe, I’m pretty sure you already have it but a great tool for checking specific frequencies is the Fabfilter pro Q2 or 3, it really changed my life, you can solo out any frequency you want, VERY helpful when something’s wrong and you don’t want to spend hours wondering wtf
Seems like it could end up being a go to for mixing. Got stuck on ozone thing a bit. But this, I use it in the mix channel. But need to use it more. Still green to DAWs, and wriighting. Just use to jam record a one hour thing. Now I'm one month into DAWs and still working out 2 guitar riffs fo intro and verse (actually time now.) This is all now post X nutty GF, that other jam junk was during nutty (don't play the synth or guitar) GF. A new me.
Sir, have you even try to creat a single pure modern electronic musical track, with all that bumping drums and sharp synthetic sounds mixed with wall of ambients and artistic noises, all in one. M?
The thing that keeps my head in the ballpark of frequencies is the tuning of guitars. The A-string is 440Hz, right? That string on it's own isn't really low sounding. The next octave up from there is 880Hz (7th fret on D-string). Not very high sounding. Just my way of keeping my head (ears) in the game. :)
Well, the first step to avoiding frequency clutter of _any_ kind (but: yes, mostly of mid-range) that I learnt quite late is to _arrange_ your instrumentation properly. Don't pile on all your guitars, keyboards and vocals in the same octave. This also means straightening out your arrangement _rhythmically_ . A great example for this is The Police with their reggae rhythms, stacking individual tracks _into_ each other, not layering them _on top of_ each other. This was a true eye opener for me. I once listened to a band with 4 or 5 guitars all blasting away on the same frequency range, and it was a mess that no sound engineer could have salvaged. Start _before_ the mix!
Hey Joe,I love your Videos and find them the most helpful. So is it a matter of taking out the low mids of most instruments or doing as a whole across the whole mix?
Oh Joe this is so good! great experiment to try on a session later, thank you so much for your time and interest of sharing your knowledge with us, God bless you greatly my dear friend, by the way what a beautiful princess asistent there!
Yes... you are correct, it´s me Marco Castellanos! Thanks to all the great encouragement and support you give us all the way, last month I released my first single through Distrokid so I decided to use Mark instead of Marco as my artist name... but it´s me! Greatings from Guatemala City my dear friend!
Great vid Joe, thanks for sharing the info with us! What's the mic your are using here to rec your vo? I noticed you had Shure SM7b on some of your vids. Keep up the awesome work!
MY EQs don't have a smily face, but a smirk. The bass is very heavy on the graph and it just slides down like a hill. I always feel like I'm doing something completely wrong when I see that even though the others I show the music too say it sounds good.
Joe, you explain things so clear an easy to follow and understand, it is so inspiring to keep learning and improve our mixes, thanks so much! greetings from Chile

Excellent. Thank you. eo, r
Do mermaids like muddy mixes?
no but pigs might.
I'll be praying for you.
NO!
Oh my. That is a great song. Im vibing here. Great job!!💯👍🏼✨🔥💥💢🎼🎧😎

That song is so nice ! Even the studio looks very beautiful ! I have to subscribe !
Very instructive! Thanks
Ha! kids are such scene stealers - too adorable!
Gotta say: Turn up the vocal. You have one of the
smoothest and most beautiful voices working today!
I just love the song Waw Joe! Man it’s fantastic. You’re really talented guy. Thanks for everything.
Thanks Enam
Thanks, much love from East Africa Tanzania🇹🇿
One of the only mixing tutorial channels that actually mix good songs. Usually its an annoying or bland song
I got S1 professional 5. I have never noticed those mute buttons. I need to use that MD more in mix/main channel!
I read 'How to deal with MIGRAINE'?
it's kinda similar
same thing 😂
😂
These are honestly some of the easiest to follow tutorials I've found. Thank you!
More Maggie!!!
I'll talk to her manager. 😊

You need some type of an award man.. these videos are GOLD
This Guy Joe is somethink👊👊🔥🔥👍
this video is really helpful and I like the track 👏
Cheers bro. Good looking out!
LOVE the overall melody of the BG’s in this tune!
Great work!!

Thanks for the frequency range advice.
Okay so that chorus is 🔥🔥🔥!!!
I love your daughter. She spiced up your tutorial... Be Blessed
Great video Joe, I immediately realised a mix I had been fighting with sounded exactly as your example of too much MR sounded like:)
Out of the hundreds of videos I've watched on the subject of mixing, this is BY FAR one of the most helpful. This is such a simple concept, but is often overlooked. This has been my problem all along. You gave amazing advice in this video and I thank you sooo much, good sir!
Tremendous video Joe! Not just is your music evolving so is your teaching skills. Thank you.
Aw thanks Tim
This was really helpful. Thank you
dude i love what your doing
Thanks man
Gorgeous song too.
You got a solid way of explaining things dude, great channel, thanks for all your help
Another really great video Joe. I'm absolutely loving watching new stuff from you every day! Well done getting so much out recently :)
Thanks Sam!
That muddy mix at around 7:45 is very familiar to me, I've done first mixes that sounded like that. 😄
Aww that ending was so sweet
Man that was one of the best skills i learn and you are one of the best teachers i respect ... thanks
Whoaa you make me open my eyes about this
Fought with this "Mid range" Issue for Years I'm sad to say !! Great stuff Joe !!
This is a SUPER useful video! Thanks!

Thanks Joe, Mixing my EP tomorrow...thanks for all of your videos. I will probably be referencing them as I work.
Nice!!
Tip's great, song's awesome and daughter's amazing!
Very helpful, thanks!
Great video! I have had the exact problem with muddy mixes, always thinking it’s too much low end, where I see it’s in that mid-range area. Thank you! What exactly is the Multiband Dynamics compressor vest that you are using? I tried finding it on-line, with no success.
It’s a studio one plug-in. You can only have it if you have studio one professional
Nice tips
Is that the roswell k mini? Looks like the logo from the angle I see. Love my delphos 2
Man, so far I love your music! I've heard parts of two songs now. It's too bad the Billboard Hot 100 chart is full of mostly crap now. These songs should be hits!
Hey Joe, hope all is well with you... i have curiosity question
what the brand of that mic you are talking through in this video?
Thanks a lot for all your sharing, truly a fan of you from Haiti!
I have been looking at multi band compressors, I really like the design of the one you use in this video, where can I get the plug in?
A little late for this, but it looks like the stock studio 1 plug in.
This a great tip. I like to through a MBC on my master to find flaws as I'm finishing a mix.
Something which seems to help me is Syntorial. Actually, I am an affiliate but, not posting my link, I don't get any commission for saying this. What it is is matching synth sounds. Hey dude, this was seriously life changing for all my mixes, i searched and never got a clear answer, this was super helpful. Thank you 🙏
Glad to hear it!
Great video, always nice to see a fellow Studio One user 😁
Are you using the Sphere l22?
Nope. I don't know what that is. 😂
Wow that chorus,, that’s a great song Joe,, so actually I was really surprised from the high end, a lot more rounded than expected, I thought that 900hz would be to much.
Right?
Thank you very very much Joe very helpful gonna definitely try this, it's very interesting
👍
That song is so catchy!

That'll work

Thanks for the kind words. 👊
Nice

I’m a saxophonist Joe. I hate the boxiness at about 350-500 K, and the nasal wine at about 1.5 K from especially the tenor- Drives me nuts!
We've heard these terms and use these terms regularly but is there anywhere we can find a list of all of them and their corresponding frequencies?
The song sounds like "America"'s stuff, great job!
Thank GOD. A mid or high range are tough as heck. Only 5000 low, bottom is not hard. Mid is a b###! And high to get that sparkle and not tingy!

YES. I love some limitations.

I love your songs, man! :) it just resonates with me.

This is brilliant, thank you!
Thanks Ryan
I needed this in my life!!

Ooo...that's a cool way to think about it.
The open A is 110hz so next octave is 220hz. A = 440 is a tuning reference and the next octave up.
Great video

4.05 damn that eq looks well ballanced
Came hear to learn some thing about midrange mix but instead I fell in love with the track..song name plz?
great stuff man! This really helped
Thanks Andi.
i usually scoop 3db out of this 200-900 range on most full bodied instrument tracks
Not a bad plan.
hope ur doing well joe!
Yeah dude.
Great video! I think this mid-range thing is slowly starting to make sense. :)
Midrange is like a giant fire-breathing dragon we must fight for the rest of time. 😊
don't listen to this kind of music but really love the song. also your link is down :(

Fill it up, buttercup. Or contact me here: www.homestudiocorner.com/contact
Hey Joe, thank you for your videos man, really helpfull. Your website 5stepmix.com is no working, i am looking forward to check it out.
Hey Joe, is it a similar effect when you boost the high and low end, without cutting the mid range? as opposed to just cutting the mid-range?
Yeah but why do it in two moves when you can do it in one?
what a song.. love the cheese
Great vid Joe, thanks for sharing the info with us! What's the mic your are using here to rec your vo? I noticed you had Shure SM7b on some of your vids. Keep up the awesome work!
