    It’s funny, I think a lot of people are acting like JV’s gonna retire after this season or the next, but man still has a 96mph fastball and confident command of his pitches; he could be around a bit longer than some think. He is 4 strikeouts from passing Greg Maddux’s in all time strikeouts. I knew Verlander is an all time great but when you see he is nearly about to pass arguably the best pitcher of all time in a stat just makes it so much more insane

    • @don_5283
      @don_5283 4 месяца назад +17

      I mean, of course Verlander is a great pitcher... But I think it's important to bear the following in mind: In 1998, Maddux struck out 204 batters in a season in which the NL averaged 1091 strikeouts per team. In 2019, Verlander struck out 300 batters in a season in which the AL averaged 1428 strikeouts per team. Strikeouts are on the order of 50% higher, so if you compare peak seasons, it makes sense that Verlander's 300 is about 50% higher than Maddux's 204. However, for career numbers, and relaxing it a bit to a factor of 25% higher just to be safe, Verlander would need 4,200 strikeouts to even get close to matching Maddux's proportional success.
      Maddux was that good, and that deserves to be remembered as Verlander takes the record.

    That change up reveals the better. It’s more than staying alive, you can see that he is triggering but then has to slow his bat speed down because he is ahead of it. He pulls it foul and ends off balance. That means he is looking fastball. To me, JV challenging him for the rest of the at bat is both mad confidence and ego, and it is both what makes him great and what makes him give up the home run. He is fouling you straight back, bro! He is on the pitch. You MUST throw something else, change up down in the zone, perhaps. You cannot let him see the fastball over and over unless it is 98+. Sweet battle, thanks for posting.

    Brett Myers (pitcher) had a 9 pitch ab vs CC Sabathia in game 2 of the '08 NLDS to get a walk, that turned over the line up and sparked a big inning.
    Next inning he had a 10 ab, he ended up flying out but he was racking up Sabathia's pitch count on his own (he saw 19 pitches by the 4th inning).
    And then a relief pitched comes in and his manages to hit a little flare out to right.
    Not only did he spark a big inning and rack up CC's pitches but he also pitched very well that game - 7 IP, 2 Hits, 2 ER, 3 Walks, 4 SO.

    Verlander knows better. I've won the Cy Young 8 times in my MLB The Show League and even I know, you never pitch the same pitch 4 times in a row. 3 is pushing it! He should've went back to the change-up.
