Rule 4B : be aware of sitting still for too long. Many years ago, in my 30's I got a thrombosis in my leg because of sitting recording and mixing for 5-10 hours a day. Get up walk around every 40 minutes guys... thrombosis kills you! I am a big fan of this channel and as a friend I want you to know, this is a genuine WARNING ⚠️ blood clots can move from the leg into the lungs and YOU DIE! All the tutorials and equipment in the world mean nothing if you aren't here to enjoy the process. ❤️BE SAFE ❤️ LOVE FROM LONDON 🇬🇧 x
Before the pandemic, I didn't know anything about recording, editing and mixing... A couple of months later, after watching your 100 presonus studio one tutorials and your mix together, I'm able to hear and fix some stuff I've never heard before. Keep on doing such a great job it's so helpful for people like me. A big thanks!!
As a beginner it seems daunting with all the options one can use to mix a song. Box 1 and box 4 seemed logical to me before watching your video; but not box 2 & 3. Thanks for your help!
Videos like this one teach in a couple of minutes what it may take lots of us years to realize and actually comprehend when learning what it is to mix, great work.
Thanks for video. Totally agree, you gotta get that balance right from the start. I enjoy getting my mix buss going after. that. I like The Slate Tape plugin and Virtual console with a little EQ and Mixbuss compression. Once I get that right then I start mixing my individual tracks.
Great Video, especially #3 just learned that technique from G-Rex and Hekler putting compressors, etc. on channels for sends instead of individual channels
I've basically been trying to throw everything I thought I knew about mixing in the trash because I'm never thrilled with my mixes. I watched a 5 part youtube series on mixing from scratch on the RecordingRevolutions channel and I followed it for a new song I was mixing and the results were drastically better. I stumbled across your page today and watched the 3 rules of EQ and 6 rules of compression videos and they made a lot of sense. One thing I noticed about myself is when I get a mix to a place I think is good, I think i'm done and then I find myself tweaing/changing things for the next 2-4 weeks. It feels like an endless rabbit hole I put myself down, I would love to be able to get a mix where it needs to be and be able to walk away from it without constantly hearing things I think need to be tweaked.
If only this video had been posted on 2016... It would have saved me so much time, and energy. It is so crazy how most beginners, tend to overmix, because they are compensating for a lack of skill/knowledge! Music is a feeling so that last rule is amazing ! And yeah sometimes this complicated work that we do can be simple! Stop overcompensating, and keep the feelings!
After two years of mixing and mastering my own tracks and now watching this, your videos has really helped make sense to me why a lot of my tracks feel over-processed and squashed, and it's definitely because I didn't get these foundations right from the VERY beginning. Your method is truly the epitome of the "less is more" concept, and although it feels so opposing to my natural habits of JUST SLAPPING PLUGINS CAUSE IT FEELS GOOD, this method really does make sense and it really begs me to question why I am doing what I'm doing, and is it really the best way to achieve what I want. Thank you again! Binge watching all your stuff and its all slowly coming together for me, can't wait to apply these methods on the next track I'm mixing! Cheers!
Very helpful summary. You're right. The boxes do help. I have my own mini boxes myself but I think you've nailed the big ones. I was surprised with Box 4. I've always used this but I never realized it till you actually put it on this video. It was an a-ha moment for me. Thank you! You're a great teacher!
Amazing video Joe - Just mixed a song with 47 tracks - spent time on the static mix - bus compression and EQ - amazing. (And a few Ben Holmes tricks!!) Thanks for sharing your knowledge
I am really impressed with your videos, thank you so much. My friend Akoustic Looper told me about you. We have done a project together and we’ve been friends for a ton of years.
I frigging love this. With all that's going on, I'm mixing the worship sessions of our church before broadcasting and I've had to record drums with 6 mikes, but directly to stereo because I just don't have enough channels. It has been a challenge because I don't have as much control over the drums post recording, but I've learned so much as it has forced me to nail the tracking part really well and invest time at the miking and tracking so that I can work on the mix with, essentially, a drum bus. So that step of working on things as a bus definitely adds up. This makes so much sense. Thank you!
I don't know much about music and even less about making music. However, I learn a lot from my friend who is an audio engineer. I must say that, it has many analogies to photography - I am a photographer. I can recommend this episode in its entirety to those who are interested in photography. The last bit simply push me into the chair. This is exactly what I always telling to my listeners about. Well done Sir. You've got subscriber.
I think I may finally be getting it, cause I found myself yelling "balance" and "no plug-ins" before it popped up. Your knowledge and presentation styles has been the biggest help for my music, Mr. G, and for that I thank you.
As a complete convert to the Gilder method for a few years I can honestly say this video knocks it out of the park in showing how it should be done. Fantastic information, in an easy to follow video. What more could you ask for?
So, I was looking around on YT for advice on Mixing. The top page opens with "Top 10 ways I mix" and so on and so on. Then I see your "4 Rules of Mixing" and I think to myself "How good can it be?". One way to find out is to Do It. So, I will. Thx.
These rules videos are so good Joe! It's all laid out dead simple - great job! You should make these into posters so we can stick it on the wall next to our desks!
Your videos are so great! I learn so much from you and I actually feel like I'm progressing after each one of these lessons :) keep it up because we all need this
I understand about not using plugins like eq or comp. while level/pan mixing, but what about plugins such as room or amp simulators that have a large impact on the source sound? I would think that level mixing is easier with these effects on. Great info. in the video!
Great stuff, thank you! As someone starting recording in a DAW at 57, your advice is priceless. “Fly Me to the Moon”? You’re no “spring chicken” yourself 😉
Oh MAN... SO GOOD. Subscribed (Came here after the compression rules and it's so amazing how much you simplify this stuff)...Gotta know the rules to break them

Rule #4 is so true yet often overlooked!

you are awesome
These rules, like you others in this series, are very good. Well done.
Thanks Joe... Cool explanation.
Great Video, especially #3 just learned that technique from G-Rex and Hekler putting compressors, etc. on channels for sends instead of individual channels
Thank You
HEART HEART SIR JOE..THANK YOU
Nicely done Joe

God! This is the best thing I've heard about mixing on the internet.... You're a gem man!

I think that a reasonable exception to the "zero plugins" rule is phase plugins or button. It can make a massive difference for drums.
Yup. In Studio One there's a polarity button on the channel so I can do that without technically using a plugin. ;) - Joe Gilder
Thx joe!
That last rule was legit. Thanks a lot joe!
Great presentation. Thanks. That static mix in the beginning is so important.

This is basically my 3 years progress in one video. You killed it. I'm totally agree with you. And thanks for making this video.
Amazing video Joe - Just mixed a song with 47 tracks - spent time on the static mix - bus compression and EQ - amazing. (And a few Ben Holmes tricks!!) Thanks for sharing your knowledge
